I have a new (3 day) that updated to b25. Was and is totally stock. Not happy.
Mar was way better on battery and performance. I have downloaded and renamed
b15 factory ota and placed in the sdcard. System update reports a valid update but before I
commit to doing this I wanted to verify with the community that it is safe to do.
After I do this update I am wondering if I can find a factory ota of mar if I can do the same thing again.
Thanks in advance

It's really simple actually: if you install B15 your data will be wiped, after that just skip everything and update to B29 (is B29 the latest? I have a G, dunno) and then use it. What you describe is not the actual performance that it should have, it's your specific case obviously.
I know what you want to do - if you want to remain TOTALLY STOCK I think you are out of options as I don't know anywhere that you can still download the stock ZTE B29 marshmallow. If you are willing to unlock your bootloader and install TWRP then somewhere in here DrakenFX has a B29 rollback that works great - it just won't work with stock recovery

All I really want is to remain stock but rooted and with TWRP for recovery for Nandroid backups. The B25 will not let me unlock the bootloader with Fastboot and when running MiFlash the phone is visible but getting "Hello packet error" I have read another method with fastboot but have not tried it yet (below). Somewhere I read that B25 was the problem and you had to downgrade and the MiFlash method was recommended.
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot devices
fastboot oem unlock
fastboot reboot
I did everything but the first entry.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Go ahead with your rollback to B15 - that will let you unlock and install TWRP. Once you have TWRP go to this thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/development/rom-guide-updates-to-stock-files-via-t3469484 and in post #2 you will find A2017UV1.0.0B29_RollBackModded.zip. Flash that, then flash TWRP again (you have to flash TWRP again ONLY if you want to keep TWRP as this flash file will automatically reinstall stock recovery). Also note on B29 I had to use SuperSU 2.65 (not the current one) for root.

By the system update.zip method?
Thanks
Also I would be happy to stay at b15 with TWRP and root.

Wait - you wanted to stay stock? You didn't actually have to unlock if you wanted to. Just by using the update.zip method with some Marshmallow zip you could get to MM, and then you can update to N and you surely won't get the same problems that you've been having...
For example my G is on 7.1.1 and I get 6h+ of battery (right now, 3h36m with 41% left) so your problem is just that your installation was bad. If you unlocked you might as well just do the process that the guy above described though.

OK on the A2017U units you need the official marshmallow B29 package to roll back, and that only works with stock recovery on a clean B15 N install. The Rollback package I told you to use earlier will roll you back to B29 marshmallow NO MATTER WHAT YOU ARE USING (I have used this a lot, and OBVIOUSLY there are differences between the the A2017U version in North America and the A2017G version in Europe). If you want stock and rooted, I personally recommend B29 marshmallow over B15 Nougat, but either way go for it (I think the marshmallow had a much better radio than any of the Nougat packages). If you are interested in TWRP and root, I found B29 marshmallow much easier for both, and the marshmallow version of android also gives you Xposed, but back to your first post, you mentioned wanting marshmallow, and this is the best way to get it.
Step by Step method
1. Roll back to B15. Use the update.zip method. It will factory reset your device so backup everything you can't lose
2. Use MiFlash to unlock and install TWRP - check that thread on XDA for instructions.
3. (If desired) In TWRP, install the B29 marshmallow rollback. Do not reboot into system afterwards.
4. (If step 3 is done) In TWRP, flash TWRP. The marshmallow rollback will overwrite recovery with stock recovery
If you do this you will have exactly what you wanted in your original post. I can personally tell you this works, as I have tried every custom rom on here and always wind up back at B29 marshmallow when all is said and done. It has never failed me, and it will never fail you either.

