Bluetooth tethering from phone? - Android Head-Units

Hey, I bough a new HIZPO head unit running android 7.1.2 (so the system says) for my GMC car.
So far so good, and everything seems to work fine, except for the internet connection.
I can tether my phone (iPhone 7) internet by wifi tethering, but every time I get in the car i need to worry about turning on the hotspot and connect the head unit.
Bluetooth tether are usually smarter, in my android phone, in the bluetooth config I can choose to get internet connection from the iPhone, and when the devices connect I get internet automatically.
Unfortunately, this option is not available on my head unit as it is on my nexus 5x.
Any idea how to enable it on the car stereo? Any app that might do the trick?
Thanks

Nothing?
Not possible?
Any other means?

AFAIK there are no units that will do bluetooth tethering. The bluetooth implementation on most of them is pretty hacked together and not very standard.
Your best bet would be a Tasker profile on your phone that automates the wifi hotspot when it's connected to the head units bluetooth. If you're trying to do it with an iphone I guess you'd need whatever the ios equivalent of Tasker is, if it exists.

There's this one, but its for Joying units, maybe it will work for you?

I read in another page that for intel units is working flawlessly.
The reason behind is that the manufacturers did not removed essential BT functions, just hided it, don't ask me why....
No one yet tested to the rk3188; but I gonna try it for sure and post results here.
Thanks!!!!!

For iPhone only if you are jailbroken, what I'm not because of the version of my cel.
Considering going back to Android because of this locked **** Apple does.
Either way, there might be a light here, let's try

If you do, there's a couple of threads in the Tasker area:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/u/tasker-tips-tricks/how-to-off-wifi-hotspot-bluetooth-t3621934
https://forum.xda-developers.com/u/...ect-hotspot-connect-to-car-bluetooth-t3594736
It may vary slightly depending on the phone/ROM, but it's relatively simple. :good:

Help with tethering

I have a new Joying head unit. I have read several people on here reference that the set up a task on their phone so when their bluetooth connects to the head unit it turns on tethering. Unfortunately they glossed over the how to part of that. Can someone give me some instructions on setting that task up on an android phone. Specifically a LG G4 running Marshmallow.
i have a Joying unit that I love, and I have plenty of data on my Verizon plan. I have a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge running Android 6.0.
Every app I have tried to automate the wifi hotspot on my S7 Edge has failed. I have tried several. I read somewhere that Android 6.0 changed the logic for turning on a wifi hotspot and that causes issues for these apps.

Thank you for answering my question. Reading your posts inspired me to get the Joying for my Jeep.
I do have one other thing I would like to do that Joying said the HU couldn't do, that is voice calling. It seems there should be a way to do that.

Oh sweet, I hope you are happy with your decision. I posted about my Jeep/Joying everywhere I could find a relevant place to post. When I was reading about these radios for over a year, i had such a hard time finding information relevant to me. So when I had something for me, I tried to post it everywhere I could find so the next person could have some details.
Voice calling is not important to me, but from my reading on here, I dont think it is possible. I think the on these units Android and the physical side dont' play nice. That's why the hardware controls cant change songs in apps, etc.
now that one guy on here made MTCDtools to make the hardware controls work with Spotify. so maybe someone can make the calling work
I do really like my head unit. It is lot better than the stock HU that came with my Jeep. I have seen a lot of complaining on here and Reddit, but I think because of everything it can do they forget what they bought and want something in there dash with all the functionality of a flagship smart phone. For less than $400, this HU is amazing.
I also would like to change the few frustrations I have with it, but I know what I have and what I paid.
The only reason I thought there might be a chance of voice calling is because I saw a video of someone with a Pumpkin HU that could voice call. He used Parrat bluetooth. I thought there might be a way to get it on a Joying unit. Like I said not a huge deal compared to everything this HU can do.
I've been trying to achieve the same thing with mine. Joying sent a RFID chip with mine and I tried to use it to toggle between WIFI and tethering. I tried several different programs, it would turn the WiFi off and start the tethering process but could never complete it. I think it must have something to do with the message that pops up "please wait while verifying." One of the apps I tried, Power Toggles, has a feature on their widget where a double tap will take you to the Hotspot and Tethering page in settings. That's the quickest way I've found to turn on the hotspot so far.
Mike is also the one who inspired me to get this for my Jeep as well, I think Joying should be sending him for a check for referrals!

