[Solved] Trying to flash TWRP, fails to boot into recovery. - LG G6 Questions and Answers

Hi everyone,
I'm no stranger to flashing custom ROMs or recovery on my devices, but I can't figure out for the life of me how to get TWRP on my LG G6 (H870)..
I flashed the recovery partition using fastboot, which outputs:
Code:
> fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.1.1-0-h870.img
target reported max download size of 536870912 bytes
sending 'recovery' (21348 KB)...
OKAY [ 0.567s]
writing 'recovery'...
OKAY [ 0.218s]
finished. total time: 0.786s
Then I use
Code:
>fastboot reboot-bootloader
rebooting into bootloader...
OKAY [ 0.020s]
finished. total time: 0.021s
This restarts the device.
I then immediately start holding the power and volume down buttons and as soon as the logo appears, I let go and hold the buttons again. (this is described by a few websites as the way to do it).
The device reboots twice and then boots straight back into the stock ROM that was shipped with the device. TWRP is gone after that.
Does anyone know how to get into TWRP before it is overwritten by the stock ROM on boot?
EDIT:
When trying to boot from the recovery image, I get the following error:
Code:
>fastboot boot twrp-3.1.1-0-h870.img
downloading 'boot.img'...
OKAY [ 0.546s]
booting...
FAILED (remote: unknown command)
finished. total time: 0.566s

This has been repeted endlessly, after flashing twrp you need to press and keep pressing power and vol- until it turns off, then press and keep press both until the lg logo, leave the power button and immediately press it and keep press it until you reach the reset instructions, follow them and it'll boot in twrp.
Oh and this is written in the installation instructions in the official twrp thread, both fastboot boot and fastboot reboot recovery command won't work.

So to be clear:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
fastboot reboot
hold POWER + VOL- until LG logo
release POWER briefly but keep holding VOL-
hold POWER + VOL- again while the logo is still displaying
wait for reset instructions
?
Because, at step 6~7, the phone just reboots because I'm holding POWER and VOL- too long (about 7~10 seconds).
It also shows the orange warning that points to http://g.co/ABH while I'm holding the buttons.

This is the correct way to reboot in TWRP the first time, good luck :fingers-crossed:

Yep, that's what I've been doing the whole time.
I think the recovery file I downloaded was corrupted during download or whatever, because I downloaded it again (same link, exact same filesize) and tried again and now it worked first try!
Thanks for your help and patience !

No, you didn't follow the procedure and you don't read carefully what @Killua96 wrote: you don't have to use “3. fastboot reboot“ adb command. Instead of it follow Killua96`s advice “after flashing twrp you need to press and keep pressing power and vol- until it turns off“
Just simple as that.

I guess I didn't explicitly mention this, but I have tried both ways.
Maybe my timing was off, I don't know. Anyway it's working now. Thanks for the suggestion!

You're always welcome.

Is there a way to flash twrp without wipe all data? I flashed a newer version but couldn't use twrp anymore, because I should wipe my data... (like the first flash....) with the old version of twrp I couldn't mount my external SD card, so it wasn't able to made a full backup. (not enough free space on internal sd)

Excuse my double posting... ?

doesnt work im just seeing the twrp logo and then reboits in system

The 1st time it tries to boot in system. If you stop it with the same key combination (vol-, power), the 2nd time you will get into recovery!
(then the decryption issue will start, where I am still blocked)

I have the same issue. I've downloaded the twrp 3.2.3 for my G6 H870. I've unlocked the bootloader and it seems I flashed the recovery successfull. After flashing it I shut down the phone by pressing Vol- and Power and try to boot into recovery by the known Vol- and power with short release of the power-button. But still it brings me to the factory-reset-page. What am I doing wrong?

When you successfully flash twrp using your computer by typing "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img"
You will see something similar to this:
target reported max download size of 536870912 bytes
sending 'recovery' (21348 KB)...
OKAY [ 0.567s]
writing 'recovery'...
OKAY [ 0.218s]
finished. total time: 0.786s
When you seee this......Unplug phone from computer then hold power and volume down.
Then after a few seconds it will restart.
Keep holding power and volume down.
Soon as you see lg logo keep holding power and volume down....but soon as you see lg logo keep holding volume down but release finger off volume for half a second and press and hold power again until you get to the white reset screen.
Use volume down to select "yes"
And again on next screen use volune down and select "yes"
It will NOT reset your device....it wil instead, after a few seconds boot into recovery.
Then in recovery flash either supersu.zip or magisk.zip
.
30 seconds at most it will then be successfully rooted.
Then restart your phone.
If it says that recovery is not instslled or do you want to install recovery...select NO....restart phone and voila...you have twrp and a rooted G6.
Matt.

It has worked for me, thank you

For recent ROM on H870 I was only able to make work TWRP working with unofficial package - https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g6/development/recovery-lifes-bad-recovery-porting-t4023239

twrp-3.4.0 doesnt work but prior version does

For me, the problem was that the latest TWRP version https://dl.twrp.me/h870/twrp-3.4.0-0-h870.img.html did not boot into recovery. Instead, only the previous version https://dl.twrp.me/h870/twrp-3.3.1-0-h870.img.html works. Very strange. Apparently there will be a new version of TWRP soon so lets hope and see.

