[Guide] How to improve battery life and keep the phone cooled down - Honor 8 Guides, News, & Discussion

Hi everyone, I just created this thread to share you my experience about shutting down 3 cores of my phone with Kernel Adiutor.
So, first of all, the phone is obviously a little bit slower in hard tasks/apps, but it is still performing well on average like basic tasks, running smoothly.
During my tests, my phone was able to stay smooth while doing basic stuff, same that I did before with all the cores activated.
And the Honor 8, was cooled down like it was doing nothing ! Watching YouTube videos in HD, playing 2D games, was more pleasant than before where I was in panic because it was really hot to touch.
Now battery side, this is also better because 3 cores are disabled, so more battery friendly.
And, when I was charging my phone with the fast charge, it was damn hot, with this, not anymore !
Using Kernel Adiutor, I've just disabled the following cores:
-6th core,
-7th core,
-8th core.
And everything else was in interactive state.
I'm not using any cases to cool down, just a tempered glass.
Personally, I'll stay like this, great performances ! I love again my phone !

Great, I'll try it and see if there's battery improvement

Okay, I've done some benchmarks, and the results confirm that the performances are decreased, the battery holds up better with 3 cores disabled, and the temperature is better. It's not a big difference, but for me, I see only improvements !

No, only in games that requires a lot of power
From yesterday, no issues, working fine, no lags in apps like facebook, youtube, and 2D games like C.A.T.S, works great, battery is a little bit better, for my usage, it can stay a day without charge

Hey everone, fast charge works perfectly fine with stock charger, and while charging, the phone did'nt get hot, it stays warm, but it's fine

It's impossible!!! 60-65°C? Fake!
i play games a lot on this device while having other apps open like facebook, twitter, whatsapp, snapchat,... Even wifi, data, nfc, syncing are on.
Battery life is outstanding and i've never had problems with heating up.
This device remains really cool as it performs heavier tasks. Although i don't know the specific temperatures, I wouldn't say it reaches 60-65°C.
But this could differ from model(L21 or L31) or even from device to device.
You should actually try it out yourself. If the device does heat up and stutters a bit that could be normal on heavier apps. But if it gets extremely hot you'd be better of taking it back for a checkup or something. Although some software tweaks might help aswell.
Also; the play store has got a variaty of so called "cooling" apps. Don't use these. As they only take up memory, ram and cpu or they could even bring some malware or just annoying ads.

I had a Sony Xperia Z3+ and when it was pure stock I would get 3-4 hours but that was with a disadvantage, I had to tailer myself to not game or use it heavily as it had the notorious SD810 and would easily hit 80°c while browsing and playing simple games. When a kernel came out SOT didn't improve much just user ex and heat. So yeah this 3T tops it in all my main areas sound, camera and can use it however I feel. :highfive:
First charge.

I haven't done anything, using dark theme's where possible but other than that it's just my daily usage but constantly. Today been using it on YouTube, Tidal streaming, browsing and playing pinout. Sitting at 25% 6H 48M SoT. I f**king love this phone. Just wait till I root and get the tweaks back on
Did you even use your phone? I bet you just enabled so the screen doesnt turn off and placed it on desk.. Thats unfair if you did that as the cpu is running on low mhz all the time
Some people get good battery on every device and some people always get bad battery. I always get great battery on all my phones and this one is no exception. I've hit 10, 11, and 12 hours screen on time and have not done anything to save battery.

People do a lot of stuff here just to get likes xD
I get 7-8 hours sot, using my 3T as any other phone.
I used to get aswell 7-8h on the Oneplus One, constantly on WiFi (with LTE it was worse, 5h SoT). Mainly using chrome, tapatalk, flipboard. (no games).
Now on the 3T its pretty the same (7-8h SoT on WiFi).
ofc games will drain it alot more. its depending on usage.
you also get different results when ure on Enterprise WiFis (high dtim interval, authentication system, etc.), then your WiFi could consume much(!) more battery.
at my work, even 4G takes less power than WiFi. While at home, wifi takes nearly nothing (8h idle on wifi = 1-2% max. drain)

Better battery life when switching to FHD or HD

I just got the upgrade to 7.0 and I wanted to see how much extra battery I could get if go into 720P. After having it at that for a few days i'm not really sure if there is a difference in battery life between 720P and 1440P. Can anyone confirm if you have personally tried to go down to 1080P or 720P and notice a difference in battery life?

Since no one is giving You serious answers...
Well. Switching to 720p should make the OS run at lowest GPU speed most of the time. So it should improve battery life. But for average user it won't give a big battery life improvement. If You're a heavy phone gamer then You might notice better battery life as games SHOULD be rendered in 720p instead of 1080p/1440p. So this way Your GPU will run at lower speeds and therefore save more battery. But I haven't done enough research on that, so that's just a theory.
But I'd say it's not worth decreasing Your image quality that much just for those 3-7% more battery. You can tweak Your kernel and get those extra % easily, while keeping 1440p.

I don't know about how much of extra battery life i am getting but i saw difference in charging time. I keep the phone on charging while going to work. On WQHD, the phone actually just maintains battery percent or sometimes even loses it when there are a lot of emails and texts coming in. The charging is slightly better on FHD, but on HD, it charges much faster much like the iphone i had previously.

Why would you get any more time reducing the screen when the phone is in standby? The screen isn't on then. This makes no sense.

You will not get much difference unless you play the game. As a consideration of this I give an example in 1080p. Proc and gpu work will be stable at that number and will rise if i change to 1440p. And of course will eat more battery. It could be nicer at 720p (but I do not recommend it).

Increase of battery life implies more increase of standby time than screen on time. Screen on reduces battery much faster than screen off. Makes sense?

You should check your deep sleep percentagebif you are having a battery problems. Cause most of the time the s10 exynos does enter into deep sleep even while idle.
I easily get 10h+ Sot at 1440p.
I remember reading that running at fullhd+ will only give you about 30 min of extra battery life a day, I think the health of your eyes is more important, higher definition reduces eye strain and it definitely looks way better when gaming.
10 hours?
How do you manage that? I thought I was doing good with 7 or so. I have it WQHD with brightness set to just below the warning mark.
Anyways, the way I see it, if the resolution is there, I'm gonna use it. No point in having it not to use it. As long as my battery gets me through the day, which it has done easily since I got, with heavy use as well, then I'm happy.

I have very strict app management habits and whenever anything goes out of order it gets uninstalled forever.
The "worst" screenshot was taken at 17%, half the time on LTE and max brightness, the best was during a more relaxing day and ended at 3%
I'm going another full battery run today, 2h Sot and still at 88% battery so far, this time I uninstalled Nova and Sesame to see how OneUI Home stands against them.

There's negligable battery difference between FHD and WQHD+. But there is definitely a difference in visual quality. You should definitely use WQHD+.
As for those who are saying they get x hours SOT. You can't compare with others. It's different for everyone. It depends on a massive number of factors. How good a cell reception you get, brightness, what you have enabled (wifi, bluetooth, NFC etc), AOD, what apps are running, what apps you use, what you use the phone for during the day, was the phone used for long period or intermittent use.
It's silly to ry to compare or match others. Just be happy with your own use, otherwise you'll spend more time trying to get more SOT, than you will just actually using and enjoying the phone.

I guess that depends on the quality of your connection. If your reception is not very good at home your radio might be really busy getting a proper signal.
