A couple of months back, I updated from Kitkat to Lollipop using these great instructions and ever since, I've had two persistent problems, and I'm wondering if anyone else has:
1) Wi-fi cuts out every few days requiring a reboot fix. This seems to be related to some sort of DNS issue.
2) Receiving picture texts (MMS) show up as "Message size: 2KB Expires: (date)" with no way to download or view. I see no workaround other to tell friends to email me pictures instead of texting them.
In short, I've got two problems that involve sending/receiving data after I put a ROM on this Verizon phone.
I've tried a factory reset, but haven't gone back to Odin yet to try to put PB1 on again (or a different ROM?). The good news is SafeStrap recovery is on the phone now, so maybe I can play with that somehow. What can I try next to resolve these two problems? I can live with them with the reboot and avoiding MMS, but they are not trivial, and really, kind of annoying.
Thanks for any guidance or advice. Please help.

Hello everyone...a little important matter to me. Has anyone rooted through "Revolutionary" with their Evo and experienced the following symptoms (BTW im unrooted now so these issues followed my after going stock again)...
1.Unable to receive text messages but can successfully send text messages out ( I called Sprint and they could not fix this)
2.Unable to retrieve Voice mails ( I called Sprint and they reset my VM system so im getting them now but im not receiving notifications for them I have to manually call the VM *2 number to listen to them).
3.Camera and camcorder do not work properly...yes they work however if im recording or taking a picture in portrait mode the phone doesnt seem to recognize this and the layout stays in landscape mode. (I havent told Sprint about this issue as I just realized it after I took it in to a local Sprint store and the tech told me he found this issue...i believe he also realized i had previously rooted the phone however they are still sending me a replacement phone today (free of charge).
Main thing is I would love to root my phone again however under these circumstances it would be difficult for me to just root it knowing these same problems can occur again. I love Sense 3.0-3.5 and going back to using a 2.3 UI is not somthing I would wish on anyone else...If anyone here has a solution or has gone through or is still going through these problems please i beg you..respond to this post or PM me. my UN is drewskee. I need advice and I want to use a ROM. Much thanks to anyone who can help or atleast relate. ..and i have checked all over Google to find an answer and theres nothing solid out there...ive tried a bunch of stuff ..and as you can see i had to make my final decison to just unroot andthat didnt work so im hoping this community can lend a hand, Thanks everyone.
MMS FIX
Use to work as Tier 2/3 Tech Support, so I have a few tricks for you to try. After flashing skip all tutorials, syncs, and setups. Update profile immediately followed by prl. If unable to do so, power down phone and pull battery (soft reset), power up and update profile and prl. If still doesnt update, boot into recovery and wipe cache and dalvik and try again.
Remember these simple rules: MMS is dependent on signal strength. If you have a problem with text and updating profile and prl, its because of signal strength. If your roaming and have a poor signal, none of these features will work.
^^^This! I made that mistake once, didn't update.
Mistress of Mischief
I'm guessing it's fairly unusual around these parts but my S4 is completely stock, but I'm still having issues. I'm not particularly looking to root my phone at this stage either.
This has been bugging me since the OTA update (to Android 4.3), my phone locks up or freezes for short bursts - up to about 5 seconds sometimes. The phone is unresponsive during that time, it's most noticeable whilst texting - the line stops following my movements 1-2-3-4 then catches up, and whilst sliding between screens - it freezes mid 3d animation. It happens fairly frequently, many times a day and I'm not a heavy user. Strangely as part of my testing I tried running the stopwatch from the clock app and couldn't notice the 100th of seconds pause at any stage even after watching for several minutes.
Is anyone else experiencing this? Can anyone suggest where to start troubleshooting? Could it be a setting or an app causing this behaviour?
I did try searching and scanning the forum but please direct me if I've missed a similar thread.
Craig
Possibly factory reset may help, as you cant do much else on stock.
And I basically run stock also, phone is originally 02, but I flashed EE stock rom.
Anyone got a list of everything I need to backup before doing a factory reset.
The obvious I can think of are:
Apps
*Photos
*Text Messages
*MMS Messages (if separate)
*Call Log
*Access Points (not too bothered about)
*Contacts (all on-line anyway)
Bookmarks (not the end of the world)
Screen Layouts (is that possible)
I think I can handle the ones marked with *'s, but open to any advice on the others.
(Searching the forums for backup, restore or reset throws up too many results to help)