Make sure your RS988 is fully updated, the rebooting into the bootloader is only unlocked in the most recent updates.
Step 2:
Enable Developer options and USB Debugging
Step 3:

Code:
adb reboot bootloder
Step 4:
Once in bootloader run
Code:
fastboot flash recovery [path to twrp image on your pc]
Step 5:
Turn off the device DO NOT let it boot back into android!!
If you do boot back into android, you will need to re-flash TWRP (Steps 1-4)
Step 6:
With your device unplugged, hold power and volume down, releasing the power button for a moment when you see the LG logo, then
re-pressing the button to enter recovery, on the following screen select yes both times

At this point, you will see the TWRP splash and reach a screen asking you if you want to allow system modifications.
By swiping right, you will trigger dm-verity, and if you don't follow step 8 you will be unable to boot!
If you are going to root your device or follow the rest of these steps, then it is safe to swipe right and enable modifications.
Step 8:
Only if you want internal storage or data to work in TWRP:
Go to [Wipe] -> [Format Data] (not advanced wipe) -> type "yes".
WARNING: This will wipe your internal storage, disable encryption, and factory reset your phone!
Go to [Reboot] -> [Recovery].
Step 9:
Please consider backing up your stock boot partition in TWRP before proceeding to the next steps!
Step 10:
If you want to be rooted with SuperSU:
Download the latest SuperSU stable by Chainfire.
Without exiting TWRP, transfer the SuperSU zip to your device over MTP* and flash it using [Install] in TWRP.
-or-
If you only want a bootable system partition or writable data in TWRP:
Download dm-verity and force encryption disabler.
Without exiting TWRP, transfer the no-verity-opt-encrypt zip to your device over MTP* and flash it using [Install] in TWRP.
Step 11:
Go to [Reboot] -> [System].
---------End of jcadduono post clip-------------
Now upon reboot, the phone may loop a few times and take up to 5 minutes to complete the process.
When you get into the device, run through setup as normal and you will have SuperSu installed and you will be rooted.
I can not verify Magisk Root Yet but will be attempting to do so soon.
You guys that have the rs988 you may want to ask one of the devs to add support for LOS and custom ROMs. But don't bug them either.
Maybe @King_lilrowrow could help if he has time, although I know he's been busy lately with other things. Hopefully someone will help you guys out. I have no idea how to, otherwise I would try and help. Nice you guys have rootr and twrp finally though.
I am using latest version: RS98810d

After flashing recovery, unplug USB cable and pull battery. Put battery back in, then press and hold volume down (hold volume down entire time) and press and hold the power button, when you see the lg logo, let go of power button for 1 second and then press and hold power button again until it reaches factory reset screen. One at factory reset screen select yes both times and you'll enter TWRP. When using the buttons remember to never let go of the volume down button only the power button for 1 second at lg logo.
You can also try after flashing it:
adb reboot recovery
Note: you must reflash TWRP if you allowed it to boot into os without flashing SuperSU or magisk.

No problem! Glad we finally have it on RS988
I've held off on unlocking the bootloader and rooting, since it seems there currently are no ROMs available for the RS988 to flash. Basically you just end up with rooted stock?

Yes, currently all you can do is install TWRP and root stock. You can also install some audio mods like viper, but no custom ROMs yet for this version of the device.
Is there a touch TWRP recovery available? Granted I'm not sure if I will be able to flash it, since my power button is broken.

Yes it's touch TWRP, can't even remember last time I saw a non-touch based one, been at least 3 years or so. Anyways it's located in the op. As far as flashing it, I believe you can do it without the power button. The issue will be rebooting to recovery after flashing it to flash SuperSU or magisk (if you don't do that or at least get into TWRP before first bit after flashing and delete the recovery from boot.p file, TWRP will be overwritten by default recovery and you have to flash again). While in fastboot mode, after flashing you could try and use:
Code:
adb reboot recovery
Not sure if that will get work or not while in fastboot mode, but something to try since your power button is broke.

You can always check using LG bridge and use update feature. If just wanting to know because your wanting to root and get TWRP, try and follow the guide. If you're not on latest version you'll know because you won't be able to unlock the bootloader using fastboot. If you can unlock your bootloader, you're good to go.
Here's the link and info for LG bridge and using it to check for updates:

install TWRP successfully.
power off phone,
hold volume down +*power*button ...see lg logo, let go of power button then quickly press it again, into factory data reset screen,
it's show:
delete all user data(including LG and carrier apps) and reset all settings? choice ''yes'' twice, then it reboot to factory reset/wipe data, not into TWRP recovery, what's wrong? is TWRP flash failed?
How go to TWRP recovery mode??
Once your on the white page to format wipe just hit yes twice. This will boot to twrp.
For me it worked to
(backup all your data! If it fails, it erases everything on internal sd.)
1. flash twrp via adb
2. while phone is still in fastboot, press and hold volume down and power till lg bootlogo appears, release power for half a second, press it again till it asks you to wipe.
3. Where it asks you to wipe, choose yes, 2 times. It should not wipe but boot twrp.
4. I dont know if this step is necessary but i did it and it works now: Flash the twrp.img in twrp again (to see .img files in twrp, click on install image), choose recovery as partition.
Now it should be installed correctly. To boot twrp just power off your device and press and hold volume down and power till lg bootlogo appears, release power for half a second, press it again till it asks you to wipe. Choose yes 2 times.
at wipe screen,I hits yes 2 times, but it go erasing data screen, twrp not boot, what's wrong? flash twrp again?
thanks