Can someone walk me through how to Unlock the bootloader, root, and install TWRP? I'm so confused. I tried to do the newbie way, even though I'm not a newbie, and I lost my B29 Stock Recovery and can't find the download for it.
Sent from my ZTE A2017U using Tapatalk
I haven't done it yet but I've done a lot of reading and this seems to me the best guide.
Head over to this link which is the TWRP thread. https://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/development/recovery-official-twrp-zte-axon-7-t3515715
Once you're in there go to bootloader unlock section. Download all the necessary files and on the bottom of the guide there will be instructions link which will take you here https://build.nethunter.com/misc/axon7/INSTRUCTIONS.txt
Follow that and that should do it.
When i get a weekend off ill be using this method to get the Lineage OS 14.1 on my device.
Search, Read & Follow --CAREFULLY--.
It's been a while, but this worked great for me, starting from B29.
Goodluck
Let me tell you, this is the guide that should be pinned. It gives very easy/clear instructions on what you need to do to root/flash recovery and even going back to stock. Very well written and I wish I had seen it sooner. I was going to write a clear guide on this subject only to find.. it already existed.. --nolimit78
@amphi66 I am on 2017U B29 and want to unlock bootloader, install TWRP and root. I also read newbies thread. I am confused about one thing. which TWRP recovery image should I use? a2017u B27 http://d-h.st/kRgq or TWRP recovery 3.0.2-2 : http://d-h.st/dgWW ? There is no file for B29 on newbie's thread and in FAQ, the OP said B27 should work for B29. Which one did you use?
After reading, I also see some people said tenfar's tool is too dangerous and it may brick your phone. Some people also claimed the back up of TWRP recovery 3.0.2 provided on that thread has some bugs may cause you to loose your IMEI number when you do recovering. Do you have any issues? Thanks!

This was back last Nov, but I followed the guide, using the recommended files (was on B29, but used the B27 OK, then reflashed B29 at the end).
The warning involved backing up and then restoring the EFS partiton with tenfar's tool. DON'T! If you stick with system, data, and boot partitions you should be fine.
Good luck. You may want to check with @nolimit78. He has done this much more recently.
Yes, I agree with you @amphi66 that there is a lot of different places to get information about how to root/flash recovery for A2017U B29. Here's what I've done with two different A7's and both have worked each time.
1. Boot the phone to EDL Mode (Both Vol+Power on boot it'll quick flash the red notification light and then act like it's off.. it's not)
2. Use tenfar's tool to flash the recovery. (I renamed the updated TWRP img and named it "recovery". This used tenfar's tool to flash the updated TWRP on your device.
3. Once in TWRP, run the command (reboot disemmcwp and relaunch TWRP) and flash the package to use modifiable bootloader from B20.
4. Once that flashes now you can send the command in Fastboot "fastboot oem unlock" which will unlock the bootloader that doesn't trip anything notifying ZTE
5. At this point you can flash a B29 rom and have a grand ol' time. However, I would recommend using the LineageOS Rom that's available. Trumps everything else out there IMHO.
6. To do that You'll need to flash the Nougat Bootstacks for that rom to boot prior to flashing the Rom itself. I would recommend flashing the nougat bootstacks, reboot to TWRP, flash LineageOS, reboot.
Like I said, I've done with this with two different devices (Thanks ZTE) and both worked out just fine. I did this method with a device with b27 and b29, both ended up updated and flashed with CM/LineageOS with ZERO issues. This post here should also be pinned as the one true guide (THE KING OF THE NORTH) for unlocking/rooting a stock Axon 7. I spent probably about 4-5 hours working, trying to figure out how to get my device unlocked/rooted. However.. at the very end I wrote out instructions trying to help those who would come after me.. I searched the threads to make sure there wasn't already a thread out there.. and then.. it turns out there was.

If you download the 93-14 Nougat firmware, that's the latest version. Nougat OTAs currently only exist for the 93-11 firmware.

Yes, your bootloader status won't matter - as long as that's all you've done. As I understand it, the update via stock recovery only cares if the rest of your phone has been modified - if you've still got a stock bootloader, stock recovery and stock kernel (from MM, provided it's up to date), it should work and you should be eligible for future OTAs.
The only hurdle I could see happening is that the build of Marshmallow expected by the OTA and your phone's current OS build do not match, in which case it won't install. Thus, you may have to consult one of the fastboot Nougat 93-11 or 93-14 threads to install, which you'll have to do if your system is modified past the bootloader.
Here are a couple for your perusal:

