Storage issue. - X Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I own a Moto x play which fell down from the table top yesterday and broke the glass.
Everything still works fine except that nothing is getting stored on my device.
I mean no downloads from browsers, not even any camera app is able to save pictures though the camera is working, even no image is showing up in the gallery, although I am able to look them up in ES File Explorer. But I can download applications through play store.
Please help.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thankyou.

Camera Pictures not showing up in gallery...

... problem exactly as stated above. Sometimes I will take a picture with the camera and it doesn't show up in the photo gallery until I restart the phone.
Anyone else have a problem with this? Has anyone figured out a way to fix it without restarting?
Yeah I'm having these issue as well and also happens with picture downloads. they wont show in the gallery until after a few reboots at times as well. or sure what's going on with that.
a quick fix, so you dont have to reboot your phone is to kill gallery with a task manager, and open it up again.
ok guys i'm had that same issue now my gallery is gone altogether....my gallery will load but it says loading images...then it says there is no content to be read...i down load an app from the market and it not seeing my sd card either...but if i go in file explore i can see everything on my card....i done a hard reset like three time no luck please help....htc said may have to send the phone back...i think its to small of an issue to lose my phone for a week or more...it maybe a simple fix so i will try this first before...ty for any help someone can offer
oh yeah if i take a new pic it will show up in the gallery but when i reboot its gone....
ok guys i fixed....what i did was took everything off my sd card....re formated...turn the phone off for like 5 min....then back on....put every thing back on the card check the music player and gallery to see if they worked and everything was there....then i rebooted to see if everything would disappear so far i'm good to go i have all my pics and files back....only thing on the first gallery load up be patient it take a min to load the sd card it will flash loading...but after that im good to go...i'm by a new sd card i think that may have been the issue....
It happens to me too. I unmount and remount the sdcard, and the Gallery finds everything.
I find if i go into the camera app, the latest photo is there in the preview box. if i open it, and then go back to the gallery app, it (usually) appears. but yes, annoying bug really.

oddly, i never had this problem until just a second ago, but what this guy said is exactly how i got around it too. i took a photo, task killed camera, went to gallery, no photo, reopened camera, photo was in preview, clicked on it, went to gallery from there, and there it was, ready to share.
it's gotta be a bug of some kind. perhaps the most recent photo isn't loaded to gallery until another photo is taken, or you click preview box. stupid, but possible.
Problem Solved
Hi friends, I encountered the problem as well today and found the solution: Go to the sdcard and search folders for a file named .nomedia and delete it should solve the problem. No need to format or things like that worked fine for me. seems some kind of bug
.nomedia is a file designed to hide directories from being searched by Android Media Scan (which includes Gallery). There is absolutely no reason to delete it, and it's not a bug.
However, there is a bug in Media Scan, which sometimes causes Gallery to "miss" pictures. Executing Media Rescan (from "Development") solves it, or as stated above, just unmounting and mounting the SD card.
There's no Media Rescan in Development on my gb 2.3.3.
I've experienced something similar. I've been running the various CM7 builds and whenever I'd take a pic and immediately share it on Facebook, the pic will never be seen again.
Since then, I've gotten in the habit of hitting up Sugarsync first to sync the new pics, the send it up to Facebook via the gallery.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
stock 2.3.3 and i had the problem today.
force quit gallery and it was back to normal.
why is 2.3.3 so buggy!?