Well this is pretty awesome. Joying should send me a check. I havent posted it yet, but on the Jeep forums and the Joying forum I'm going to post a very long post about how I got their Jeep unit to work with the Premium Alpine system.
my Samsung S7 has a quick toggle as well, I found that is the easiest way to get it on. And in the settings of that you can have it turn off after 10 minutes or so of not being connected. only problem is I forget to turn my wifi back on

Sony XAV-AX100 Bluetooth Issues

Just doesn't pair. Finds the device, I try pairing on my phone and it does it forever til it times out. On the other hand my friends phone connects instantly with no wait! Anyone else had issues with connecting to a headunit? Before that I had a Pioneer one with no issues but when I upgraded to a Sony one Bluetooth will not pair on the OnePlus 5.
Think I'm gunna get rid of this head unit and pay £60 more for a Kenwood one.

I just went halfords and swapped it for a kenwood one. Had to pay £50 more. I haven't got around to setting it up yet so will test later to see if bluetooth works.
I've noticed Bluetooth issues with my car's head unit. It is a stock unit from Subaru. It paired just fine but I have to manually connect every time... And sometimes I have to click connect multiple times before it actually connects.
No problems with other phones on that head unit, and also no issues with other BT devices.

My previous head unit by pioneer worked okay, paired instantly and automatically connected as soon as I turned the car on. Let's hope I got more luck with the Kenwood. Finish work in 40 mins so will test then.
Well the Kenwood works great and as it should. I didn't even have to setup Bluetooth android auto did all of that for me looks. Like it's Sony's fault rather than OP

I also can't connect to my car stereo. But my OP5 (OOS 4.5.6, rooted SuperSU) just won't see my MEX-XB100BT. My OP2 (CM14) had no issues seeing and connecting to it.
UPDATE: I managed to pair the phone via NFC. Worked like a charm from the first try.
I have a Pioneer unit (avic f960dab) and my OP5 connects absolutely fine.
Media browsing however does not work at all. Used to work with my iPhone but have never been able to get it working with Android.

For what it's worth, I ALWAYS had issues connecting Android devices to the OEM stereos in my 2011 STI and 2015 WRX. I've since switched to an Audi and those connectivity issues are gone (with both Google Pixel and Galaxy S8). The Subaru OEM stereo is known to be garbage. I highly recommend doing yourself a favor and upgrading it. It will improve the sound quality of your OEM speakers while also improving bluetooth connectivity. It's something I never did but in retrospect, I should have.

I've been considering upgrading since day one, but as long as my phone connected fine it didn't bother me too much. This might be a good enough excuse...
I got my 6t to pair with the radio by connecting the phone to the radio with the usb for Android Auto. Before connecting using USB I could not find the radio under available devices to pair with. After connecting to the radio the with the USB I was able to see the radio and my phone was trying to connect, kept giving an error 'wrong pin' at this point I just unplugged the USB and the the radio ask for permission to use the contacts in my phone which I granted. Radio is now paired and auto connects.

Turn head unit into android auto host device?

I just had a thought and is it possible to turn an android head unit into an android auto host device? I realise that there is the option for mirroring and remote touch control, so it should be trivial to have and automatic switch into android auto mode (that is, the head unit acts only as a screen with touch functionality while the whole thing runs on the phone that's plugged in) when plugging an android phone into one of our android head units, right? Is that even a thing? I figure demand would be extremely low for it (it's even redundant a bit), seeing as it's quite limiting in comparison to a full android head unit, but it is still a curiosity for me. Many factory android auto capable head units are running a custom version of android os anyway, so I imagine the possibility is there, right?

