I am an old time rooter. G1, Vibrant, G2 (what a pain in the ass that was), Nexus 4, OnePlus One. I have rooted them all. My most recent phone the LG G4 I never bothered rooting, I grew tired of fighting with HBO Now, Android pay compatibility.
At this point, I just want battery life and stability in my phone, but I have read here and there that the stock ROM is not all that stable... and LeEco is not on top of the OTA system server so even updating to the "current" version might not happen.
Anyway, I an using my Nexus 4 while I wait for delivery and tried out LinageOS. To my shock it supports Android pay, So I am more inclined to consider flashing ROM's again.
Again Stability and battery-life are my concern. What are people's thoughts on this?
So since I have had about 48 hours with this phone. I think I can safely say stock is fine. Zero crashes, zero lag, great battery life.
I will be just staying with stock for now, but it is nice to know we have an active XDA community I can fall back on if the stock OS pisses me off.
I had stock over 5 months, there are no random crashes.
I'd recommend a modified stock like Turbo's. Removes alot bloat and battery life is great. I'm running his 23mini rom. It's been fantastic.
What is your current version? I was 18s, then manually updates=d to 19s. now trying to get to 20, 21...
I am not getting the auto updates because the ota servers are dead
Using Lineage 14.1 then switch back to stock. Stock has best battery life imo

I do however, have some gripes with stock android. One of the biggest is the lack of permissions controls in apps.
Today, I read that cyanogen is implementing permissions blocking at the app level on the nightly builds. I am VERY intrigued and want to give this a go.

I love it right now.. before it was bloated and totally incomplete and now they got it working pretty darn good you asked at a good time! but for some users.. still causing issues. For some like myself it is perfect right now absolutely no problems I took a while to stick with GB because of all the problems with CM7 I had an htc magic which was pretty similar to the dream and I understand most the problems you probably faced. I've tried a bajillion cooked rooms myself and ever since I moved to the nexus one I just stick with a few (I tried so many on the magic it was my first android and wasted so much time -_-) I would suggest you give this one a try it still has extra features but most of which I find useful
It makes it noticeably snappier and battery life is better. 99% win (wireless LAN reception is a bit worse). I went from stock 2.3.4 to CM7 and am kicking myself for not doing it 16 months ago lol. Maybe there were issues with cooked Roms earlier but the n1 is a mature platform and I haven't noticed any major issues with cyanogen 7.03, of course YMMV

I have been running the nightlies for weeks and they have been very stable for me. I have not had any significant problems and really like using them. #85 put the permissions blocking in yesterday and I tried it with a few apps. Seems to work fine. I liked stock rom, but personally could not do without trackball wake and lots of other wonderful features in cm.
Once you go custom you wont ever go back to stock.
Make sure you understand how to flash a custom recovery and how to get to it first.

i think it is currently very stable and good apart from the wonk issue.

I have been running CM7 since shortly after the official Froyo was released from Google. I had to send my phone back for the powerbutton and so I rooted it right before and tried out one of the CM6 nightlies. It was amazing. The features in every subsequent version have only built on the quality of CyanogenMod. I have been a nightly user ever since (although I only flash nightlies every week or so).
It has been extremely stable for me and I have converted a few friends (most recently a friend with the Desire HD) and they don't know how they dealt with the stock crap for so long.
So in short, give it a shot. Do a nandroid beforehand if you are worried, as then you can go right back if you don't like it.
You can only control the permissions on cm7 nightlies. That feature isn't available in the stable release I believe.

cyanogen 7 starting at nightly #74 has introduced some new bug fixes which greatly improve standby battery life, so that now idle current with screen off is 3-4mA. its so good now, that you can leave your phone unplugged over night for 8 hours and only lose like 3% battery. and this is WITH wifi and email accounts turned on and syncing.
this makes the nexus one like a brand new phone and turned it into a proper normal device in the sense that you can now rely on superb battery life. you know that when you arent using it and the screen is off, when you come back to it you will have the same battery percentage as when you left it.
its a no brainer to use the nightly just because of this alone.
Ever since the 2.3.4, I've been happy with the battery life and fixes with the GPS. Currently my uptime is 190+ hours without the usual sluggish response that requires a restart.
Running CM7 I found more random issues from the call quality being distorted and random reboots, to other random bugs that I need something stable.

