unlocked SM-G900V on Tmobile - Software Update Question (not root/custom firmware) - Verizon Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

(did a search as well as checked the recommended threads before posting)
As the title states, I have just picked up a Verizon Galaxy S5 that was unlocked and have my son's tmobile sim in and working currently, and with the proper APN info also)
It is currently on Android 4.4.4 and I would like to update it to the most recent available software. My questions are:
-What carrier's software do i install? VZW? When i hooked it up to the pc i let it install the proper USB drivers, and it has said there was software available(it was unable to connect doing it OTA)
-Is the software it found Marshmallow 6?
-Will updating through the VZW app on my pc erase any of the settings that are already there? The unlock, APN, Apps, etc?
I bought this for my son who has killed 3 Iphones in that many years and his main concern is that he has Snapchat
I was able to find an older version that works on this phone as the most recent says it will not and he can't get it from Google Play, I dl'ed an old apk from somewhere online and got that up and running.
Any advice or pointing me in the proper direction would be greatly appreciated. I'm just coming back here after years away since i don't deal with HTC or Windows phones any more
Thanks Again!!

Xperia Play question here and I am in need of a few answers

Hi there so I am not new to rooting and flashing roms but not an expert either. I have a Xperia play I got from Verizon(yes horrid verizon) few problems as I can see I cant unlock bootloader, I assume this because in configurations settings there is no root option or even a bootloader unlock yes or no so from what iveread im screwed in that area.
My other problem is and htis is now on 3 phones of xperia play verizon has sent me they all have version of android 2.3.2 and when i try to do the manual update I get this mssg and I have bene trying this on all the ones they sent me and even contacted them with sony on the line and they cant understand why(morons). only solution is to send to them but perhaps someone here can help me. Here is the mssg. it tells me there was an error downloading hte software and it please try again later it has said this for weeks since ive had it everytime i try even after doing a hardreset and this is on all 3 xperia plays they have sent me so it must be something they have done.
Can I still manual update it at least to 2.3.4 using the method from sony and discussed on here using a flashtool x10 but im not sur what version of flash to use since they show like 3 main ones for different types and if so if im using windows what version of flashtool for my xperia play from verizon would i get for my xperia play r800x?
Any ideas and help would be great thanks agian.
You can use the latest one.
Hi talrune,
I'll try to answer some of the questions you posted, but I may be wrong on some things. (If anyone can see anything wrong please feel free to correct me) As far as rooting the device it can be done. It has been awhile since I rooted mine and I cannot remember how I did it. I'm sure a quick google search will pull it up. As far as the bootloader, you can unlock it but you have to pay to have it unlocked. Alejandrissimo was offering this service a while back and I assume he still is. If you would like to get your bootloader unlocked you will have to get in touch with him.
I do not know why you would be having trouble with upgrading to 2.3.4 from Verizon OTA. I am pretty sure however that you cannot use flashtool to install the update without having an unlocked bootloader. Also, the directions from sony are no good. Unless they have changed things they want you to use PC companion or something to download and install the update. This works fine, however, when they ask you to connect the phone they require they phone be connected in MTP mode (I believe) and there is no way to put the R800x into this mode. I called sony and they asked me to go into the system menu and go to the Sony Erriccson tab, but this tab does not exist on the verizon phones (dang verizon!!!)
If you have the money I would strongly suggest getting the bootloader unlocked. It is extremely helpful when Verizon fails in epic fashion. Plus its fun to play around with different roms and kernels. Goodluck
with a locked-bootloader flashtool should work, but fastboot should not.
there a firmware stickied in the Development forum for the VZW R800x

[Q] Help regarding SM-G900P

Hey everyone, I been looking around the forums here and other sites and have learned a lot of info in pieces but I really need help with a particular issue. A friend of mine gave me a Sprint Galaxy SM-G900P (Galaxy S5) which is (of course) CDMA with GSM compatibility. Im unsure at the moment what service he was wanting to use but I know it is a GSM carrier (US) because he has a SIM he wanted to use. I owe him a favor so I told him I would try. Besides going the route of purchasing a unlock box and unlocking the phone with that, I discovered the SSU apk which SIM-Unlocks the phone. I downgraded the phone from Lollipop 5.0 stock to Android 4.4.2 KitKat (G900PVPU1ANE5) with ODIN. (FYI, i was stuck in download mode with no recovery mode for a week before finally getting one to work, and so happen to be that version that went through)..... I downloaded SSU and it unlocked the phone and I switched mobile network mode from CDMA to GSM Units. (NOTE: it says 4.4.2 and up will not work with USA carrier SIM cards without downgrading the Modem but I have not tried just yet) Im about to Root the phone but here is where my question comes in. I have read of people flashing roms to get their phones to work with certain carriers and other functions. Will rooting help me out at all? I guess IM asking if there is a ROM that I can flash onto the phone to enable the use of whatever carrier he is wanting to use with it. I know thats most likely useful in the situation, but Im awaiting that answer as we type. ANY help would be greatly appreciated ))) Thank you all.
Anyone? :/