I see you've received a response in the other thread regarding if XT1644 will accept the update; given you've flashed TWRP, if you wish to be very safe, I would suggest re-installing your Marshmallow ROM so you have a stock install before proceeding to Nougat. There's nothing stopping you from directly flashing Nougat, and the fastboot method for either Nougat build may correctly overwrite the relevant files, the only way is to try the procedure. Don't use the TWRP backup images of Nougat - they don't contain updates to your baseband modem and other core parts of your device - they are only meant to be used once your entire phone is updated to Nougat.
If you wish to restore back to stock MM before flashing Nougat, here's links to stock firmware for XT1644: https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g4-plus/how-to/xt1644-firmware-t3454980
But either way, read all the instructions first, ensure you've got all the firmware and tools you need installed/downloaded, your phone has at least 50 % battery and plenty of time, and you should be okay.
Hello all.
Im a little bit confused about the bootloaders and their marriage with their standard ROMS.
I am in MM B13 in a 2017 unlocked using bkores toolkit and would like to check Nougat ROMS.
What happens if, from this MM unlocked state I flash an official Nougat for 2017? Is safe? Could I eventually flash a TWR to return to my "original and safe" state? Could I flash back an "official" MM B13 for example?
I am guessing that maintaining the phone in the unclocked area is safer than recover the lock. Is this true?
There is a "Universal bootloader" for Nougat ROMS. How "Universal" is this bootloader? Does this bootloader runs in MM?.
If I apply a SD "complete" update (being MM B13 or Nougat), do I relock the phone's bootloader?
If I upgrade fro MM to N, do I lost the possibility of flashing a custom recovery? (TWRP). This is a non go for me, as you cannot go back...
Hope you can answer these questions

Forget about the bootloader thing for now - it should be universal for MM and N. Not gonna relock itself.
-If you want to go back from a custom ROM (you'd have the A2017X_Universal_Bootloader, the ROM and the modem that goes with your device, plus a version of TWRP installed) what you would do, at least in A2017Gs and Us, is to flash a stock recovery zip to get the stock recovery. After that you reboot to the recovery, and you'll get to MiFavor's recovery. from there you would flash an official zip and every partition would be overwritten with what's on the zip. I suspect that ZTE packs every update with everything in it so that you can roll back, say, from Nougat to Marshmallow officialy, without messing everything up.
OR you can use MiFlash to reflash everything with a computer. Just download the full EDL file from 4PDA and flash, you'll get full stock (but still unlocked BL anyways)
So yeah, you CAN get back to full stock anytime.
-Don't just try to relock the bootloader. AFAIK if you relock it and you have root or TWRP or somesuch you can brick your device. I'd advise against trying to do that, but if you must, look at a guide or two at least.
-Yeah, pretty universal. I wonder why you'd want a custom MM ROM though. if you want to go back to stock MM it will get replaced by another one anyways.
-Already addressed, no
-I don't know the exact case with A2017 phones, but you said you cannot go back? You can. If you're on official N and want to roll back all you have to do is put an official MM zip on your SD or internal storage and go to Updates.
That being said, you still can use axon7tool on Nougat if it supports A2017 phones, which it should. You use EDL mode to flash the recovery. it is what I always do on my A2017G.

So...
i) Bootloader unlocked is safer than locked and problems can arise if i try to relock.
ii) I can flash from SD every official thing published by ZTE if I flash previously ZTE recovery. (bootloader still unlocked). From that startpoint, I could reflash TWRP using fastboot or EDL. Once in TWRP, every ROM is flashable if partition compatible...
iii) I can stay with my unlocked bootloader with every MM or N. Important things are the modem and other stuff. N is not much different from MM and I like Xposed....
Big, big THANK YOU!!!!

Thank you again, my annonimous friend.
Trying to flash the ota that brings me from B27 to B29 (Android 6.0, M) so I restored my system image and the boot partition. I have not touched any other partitions since I unlocked my bootloader using this guide: https://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/development/axon7tool-flash-backup-boot-recovery-t3514254 and then this guide https://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/how-to/guide-how-to-unlock-bootloader-stay-t3461165
I flashed the correct stock recovery for B27 (removing twrp) and tried to upgrade to B29 via the settings menu once the phone booted up into Android. The recovery log spits out an error message along the lines of:
"contents of partition ... aboot didn't match EMMC ... doesn't have any of expected SHA1 sums. Script aborted: partition aboot has unexpected contents"
"Failed to stat /cache/saved.file: no such file or directory"
"failed to load cache file"
"script aborted"
Any idea what I'm doing wrong or anything else I need to fix beforehand?
Isn't B29 Nougat?