i often go 550 hours between reboots on cyanogen.
I have had my Verizon G2 for about a year and I have just been using the Verizon updates since then and no huge issues that made life miserable. But I just got the OTA update to 5.0.2 and my battery life is awful. I have done a factory reset to it, and it is still bad.
So I have decided that I'm just going to root and get a custom rom (I have done this with Bugless Beast the Motorola Droid in 2010 or so, so I am not totally unfamiliar with the process, just out of the loop).
My big this is battery life and stability. I would like to have some of the cool cutting edge features, so totally vanilla may not be the thing for me. I had rather the rom be based of of Lollipop, but if there is a much better one based off of KitKat, especially with battery life and stability, then that is more than ok with me.
So if anyone could recommend me a rom (or a few) that I could look into to get an idea of where I would want to go, that would be great! I just don't quite know where to start at the moment.

I'm asking this question because I want input from users who did upgrade and I'm not sure if I need the upgrade or not.
I'm currently going by the logic: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." I'm quite happy with how Android L with the stock Kernel works on my device and after looking at the features that Google advertises for M I discovered that I can live without most of them.
I'm mostly interested in the new battery management system, app permissions, overall performance improvements in apps and general usage and some misc things like the new copy/paste thingy.
So let's say that of all the above, I'm mostly interested in the new battery management system. How well does it in you experience work? How much more usage do you get out of your phone? Do the new Doze and App Standby features really work as well as Google advertises them?
Also how stable is Android M on the Nexus 4? This is the main thing that is keeping me from upgrading. I would rather stay on stock then get a few new features that may or may not work well or even worse, get a phone that crashes every 5 minutes.
I'm currently looking to use the Pure Nexus Project ROM (because I want the pure Google experience) and the TAURUS Kernel (heard a lot of good things about this Kernel and it works well with the ROM I've chosen by the reports of some users).
So what do think? Is it worth it to upgrade to M or should I wait for the next major Android version?

I have been using One Of A Kind ROM (OCT 31, Build) and it has been rock solid for me. My phone's battery definitely lasts longer than stock Lollipop ROM. We are talking a couple of hours extra. The Doze feature works well, there is very little battery drain on standby. You will see that from battery stats. You will be waiting for a while until next iteration of Android. As you know Google has stopped supporting Nexus 4, it will be at least few weeks to a month before we get anything going for our beloved Nexus 4. Even then, the stability won't be guaranteed.
I think there are a few stable ROMs out there. Back up everything and give it a try. Worst case scenario, you go back to what you had.
I tried M, and I am not going back to Lollipop.
Yes, you should. Doze makes a difference for me, and the permission stuff is always useful to have. If you find yourself confortable with stock L, then you should flash "stock M", which is, in my opinion: Fake Nexus ROM.
I had same doubts one month ago, and I tried with a few ROMs out here, searching for stability, battery life, without compromising performance. I stopped on the ROM I linked you, try it!

I have decided to not upgrade for the time being.
It does have noticeable improvements, the system is smoother, battery life is longer (you should probably install Grennify to further improve the new Doze mode and App Standby functionalities),
and it comes with app permission control.
With regard to stablization, I have been using the PureNexusProject rom and the TAURUS kernel for nearly a month, no reboot no crash, no bizarre behaviors, everything seems fine and I really enjoy it.
I personally recommand you to try it, anyway it's the new Android!
I'm loving android M, Doze is really working to me!
So I think you should give it a try.

For a number or reasons. It's mostly that I'm happy how things are working right now and I don't have time to upgrade. Also, I don't have enough space to fully backup my apps.
My current phone, HTC M8 has almost died on me. The speakers are shot and to be honest the battery is getting worse, it really isn't worth fixing considering it's beaten up condition.
For now I need speakers, so I'm thinking of digging out my mint condition Nexus 4. It is unlocked etc so it is ready for flashing away. The last rom on it was the fantastic Mahdi rom, but of course that was Kitkat.
I hate asking the best rom question, it's done to death and annoys people. So I'll ask a different way!!!
Would I be correct to assume Lollipop roms are likely the most stable, battery efficient roms or is the consensus that Kitkat was better? I won't mention Marshmallow as it's not "official". Oh wait, I just did!

