Scrolling smoothness - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Real Life Review

Some phones exhibit choppy scrolling, especially when navigating long web pages when multiple apps are running in the background. Rate this thread to express how you smooth scrolling feels on the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 under such conditions. A higher rating indicates that scrolling is always buttery smooth, even when you're reading a 10,000 word article on "how to kiss a girl".
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

It's a typical Samsung phone. In other words, not the best. You'll see some frame drops and stuttering on certain apps. Compared to a Pixel phone, it's very choppy. Compared to other phones, especially Samsung, it's maybe a little better than usual.

I'm on my second day of use and I've found the fluidity of the interface to be smooth and without any lag. YMMV.

Ironically the only jumpy, stuttery scrolling I've encountered on this phone is with the official XDA app! Uninstalled and use Samsung browser and dark theme. Slicker than a buttered Otter.

I get a small stutter jumping from home screen into the app menus, had it from the minute it was unboxed. Annoying really!

My S8 had pretty choppy scrolling, especially when scrolling slowly (keeping finger on the screen). However, my Note 8 is buttery smooth in every app so far!

Mine seems very choppy when scrolling YouTube comments

I will say this: on performance mode, this is significantly minimized. I'm actually impressed!

I've set all animations at .5 and haven't seen any stutter or lag at all. I really don't remember any before I changed the settings. It's just an automatic thing I do with Samsung phones. I am also on high performance mode.

My animations are on 0.5 as well, and in performance mode it is almost flawless. That's the key I've realized. Non-performance mode was noticeably worse for me (which is why all the store models looked choppy to me - they were incapable of going into performance mode).

Besides slightly raising brightness and setting the resolution all the way up what else does performance mode do?

Avoids throttling the CPU I think.

Animations set at 0.5.
Smooth scrolls in browsers and tumblr twitter

i have set the animations to 0.5 but Twitter still lags badly.. bit fustrating tbh compared to the iphone twitter app.. i don't understand whys look and perform so much better on iphones

I haven't noticed any lag scrolling since I got it. I just turned Animations off today, I didn't realize you could do that in the Dev options now. TBH I don't like animations just to have animations, I turn them off all my PCs too. If I run into any issues with them off, I"ll try .5

For those who feel choppy, I kindly ask you to disable any services in the accessibility and try again. I have not experienced any stutter except for occasion stutter when I scroll in 'running service' in 'developer option'.

Is exynos throttled more than Snapdragon versions? I've used both now and notice slight lags in exynos (balanced mode)

Running processes are fine, but Chrome (e.g. this page), Twitter etc. are quite choppy. I'm running high performance mode, think it helped a little but not enough. Hope it's something they'll be able to fix with an update

Is stuttering while scrolling through lists normal for android phones?

I'm new to android phones. In fact, other than reading about them, my only experience with them is playing with the evo 4g for about 10 minutes. I was surprised at the significant stuttering while trying to scroll through lists. It made navigating the sprint tv application very very frustrating. Scrolling through the browser settings was also very annoying because of the stutter. Is this normal for android phones? Is it normal for the evo? Is there some way to fix it?
Right now I have an iphone 3g. I'm not happy with having to jailbreak my iphone just to get some basic functionality that I need. I'm afraid that with the iphone 4 won't even be able to turn on a jail broken phone without plugging it into a computer, so I really am looking for an android device, but this scrolling stutter might be a deal breaker, if it is normal.
Demo models are always torn up and not typical.
I really don't have any lag but I'm also rooted, removed the bloat and have a great task manager installed.
the nexus never stuttered. not a single step. the evo tends to. i think it has something to do with the bloatware that htc and sprint have filled it up with.
could be the 30 fps bug. the device is locked at displaying 30 frames per second so things could be choppy. that's the second thing i noticed about the phone. first was how fuzzy everything looked - i upgraded from a droid so that could be the reason.
I don't think its the 30fps bug. 30 fps would be perfectly acceptable. This is a stutter, not just slow frame rate.
If you're coming from an iPhone I can see how the scrolling would bother you. The iPhone is consistently 60fps in the UI at almost all times, does not suffer the choppiness of the Android UI when scrolling lists or applications. Restoring the 60fps target + Froyo should get the Android UI experience up to acceptable levels in my opinion.
It's the live wallpapers that make my app list stutter. I turned it off and it's smooth now.

