Fundowear vs Mediatek vs ??? - Other SmartWatches

So I just got my first smartwatch, a No.1 S9. Love it, but I'm still learning everything it can do.
One thing bothers me, though. No.1 suggests the use of the Fundo Wear app on my phone, which works, but doesn't let me swap watch faces, and constantly keeps a notification box (saying "SmartDevice Connected") on my phone's lock-screen.
Alternatively, I know I can use the Mediatek SmartDevice app instead (and it lets me swap in new watch faces).
Is there any real reason to not use Mediatek instead of Fundo Wear? I'm not really interested in tracking how many steps I take a day, or how well I sleep.
For that matter is there a third (fourth) contender that's compatible?

[Q] Android Wear - Themes and Watchfaces

Hi everyone,
I have not found this info so far, so I'm asking here:
Can Android Wear Smartwatches be equipped with custom watchfaces out of the box, like the Pebble? I know that Motorola is planning something like this, but I'd like to know, whether we'd be stuck with whatever Samsung, LG or whoever made the device allows, or if we can install Watchfaces from the Playstore/other sources? This would be a big factor for different screentypes, AMOLED could benefit greatly from Black and White watchfaces for example.
The same goes for the general theme/style. Is that alway "stock" Google Now look, or can we adjust it to fit our needs and/or to conserve power on AMOLED screens?
Thanks.
You can find Google I/O prese.tation on youtube and just find Android Wear presentation. It shows watchfaces, wallpapers etc.
Short answer - Yes you can change everything.

Thanks,
I was aware of the wallpapers, but not sure about watchfaces, since those are, according to what I read, the only things manufacturers (eg. Samsung, Sony et al) are allowed to customize. Now, just because Sammy is allowed to customized doesn't mean they'll allow me to customize...
I'll rewatch it and see what exactly they say...
UPDATE: I watched the presentaion again, but did not find any concrete evidence either way. Apps can have a custom UI, but I found nothing on 3rd party watchfaces.
Another question just popped up in my brain: What happens when the watch is not connected to the phone? How much functionality remains?
Also, can you actually answer a call on the watch? I'd assume not, since it has no speaker...

Regarding 3rd party watchfaces, that functionality isn't available today but has been promised in an upcoming release. Wear devices currently run Android 4.4W so I would assume it will roll out with L (if not before).
Just tested the functionality of the LG watch when not connected to a phone. It has limited functionality. No voice commands (because it normally uses the internet through your mobile device) but you do have access to the basics: steps, agenda, timers, timers alarms, stopwatch, etc and apps that don't require internet.
When you receive a call can answer/decline or decline & send a text (with preset and on the fly voice I think) straight from the watch but I believe you will need to use your phone or another Bluetooth device to actually talk the the person on the other end.
Hope this helps.
Thanks. That does help!

List of Smartwatch app compatibilities (WIP, help wanted)

So, I'm looking for a new Smart Watch, and decided to also check the apps. I didn't end up finding any real data on what works with whatand where to get them, so here we are. I started with just some notes, but I decided that maybe some other people could help and use it as well.
So if you happen to have a cheap chinese smartwatch, could you pop in to this list and add what watch you use with what app.
If you've tried a watch with some app and know it doesn't work, that would be swell too.
The idea here is to list compatibility for most, if not all, non-android wear smart watches and the apps floating around.
Hopefully, it will end up being useful so you can test the app before you buy your watch, or if you get fed up with the app it came with, see if there are alternatives.

K88H Is it possible update ?

Hello all,
I wanted a information.
I recently bought the following Smartwatch: K88H. The smartwatch works pretty well with IOS and I don't think it can be seen that the restrictions of IOS.
It is possible to update the firmware inside ?
Thanks to all
Vincenzo
Same boat
+1 - I have been reading what I can find on the internet about hacking/updating K88H but unfortunately there isn't a satisfactory amount of resources regarding this smart watch.
It's a great gadget though - if in doubt, just buy it, a great value for the price!
Back to the topic of this thread - There is value in looking for resources that talk about hacking/updating nuclear os as it's operating system that the watch is using.

I also have the K88H. I did not like some of the screens on the Notifications. It has a huge "BLOCK" button that if you touch it the screen pops up asking if you want to block these kinds of messages. I blocked all the apps I wanted in the Mediatek SmartDevice app on my Android Phone. So why would I want that second button in the way?
Long story short I used Golem_'s tutorial and found a better firmware. Follow his instructions to the letter. Make sure you back up your existing firmware before continuing. Our watch is the MTK2502A 128MB. My favorite firmware so far is the X-Watch firmware. Golem_ also has a collection of firmware for you to begin with. Engjoy...

apps for KW88

Hi,
I'm looking to create an app for a KW88 (KingWear) smartwatch I've purchased and awaiting it to be shipped to me.
As this smartwatch has a sim card, it may double as a phone. Therefore, I wonder, if I create a standalone app for the smartwatch (It is supposed to show the pictures of contacts and then, on press, call them), do I need to make a normal android app or an Android wear app?
(Implying it is possible to have a third party app completely standalone on the KW88 watch in the first place.....)
many thanks for the answers!
Regards,
Wattah

Careful, Wattah!
The KingWear KW88 runs on Android 5.1 and not Android Wear - which means it doesn't support apps made for Android Wear at all...
This standalone app you meantioned won't be integrated and run only if you open it manually. Native support in terms of using this app instead of the built in app will be difficult to work around. (see launcher apks on Google+ forums)
Hope that finds you well
Best regards,
Daniel
Welp, sorry, apparently I've never said anything back.
Thanks for the answer, as it actually made things a lot easier. I've now programmed an app and using a app called Always on, the app is nearly always on. What I intend to create is a skin over the KW88 device which will make it much more usable for elderly people.
What I noticed is that sometimes, using the physical button, the app will close and display the watch face. For us it is easy to navigate through the watch face, but I need it to be as easy as it can ever be and so, i need the face removed.... Is there any way to either: remove the face alltogether or have this app be incorporated in the face (it needs to be able to handle calls and use GPS)....

Hype Smart Watch (possible U8 clone)

I picked this watch up from Wal-Mart for $20, thinking it's a U8 clone. The internals seem the same, it seems to operate the same, but I'm having issues using the FlashTool to back up the rom.
Clearly, it runs some kind of watered-down version of Android. I want to sideload two specific apps onto the watch, as I'm going to use it as the functional portion of a tricorder replica. I want to load the old Moonblink Tricorder app (must be found online, not in the Play Store anymore) and the LCARS UI (available from the Play Store).
Anyone have any insight on how to sideload to this device or how to modify it so it's running a more familiar version of android?
Hype hy ttcm to u8 clone?
Did you ever figure out if the hype watch would be hackable. I can't find anything anywhere. I'd love to put a new os on it so I can have apps on it and send text messages and ect. K