It will be like stepping back time firing up the old Nexus. Still a fantastic piece of hardware, quite ahead of it's time back then I think.
I would also recommend Chroma, Marshmallow works really well on the Nexus 4 even if it is not officially released for that device. I wouldn't go back to a previous version.
About Pure Nexus, personally I've had some issues with it. If I remember well it was Bluetooth audio playback stutettering and/or frequent WiFi disconnections. It was an older version however. Maybe it is fixed now.
Unfortunately, the developer is only going to be releasing one more update to Chroma for the Nexus 4 and that is it, so it doesn't make sense to install it . I am currently on Chroma and love it, so that is a shame. I think I am going to go with CM13 next.
After enjoying a 64gb storage phone, I just realised my old N4 was only an 8gb. That said, I don't recall ever running out of space. I don't do music, install many apps or store much junk such as pics so I might get away with it. I simply need a working phone for talk, text, mobile web etc.
Dirty Unicorns is a solid ROM..
For marshmallow I recommend Pure Nexus. The best I've used performance, stability and battery life wise, was Purity kitkat.
I would recmend Sailfish OS + sfdroid. You can run android apps and have the best multitasking out there. Sailfish OS is almost pure linux on your phone. It's faster then android and without sfdroid and google apps does not drain battery. You will have amazing battery life with just sailfish os on your nexus 4. Trust me i have nexus 4 with Sailfish OS only. It does 4 hour SOT at least with full day battery life.
Thanks for all the advice. The old N4 is now up and running, with the latest Pure Nexus. All is well, although it will take some getting used to not having bass speakers from the htc!
Good to have a working phone again. Hope it lasts a while until I can afford another phone or get my htc repaired. Might have a play around with different roms.

Chroma, installed it in both my mom and brother nexus, no problem whatsoever.
The ROM isn't the only thing you can do to make the N4 up to "modern standards".
My advice is to find a ROM you like. I use DirtyUnicorns since it stills get updated regularly (but it sucks because they recommend you clean flash each time).
Next, flash the HellSpawn kernel (and control it with the Kernel Aduitor app, from the play store).
Then go find the latest Viper4Android app and flash that. This will boost your sound performance immensely (seriously, it's like a different phone) - note, if you get audio bugs then just increase performance in the kernel.
Finally, get some nice icon themes or layers so you can make it as you want it.
(for more advanced stuff, you can flash xposed as well and add some nice modules to improve the look and usage of the phone).

I got the base rom to run pretty good once I turned off all notifications and animations, and set the max number of background processes to 4
I like los14.1... but I've barebones the build by deleting everything I don't want and then I added some tweaks to make it feel real good.
All the custom roms are more or less the same (except for stock based like stock+ rom) because they are all made from Steel01's sources baked with custom rom specific files. So pick the one you find the prettiest or the most useful...

It depends what you're going for on your tablet. If you're aiming to keep all the Nvidia specific features I would recommend the 5.4.1 stock+ rom. If you don't care about any of that I believe that lineage is the way to go. Between the two, performance is the same for the most part, lineage is based on 7.1.2 though instead of 7.0, so you get a few newer features. If I have time later to come back to this I'll link them.

I've been trying the 5.4.1+ rom. For some reason it crashes and boot loops after installing Swift Keyboard Damn, I really like that keyboard. Then I updated Magisk on it, to get a message saying the new Magisk app isn't supported. So I uninstalled it to download the previous version and that caused a bootloop now too
Just flashed it again, hopefully it works better this time.

Secondly I did update the stock rom to 5.4 but the battery drain was horrendous. No gaming, just surfing facebook or the internet was a draining the battery in a few hours. Even in standby on my nightstand, battery was almost dead the next morning. Then after some research many people said to downgrade to 5.2 which I did and it pretty much fixed the battery drain issue.
Then I found out about LineageOS and decided to install 15.1, performance is good, but does still experience some battery drain issues, but not as bad as 5.4.
I also know that earlier this year LineageOS has returned support for the Nividia Shield K1 tablet, but is that for OS 17 and how long do I have to wait for that version?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

