A coworker of mine installed the OTA update Verizon was pushing down, after rebooting the phone was stuck at the Samsung logo.
We can get the phone into download mode, but recovery errors and none of the buttons respond. (Similar to this thread)
If need be I can take a screenshot or type out the error text he receives trying to go into recovery (stock)
A little more info i can give as is: his phone is stock rom, but I do believe he has it rooted.
I have flashed roms onto my phone (Captivate) so I am familiar with working with Odin, but the problem is that he has data on the phone he needs to recover.
ADB does not recognize the phone, but his computer does seem to detect it.
Does anyone have any advice on getting something to recognize the phone so we can pull data, or is there a rom/setting that would leave his data as is?
If you odin a rom or even flash a rom it doesnt touch any of the data on the SDcard. he will loose call history and sms history. Pictures and things will be left on the sdcard untouched.
This is the most complete and up to date guide for the fassy:

Thanks for the heads up.
Just to be clear we are talking about the internal SD card right? Not the removable one.
He is apparently mostly concerned with losing his app data. As long as that will be safe I can have him up and running in a matter of minutes, especially with your link.
NO app data will be gone as well
What rom did he have or was it stock?
when i said the sd card i was referring to the removable one.
I figured that was the case
He is running the stock Froyo rom.
Would it be possible to use Odin (or some other tool) to push CWM onto the phone and maybe get it to mount from there?
He did say Odin recognizes a device when it's plugged in.
You may be past the point of no return. Since the phone is boot-looping and not actually booting up there may be no way to root the phone to flash CWM.
Odin is unfortunately a one-way street. Its designed to flash data ON to the phone, Not pull data off.
the phone does not have to be rooted to odin cwm....that being said, op try odining cwm2.5.1.x red and three finger into recovery, wipe cache & dalvik, then go to my guide section 1, use ccampos powerwashed ed05 froyo. That rom is close enough to what stock froyo is, so it might work! Or you can try geewiz froyo also, but one of those might get the phone back up and running without completely wiping everything.
just fyi once you odin a full rom all app data is gone. I have never attempted to pull app data from the mounting of the internal memory using cwm.

Thats why I suggested to try and flash a close to stock froyo rom in cwm without wiping data. odin will do a full wipe, so thats his only option that I am aware of.
Could he odin a recovery, make a back up, flash a new close to stock rom, advanced restore data? It would probable have alot of issues but may give him the opportunity to make a backup.

my co-worker had something similar happen and this is what I had him do. It didn't fair too well but it was worth a shot.
Ended up using odin to push a stock verizon rom and started over. Then I MADE him put cwm on his device and make a backup immediately incase it were to happen again.
Ever since I rooted my phone it has been slowly getting glitchy and my battery life keeps dropping. I've been putting off the update because I'm not really knowledgeable about android in general and the tutorials seem kind of complicated. I just want to restore my phone to stock settings so my phone wont freeze at random times and I wont have messages pop up anymore. What the easiest way to go about deleting my twrp recovery so I can go back to stock? I don't really want to just update to a custom rom because I just want to restore my phone. Also I'd be great if there was a way to keep all my data in the process.
You would have to flash either the stock *.kdz or *.tot file to restore the phone to it's original condition, which in turn wipes everything on the phone including internal storage.

There's no way of doing that. Restoring your phone to stock wipes everything.
Hi guys, i've broken my Galaxy s4 lcd some day ago, and yesterday i've decided to sell it on ebay.
But now i have to wipe it. The problem is that i am running a custom Touchwiz rom and Philz touch recovery. So i don't think i can use Kies to make a factory reset.
I can use Odin to flash a stock image etc... But i don't know how to solve completely my problems.
Can someone help me? Thx

Odin will fix it.
Flash the stock ronin Odin. All your user data will be (sort of) removed.
A skilled user could still recover your user data' but most people won't even know its there.
You will not need the phone's screen to work at any point in the Odin process.

Odin will wipe the data as well as Kies will.
But neither really removes the data. Both just remove the directory structure which makes it easy to sort the data.
To really remove the data you need to overwrite it with new data. That is much more difficult to do without access to the screen on the phone.
You could do it in recovery with the device mounted via usb to a computer. But you generally need to select that in recovery using the touch screen.
You can also push data to the device to overwrite using adb, but its more difficult.
All in all though...unless you have evidence of your participation in a crime on the phone, don't be so worried about it. It will be okay.

Since Google implemented Trim in Android 4.3, it's impossible (as of yet) to recover deleted data. I tried several guides here on XDA on data recovery and none of them work anymore.
See for example this article.
http://forensic.belkasoft.com/en/why-ssd-destroy-court-evidence
So basically if you delete a file or format your system, the data is really gone.

It wont ever wipe the external sd card
The internal sd card should depend on the tar file and if it formats that partition or not.
I never really paid attention to it myself because I have never had to flash a full stock restore on my S4 so I have no idea what the standard for S4 firmwares is.
The internal data partition though should be wiped with a full stock firmware in odin every single time.

Well, it's not. Believe me. I used to flash stock rom on S4 number of times and I can confirm that flashing stock rom with Odin DOES NOT WIPE any user data. Your photos and other files stays intact as well as the apss ( you may loose some apps internal data ) until factory reset is performed either from stock recovery or from rom itself.

