out of the box will not pair - Nexus Player Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just got my nexus player and I am trying to pair the remote but no matter what I do it will not pair. I have tried rebooting it and taking the batteries out of the remote and still no go. I saw a few threads here and no solutions. Can anyone help?

Did you try pushing the button on the bottom of the player? and you held the two buttons to try to pair it right? i don't remember if you can use it initially but you can also download the remote app on your phone...

I just got it paired. I had to pair a mini bluetooth KB first and go through the initial set up. I had been messing around and decided to try the remote one more time and it worked. Time to unlock it, root it and hopefully AOSP 7.1

[Q] Bluetooth on Nexus 4 woes

Trying to connect the N4 to a car Bluetooth audio (2012 model car, relatively new, only 9 months old).
(1) I had a very hard time getting the two paired: lots of "connection failed" attempts until they finally connected.
(2) The phone does not send artist/track info which is surprising as I have an older LG phone running Android 2.3.4 and that sends all the info.
(3) Without any music being streamed to the car audio, if I make a phone call via the car bluetooth, when the call ends the music player on the N4 starts automatically. This is very annoying, not sure if it's a problem with the car implementation sending a "play" command at the end of the call or the N4 doing something weird. I tend to blame the N4 as two other phones, an iPhone and the older LG mentioned above do not do this.
(4) The car has a play/pause toggle that it can send to the bluetooth player. Pause works, the player on the N4 pauses, but then play doesn't work, I have to hit play on the device.
(5) After I use bluetooth on the N4, I find that sometimes the widget toggle can no longer turn bluetooth on/off until I reboot the phone.
(6) After I use bluetooth on the N4, the phone sometimes randomly reboots. Not sure if it's really related or just a coincidence. Given (5) above I suspect something is going on.
Anyone else having such a hard time with the bluetooth part? Potential hardware issue or simply buggy software that we can hope to get addressed at some point?
I have experienced the issue with track information not being sent. Also random changes in volume during playback. Seems there's still some work that needs to be done in 4.2 regarding blue tooth.

Is this an issue that can be addressed by flashing a custom ROM or perhaps using a different music player than stock or is there more to it, deep down in the bluetooth drivers and it would need a fix from Google in the form of new drivers?
Yeah I have had a few issues too. My track/artist/album names do not send where my S2 sends them. Also the headunit I have has buttons for shuffle and repeat and these do not show up at all (I assume because it detects they aren't supported). I haven't taken a call yet or tried turning BT off after streaming but I'll give it a shot and see.. My nexus 4 also randomly shuts down for no apparent reason sometimes (rarely atm). I think it's just 4.2.1 problems - I doubt a different music app will fix it (I tried one), custom ROM may work though..
My N4 is paired with an Alpine 135BT and it's worked very well so far. I initially had some trouble connecting but once they were paired I didn't have any additional connection issues. The N4 does automatically play as soon as it connects to the unit. I've got BeyondPod and Spotify installed and for whatever reason it always defaults to BeyondPod instead of Spotify even if I had BeyondPod closed and Spotify open. Not a big deal to me though.
Are you running the stock rom or a custom rom? I had my EVO LTE hooked up to the same head unit. It worked perfectly on the stock software but gave me all kinds of trouble when I started using custom roms. Otherwise, it could just be that the N4 and your particular head unit just don't play nicely together.

(1) Haven't had any connection issues so far on my vehicle or my wife's.
(2) Currently stock Android uses AVCR v1.0 which only only allows you to control via Bluetooth (play, pause, etc) but not send track info. Other manufactures that customize Android (LG, Samsung, etc) will sometimes use v1.3 that supports track info. That's why your old phone did it.
You could install a custom Rom that has v1.3. I think cm10 does.
(3) Again, not happening on my two cars. The only time the music starts after a call is if it was playing before the call. I'm wondering if you have another music/podcast player that is taking over Bluetooth controls and causing problems. I use the stock player and Player Pro. If I don't disable the headset/BT controls in Player Pro I have control issues.
(4) I have the same issue. To get around this I cheat and push the track advance button on the radio to play the next track.
(5) This is an issue I've had on all of my previous android phones. I haven't noticed I my N4 because I never toggle off Bluetooth anymore.
(6) Not having this problem but maybe try solution in (3).