I still think ZTE should've used M29, and N29, then O01... Much more understandable than this crap
Try using MiFlash. The good thing about it is that you can use it even if you have half of the phone... Just put it on EDL, and use the corresponding FULL EDL package (DO NOT use the A2017 or A2017G's!!}

Nothing locks the bootloader but the command (oem lock). But don't use it unless your device is totally, COMPLETELY stock (stock recovery, stock system, stock BL).
How did you get on B27 in the first place? If you used a TWRP image or flashable zip to get there the OTA won't work (at least it never did for me).

https://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/development/rom-guide-updates-to-stock-files-via-t3469484 post #2 has a b29 rollback file there. Flash it in TWRP, then flash TWRP again.
I downgraded from custom Nougat to stock Marshmallow as I discovered that the incall sound (hearing the caller from the ear speaker) is louder and clearer, so of course I lost TWRP recovery and root in the process which is normal. However, I now can't re-install TWRP as a .img file since although I can boot into Android Recovery I can't go into Fastboot mode (phone just re-starts every time) so of course it's no go whether I try Axon Toolkit or ADB via computer. I also tried the EDL route but same thing.
I have all the required ZTE and Qualcom drivers installed. My phone's model is the 2017G and the bootloader is still unlocked.
Only thing I can try is installing TWRP as a zip file through Android Recovery or directly from 'system update' via the phone's menu. Problem is I can't find a zip version of TWRP for the Axon 7
Any help/suggestions most grateful.

Down a ways there is a "TWRP flashable bootstack/stock system images" section. I think if you can flash those (maybe with miflash?) You should then have fastboot available to flash twrp again.
When you unlocked surely you learned how to use the tools to flash twrp without fastboot.
You can use miflash, the toolkit, tenfar's tool or tenear's tool.
There's a million and one guides on how to to this plus the actual tool threads.
Even the twrp thread has a guide.

I took a look. Not sure which version I should download. Am on B10 and that section only has bootstack versions up to B9. Does it matter which one I choose or should I get the closest which is B9. Also, should I install the stock system that goes with the bootstack version or just the bootstack.
Thanks for the link.

Okay so since I was not paying that much attention (sorry) I just realized that those are bootstacks and stock systems that you can flash in TWRP. My bad. But I have been looking around and on that thread I just had you go to he mentions another thread with step by steps that may help you! Here it is. Good luck!

Ignore the fastboot part. Just reinstall twrp with axon7tool, then install raystef66's TWRP flashable B09 bootstack and stocksystem zips (plus magisk if you won't relock), then follow his guide on how to get rid of the 5 seconds screen to get fastboot and, well, get rid of the 5 seconds screen
p.s. I basically just found out that I said the exact same thing on that crappy Q&A thread...

The link you provided is titled 'Get TWRP and root after updating to Nougat'. As am on Marshmallow I'll have to first update to Nougat? . So do I go ahead and flash stock Nougat from ZTE's page before following the instructions on that page? Sorry for my confusion.
**Update** I followed instructions of link you provided to install TWRP but I came to a brick wall every time. Short story is no matter what I tried I cannot install anything with either ADB, Miflash or Axon Toolkit. The big problem here is the Fastboot issue which otherwise would make things so much easier. Only thing left for me to do is just to upgrade stock firmwares via the phone's update option and remain bootloader unlocked. The Axon 7 is still a great phone, it's just too much hustle getting things done so I'll just have to sell it. Samsung and HTC phones are much easier to work with when it comes to rooting/installing custom ROMs.
***Update 2*** Success!! I managed to install fastboot/bootloader mode by following the section 'Get Fastboot' from that same link you provided so now I have latest TWRP installed and the 5 second notice has also disappeared. Am back in the running now. Many thanks for your help

You could have bricked your device. I specifically told you not to follow that part. Also what has adb, axon7toolkit and miflash got to do with that guide? You have to use axon7tool just like a) it says there and b) i told you on the q&a thread

Yes you did warn me about the fastboot part but I was stuck as nothing else worked. By using the Fastboot instructions I managed to install TWRP and root the phone. I used Miflash to install the fastboot package which was successful. Now I can boot to Fastboot and bootloader via TWRP. Remember am on Marshmallow so I guess that helped not to brick the phone? I don't know but it worked.

Well again, if you want to be on Nougat, download raystef66's flashable B09 bootstack and stocksystem, flash them on TWRP with Magisk 15.2, and follow his guide on how to get rid of the 5 seconds screen (all in twrp, don't get out of it).
Just do all of that or you'll lose fastboot. Also that zip that you got from that ancient guide doesn't work on anything else than Marshmallow

Thanks for the advice. If I keep the phone I'll wait for a stable Oreo update. Nougat didn't impress me much.