OMGG stop blaming a 30fps cap for the phone being laggy AT ALL. Its like every single forum if someone brings something up about the phone freezing, lagging, glitching, or not working. Some random person says "its probably because the 30fps cap". Thats not going to stop things from scrolling all in one motion.
But like others have said here, its most likely just because its a demo phone and there might of been a lot of things running. Since most people dont know how to operate android devices they dont close the program and just open everything and anything. Also htc/sprint put a lot on to the phone and bog it down. The phone will be more then operational without rooting, but if you do root, you can give the phone a big increase in speed.
The 'performance improving' ROMs seem to have a great placebo effect.
The phone stutters regardless of what rom you use. The EVO 4G is a laggy phone. It is very unimpressive.
Having sprint bloatware taking up space in your phone's flash memory does not affect performance. It is not taking up ram unless it's running, and even if it is, it will get reclaimed automatically by the operating system as needed.

I seem to disagree with u there. My EVO hasnt choked once. Yeah, its a little jittery with LWP running, but without the LWP, my EVO is as smooth as can be. Not one complaint.

I'm coming from an iphone 3g which had no UI lag. Opening and closing apps took longer though. Scrolling, switching homescreens, and especially scrolling the apps list seems extremely laggy on the Evo..
Try launcher pro if you refuse to root and use the custom roms.
I have virtually zero lag and free memory is always over 200 mb
I'll agree, I just came from an iPhone 3gs and one of the first things I noticed was that the Evo wasn't as smooth. I really like the OS but the scrolling needs to be fixed.
Sent from my HTC Evo using tapatalk.
Hell... I came from an iphone 2G and it scrolls smoother than my evo.
I really think it's the refresh rate.
I had a Nexus One and never noticed the stutter, though some of my iPhone-toting friends did. But the second I updated to Froyo and everything was much faster and more responsive, I could notice how much slower scrolling and switching screens on 2.1 devices was. It's just a matter of what you're used to.
I get some stuttering when scrolling. My Hero (which I still have) doesn't do this. Strange thing is that sometimes I do not see this stuttering and it's smooth as butter. My thought is that something in the background is running and eating up CPU time.
Live wallpapers seem to make a huge difference in how smooth and regular the touch screen refreshes (like scrolling). I don't have big problems with preinstalled live wallpapers by Android and HTC, but when using most downloaded live wallpapers, the difference is noticable - for example, Galactic Core and RedEye Scanner live wallpapers make scrolling noticeably choppier.
This doesn't seem to happen as much with Nexus One I have access to. I think it might the combination of the 30fps cap and the Sense UI.
Well my plan now is to wait until the iPhone 4 is jailbroken. If the evo's stutter is fixed to the point that it is like other android phones, I'll buy the evo. Of not, I'll get the iPhone unless there's a new option on sprint or AT&T.
I should say that I don't buy that the stutter is due to the 30fps cap. I know what 30fps looks like. The scroll stutter/lag hurts useability. A smooth 30fps wouldn't.
It doesn't stutter unless your running certain live wallpapers. If you use a regular wallpaper there is no stuttering. This is not a problem with EVO as I had same problem on my Nexus but after the update to froyo everything was silky smooth even with live wallpapers. So my suggestion is if it bothers you just use a regular wallpaper until froyo drops on the EVO.

I have my P20 pro since yesterday... These reviews on the internet are a joke!!!! This phone is one of the baddest phone I ever had. And I had a lot of phones!
Every damn animations are sluggish, lags and sometimes even freeze! My galaxy S7 was performing way better... And I hate Samsung... I reset the device more than three times. Since the first screen of setup when choosing language the animation seems to be at 24 fps... What a joke! Probably going back to a pixel 2 xl. The overall speed, opening and switching between apps is great but damn these animations... No more chinese rubbish!

Lol just you... i have this Phone and no lag, no freeze, all run perfect.
Ditto
Ok guys, record your screens and show us how smooth your P20 PRO are!?!?
Because without your approval, our lives will be incomplete
Relax dude. My phone is perfectly smooth and this is me coming from a pixel 2. If you don't like it, return it.
But WTF... I'm just saying that this phone has a lot of stutter in its animations. I'll go check on another P20 pro in a shop to see if the problem is only on mine. I had a pixel 2 xl too and the overall impression of smoothness was way better. It will be more constructive to record other videos to prove your affirmation... But anyway...