got the sony mw600 for bluetooth audio.. no id tags on display.. on every musicplayer (play music, poweramp, cm musicplayer..) the same.
dont know why, but today even the start/stop, forward and prev. buttons didnt work! the only thing i can use is volume control..
anyone an idea?
Any luck with this?
I want to buy one but couldn't find it in Sri Lanka so planning to order one via ebay & need to check if it works. Running cyanogen mod 10, heard that the bluetooth stack was updated on CM which supports most of the features since stock rom only has older stack version which can have issues!

I also have the track name issue. This is a massive let down. I like to just get in my car and flip through tracks with my phone in my pocket. My iPhone did this, my s3 did this. Why not the nexus 4? Come on Google. Sort it out

my impression is that almost nothing involving Bluetooth functions as it should currently on the N4. I can't even get a mouse to work. what a shambles! it's not as if BT is some new technology. this all better get sorted out in 4.2.2.
If I'm not mistaken Google moved to a new Broadcom b/t stack. Yeah, good move! And I agree, b/t has been around for like what at least 10 years now? You'd think that getting track info should be a given by now. I have a crappy old LG phone running Gingerbread and it has no issues at all.
Bluetooth
When I got the N4, I connected my helmet headset to it and everything seems to work fine. My headset supports ad2p music and phone. Both connected and both worked, including play controls. Not sure about the audio quality, I didn't test it long enough After I flashed Jellybro (CM 10.1 Kang) Music connects, but phone goes on a connect/disconnect loop. Audio needs further testing, can't tell if the left side is off because of the bluetooth or not. Controls work most of the time, every now and again playback will decide to pause itself and sometimes the play command doesn't work. Haven't had a chance to flash stock CM 10.1 nightly yet either.
Play/Pause Works Inconsistently
Has anyone had this issue?
I am on stock 4.2.2, I connect with my car stereo no problems. I use to be able to just hit play/pause on my car stereo and it would just play music from Google Music. Now, sometimes when I hit the play/pause button on my stereo, it won't play. I have to manually hit play from my phone. After initially doing that, then I can hit play/pause and the control is there. I haven't had the problem since I got my phone on Nov 14th, this issue just started to happen. I notice this after installing Light Manager, but I have uninstalled it and still the issue is there. It is inconsistent, but the issue is more often than not.
Thanks in advance for your input.
Just reiterating, stock Android does not show artist/track info, it is not in the protocol, but you can skip tracks or go back to previous tracks. If it is important to you, you should root and get a custom ROM, not sure which ones for N4 has it though, been too happy with stock to root.
About time, Google:

Is anyone else having problems wit Bluetooth audio streaming in car? My music sounds like it's speed up a tiny bit. Kinda like chipmunks voices. Is this a ROM issue?

[Q] Motoactv pairing issues with LG Tone+ HBS-730: fixable?

Having an issue pairing my Motoactv to the new bluetooth headset I just bought, the LG Tone+ (HBS-730). Motoactv won't even see it. Headset connects just fine to the phone, and Motoactv connects to phone and old headset (Motorola S10-HD) without a hitch. Tried removing all existing bluetooth connections on all devices. On Motorola's advice, factory reset Motoactv. Nothing seems to be helping.
Does anyone know if this is something that a dev could fix? If it's a simple "no, there's no way modding will fix that", please let me know, so I can return this headset. I really appreciate any help. I bought this thing because it can connect to 2 devices, where the S10 could not. Doesn't do much good if it won't pair, does it?
I couldn't find a better place to put this, since Motoactv doesn't have its own section. Hope that was OK.

