Hey, recently came from an outdated OPX, and just wanted to see how much of that functionality I can replicate on the OP5.
For example, I've heard CM is kinda dead, so that's out the door. For a custom ROM, what's a good one that people would recommend? I've seen FreedomOS, Resurrection Remix, and LineageOS.
Next, for rooting, would it be a similar process where I flash SuperSU and use Xposed Installer to find/install modules?
Any tips on customizing my device would be appreciated!
Thanks.
Lineage is CM. For rooting you can use Magisk or SuperSU. The choice is yours, but if you want to hide root, use Magisk.
As for Xposed, there is none for Nougat. So no modules for you; you will have to rely on the customization options of the ROM.
That being said, the most feature rich ROMs are Resurrection Remix and AICP.

Thanks for the reply and recommendations!
Are there any pros and cons between Magisk and SuperSU other than hiding root? Also what are the key differences in Lineage, RR and AICP that could help me decide between them?
In addition to that, what would a custom ROM include that stock OOS doesn't? I'm currently rooted with TWRP on stock ROM for now.
hiding the root is pretty much the biggest pro here as it would allow you to use apps such as pokemon go or android pay.
Yeah, that's actually a really nice feature. I couldn't play Pokemon GO since forever ago, and now I can make use of Android Pay.
I'm just still wondering on how to choose a ROM, there's a lot to choose from. RR official/unofficial and AICP are the ones that look interesting right now.

Those are the most feature rich ROMs. Since Xposed isn't an option, you may want to choose one of them.

I want to flash a custom rom to my Galaxy S5 900F, but I am not sure what the differences are between RR and LineageOS, and which one is "better".
Thanks in advance!
RR is based on LineageOS and RR has TONS of other features that LineageOS does not have. You even have lots of customisation options when you choose RR.
In my experience, RR is better and I'd personally recommend RR.
In terms of features, RR is definitely bigger and better. Although, in my opinion, that makes it way too complicated. The whole setup of RR is very much unintuitive and most of the extra features involved are just that; extra features. I would consider myself an advanced user having been in android for 5 years, but I barely used anything for the week or so I had RR on my phone. Also, with all tiny bits of customization the menus are very crowded. I mean, some of us don't have a whole afternoon to figure out every customization! And root access, do we really need that in nougat? Not to mention SeLinux. What do you so desperately need that you have to disable that?? LOS on the other hand is smaller, but much simpler. Heck, I'd even go so far as to say that everything just works, and whatever you can customize is easier to access! Also, things like Android Pay work if you flashed the su removal tool to get rid of root. The battery life also is great, and I only need to charge in the evening. I also shouldn't forget that the mantainers for LOS are much more reliable than RR and if you use haggertk's recovery, the OTA update goes seamlessly, like an OEM rom.
Bottom line if you want all the bells and whistles possible, RR is for you. If you want a clean ROM that does everything you need to smoothly, LOS.
Or heck, try 'em both out and see what you like!
i havent made the jump to nougat on RR yet, but its predecessor is pretty much amazing! So much so, that ive been reluctant to switch as of yet. I thought that the nougat RR was released before the CM project died and didnt think that it had switched over to the lineage base.
Resur is better
So I recently rooted my Moto X Pure Edition. I would like to install a Nougat rom, but I do not want something like Lineage OS or CyanogenMod, the only reason being that they don't support SuperSU. I looked through the list of Nougat roms on XDA and all of them are either really sketchy or don't appear to support SuperSU. I would also like a very close to stock experience, like LineageOS for example.
Thanks in advance,
Matt

You can just flash superSU.. ROM devs have not restricted flashing SuperSU on their ROMs, That'd be stupid
Your closest would would be Slim 7. Very barebones.
However, all Nougat ROMs at the moment have audio and call issues. Your best bet is to flash a nougat ROM from February

This... Custom Nougat ROM's for the Moto X Pure/Style are still not perfect, but Marshmallow ones are (nearly) perfect, but none give you the battery life of stock. :/
BTW, step lightly with SlimROMs... they have made some, umm, poor choices recently and have become the black sheep of valid GPL developers due to them stealing the Substratum theme code, rebranding it with their name, registering a copyright, and claim it as their own code, all of which is provable and in violation of the GNU GPL v3.0 license.

if you want pure stock like experience then i would suggest slim7 but its beta so it might not be as stable as a daily driver

Off topic: Wow, that is some shady stuff they're doing.
Currently the 13-Feb build of LineageOS is most stable Nougat with no bugs. Try it.
Audio and Mic both working perfectly fine.
Also you can either use SuperSU addon provided by Lineage team or Chainfire SuperSU. Both works fine but not simultaneously.

Hi Matt, why do you want SuperSU? have you already heard/read about Magisk?
I could advise you to try One of the Ground Zero ROMS, Tesla is really great! Good performance, good battery life and AOSP (stock based).
It has build in Root with Magisk and Magisk manager.
I've yet to set-up my new OP5, as i'm still undecided whether to stick with the stock 4.5.4 ROM, or try 1 of the custom ROMs that are currently available.
Who's stuck to stock, and who's tried/trying a custom with a kernel?
Stock ROM = ROM that was supplied with the OP5
Custom ROM = ROM that has been shared on forums by developers. etc.

