is there a reason why android forces devices to reboot on sim change ?
and any way to prevent this ? i can switch applications alright but that pesky notification stays on top.
You should never change SIM when the device is on. Doing so is stupid.
My Gnex was stolen a few months before I got my N4, and although I tried to track it the thief was "clever" and simply turned the phone off. I think he then took the SIM out before turning it back on, so that even when powered up it never connected to the network and he had time to wipe/sell/use my device. The biggest lesson I learned was to lock my phone, and so my N4 has a PIN code. However, I was thinking that a thief could still do the same thing if this one is ever misplaced and I would be screwed. Is there a way to prevent someone from shutting down the phone without unlocking the device? At least this way you would be able to track it or install tracking software until the battery dies.

I have Avast! installed on mine and when I changed out the Sim at the store the other day, the phone freaked out and sent me text messages (to my backup phone number) of the location and the new phone number. I'm about 90 percent sure that some of the other settings in the app lock the ability to wipe the phone... but I'm new to this Android thing and I could be wrong (workaround via fastboot?).
Anyway, if this is the case, Avast should calm your fears... plus its free.
What if the other person simply turns the phone off?
theres nothing you can do after they turn it off they will just restore the device, even if your carrier blocks your imei number, they can just use the phone in another country ,you can only protect your information on the device
If you have a rooted device you can install Cerberus as a system app, so it will survive to wipe. But disable power off is impossible.
I realize it is impossible to disable power off (for good reason!), however there should be a way to disable it when the phone is locked. In fact, I cant think of a single reason the phone SHOULD allow you to power it down while it is locked.

A single reason?
You turn your phone screen on. It randomly locks up and not responding.
Oh no what do I do now?! I can't pull my battery!!!!!!
Long press hold for 10 seconds. Phone turns off.
Long press is encoded within the phone and can't be disabled, it's down to the bootloaderish level.
I cannot find a solution for this but the issue is when I miss a phone call when the phone is in my pocket, it automatically unlocks, and drains my battery.
I'm running 4.4.2 rooted on my AT&T Moto X, and I thought 4.4.2 would fix it. I do not have a screen lock
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks!

Hmm sounds like a strange issue...
You mean you don't have a screen pin/code/password, or that you don't have even the sliding unlock button?
Have a look in Settings > Display
What timeout do you have listed under sleep? The default is 30seconds, but it goes all the way up to 30min (which I would expect could definitely drain some battery...
Let us know and we may be able to help you further...

I do not have a password lock on my phone, Just the active display slide to unlock the phone. When a call comes in, I get the display to answer or ignore, but if I leave it go, it will just unlock to the home screen, then after a short time, the screen will shut off.
Thanks!

Ok, that is definitely not normal. Are you BL unlocked, or are you using the Pie root exploit? Or Safestrap?
I would suggest flashing the entire 4.4.2 AT&T SBF file using the manual method as described in the Return to Stock thread:
DO NOT DO THIS IF YOU ARE USING SAFESTRAP
http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/guide-moto-x-return-to-100-stock-using-t2446515
You will download the 4.4.2 AT&T SBF file from here: http://sbf.droid-developers.org/phone.php?device=0
As I seem to be telling people often, the only way to fix a corrupted filesystem (OR modifications made by previous exploits like Pwn/SlapMyMoto and MotoWpNoMo) is to flash the entire SBF file. Performing a "factory reset" cannot repair a damaged filesystem.
Often, it will fix ALL of your problems.
Good Luck
Did you install any apps, that plays with those settings after rooting?
thanks for the replies guys...I don't think so on the apps after root. IIRC, it did this before rooting the phone, so I thought it was a 4.4 issue.
it will unlock to the home page after every call, unless I answer, or ignore the call.
I'm using Xposed with these modules:
App Settings
GravityBox
HideCarrierMotoX
MinMinGuard
SoftkeysFadeMod
Twisty Switch
Xblast Tools
XPrivacy.
Again, I do not have a lock screen..when I try to enable one it does something funky with my electronic buttons, even after reboot. Not sure if it's because of SoftKeysFadeMod, or what..
I'm surprised others have not had this issue.
Thanks for you help.

May I ask if I understand correctly? You have no security setting, only active display enabled. If this is the case, this seems like normal behavior.
You screen turns on when you get a call, you don't answer. Until the screen time out kicks in, you see your home screen.
Once it goes dark, you should have an active display notification.
What Am i missing or what behavior are you expecting?

you pretty much hit it on the head...I was hoping the phone's display would not unlock to my desktop if I miss a call, but rather show the missed call on the active display.
I'm going to enable a security setting, and see if this changes the outcome.
Thanks
After enabling the swipe to unlock, I no longer have an issue with my phone unlocking when I miss a call. That seems to be the solution.
Thanks for your help
Running stock - I recently wiped and managed to forget my password. As you all know biometrics won't work upon a fresh reboot. Well, I tried all I could remember and had no success. I found a link to samsung accounts which will remote unlock. Great!
Except now when I boot the phone it's a black backdrop "Please input pw to 'turn on' device'" and can see it's automatically set into airplane mode. I can't access the notification bar, I can't send the unlock command......what can I do?
Do I have to seriously wipe again?
don't bother replying as the phone wiped itself. Piece of **** phone software is a hunk of garbage. One single restart locked the whole phone out from ALL connectivity. No wifi, no cell, no anything.
What is the god damn point of remote software to unlock, track, locate devices if ONE ****ING restart locks out the entire software suite? Knox is trash.
Hello, my girlfriend uses this phone. Even I told her it is not good, she often uses it with battery charged to barely few % and sometimes the phone due to battery is low is turned off. Sudenly a recovery screen appeared. I did wipe data. But it probably does not work because when the device is turn on her own photo is still on background. There is possible only to go into settings but only to several options, unfortunately developer settings does not work even "I am a developer" (by clicking on the MIUI version several times). The bootloader is locked and there is not possible to login into MI account (and even she did not use it). Fastboot mode work, but due to locked bootloader I am not able to flash anything. Is there a chance to repair the phone? Thank you in advance.