If the MotoACTV does not see the headset while the headset is in pairing mode then it won't work. It will not pair with something it cannot see. Not sure why it wouldn't see it though. The MotoACTV uses bluetooth 4.0 so the LG's bluetooth 2.0 should be seen with ease. My suggestion would be to remove all bluetooth devices from MotoACTV. Reboot the MotoACTV and try again. Also make sure that ALL other devices have their bluetooth turned as so they don't see the LG and try to pair with it. If that doesn't work then odds are it won't work at all.
I think this new version of the headset is Bluetooth 3.0. It's the Tone+ 730, not the Tone 700 original (which, apparently, has no issues pairing with the Motoactv).

MotoACTV is still 4.0 so it should be compatible with 3.0, good luck
pairing
Ill let you know i own one of these headsets and should be recieving my motoactv in the mail soon.
Any ideas on the issue guys? I have a Motorola h500 and an LG-HBM 235 and neither will pair with the motoactv. It drives me absolutely nuts that the Motorola headset doesn't even work with the motorola motoactv. I mean really, WTF man? I don't want a big stereo headset. SMH. If i could finally get bluetooth audio, this thing would be great. In fact, they need to make a new model with a speaker and mic then it would be the greatest!
Figured it out. Your bluetooth earpiece/headset must be A2DP compatible.

I have these headphones as well but have always had them paired to the phone. I just tried to pair them with my actv just to see if my results were any different but unfortunately, I have the same issue.
It may be possible to pair them through a third party app but I haven't tried.

Any suggestions for 3rd party apps that would do this? I'm willing to try.
Also, does anyone think that modding the ACTV with some of the work the guys here on XDA have done will have any effect? I'm reading threads dealing with similar problems with other devices (e.g. car kits) and some are saying its a bluetooth driver issue. Maybe a custom UI will include different bluetooth drivers?
I know it's annoying to hear people ask for free work, but if any of you ACTV programmers/modders think you can tackle this issue, we'd all really appreciate it. It's incredibly frustrating when you buy 2 things that should work together just fine, but for some unknown reason, just don't.
Thanks!

Perhaps something like this could work? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.IG.BluetoothManager
Alternatively, if your device is rooted there are .conf files under /system/etc/bluetooth/ that could potentially be modified to get this working. For example, audio.conf could be modified to remove "Disable=Headset" as well as enable HFP. These changes could possibly resolve the issue but I haven't tried tinkering with them.

Ok, so I decided to tinker a little and the app I mentioned did not work.....neither did some of the modifications I made to to the audio.conf file.
However, I did download this app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=es.qrr.android.btoolkit
In the app settings, I enabled experimental mode and was able to find the HBS-730 headset and pair with it. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to go any further than that. Even though it is paired, music wasn't routing to it (granted I didn't use the stock music player -- that may have worked).
I believe the actv is treating the HBS-730 like a phone, tablet, or comp rather than just a headset which is why it is not interacting directly with it. There may be another app with root privileges (like the original app I suggested) that could possibly route the audio correctly but I haven't had the time to tinker with it and don't typically need audio output from my actv anyway.
Hope this somewhat helps.

I had similiar problems pairing my motoactv with a pair of UE 9000's. It could see the device, but would not pair through the stock menus. Tried downloading some third party bluetooth managers and was unable to get any audio. I believe it has something to do with Apt-X codec for bluetooth not being implemented in 2.3 gingberbread on the motoactv

No worries .
Yes, you'll need to download the app to the ACTV. It will require rooting of the device and installing a custom ROM is the best way to get everything necessary for the market to work so that you can install these apps.
There is a step-by-step tutorial in the MOTOActv rooting thread in this forum.
Any further updates?
Just curious to see how this solution worked out. I am having the same problem and am definitely a NOOB. Attempting to download an app to my Motoactv seem a bit daunting to me...