Note 4 (SM-N910T) no Gallery App thumbnails, very confused

Hi everyone -
It's been a while since I've been around these parts, but I recently switched from my Note 3 to the Note 4 just a week or so ago, and having only a single issue that is perplexing me that I would be very grateful if anyone knows how to troubleshoot. I've attached a screenshot of my current hardware/firmware setup in case this is needed.
Basically, my stock Gallery app doesn't show thumbnails of anything. When I open the Gallery, I can see all the sub-sections just fine (i.e. camera, movies, gifs, pictures, etc), but can't actually see a sample thumbnail from any of those sub-sections.
If I click on one of the sub-sections (for example, Camera), I can see all the files that exist in there, but still no thumbnails. It's reading all my media files just fine, the phone is "seeing" them all.
Even weirder still is that if I click on the very first picture file in that Camera sub-category, it opens the picture just fine. HOWEVER, if I try to zoom on the picture, the screen instantly goes black. Once I zoom back out, I can see the full picture again. Try to zoom in, goes black; zoom back out, see it just fine.
I currently am running a 128gb U1 Samsung MicroSD card in the phone, and have everything saved there. But I've also tried changing the settings so the phone saves a camera shot to the internal storage and the same thing still happens (no thumbnails in the Gallery or the sub-section, and no ability to zoom on the file).
I'm lost here. I've never had this issue with my LG Chocolate, S2 or Note 3. Short of a hard reset, any ideas? The phone was brand new. Truly, any help would be greatly appreciated.
Nobody? Any ideas? Please....
First try a factory reset, if that does not fix your issue then download stock firmware from sammobile and flash it with odin. you can youtube "how to flash stock firmware with odin" to get more details.

Need help! Recovering missing/deleted photos

Hi All,
Took part in a 17 mile run and took a bunch of photos. Even posted one of the photos on Instagram. I ran with the phone in a belt pouch with Runkeeper and Strava running. At the end of the run, I found a whole bunch of apps open and swiped them closed(this has happened in the past due to the phone being bounced/rubbed around while running. Runkeeper and Stava worked fine and saved my run. When I went to check my photos that I had taken, they were all gone from Google Photos and my Camera gallery except in Google Photos, the IG photo was saved.
What happened? And is there any way of recovering them? I disabled sync and have not turned on the wifi on the phone to prevent the phone from overwriting anything that may still be in memory. The phone is unrooted. I have tried Wondershare Dr.Fone for ?Androiid with no success and it suggests to root the phone. I really would like to recover these photos if possibly.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
Anyway to get the Nexus 6P to show as a drive? Most of the recovery programs are looking for drives and only my C: (hard drive is showing) though my 6P is connected by USB MTP.
fwiw - I noticed using Windows Explorer in the DCIM/Camera foldder there are some photos(look like just thumbnails based on size) from yesterday but when viewing them, they are actually thumbnails/pics from Friday though the date stamp was 2/27. Wonder if things are also corrupted.
Remembered that Android does not allow to be recognized as a USB Mass Storage Device. I found this program that allows you to map a MTP device as a Virtual Drive - http://www.mtpdrive.com/download.html
So far, Programs do not recognize the drive but Windows Explorer does.
It won't help you with this situation, but Dumpster is a fantastic app to protect yourself going forward.
^this!
Thanks, will install later on. Actually, I noticed a number of photos that I took the night before are missing from the camera gallery also but those were uploaded to Google photos.
Still don't understand how photos could have been deleted.

Google Photos doesn't "map" my pictures despite being on my phone

I have this issue where my pictures (camera pics and otherwise) doesn't show up in the photos app.
Using a file explorer app, I see that all my images are there in the DCIM folder, so they are definitely still on the phone.
Using the likes of WhatsApp and similar, I used to be able to select and send pictures, and it would categorize them into the folders I've downloaded them into.
For instance, while camera pictures are in /DCIM/Camera - images downloaded from apps and websites are in either /Download or /Pictures/{app_name}
Additionally, the file explorer tends to categorize your files into subcategories like "pictures", "apps" etc., but it doesn't do that for older files - only for new ones. So if I take a picture with the camera, it'll pop into Google Photos as well as being categorized a "picture" by the file explorer. Physically, it still has the same location as all the other camera pictures, which is /DCIM/Camera
My question is, how do I get the phone/Google Photos/file categorizer/whatever to "map" my pictures as being pictures again?
Setup info:
Huawei Nexus 6P, 64 GB, no external SD card
Rooted, PureNexus (latest July release)
ElementalX kernel (latest release)