But wait, if I install this on my android head unit, it will just run android auto, not wait for a phone to be plugged in. That's what I mean.
What is it exactly you want from a functionality perspective. The point of the android units is that you have much of the flexibility of android with apps and such running on the head unit without the need for the phone. Many of the current units can do mirrorlink in some form with a phone.
You may be able to trigger an app to run when you connect a phone if that's your objective.
What unit do you have?

I have a hot audio (dasaita) px5 unit.
Basically, I'm just curious and want to add as much expandability as possible. For instance if I have another driver in the car who has his/her own music and nav favourites in their android phone, it would be cool to have them plug it into the unit, and have the option of android auto (instead of digging around in my custom setup on my head unit). Furthermore, since everything will be running off of their phone, they instantly have their contacts, emails, sms, etc. available to them on the head unit (moreover, if they use android auto on a regular basis in their own car, it would be a seamless transition).
Not saying it's useful on a daily basis like it would be on a stock (for instance Hyundai) head unit with AA support. I realise that modern head units have very limited functionality in the ways of navigation and apps, and that's expanded a little bit with android auto, and obviously expanded a whole lot if your head unit has a full android OS on it.
Anyway, I think I found an app that does just that:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=gb.xxy.hr
I'll give it a go tomorrow. Once again, it's not a feature I'll be using (probably ever), but it's just kind of neat to have.
Anyway, my end goal is to have a head unit that has an open android system AND Android Auto + Carplay support. The redundancy in that situation is obvious, but I still think it would be quite neat.
Is mirror link functional on your unit?
yep. so i've done a bit more digging and it looks like the stock android auto app has a developer settings mode, and you can enable it to run in server mode, like many android auto enabled head units do. will test this tomorrow.

Did you test it? I'm interested in running android auto on my head unit as well.
I'm interested to see how this plays out
I get only a black screen on my px5 unit but on my test setup it works wonderfully.
edit: I should note that this all worked without any real tinkering. I didn't have to enable developer mode on the phone, or tinker with any settings on the computer. The only thing you don't see is the default application dialogue, as I've told it to auto-open headunit reloaded when connecting the phone already.

I didn't have to configure anything, nope. It didn't want to work on my centre consoles USB port though, I had to use another port that was directly connected to the head unit. So if you're using a hub try without it. Other than that, launch the headunit reloaded app at least once

Joying Head Unit (4GB, PX5 Octa Core) - Bluetooth Tethering

Hi All,
Recently purchased and installed a Joying head unit (4GB, PX5 Octa Core) (link to product)
As this head unit runs android I am trying to tether the mobile data on my android mobile over to the head unit via the bluetooth tethering function. Problem is I dont think its working. Does anyone have any experience with this or know how to get it working?
Steps:
On the mobile, make sure its connected to mobile data
On mobile, turn on bluetooth tethering
Pair mobile and head unit via bluetooth
Still no internet access
Can you access data via hot spot? Make you mobile device a wifi hotspot and connect the headunit to your hotspot.

Yeah I tried this and it works fine. I just though it be better to use bluetooth tethering seeing as the phone is already hooked up to the head unit via bluetooth. Using the WiFi hot spot option just adds another process to the mix.
Because Joying remove a lot of the standard android setting I was thinking there might be a way to access the default android settings again to be able to play around with bluetooth properly. While writing this thread up however I did email Joying about the ability to bluetooth tether and their response was:
"Our head unit can not support Bluetooth tethering"
Hi, I am trying to achieve the same solution however I do not think it's possible. My understanding is that the bluetooth connectivity allowed by the hardware in the head units doesn't cater for the 'full stack' of bluetooth functions, so we're stuck with telephony and audio only with no data transfer.
I would *really* love to be corrected though! It would be great if it could be solved by software alone.
Failing that, could a bluetooth USB dongle work to provide full BT support?