On 5.4 to get regular battery usage you have to enable custom cpu profiles, the default profile doesn't idle properly and the cpu's stay in a higher frequency state. You can then have all 4 cores enabled and it will idle properly (well it does for me), and you have nvidia driver support for the original wifi game controller which i have.
Otherwise, if you use a LineageOS 14 build, you can have full hardware video acceleration, on 15 builds you won't have hardware video acceleration.
So what your saying is I can go back to 5.4 and just play with the settings? Any special apps to do this, or just all within the android settings that need changing in order to have the performance and stop the battery drain problem?
If it's just the android settings, what are the settings I need to change? Tutorial?

honestly, i think we are all screwed
my tablet wont charge at all now. it shows the icon on the screen saying it is charging but it doesnt charge at all. sometimes i can get about 10% on it.
the computer no longer recognises the device and i have only ever used official ota firmwares for it
spoke to Nvidia and all i got was the out of warrenty response.
they no longer care in anyway about shield tablet users and as it is discontinued its not like you can even buy a replacement. you cant buy secondhand either because theyll all just have the same bollocks battery issues we have on ours now.
I'll contribute a data point for anyone reading in late-2019 going into 2020:
I'm on Stock+ 5.4.1 on my K1 and it has been great for me so far in the last few weeks since I flashed it. I had been on the stock Marshmallow firmware for the past three years and was having the typical lag issues on wake. It was so severe that the tablet was completely unusable coming out of a deep sleep. It was also a chore to reboot it because even the lag on holding down the power button was agonizing and unpredictable. It was worse than booting Windows with an old hard drive.
I've had no lag-on-wake issues with Stock+ 5.4.1 so far. It's like coming back to remember why I liked this tablet in the first place after hating it for the past couple of years. I hadn't used it for anything other than daily alarms over the past year and change, but lately, I've been using it for bedside reading again instead of my phones.
To address a few of the issues that have been brought up in this thread:
I haven't had any battery drain issues with Stock+ 5.4.1. It seems to do about the same on my K1 as Marshmallow did, which was 100% to 15% on idle except for daily alarms (and snoozes) from Sunday through Saturday.
I ordered a new 6000 mAh replacement battery from AliExpress and will be installing it when needed. My current battery life isn't great, but it's not horrible either. I think it still manages to have about 80% of its original capacity.
After installing Stock+ 5.4.1, I flashed the latest Magisk 20.1 zip (Stock+ 5.4.1 came with Magisk 16.0) from within TWRP at a later date with no issues. Magisk 18+ is not compatible with Magisk Manager versions older than 7.0.0, but the old versions of Magisk Manager were bad in that they would always ask you to update to the latest version regardless of what version of Magisk you had installed. Basically, Magisk Manager was asking you for permission to nuke itself.
I have never used the official Facebook or Messenger apps, but virtually every comment I've ever read about them say that they're battery killers. Use a third-party app that combines both and has a smaller memory footprint.
I used to be an avid user of SwiftKey, but I've since soured on it. I haven't installed it on my K1 since the firmware upgrade and I don't know if I will going forward. The biggest benefit of SwiftKey used to be the dedicated number row, but its predictive swiping was the worst I had ever used. I'm on Gboard now and it seems to be working well. The only feature I miss from SwiftKey is the arrow keys to move the text cursor.
I am also wondering what is the best ROM. I got a K1 used as well not too long ago, and I mostly want to use it as a study tool for some CompTIA certifications in 2020, so viewing PDF's/word docs, exam simulations, and tutorial videos will be it's primary function. I do like comics so I would like it to perform snappy.
I really have no interest in gaming or social media.

I went with a stock-based ROM because I still wanted all of the tablet's functionality to work as designed, even though I've never played games on my K1 using a controller or created an Nvidia account. However, as long as retaining those features won't cause the device to run poorly and there isn't anything inherently poor about the stock experience, I don't mind. Stock-based ROMs are usually easier to set up and install. Nvidia stock firmware isn't known for being particularly bloated or heavy like that of some phone manufacturers, but of course LineageOS is still going to be faster at the cost of some device-specific features.
Given your intended use, as long as you use something newer than the stock Marshmallow firmware and its wake lag issues, you probably don't need to worry about much else.
I decided to dig my K1 out of the closet and have a play with over the holidays. I just flashed the stock recovery 5.20 but for some reason I cannot update or download any apps from the Google Play Store. I keep getting error 963. I searched how to fix this but nothing has worked.
Anyone else been able to fix this?