UPDATE: So it appears, if there's a ".nomedia" file in any directory, it will not show files in this and recursively in media applications (photos, music, etc.) -- this could be what's causing this. But then I don't understand why NEW files shows up.
Is it recommended to delete the .nomedia file in root/sdcard ? I ask because I figure it's there for a reason.
having a .NOMEDIA file on a folder will cause it to be excluded
thats a feature
Also, if the folder name has a . in it at the beggining it will also do that... for example changing Camera to .Camera will exclude it

Yeah thanks, but removing the file does nothing. Old pictures are still nowhere to be found in gallery apps like Google Photos.
Is there a way to "re-map/re-index" media files?
i just want to state the obvious.... but did you open PHOTOS, then click the top left hambuger button and click DEVICE FOLDERS ??? According to you nothing still shows after this??
If you install an aftermarket app like Quickpic, does it still not show them?
Stopped using google photos for same reason. I flash roms like atleast once a month, all the photos that i took after flashing rom will show up, all the ones that were taken before flash wont. It has nothing to do with .nomedia or stuff like that, it just wont show them. If i go through directories i can reach them, i can also see them using any other gallery app, this only happens in google photos. I had a theory it had something to do with cloud backup, as if photos arent backed up in cloud it wont show them.

Thanks chaco81, I have tried device folders - and nothing is in there.
Next up, installed Quickpic and now they are all there. They are all categorized exactly as they should be. Fantastic! Just really weird it doesn't work with Google Photos, which leads me to this comment by @feis ....

Dude, thank you! That must be it, then. How weird is that? The cloud thing I theorized as well, as I don't want Google backing them up and therefore have it disabled. But like I said, I just installed Quickpic and now they're all there, neatly categorized into "screenshots", "camera", "Download" etc.
Next issue: This still persist with WhatsApp. When I go into "Gallery" (to send a picture or video), it'll only the new photos and videos -- none of the old ones. This, again, leads me to believe something is not as it should be. What causes this, and how do you fix it? Do you need to somehow "rescan" and "reindex" your media files?
Uninstalled google photos, started using app called "piktures" and all my problems were gone.
If you are going to use quickpic I would side load the last version before cheetah took over and ruined the app with all the cloud ***t Trying to think of what the last version was, maybe 4.5.2

I read about that. I just installed Quickpic, and I don't get what the big issue is. The only cloud-thing I saw was an icon that I could easily disable/remove.
@feis
How exactly did you remove Google Photos? I can't uninstall.
I too have this issue. Annoying and I really should just use a different pic app
Just a quick update on this: The issue has been _sort of_ fixed by just switching to another photos app. So I think the problem is just that Google Photos doesn't reindex, and there doesn't seem to be a way to force it.
However, other apps that has access to media such as WhatsApp -- in this I still don't have the option of viewing older photos. So apps like WhatsApp's gallery feature, doesn't reindex either. Pretty annoying actually.

sorry messenger was unable to process the file

Here's a new one on me. I took some pictures and all a sudden I can't share them with messaging or messenger. I get sorry "messenger was unable to process the file" I am using quikpic and also tried snap gallery. i tried clearing data/cache for quikpic and messages, did a smart clean and a reboot. I'm lost. any help is appreciated. I hope i don't have to reset.
looks like my camera pics moved back to the internal memory somehow and my explorer app still shows them on the SD card and when i try to open them then they won't load because they're not there. stock cam still shows SD card for storage. one of my camera apps must have glitched the phone.
So i copied the pics from internal camera folder to the external now i can' t look at those either. i think the file folder structure is glitched. the quikpic still can read pics from the memory card other then what i copied over. i do'n't know what happened. could have happened with Gcam froze up last night after taking a few pictures. so i loaded a diff camera to take pictures in a hurry. they must have both been trying to write to memory.
i still can't get my photos to my computer or anything. i can view them with photo galleries, edit with snapseed and send to mom with messaging through snapseed but the exported files can't be viewed either. i have some really nice pics of my pet birds that isn't easy to take sometimes. Is there some way to recover them?
now i am having the same problem when trying to load music from the file manager. the players say the file was modified or deleted.
