I want to encrypt my SD card but when I tell it to apply encryption and encrypt the card it unmounts the card and I get the error "Error encrypting SD card. Unable to mount SD card" then my device will not recognize the SD card until I go back through SD card encryption and tell it to disable encryption. Thoughts?
Hello, I'm new here.
I'm using Moto X Style Indian version with Android Marshmallow from last 5 months. I'm using "SANDISK ULTRA microSD UHS-I CARD" with format as internal storage without any problem, but now suddenly a notification show up that "Insert your SD card", I even didn't remove my card since I put it once. I tried to insert my SD card to HTC phone, saying "Damaged SD card" with only option for format it. (I'm not able to take screenshots or click any pic)(SD card is still in my moto x style but in setting it shows "Not Inserted".)

Welcome to the world of adopted storage...
Try to power off the device, remove the card and reinsert it, then power back up. If that fails, either the card has failed or the encryption key has gotten corrupted or "lost". There isn't a lot you can do to save or resurrect it if your device doesn't see the card and unencrypt the data.
When a card is adopted as internal storage, it is encrypted and uses the ext4 filesystem, it will only work in the same device with the same key and cannot be read in any other device without formatting it back to FAT32 and wiping out all the data. There is some information here about reading the data with a Linux computer, if you have the appropriate card reader and can access the encryption key on the device.
Thanks for your reply @acejavelin,
I tried everything turn my phone off, eject card then reinsert it, still same error. Now what to do? Will I format my card with FAT32 by attach my card with PC? I know my data will not save... but I have no option.

Yes... Reformat it in a PC or in another device. Personally, I would not reuse the card, especially as adopted storage, since it can no longer be trusted.

Ok, I will also not use this card again with adopted storage. Thanks for your suggestion @acejavelin .
Seems my problem will be solved , but all my data will loss :crying:
Sounds like the problem is with your phone's SD card reader, not with the card itself. Other computers / phones will tell you the SD card is damaged/corrupted because they cannot read it (the card is encrypted), but that doesn't mean the card is actually damaged or corrupted.
You won't be able to extract your data from it unless you can get it to read the card again. I would try popping out the sim /sd card tray and shoving it back in many times, to see if eventually it will read (mine takes 2-3 tries before it will read)
If you can't get it to work you may need to contact Moto support to get a replacement under warranty (assuming you haven't unlocked the bootloader / voided the warranty)
Definitely try another card though if you have access to one, just to check and see if it will read a different card.
Hi there,
I have installed SD Card in Nokia 5 and selected as "internal storage" and moved as many apps as possible in SD card. But when I tried to access SD Card through builtin file explorer "Files" and self installed "ASUS File Manager", the card is not visible. I have connected phone with laptop, it also do not show the card. It only show 16 GB of mobile storage. I am unable to copy any data in the card. Not even all the apps can be moved to card as well.
Is there any way, I can access SD Card for normal data storage and movement while SD Card is selected as Internal Storage. Any expertise please?
Hi bro,
Same thing for me, and I have made a Software Reset, so I lost the decryption key for SD, so my 16GB SanDisk SD card can't be shown on any devices or PC (Running Windows or Linux). My advice, is to format the SD as media device and move what you want.
Nokia definitely has a problem with this feature, I, tried to format my 32GB Transcend 300X card as internal and it stucked and rebooted itself, leaving me with an unusable card. I bought a new one and set it as a portable. Nokia recommends card with read speed above 80mb/s, so I got one with 95mb/s but you can still feel the lag sometimes...

Hi, My SD card on Nokia 5 suddenly stooped being recognized one day and all my apps and data was lost. I switched off the phone and reinserted the card, but no use. Then I took the card for recovery with a data recovery company. They called and told me that all they can see on my SD card is garbage and it could be encrypted or its logical drive could have completely been wiped. I had encrypted my phone but I haven't encrypted my card. Any pointers on what should I do next? The data is very precious to me and I need to recover it.

Same situation same SD Card here.
After throwing away the unusable card I am using a Trancsend 64GiB card as internal. The phone takes a whole lot of time to properly boot the SD Card after rebooting. Also sometimes the phone says SD Card as corrupted then everyone will choose to reboot but after rebooting the phone temporarily dies. No command, no charging animation (temporarily brick), I faced this twice. After an hour I plugged it to charger again then it showed up that it's still alive...

Use Mix File Explorer
My phone's screen is dying and I cannot view anything from the display.
I want to transfer everything in my SD card to my new phone but unfortunately the SD card has been decrypted.
Is there any solution to decrypt my SD card without the phone screen?
I think you can't.
Have multiple Moto E4s XT1767PP unlocked Verizon phones. Needed to replace one so I moved the SIM card and the 128GB SD card formatted as Internal Storage and containing many pictures and other data to the new phone.
Phone booted and recognized T-Mobile SIM card but displayed a message that the Samsung SD card was not recognized.. Contacts seemed to be there and the new phone made and received phone calls.
Went into Settings/Storage and was asked to format the SD card. Did NOT FORMAT the SD card as I did not want to destroy all the data recorded on it.
Shut down the phone, removed battery and SD card and inserted another SD card. Replaced battery and rebooted the phone. After it came on went to Settings/Storage and formatted the new blank SD card as Internal Storage,
How can I get the original SD card and its data to be recognized by the new XT1767PP phone?
If not possible how can I get the data backed to my Google.com account to be transferred to the new phone?

The only device that will recognize and read and decrypt that SD card is your old phone.
