[GUIDE] Unlocking the bootloader on the Mi Max 2 Global Version - Xiaomi Mi Max 2 Guides, News, & Discussion

I recently received my black Xiaomi Mi Max 2 Global Version and wished to unlock the bootloader in order to create a Custom firmware (which will be based around Stock, but have a lower DPI and use the Google Now launcher to have 7 icons in the dock & a 6x6 icon grid elsewhere).
During the unlock process I got stuck within the 'Add account and device' in Developer Options, with the error code 86006 being displayed. The solution to this issue is to change from the Stable MIUI 8 to the latest Developer ROM - once this is flashed, the device will register with no error messages.
An overview of the process is therefore:
1. Flash the latest Development ROM on the phone, via the Updater app
2. Register for a Mi account, if you do not have one, and log into the phone with this account.
3. Request the Unlock privilege for your Mi account
4. Enroll the device for an Unlock in Developer Options
5. Wait 72 hours
6. Unlock the bootloader with the Windows Mi Flash Unlock tool.
Mi Account
The Unlock tool will require that the phone is logged into the same Xiaomi account in order for the unlock process to be successful, so ensure you have set yourself up with a Mi account and signed into the phone using this account.
I tend to ensure I have posted a few items on the MIUI forum before I make a request as, during the request process, it states that they will take the activity of your account into consideration when they are making the decision to grant you the unlock privilege.
If the request is denied, you have to wait 30 days to re-apply, so better to be safe than sorry!
Request the Unlock privilege
The first thing you will need to do is to make sure you have applied for Unlock rights for your Mi account. This can be done here:
Mi Unlock
Try to make the given reason for unlocking something specific, rather than generic, as your request is more likely to be granted this way.
The time between application and hearing back from the MIUI team seems to vary. The last time I applied the request was granted after just a few minutes, but previous applications have taken days!
Setting up the phone
Before you can successfully unlock the phone using the unlocking tool you will need to enrol the phone into the scheme, which is performed in Developer Options.
1. Go to Settings / About Phone
2. Press MIUI version 7 times to enable Developer options
3. Go to Settings / Additional Settings / Developer options
4. Click on Mi Unlock status
5. Click on Add account and device
Note that if you get an error code of 86006 then download and flash the latest Developer ROM through the built-in Updater app:
Xiaomi ROM Download
Three Day Wait
After enrolling the phone, Xiaomi require that 72 hours (3 days) must elapse before the bootloader can be unlocked with Xiaomi's MiFlash Unlock Tool.
If you attempt to unlock during this period, the process will get to 99% before displaying an error message requesting you wait 72 hours.
Unlocking the bootloader
Once the phone is enrolled and 72 hours have passed, you can use the Unlock tool.
This can be downloaded from the MIUI Unlock site once your unlock request has been granted:
Mi Unlock
On a Windows PC, extract the zip file to a temporary folder and run the miflash_unlock.exe tool.
Log on using the same Mi account that you have signed into the device with and follow the on screen prompts, which involve booting the phone into Fastboot with Power and Volume Down.

Not working for me
Tried everything as mentioned above still not able to unlock the bootloader. It gets stuck at 99% and I am not able to bind my account in phone in developer options.
I get error 86012 and something in Chinese.
On latest developer ROM

Did you unlock it yourself?I got this error from tool. Couldn't find a way to make request and looped back to unlocker page always.View attachment 4237380

Some advices about same issue (Error 86006) say that after successful unlock request sending to Xiaomi (and before unlock process itself) the previous stable (not developpers!) Global ROM can be re-flashed in Mi Max 2.
So, that way phone BL can be unlocked with stable Global ROM and with unlock rights received from Xiaomi using developpers ROM. Is that true?
Another question: there is an advice (in MIUI flashing guide) to use fastboot (not recovery) flashings when flashing developpers ROM on stable ROM and vice versa, as recovery flashings may cause flashing failures . Any comment?

Hey! I've followed your guide, and at this part where I try unlocking the device using the Mi Flash tool, I'm stuck at 99% & and error comes up saying that "Current Account is not Bound to this device"
But I've signed into the same account on both the PC & the device. Also I've added the account to the device from the "Mi Unlock Status" option.
Kindly help us out..

No luck mate... :crying:
It's really annoying... They could have made a more simple procedure like sending the device's serial/IMEI & attaching it to account immediately, so that unlocking could be done immediately. But this is like, insane...

so pros, any luck with bootloader unlocking? I'm being haunted by this error as well "Current Account is not Bound to this device"
do we need to create new mi account and then bind & unlock? I was using redmi note 3 before but that device no more listed in i.mi.com.

thanks for the instant reply
does xposed module works ? xposed by purifyos team on developer rom ?