I usually just lurk in these threads, but I also have this problem.
Overall phone speed is fine, but there are a few things that just seem to be REALLY slow.
Scrolling speed in apps is mostly fine, but system animations seem to stutter. Switching between apps, going back to Homescreen, etc.
Doesn't sound like much, but it really diminishes the experience

Try switching animations and transitions to 0.5x from developer menu?
That's the only change I've made

I've not had the same issues as you yet (touches wood) but if you unlock developer options you can change the animation speed from x1 to .05 or lower. I have mine set to x0.5 which makes menu transitions feel snappier
You're a day one adopter. Do you expect there to be no firmware revisions?
Got the P20 pro since friday...luv it! no lags, no freeze, no stuttering!
Fast as predicted!
people coming from pixel 2 or pixel 2 xl, hell even from first generation pixel please dont compare any other android to them when it come to smoothness, they are even smoother than an iPhone !!!
i had the same issue with Mate 10, i made sure that i stopped most of the background apps (go to battery then launch then disable all except what u need like social media and emails) and i didnt have a problem since, although its a QHD screen with only 4gb of RAM
and trust me, these freakishly huawei devices just gets better and faster with time even before the AI era , it is just how EMUI works
so yeah, if u want the camera, the phenomenal battery life infrared and the TV thing then keep it, otherwise seriously the Pixel 2 is just better in every single way

When we have both devices side by side you can't ask us not compare and I'm finding very little difference.
This is my first pixel device and I don't see what all the fuss was about, it has stutters too and the battery life yoyos after every update.
For me so far this device is just as responsive however I'm not saying other people aren't experiencing issues, videos have been posted and I can clearly see it but for me it's just as fast and no google maps problems like I've seen others have (still not denying this, there's kinks out there)
This is release software, give them time to throw out updates.
You for example also say the pixel is the smoothest phone out there but I had PLENTY of hiccups with mine and no amount of updates or flashing fixed it, infact it just got worse and i had to go through 2 units with different issues, this was to replace the latest unit where the proximity sensor is now busted and the phone doesn't wake up after a call without a reboot.
Every time you replace the unit you risk getting one with bad blue tint and it's just not worth all the effort, for me this is an upgrade in every way but screen resolution which is definitely not a deal breaker.
In my experience the p20 pro is very responsive, but the scrolling does stutter quite a bit. Perhaps due to weak GPU and worse software optimisation?
Sent from my CLT-L09 using Tapatalk
I have a feeling that there are already different versions of the firmware available or preinstalled, thats why some ppl have hiccups and some dont. I know someone from UK who has the stuttering in Google Maps. But one in Germany who doesn't. Just wait a few days, a first update will come soon.
I've both the P20 Pro and the Pixel 2XL and yes the stock experience is smoother on the Pixel, I've not attempted to improve the P20 yet though. But never expected it to be as smooth anyway.

Device is incredibly smooth. It seems like 60 fps in nearly all applications I've went through so far.
The only good phones I've ever used before this have been U11, View10 and that's it.
Scrolling is head and shoulders above them.
Literally smooooooth AF

Yup. The problem is, not everyone can see that. For instance, I said in an article that the Play Store (one example) is jittery/stuttery when scrolling up/down in pretty much every 'corner of the app. People thought I was trolling. And my eyes perceive those stutters as relatively obvious ones. I don't understand how people can't see that. Then there's Twitter. If people can't see that Twitter stutters like crazy, then I don't know what else to say. I don't think the OP6 is smoother than the Pixel 2XL, even though that one's a generation behind. Imagine how good the Pixel 3 is gonna be.

Yeah. Most people probably don't notice it, but my eyes are very sensitive to it. I game on a 165 Hz G-sync monitor and I still notice microstutter at high frame rates lol. I wonder how havoc os or lineage os is? Maybe it's just the OS and not the device causing it.

Of course the device is not the cause. It's the software that facilitates the appearance of these jitters/stutters. It's all about optimization.
I only got one issue with stuttering. That was on day one, when camera application stuttered and crashed. After that everything went fine. That probably because I had two camera apps. One of device and one installed from Play Store.

Same here with the 165hz gsync and very sensitive eyes.. Thus far I haven't noticed any stutters on the device yet been using Instagram, telegram and chrome but nothing so far on latest update.
If I compare my s7 edge that was just a nightmare of stutters.
Yup I get stuttering here, similar to my 3 back in the day. I wonder if tweaking the cpu governor has the same effects as it did on my 3. There is no "conservative" selection anymore.
O notice in some apps now. Not in chrome or Samsung browser (use it for better battery for some reason..)
But apps like Instagram (when loading pictures)
And also play store (most likely loading something too)
I'm thinking it's more about poorly designed apps rather that the device itself.
It seems that scrolling smoothness took a hit after the Pie update, many apps (including chrome) seem to stutter a lot for me.