As off now I am on stock but will surely be going over custom ROM and custom kernel. Custom ROM and Kernel surely gives some extra benefits over stock(battery backup and many other features.)
So just test the phone for any HW defects or any for a week or so and you are good to root.
As far as I'm concerned, stock is a custom ROM. Not sure which option on the poll to pick...

By custom, i'm refering to custom ROMs that XDA users have shared on the forum.

Most of what I needed custom ROMs for in the past can be accomplished with oxygen OS now so I probably wont be installing anything aside from OEM updates until they stop supporting this device, if I still have it at that time. And when I do, it's just to try out whatever the latest OS is so I'm familiar with the new features when I do upgrade.
I think the most I will do for now is root, and TWRP but I'm still up in the air about that.
I think Oxygen OS works really nice at the moment, i will stay stock for now.
Updates will come rapidly from Oneplus thus the custom ROMS are not worth it for me at the moment.
Once Lineage or RR Remix arrives i will switch to custom ROMS
I'm on FreedomOS and it's very faster then original OxygenOS... I like this for now better than the original one
I've had my OP5 since yesterday and it's been fantastic and I haven't felt a need to use a custom ROM at all. I also usually add a custom kernel to I can change sounds and increase vibration sensitivity (may still do a kernel). I'm getting just over 9 hours of SOT with everything stock. I mean hell I used Google Maps today for 1 hour straight and it only used 6% battery!? My Nexus would have lost at least 18-20%.
When it's all said and done, I'm sure I'll get the itch to ROM and kernel this phone, but this is truly the first phone I don't feel a need to right now. Of course I rooted the phone and applied TRWP the first 5 min I had the phone haha. That goes without saying for my root apps like TB, Accubattery and Nova Launcher.
Can anyone check if the jelly effect is still there after they flashed the custom roms?

that's exactly what i would do
I really like the stock ROM. Coming from Samsung and LG phones, the OP5 is already running the type of ROM I'd likely flash to those phones if I could. I did root it though, and I'll likely stay this way unless something really compelling comes up, or OP stops updating it.
Using stock for now. I personally see no point in switching to custom until AOSP/LOS based ROMs begin appearing. It's still going to be Oxygen OS with basically the same features if I'd switch now.
As of now i'm sticking with stock. The phone is still young and i expect software updates to happen more frequently. As soon as the ROM's have more time to be developed and mature and OnePlus slows down the updates I will probably switch. As of now all the ROM's and recovery's are still in development and I am choosing to wait till it smooths out a little.
I have tried AICP, Tipsy OS, Mokee, Lineage, Hydrogen os. I would say Stock is the best. My present setup.
Hydrogen Os 3.5.0
Root via Chainfire Super su
Official TWRP
decrypted
Android o emoji's
A few tweaks.
Enjoying every bit.
May switch if CMTE (CM theme engine) comes to lineage Is, not a fan of the present theme engine.
Rooted, because wanted to get rid of the annoying ads and have some tweaks
I'm on xXx 2.0 Stock ROM and it works great. I will wait until everything is working to move to custom rom.
FreedomOS is a very good rom.
Also with Boeffla, Magisk.
Sent from my 8GB/128GB OP5 using Tapatalk PRO ?

May I ask, how is your idle drain on H2OS? What did you tweak to improve battery life?
I'm on H2OS too (so far unrooted), and idle drain is crazy... I even uninstalled Google Play Services (using Yalp Store to get Google Play Apps). Now Android System and Android OS kill my battery haha.
Stock OOS 4.5.6
Rooted with Magisk
Pixel Launcher, Android Messages, Google Dialer
Works great!
Stock rom with dirty core, amazing, while dirty unicorns is not released

Hi guys!
Just a quick question - do I need to bother with a custom ROM on a rooted Oneplus 5? Or I can achieve all the modifications using additional apps with root access?
And if so, which custom ROM brings the most atop the already rich customisation options of OP5?
Thanks
You can do a lot of modifications with root using third-party apps such as substratum, xposed, etc.
Yes, with a custom rom you can make many more changes, I recommend you resurrection remix.
Thanks a lot for your opinion!
How does the Resurrection compare to LineageOS? I'm quite confused about all the options
Lineage OS could be said to be a kind of AOSP with minor modifications. From lineage os, developers create their own roms based on it, usually, there are exceptions. Resurrection Remix has taken the best of these roms: "CM team, Lineage, DU, AICP, OMNI team, SLIMROMS", thus allowing the user from a menu in settings to make a lot of changes. I do not know if I explained well.

I need xposed so can't goto PIE and I use social apps a lot too like snap and instagram, new builds of lineage are kinda funky so please suggest a good Oreo ROM or should i used a debloated stock

Xposed and the stock debloated seem to be doing a great job for me, so IMO stick to debloated stock if you don't want any hassles and lots of troubleshooting.
Plus, the development for oreo has practically stopped, yet CRdroid, lineage and to some extent Havoc OS are great. Well but you don't want funky so.....
I need xposed too?. Gravitybox is the next best thing to a custom ROM, I am sure you know that among other goodies..