I consider this a bug. It did work on the Sofia 3GR units on Android 6.0.1.
It (currently) does not work on the Android 8 PX5 FYT units (like the OP has as well). Can't say anything about the QD units.
Well that gives me some hope at least.
I did note at least 3 'Bluetooth' apps running on my device (that I've been playing with since my previous post).
Perhaps a custom mod may be the answer...
Sorry proto, I've had about five units and all the same. You're right and it sucks. I don't think it's a big as I've come across it many times and only in a few eBay postings did the seller actually specify it has a general bluetooth connection. Otherwise toy even have to buy their obd to get that to work

Ok thanks for the replies. Hopefully it will be fixed with a firmware update in the future or something.
Is there are any news about this Bluetooth tethering?
I am really interested because my WiFi is really really slow...
I saw that some Bluetooth function are missing, like the possibility to remove paired device or select Bluetooth tethering.
It’s highly unlikely Joying will fix the Bluetooth, they would need to produce a seperate rom with normal BT configured and u would not have access to the Joying BT app.
Currently Joying route all Bluetooth communication via a service called btlink, from there it goes to the joying bluetooth app.
Joying have fundamentally changed the way the Bluetooth is configured so it functions with only their software.
All these headunit manufactures do this to the BT so it functions with their software and they never offer a fix

Remember that it only worked with a HACK. Joying intentionally disables this functionality.
Bluetooth information
Init.sy.rc
Service blink /vendor/bin/blink
Init.connectivity.rc
Chmod 0666 /dev/tty (This should be tty00)
Now I have modified mine but I think the system/vendor/ect/Bluetooth/bt_vendor.conf is set to
- UartPort = /dev/tty00
Blink is interacting with /dev/tty
Android system is interacting with /dev/tty00 ?
Hopefully all the information is correct as I have modified my unit lots to try give back the Bluetooth to the system and I didn’t keep many notes.
But in short the the system is trying to access the Bluetooth on the wrong Uart port, where as the blink is attaching to the tty device, allowing the joying software to work.
This prevent the android system & apps interacting with the Bluetooth.
Also this is the test app I have been using to try to get it to allow permissions to turn BT on, but it get denied every time
Bluetooth Discovery : Bluetooth LE Scanner

i have the 10.1 american version.
if i remember correctly, bluetooth has an issue when your using it as a "media" access point
i think the bluetooth is set for A2DP... probably physically somehow.

Did you try to create a symlink like
Code:
ln -s /dev/tty /dev/tty00
And is it indeed tty00 or tty0?
Did you give the scanner root access?
Bumping this for a slightly odder issue. I'm trying to connect my Joying stereo to a Hondata KPro ECU, it sees the ECU but refuses to link to it in settings, rendering apps like Hondata or RealDash useless, so in turn I'm using a crappy $20 tablet until someone can show how to fix this BT issue.
Joying was no help other than to tell me to buy their OBDII adapter, which I did, but LONG story this is a 2008 Honda engine in a 91 MR2 that has no OBDII port. I've bought an OBDII port off eBay and tried using pinouts from the ECU to hack together an OBDII port but no luck.
Having it via Bluetooth would be easier, it sees the KPro, so there must be a way.

Auto connect the head unit to Iphone hotspot / Wifi

To use wifi on my android head unit, I always have to manually open my Iphone settings to make it accessible for the head unit. As I understand the apple IOS will not allow auto connection unless you have an iCloud account and family sharing. - With other words IOS will allow only other IOS devices. Any workaround to get the Iphone autoconnect when the Head unit is turned on?
Just to mention the bluetooth connection is up and running when I turn on the head unit.
Have you tried the automation options on the iPhone? I see there are a lot of options there to activate different things in different situations. I’m sure I saw something after you connect to a car Bluetooth.

Well I tried to figure out by using Apples own script editor app but with no success as I could not find any entry to the hot spot config.

I'm not an apple user so I can't confirm, but I was told that apple will not allow auto wifi hotspots for non apple equipment. There are also no apps that will assist in auto connection because apple will not allow any app to control system settings.
If you want auto connection you will either have to use an android phone or just get the 4g dongle so you don't need a phone at all.