When booted up, K4 note boots till boot logo and restarts in an infinte loop

Hey!
I tried to unlock the bootloader of my K4 note (with stock marshmallow rom) yesterday with
fastboot oem unlock
The unlock succeeded when I pressed the Volume Up button to confirm it. Then it showed me a screen to select where to boot(system, recovery, bootloader). I had to scroll the options with the volume down key, and then select it with the volume up key. But none of the volume rocker buttons responded. I couldn't select where to boot. Then, with the fastboot flash recovery command, I flashed the TWRP for stock ROM available in the Download section of this thread. But still the buttons did not respond, and fastboot reboot bootloader gave me this message:
C:\Users\Kartik Shankhavaram>fastboot reboot bootloader
rebooting into bootloader...
FAILED (remote: not support on security)
finished. total time: 0.012s

So I did fastboot reboot, and since then, the device has gone into an endless boot loop. It shows me the boot logo, then vibrates and restarts again.
When I press 'Power+Volume UP', I get the message
Have been in factory mode, Long press the power button and the normal boot
Click to collapse
Then, it starts the loop again.
With 'Power+Volume Down', I get
Have been in meta mode, Long press the power button and the normal boot
Click to collapse
and the same loop happens.
I read many articles about this and most of them suggest a problem with hardware or water in the phone. But my device was working when I connected it and not a drop of water fell on it, nor did it fall anywhere.
I'm at a loss and don't know what to do. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!
You need to flash stock ROM again.
And, after unlocking boot loader, you need to reboot to system properly and flash recovery

Stuck in fastboot after failed try to install lineageos for Redmi 7a

Newbie
I installed twrp on a Redmi 7A, I followed instruction to wipe the phone but at the moment to install the os image (which I am not even sure is working) I realised I copy the wrong file, so I poweredoff the pone to get the sd card to copy it and when I repowered I am stuck in fastmode.
sudo fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
sudo fastboot reboot
Keeps me in fast mode.
Is there anyway I can reboot with TWRP?
aside from the obvious power off then powering on pressing the power button and volume up, then releasing the power button when the phone starts, You might want to reflash via adb the boot.img and recovery.img you downloaded, to see those commands, go to this post:https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-7a/how-to/guide-twrp-root-magisk-custom-rom-t4027441

Unable to boot into newly-flashed recovery from fastboot (LineageOS 18.1)

Recently got a hold on the T-Mobile version of the OnePlus 6T. Already have a OnePlus5 running LineageOS as well and thought the installation would go as smooth.
Following these directions, I got through unlocking the bootloader (with the unlock_code.bin from OnePlus) and I thought I'd gone through flashing a custom recovery. I was able to boot into fastboot, ran # fastboot flash boot lineage-18.1-20210506-recovery-fajita.img, and shutoff the device. Now I'm stuck in a bootloop at the screen indicating that the device has been unlocked and data can't be verified.
While still connected to my PC, any combination of Power + Volume keys will flash the display and instantly go back to the bootload screen. The only way to shut-off the phone is to disconnect it and do either Power + Volume Up or Power + Volume Up + Volume Down; Power + Volume Down to try and boot into recovery does nothing. Plugging in the phone while off auto-starts it back to the bootload loop.
I can turn on the phone while disconnected, but the only way to escape the bootload loop is to boot straight into fastboot with Power + Volume Up + Volume Down. From here I can connect it to the computer and it's seen as a fastboot device. From here, however, any of the options will reboot into the bootloop.
Is there anything I can do from here? It's not a hard-brick, but I'm not sure why I'm stuck in a loop. The flashing of the recovery seems to have worked, no issues with A/B as stated could happen in the docs. I'm at a loss.

Yes, I can get the fastboot menu, but trying to boot from the lineage recovery image would take me straight to the warning page indicating the device is unlocked and to not store confidential data.
I just tried using the guide you posted to go with TWRP, but I'm having issues again with booting the recovery. Followed every step: downloaded the ROMs, flashed them all to the phone as per your script, was able to boot, chose the language and wiped, and once in the phone rebooted into the bootloader. But similar to before, I run # fastboot boot twrp-3.5.2_9-0-fajita.img, but now the phone seems to be stuck on the OnePlus logo with the words Fastboot Mode underneath.

You may need to start over. I the unfortunate part here is the TMobile 6T is a bit different and complicates things. Recent TMobile MSM Tools have been posted in the TMobile thread, they just aren't in the OP. I'll be honest I don't follow the TMobile devices, so I don't know much about what's best to use between versions and international tools and what not. There are a few TMobile users that posted in my Guide thread that you may want to tag and see if they can help?
