Pros and cons of having an encrypted data partition.
Keeping in mind you're going to have TWRP running on recovery.
I'm assuming if you're planning on switching roms in the future even though you're on stock oxygen right now you should move to a decrypted /data partition so you can flash different roms in the future.
Some custom ROMs seem to require an encrypted data partition. That may become standard or not. Depends.

I think it's depend on what you need to do.. or better in which rom do you want to install
So I know you can go from not encrypted to encrypted while the OS is online can you do a similar thing form encrypted to decrypted? Or are we talking about a wipe to get data back to decrypted.

Decrypting will wipe all your data including internal storage. That's why it is such a PITA

I guess that answers the question I'll start decrypted then.

I really want to flash custom ROMs to my device (like ports or LineageOS, for instance), but I really can't do without the files in my /data partition, backing up is not an option really.
So, if I flash a custom ROM to my device, will I lose my data? Does this vary from ROM to ROM? Thank you!

/data must be wiped when flashing other rom. That partition contains the apps and their data. Someone correct me if it contains something else too.
What files you're worried about? Why not backing up?

The /data partition only contains app data and things like that. All your pictures and music on the internal storage will still be there unless you wipe internal too.
Hello everyone!
I am wondering how to enable encryption of my P9 Lite running Nougat B370. My phone is rooted, bootloader unlocked and TWRP installed, if that is relevant.
In the menus I don't find any option to encrypt my phone. So, anyone knows if it is possible?
If you mean data encryption, it is already encrypted.

You sure about that? Because TWRP can access my data partition without pin...
Is there any way to check whether disk encryption is truly enabled?

It's encrypted unless you unencrypted it with twrp but the latest update of twrp (nouget) lets you backup data unlike twrp on MM.

It's strange though, I've never unencrypted my phone with twrp. But when I boot into twrp my whole data partition is open for access without any sort of password/pin. Seems to me there is no encryption active.
TWRP can mount data partition, but it does not mean that it is able to decrypt it.
It can backup/restore or format it which is what usually what a TWRP do, if you install a custom ROM like LOS you will need to format it because the system can't decrypt it while stock ROM can do it.

What I meant by my post is not only that twrp can mount the data partition. I can also access all my files within said data partition.
I see people are experiences alot of problems prior to flashing custom ROMs.
I hear people saying you need to decrypt device etc.
Can anyone run me through what this means? And what exactly needs doing? I've got the jist it's something to do with user data wiping?
All current ROMs don't support encryption, that's why we have to decrypt to flash.
Decrypting involves just formatting data in TWRP...Not wiping.
In future ROMs may support encryption if that is fixed you won't need to decrypt to flash ROMs.

Thanks for your info. I will continue to flash a custom ROM then... How do I just format data?

I was wondering about this. My device is encrypted and I was flashing a ROM. And I only wiped System, Cache, Dalvik and Data. I didn't wipe Internal Storage. But After I Flashed the new ROM my internal was also wiped! So I wanted to know if this is what supposed to happen with encrypted device, or it was a mistake?

Wiping data deletes all settings and apps, wiping internal storage deletes all pictures, music and stuff. Unfortunately, I don't know why your internal storage got wiped, never happened for me.

I know that. As I said I'm encrypted, is it because of that?

Unlikely, I'm also encrypted and it never happened for me. What recovery do you use? I use the Chinese TWRP version.

Its told to be buggy, especially in combination with Oreo Roms. I recommend to either use ibe TWRP (by a Chinese developer) or blu_spark TWRP, you can find them both here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=74946590&postcount=2

Hello, if you flash the rom without no verity but did not format internal storage afterwards, the phone won't boot.
You need to format internal storage so OxygenOS can encrypt the internal storage upon boot, but that's only possible if it's formatted before.

Okay, so a internal data Backup is important.

Yeah it's a little bit inconvenient, but sadly the encryption cannot be forced otherwise on OxygenOS