How to upgrade rooted Note 3 from 4.4.2 to current (Newbie here)

TL;DR Help a newbie with upgrading my rooted Note 3 from 4.4.2 to a more current version please. I'm old and dumb and really tried to find an answer before embarrassing myself on a forum of experts. Knowing me, the answer is probably right under my nose. Go easy on me <3
Hey guys,
I used the search function on this site and on google but was unable to find what I'm looking for.
I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 with T-Mobile. I have Android aversion 4.4.2 and my model number is SM-N900T.
I rooted my phone using a guide I found on youtube to get superuser for the purpose of being able to play emulators on my phone, such as Snes9x EX+, Nostalgia.NES Lite, ePSXe, etc. They all work great. I am not using a custom ROM.
The problem I'm facing is that I don't understand if I need to unroot (correct term?) my phone and just get the auto updates, or to download and install them manually, but I'm unable to receive auto updates over the air as I'm sure you guys would know since this is your hobby and are versed in this sort of thing. I don't even know how to do either really properly but am not afraid to try.
The reason I'm wanting to upgrade now (which might be completely unrelated) is that I haven't been receiving text messages from either my sister or my roommate, whom both of their last messages were received by me on Aug. 5th. I tried contacting my carrier and they said they didn't detect a problem. Both of their carriers said the same thing (one being T-Mobile as well). I guess this is just another step in troubleshooting but I would like to believe this is a network issue.
Any advice would help and would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

Updating Galaxy S4 from 4.4.2 to 4.4.4+

I'm contemplating purchasing a new phone. I found a refurbished S4 for $75 and want to buy it, but I need at least 4.4.4 so I can play Pokemon GO. Does anyone know if it can get to 4.4.4 or higher? Also, if so, does it require rooting?
I also read that it's up to the cell phone carriers to allow a higher firmware, so if it's a case of the carrier, does Net10 allow you to get to 4.4.4 or higher?
Which variant of the S4 is it? if it's the international, samsung has 5.1.1 released so you won't have to root it.
you can always root it if the carrier hasn't updated it. which I doubt
Sent from my GT-I9505
It's not your carrier that matters, it's the carrier which the phone was purchased from that matters.
I actually purchased the S5, T-Mobile is the original carrier, and they have Marshmallow available, however, for whatever reason, I can't get it downloaded. I'm using Net10 as the wireless provider, but when I search for updates via wifi or 4G, it says there are none available (I'm currently on 4.4.2). Any clue what to do? On the phone with T-Mobile now but god knows if they're competent enough to help me.

These are the S4 forums, mate.
You started the thread mentioning something about an S4, which now turned into an S5 somehow.
And you can always download the firmware and flash it manually. Or update with Kies.

Enter download mode and read off the model number of the S5. If it says anything other than SM-G900T, then that is why you are having issues with the download. Keep in mind that there are Straight Talk and Net10 versions of the S5 available. Both are on 4.4.2 and no upgrades are available other than by installing a custom ROM.
Sorry, I didn't know this was strictly S4. I'm a bit unobservant. But for those who may randomly be brought to this page via Google. I did the update via Samsung Switch for the PC. Google it, should be the first link. Apologies to all for the mixup.

Seeking some assistance updating an unlocked (And out of US) G892A from stock

Hello Folks,
As the thread title states, I'm looking for a way to update to the current firmware from stock (G892AUCU1AQG4) - I bought the device a few days after it came out and promptly unlocked it and took it to Canada - OTA Updates are obviously disabled as I'm not on AT&T and there's no indication of a manual update method via USB on AT&T's support pages. Any chance someone has pulled ODIN files for all of the updates (As they seem to be building off of one another, indicating it's basically a nesting doll scenario where I assume I'll need to run update after update in sequence)? Or is there another way to go about this that doesn't involve going stateside and buying a sim and plan?
Did some searching and found a few threads with links or references to the stock files, but didn't see any means to update from stock to current (Or even just the first 8.0 variant)
Cheers and thanks in advance if anyone can save my Canadian bacon.
Edit for background information: I've tried forcing an update via SmartSwitch (RIP Kies) but it says the device is up to date, making me think it's also just checking for an OTA update, but given there's no update available on my wireless network it just dead ends.