Absolutely true. I just couldn't take it anymore and decided to install the latest Open Beta build, considering that Beta 3 was pretty smooth overall. And yes, Beta 4 is smoother than stable Pie. I don't get how the initial stable Pie build managed to make it to the masses in such a state. For the past few days, the experience on my phone was utter s#!t. I'll stay on Open Beta until things get better on 'stable Pie.
Is there scroll stutter on pie-based LOS and Havoc OS or is it limited to OOS only?

Recent apps lag
Hello everyone,
I'm experiencing some stutter and lags with my One Plus 6. For exempe, if I scroll quickly trough the recent apps in the multitask, I can see some frame drops and it's very annoying. I don't understand why...It should work extremely fluessly with a Snapdragon 845. Are some people having the same issue here ?
Thank you so much !
The only way I've found of stopping the stuttering and poor scrolling is for to go to developer options and set the background process limit to "at most, 4 process"

Yes the phone performs well and good.
Smoothest Android experience I've ever had yet and I used Huawei EMUI 8 before, which is also extremeley smooth.
Stock Android doesn't run as smooth as EMUI or ONE UI do.
Only iOS runs smoother, but I thinks it's also the touch implementaion into iOS, not only optimized software.
I had an S7 as a work phone until last year and this was so terrible to work with. It lagged everywhere. Samsung made a huge effort with One UI.
The only time I've noticed some stutter is the odd time when swiping down the notification shade on the lock screen. Even then, it's been very rare.
S10 scrolling is okay, iOS still has the great scrolling experience I've had. I hope Android or maybe Samsung can mimic that scrolling behavior.
I used an iPhone X before and with my new S10 the scrolling feels really strange. I also tested it on a S9 of a fried and there it is the same.
It definetily is really smooth, but if you flick scroll for example in Instagram and you want to stop scrolling with tap-holding the screen again, then there is a small delay. Also the scroll speed is very strange in my opinion. Does somebody have the same issue?
The scrolling on my iPhone X definetily feels more natural.
Does somebody also noticed a small stutter when scrolling through the YouTube feed? Same with reddit.
Yes! I did, but on a 10e and only sometimes. Its the same in Nova App Drawer and Whatsapp for instance.
Maybe I'm tripping and also I've read that now every app uses gpu to draw 2D but maybe you should tell me your experience with this option enabled in devs options.

Mine is doing fine. I think the reason is more ram compared to the samsung S8 I had. More ram maybe indicates we see few years of updates for the S10.

You can check this if you are on 120 mhz and try to increase the volume in landscape mode, you will see the volume slider flashing and not showing completely. The first time you click you might see it clearly but the following number of times it will flash.
This explains the need for variable flash rate on some apps, otherwise the experience will be lousy. I believe 90 mhz is sufficient for most tasks.
Edit: All of this has been fixed after OTA update or simply my gesture navigation app was the cause of it. Anyway all good now.
When i choosen 120Hz mode, on Display settings, the screen scrolls so fast and so smooth that I could'nt believe my eyes. If I had to see that on a video, I would have thought that video is a fake!! Impressing!!!
anyone can try the "Night Light" feature, once u enable it and at the same time, randomly scroll ur app drawer/pull up and down ur notification bar, there will a slight stuttering happen when u enable night light, im on 120hz RR (refresh rate)
Mine is smooth as butter!!

I've listened in some youtube review.... just pushing calculator numbers it's not the same feeling/as fast as other top models (I guess iPhone-Samsung).

No, its much faster! ? The iCrap, Samsung, etc. feels slower and laggy in comparison to the ROG phone 2!
First day with this phone and most things are good enough but the navigation gestures are not quite fast as iOS or even P30 Pro which was my previous phone. I hope things get better with Android 10.

i've used the 11pro and trust me if you compromise a little on color accuracy and brightness range, rog 2 has the smoothest diplay. i hope someone ports a o2 os rom and then itll be cherry on the cake.
Yeah, that's my prob. I want ZenUI software. Semi-stock original software...
It is clear while scrolling ASUS ROG Phone II... It is smooth and clean.. But in some occurrence it is choppy. Recently i visited a tamil font website where the scrolling was not so clear. I even donot know whether it is mobile's bug or website bug. Any experienced it?
I mostly use 90Hz...120Hz is overkill for daily use.

I don't get any screen flashing on mine.
I tried 120Hz and switched to landscape and then back and got no screen flashing.
Mine is the Elite Rog Phone 2 with 512GB storage and 12GB RAM.
hm, it isn't the smoothest, but anyway I like it. If you something better, try IPhone)