[Q] Bluetooth Pairing Every Time I Use it

Not sure if anyone else has this issue, but every time I turn on my bluetooth headset, I need to pair it. Have never had this issue with any of my other phones. Any ideas? Help paring will not connect to audio just phone works.
My LG G2 will not stream music to my car. The phone Bluetooth works just fine. When I move to connect to the media streaming the car say no Bluetooth audio device connected. The car is a Mercedes E 350 2010. I had a nexus 4 also an LG phone and I had no issues streaming. I am aware of the menu that you can get to check the boxes for phone audio and media audio. I have tried every option I can think of with no luck yet. So far I unpaired the device, I factory rest the phone all to no avail. When I attempt to pair just the Bluetooth media to the car the car asks me to up in the pass code and I do then the phone asks for the same code. This lets me know that the 2 devices are communicating. Once I have entered the pass code the car says connecting….. then is says connection to Bluetooth media device unsuccessful called LG T-Mobile and Mercedes and not one of them has any idea that was helpful or I had not tried yet. . I am rooted but running stock. Have 2 headsets that both work fine streaming music. Any ideas would help.

Marshmallow update - cant pair bluetooth devices using PIN

I'm trying to get a sense of whether the following bug is only affecting me or other users as well. I did a full factory image flash of 6.0 and attempted to pair a bluetooth keyboard and bluetooth audio receiver. For the keyboard, it forces the other device to generate a pin that is then typed on the keyboard. I eventually got this to work, but the NP kept taking a while just to generate a code, and would frequently time out before I could send the code. Once paired though, it worked fine.
The main issue is the audio receiver, which has the simple 0000 pair code. When I type it in on the player (or any other number for that matter), there's no way to click next or proceed to have it pair. It just sits there until it times out.
Anyone else deal with this and/or find a workaround?
I just picked up 2 nexus players on sale at walmart and have been setting them up. I updated the first one to marshmallow before doing any setup and noticed something similar. I could not pair a microsoft bluetooth mouse i have, it would discover it and attempt to pair, first is says pairing, then connecting then a few seconds later says "could not pair". It doesn't ever prompt for a pin and I've tried several times. I was able to pair a ZAGG folio case keyboard I use with my nexus 10 tablet, it prompted me to type in a pin and that paired just fine. Interestingly, last night I picked up a Logitech K830 keyboard (really nice btw) that has a touchpad built in and it won't pair, same behavior as the mouse except it does prompt me to type in a pin on the keyboard, which it seems to accept but then won't finish pairing. Luckily it also has a wireless dongle I just connected via USB and that work fine.
On the second player I let it do OTA updates to 5.1.1 and the keyboard pairs up just fine. I'm going to see if after doing the update to marshmallow (and not wiping my data) if the pairing will still be there and work.
My thought was maybe marshmallow has trouble pairing with mice, or devices that have mice integrated. But it sucks your reciever won't work either. It would seem there's a bug.

New update out, can anyone confirm this is fixed? I rather not format and setup again if it isn't fixed
Fixed problem pairing Bluetooth mouse on nexus player Android 6.0.
I found a fix. First of all I don't see an update on my nexus player as of today. But I could not pair the Microsoft mouse no matter what I try. So I replaced the batteries in the mouse with fresh and it paired and connected right away. I guess if the batteries are weak it can't pair.

Problem Solved, updated firmware on the Bluetooth controller
Am also on Marshmallow, bootloader unlocked on my Nexus Player - love the device btw - I have the Asus gamepad, a HP K4000 bluetooth keyboard and the nexus remote control all paired and functional. Tried to add a Logitech m557 bluetooth mouse and it starts to pair and then says it cannot connect. I have another bluetooth mouse and I get the same result with trying to pair it as well. Bit of a headscratcher - Any advice would be appreciated

Has anyone been able to get a Dualshock 4 to pair with the Nexus 6p? Unlike my other android devices it seems to get stuck on "pairing"
I thought nexus devices always had trouble pairing with controllers due to the BT stack used? Or is that old info? I have a mogo pro I haven't even paired in over a year.

I tried 4 times in a row and it finally paired. The issue is that once paired it begins to Lag after about 30 seconds. The trick is to download "bluetooth auto connect" from the play store and set in the advance settings retry after (sec) to 1 and Continuous connect (sec) to 1 then press connect now. After this it works ok. Lag is gone but every 30 seconds or so you will get a lag spike as it reconnects.
Try it and let me know if you have any better luck.