Download EFS professional mate and backup your EFS file incase something happen to your phone (EFS CONTAINS YOUR DEVICE IMEI WHICH IS VERY IMPORTANT.maybe you might need it In a future, but we never know )
I too have the same issues on Stock H3G 4.3, particularly with Messaging. I'm unlocked however (tried H3G to see if the network improved with the bundled modem etc.). Are you able to flash a BTU rom?
Is that MK9.
You can get btu from a mega link that Repulsa posted the other day.He also posted a link for 3uk also, both you guys should download it for future reference as it only takes 20 mins opposed to 7 odd hours elsewhere.
Same here contacted as Samsung no joy just advised factory reset 3uk don't want to know my s4 has got worse made me think I should of kept my nexus 4 I can't go back because of Knox
Sent from my Amazon Kindle Fire2 using xda app-developers app
Definitely going to try a factory reset, it's got to be worth a go, but I just need to figure out how to back up as much as I can first.
Just realised I need to add my WhatsApp conversations too.
A bit more searching for tools then I'll give a go.
Success
Hoo-rah!
A "Factory Reset" seems to have done the trick.
To fully see if a reset would work I elected to not restore any information from either Samsung or Google. Samsung said my data would be cleared from their servers .
After going through a few set-up wizards (Samsung and Google) I was able to test whether the lag was still there by typing a text message. After turning the "Continuous input" back on to get the swype-style line I was pleased to find that it no longer pauses .
I also pleasantly found that under the Samsung Account I was still able to restore my backed up data which returned my call logs and texts.
The phone has returned to default, with screens filled with Samsung apps, so I'm busy trying to clean those. I seem to have lost the 3 app too, but was that pre-installed?? I'm slowly adding apps back in case one of them caused the issue.
Thanks all.
Have searched extensively and found no working solution to this issue. Return would be a last and unwanted resort. Here's the deal. Mobile Hotspot performs strangely no matter what android version I run. In marshmallow it would turn off during use. In nougat it would just crash and need to be restarted. It most reliably occurs when playing lan minecraft over 2 comps on the hotspot but will still have the issue randomly even when only 1 device is connected. Many calls to various companies have all resulted in "send it back in". This is infuriating as this feels like a software issue not a hardware issue, I just can't see how it can be any other way. I have tried everything I could think of and had no luck, here's the list of what i've tried so far:
Restart phone
Factory reset
update to latest firmware
downgrade back to original marshmallow firmware
there is no access to advanced settings for hotspot so timeout is non-existant
reset network settings
edit: also tried ElementX kernel still have the same problem
tried flash-all to stock Marshmallow firmware without restoring apps or settings
RMA TWICE
etc. (any others I've forgotten that I did I will edit and add if ppl suggest it)
Nothing works, before I downgraded back to MM I did capture a bug report when the crash happened on latest nougat. I have no idea if I caught relevant info but will include the zip here anyway. Any help is massively appreciated.
Flash the correct factory images using google flash-all method (backup data first or remove -w in the script!). Upon startup do NOT restore settings apps etc.. and test.
If it doesn't work post a bug report on google website.

if it wasn't clear in my post I was at factory default and the problem occurred and have restored and erased a few times. If the method you're describing is different form having out of the box stock please elaborate, I only flashed a kernel recently as a further last resort.
By not restoring settings are you referring to not allowing google backups to restore? and finally if you can provide a link to where exactly I am to post this bug report I would appreciate it, I have posted in what I thought was official channels with a bug report and was told to call in, which is stupid, considering if I leave a bug report why not read it and get back to me?
Anyways thanks for reply and any further info you give

Finally got back from vacation and had time to try your request. used flash-all method and did not restore any apps or settings and hotspot still did not work. any other info or at least a link to where I should post a bug report to google as I have used the report function through the device and have posted on nexus help forums and not received answers. I really don't want to have to do an rma as I hate the thought of receiving a refurb phone when I wanted a brand new one and they sent me a broken one
well all is officially lost as I am in the process of doing an RMA. Multiple phone calls between carrier and manufacturer see each company blaming the other with no solution in sight. Fingers crossed hard enough to bleed that somehow a new phone or any "repairs" done to mine will fix the issue. Come back in a few weeks for an update. :crying:
I would confirm with T-Mobile that your line is provisioned with Tethering. When testing an AT&T SIM from a friends UDP (no tethering) account, this is what would happen. My T-Mobile and Verizon accounts both allow it, so it just works.