Guys need help urgently.
Today i uninstalled a software called smule and it caused by phone to hang. This automatically restarted my phone and was stuck at the Samsung Logo.
Tried to do soft reset did not work, tried wipe cache from recovery did not work. When I try to mount from the system recovery it will not connect to my PC.
I have 40 GB of pic and videos on my phone which I just can't loose. Need to recover anyhow. Hence one option that i can think of is using the TWRP recovery and mount the phone and copy my important data to pc.
My phone is the 128 GB version Black Pearl. Box say SM-g935FD1
Please help as the data is very precious to me - I don't mind loosing all the apps and settings but can't afford loss of data for me.
I can enter recovery mode and download mode. But can't enter the safe mode.
I have downloaded the following twrp-3.1.1-0-hero2lte.img and ODIN.
Forget twrp. This thing require your /data to be formated first to be able to read data.

Cant I install the TWRP and boot to the recovery and mount the disc to read. Even that will not be possible ?

No.
TWRP can't mount the disk because it is encrypted.
Data on S7 are encrypted by default.
You need to remove encryption by formatting before twrp be able to mount the disk. So any data before being formatted will be lost and unrecoverable.

No way to recovery. NonXtreme said it as it is.
Just don't do anything that might compromise the data. Wait until someone with experience shows up and meanwhile take it to a samsung store. They might have the tools to bypass whatever causing the bootloop.

is 4 years on xda and over 350 posts not experience?
NonXtreme was correct in what he posted, so why are you saying ignore him?
Damn man. Really need to make regular backups to avoid this my first thought would have been TWRP but of course, as the guys above had said, you simply can't mount /data unless you format it first.
Was it simply an app install? I've never had this sort of thing happen over a simple install.
DON'T DO THIS YET. WAIT FOR FURTHER FEEDBACK.
Guys, could he install fw over the top with odin and home_csc to try avoid wiping data or does this still present an issue with encryption?
Or maybe even just the AP? I can't remember exactly which options wipe data and which ones don't.
Maybe you can try flashing with HOME_CSC. If I remember correctly that doesn't wipe anything - apps and data all remain as-is. Only point where you might be stuck is that during the flashing process or at first boot it will ask for a Pin, and if you have not setup a start up pin in secure startup, you can simply enter "default_password" (without quotes - used to work with older firmwares for S7 edge, but I think I read somewhere that this pin trick now doesn't work with latest one) - so maybe flash the latest and try, if that doesn't work flash an older firmware (with HOME_CSC) and boot and connect your phone to pc and recover - though phone will keep throwing force close errors, and once data is copied flash latest with CSC (instead of HOME_CSC) to wipe the phone clean and start afresh.
Hi there,
Its been a long time using the Note 3 since 2013. It had many issue but still carried on. But few days back when weak up in the morning saw the phone was off, though it was in charge full night. When turned it on it stuck in the Samsung glowing logo and nothing after that, it keep showing the same logo until it power is gone. Don’t know what happened that night, it was installing an update by itself or not.
Then google it and no steps helps, used odin and reflash with latest firmware from sammobile but that too didn’t help. I’ve lots of data in internal storage including sms and contacts and pictures. I’ve no issue to throwing off the phone but I cant lost all data in it, it will be a huge loss as just became a father and lots of pics on my new born baby, so you can understand the value.
Can anyone suggest how can I recover the data? Check the attachment for its current state. Thanks in advance.

I don't know how viable, but have you tried to install a custom recovery (TWRP, won't erase your media) and access recovery, connect to the computer and enable MTP.
It would be totally up to you.

With TWRP all you have to do is to boot into recovery and select the "Mount" option en check if MTP is enabled. After that your PC should recognize your phone as storage and you can recover/move anything from the internal SD card to the computer or to a USB drive if you want, or just save it to the PC. However, this will only allow you to recover things you have saved in your internal memory. This only includes photos, videos, whatsapp files, etc.... and not contacts, SMS and app settings.

ok thanks for the details, I've set everything and just waiting to hit the start button for TWRP Recovery. Before doing just wanted to know isnt their any file that I can copy and replace in other phone like contact.spb which stored all contact data (just for example)
And If I do the TWRP Recovery, after those backup done can I go back to the original recovery just by flashing it again? then I will look for another way to turn on the phone?

I think it IS possible to return to previous recovery (I've never attempted it) but you'd have to find the file to flash via Odin and try to return that way.
I'm not sure about moving your contact information from one phone to another by the method you described, I always sync my contacts via my Google account so usually any other phone I sync with Google has all my contacts.

Hi, Thank you, I never payed with the phone and neither rooted though I'm a IT guy. With the twrp I couldnt see the root folder, though I checked to mount system but still not. I dont know how to root it, just want to throw the phone off after taking backup. Did you ever do wipe cache in recovery?

After that reboot, see if that bootloop still there.

Most likely, yes. I've never done it, but you could also search for a .??? extension reader (depends on what file extension the contacts and sms files are, not really sure) on google and try to read them that way, it is a high possibility that you might find software for your PC specifically designed to read those files.
Heck, you might even be able to open them with a text reading app, who knows.

Great, thanks for your help and feedback. I'm trying again today and let you know what happens. With a CWM version I think my phone is rooted but not sure. While installing I saw the CWM saying rooting for a sec and then restart.
So after few days I got some time to work on it. I did CWM Recovery and took the full backup and the format and reset. Now the phone turned on and restored the backup by CWM but again its in Boot loop. Now what to do? and yes I think its rooted now.
I only need contacts sms and action memo, thats all