I have tethering on my account and have had it for 2 years. worked flawlessly on other devices before switching to this one. It also doesn't explain why it could work for hours at a time before failing. Or why it would consistently fail within minutes when playing LAN minecraft.
Well Huaweii has been an absolute joke, after 3 weeks of terrible communication and no transparency I finally received my phone in the mail (no email notification on if it is a replacement device or not) and the issue still persists. I'm at a loss for what to do.
[Resolved] I used the Dirty Santa method to root and load TWRP; still on what's left of the factory ROM. So far the only issue I'm having (other than the known quirks) is with SMS. MMS seems to be trucking along w/o problems. SMS was working all day yesterday then it decided to give me the no-service toast message this morning. I've been poking around the forums for solutions, but most of the search results are Sprint-specific. I think it's a PRL/APN issue, but I have to use Shortcut Master Lite to even get a peek at the info. I'm not even sure if I've been in the right areas at that. I fumbled around and got SMS working again a few minutes ago and have no idea what I did or if it'll stick. TIA for any insight the community can give me.
I'd KDZ and get back to stock. If that issues still persists it may be something wrong with your device.
I was afraid someone would say that. Have to go research the process and hope there isn't an OTA lurking about that blocks D.S.
Seems that the SMS connectivity is lost after a reboot. Wish I could figure out what I changed last time that got it working.
About Phone says mobile network is connected as long as wifi is off.
I'm almost ready to revert and root again. Does anyone have a link to the Verizon APN settings? I seem to find references to every other carrier's info except "Big Red"
Edit: Found this in a Pixel forum. ZVW APN Info
So far it seems to have worked and has survived one reboot. :fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed:
I'm hoping somebody has experienced this before and found a fix and can help me out...
All day I've been struggling to send SMS messages... I'm on 11.0.1.1, magisk rooted, with RICE installed. Everything was working great but today when i woke up, i was unable to send SMS messages...
I'm receiving them, but sometimes they are delayed and i get a few at a time with nothing coming in again for a short time after that, but i've made no changes to my phone in the last 2 days. I've rebooted a few times between then and now (twice yesterday, just because), so i cant really understand why i would just randomly be unable to send text messages or why they are received in bursts like this?
I've gone in and reset my "Wi-Fi, Mobile & Bluetooth" settings from within the reset options, and this appears to fix the issue, but only for a minute or so and suddenly they stop sending again... I thought maybe its the tower, so i used my daughters phone to text my wife and that worked perfectly fine. Immediately before and after, mine wouldnt send.
Any ideas, links, or guidance that might help me figure this out?
Since there's been some updates and no responses to my thread, i wanted to revisit this and see if i'm still the only one on earth with this issue.
The issue seemed to have completely gone away on its own, no idea why or how... But a couple weeks ago i decided to install the update to 11.0.2.2 on my IN11AA. Ever since, my phone will randomly stop receiving SMS messages completely. I can still send, just cant receive. The only way to fix this is to reboot.
Anyone else with this issue? Anyone find a reason for this? A fix perhaps?

Seeming this issue doesn't seem to be widespread, could be a carrier side issue?
It's a shame we don't have dual boot capabilities because you could have switched to stock and checked.
Also try a secondary SIM from maybe someone in your household and send using that SIM and see what happens.
I know there are delays after rebooting, I do a lot of magisk module work and every reboot try sending notifications using SMS or some other methods and I get around 3 mins no send or receive but not at the length you do.

I just had the issue again yesterday. Wife and I started texting eachother at about 8am, except, i didnt receive any of her messages until 5:30pm when she got home and told me she had been texting me. I rebooted 3 times, which once usually resolves the issue but not this time. I had to go into the settings and reset my WiFi/Mobile/Bluetooth settings, then it worked immediately.
Because of the solutions, i wouldnt think its a sim issue, but im going to test it anyway. I've factory reset a few times in the past and i still get the issue. I've had the issue while rooted and not rooted. Four of us have phones, 3 are Samsung and then there's mine, and mine's the only one with the issue.

What SMS app are you using? I wonder if you have enabled RCS messaging the new Google style messaging? Because maybe it uses WiFi to download some of the SMS, and if your carrier doesn't support it maybe you only receive it when you are on WiFi.
Try on WiFi then try just on mobile data and see if you notice.
I attached a photo check the top setting. Google might be persisting your setting (if you are using Google messages)
Also why don't you and your wife try a simnswap next time you happen and you are both at home, if your wife doesn't receive it then it's sim/network related.

I'm using Google Messages, and yes i do have RCS enabled. I dont believe thats the case though because the messages that are blocked are sometimes just an "ok" message. I'm almost always on WiFi though too.
The primary issue with sim swapping with my wife is that we would need to swap sims for up to 2 weeks since sometimes I have no issues for 2 weeks, then i get the issue once or twice a day for three days. The worst part (for me anyway) is that her screen is SHATTERED on her phone (she's using a Note10+) and its hard to see anything, so i've been trying to get her to get a new phone. I think we might be FINALLY upgrading her (after 5 months) to an S21 Ultra, so maybe we'll give that a shot there.
I'm actually wondering if it has something to do with messages for web. I've noticed that the issue only really happens after using that, but.. It doesnt always happen after using messages for web, so it might just be a coincidence.
I'm pretty sure its not Google Messages, or RCS, and fairly certain its not messages for web, because i used to use Signal only, and i still had the issue a few times.

When you say "ok" are you just sending short messages or the suggested replies by Google?
I had problems with auto reply in notifications for a while.
Tbh I just use telegram or signal becuase they don't require being connected to the device directly when using the web/desktop versions.
Yeah swapping for 2 weeks isn't great!
Interesting you had this issue with signal too, sounds like Google cloud messaging (needed for any app push notifications and messaging) is in a standby mode.
You got naptime or servicely installed? Shame no one else is seeing this issue might be easier to diagnose