In developer options after you enable OEM unlock bootloader option, you have to bind the account in (Mi Unlock status). Remove Mi account from your device, then come here and then add the account, but ensure that you login with account id(not email and phone). After that leave it for 7 days to be safe and it can be unlocked.Phew...
Got mine this way, finally.

Buzz off 86006
There is no way that this can get solved.
Tried Developer Rom option, didn't work.
Tried Login with User ID, didn't work.
Just nothing works
any other way I can remove this error! It hurts from the Root lover point of view

When I apply to unlock this came . What to do?
So ,I flashed miui9 via updater app and applied via stock browser , I am able to apply for unlocking now.

REDMI NOTE 3 Pro [Snapdragon] Tip to unlock bootloader Safely

Considering the struggle i had unlocking the bootloader officially (not wanting to take the risk of Bricked device)
And reading all the available guides and tips around various forums on Google, this includes mi community, mi forum, mi india forum, xiaomi eu, XDA and various other sites.
i finally figured out the easiest way based on my own research and success i got.
Its safest and easiest method but require patience.
Prerequisites.
*Working and stable internet (phone and Computer)
*Mi Suite (for correct Drivers)
*Mi Account with complete details (Name, phone number and Synced)
*Mi Unlock Tool
*Same sim card on phone as on the Account
*Same Account that got the permission to unlock.
*Find phone feature turned on
*MI Account synced with Mi servers.
*Global Developer Rom installed
*Mi official USB cable (same that came with in the Box)
*Patience
Steps
1. Apply for the unlock permission.(i got mine approved in 2 days)
2. Connect your phone in normal mode to computer and sync it on the computer.
3. Open your browser and log on to MI cloud.
4. Connect to the Mi account on the browser.
5. Now enable Developer option on the phone.
6. Remove all the security features like fingerprint, pattern, pin or anything that that you have to secure your device.
7. Enable USB Debugging, OEM unlock and "Skip Screenlock" (this you will find just above USB debugging)
8. Log in to MI unlock tool and sign in with the same account as on the phone.(The account should have permission to unlock)
9. Connect you phone on Fastboot mode (Volume down+Power)
10. When the phone is detected in the unlock tool hit unlock. (process might fail with the same error "Could not verify the device or the account is different on device")
11. Retry without disconnecting the device. (Mine got unlocked in the 2nd straight attempt using these steps.)
Note: Try to unlock the device as soon as you get the permission. You will fail but try every day once, you will succeed in a weeks time.
I got my permission the 3rd day from the day of applying and i have been trying every day. I finally succeeded on the 7th day.
I hope this guide helps most of the people stuck with locked bootloader.
Let me know if you need links to the TOOLS. i can provide them.
i have got permission on the second day of my application this is my 4th day after approval try everyday since approval but no luck yet
So if my mobile number and sim is different than the mobile number on account will I have an issue?

Thats the same ROM is a week that I 'm trying , but remains 50%
After successful attempt to unlock the bootloader got a few days ?
What changes did you make to unlock the phone and PC ?
View attachment 3809318
Code:
Windows 7 64Bit
OEM Unluck & adb debug > Enable
adb ok
Mi Account Ok
Rom Global 7.3.7 Stable
Redmi Note 3 Pro 16GB
Login your mi account with the phone number both on device and mi unlock tool and try again. And make sure that there are no devices logged in with the same account.Go to i.mi.com to verify that.

Solution: Stuck at 50% when unlocking bootloader of xiaomi Redmi Note 3 SD.

I must be very lucky to have unlocked my phone after only one week after I got permission. I tried so many methods but always stuck on 50%. Before giving up and trying unofficial way, I give it last try and Woilaa I succeed. I did lot of research and I believe all information located in phone should be perfectly match to your MIUI ID/Forum settings in order to unlock your phone. So you will need below prerequisite.
PREREQUISITE (Exact what I have done to unlock my phone)
1) Go to your phone setting>My Account>Personal Info> and fill personal Information and Phone/Email. Now go to MIUI forum settings and fill exact data that you have fill up in your phone. (Including your forum username should be same as the name under personal info into phone setting).
2) Also check “Your device and MIUI version” under basic information tab. That should match with your Phone/MIUI version (when it perfectly matches stop upgrading your phone and try to hold MIUI version shows on forum setting, I unlocked my phone on Global MIUI8 stable V8.0.2.0.LHOMIDG).
2) Go to password tab (MIUI forum) and setup security check-up bar to 100% (by setting up 3 secret questions).
3) Add recovery email and recovery phone here (should same as Phone setting).
Now wait at least week after you got permission (I got it one 28-Sep and succeed on 6-Oct, exact after a week)
After week try this method to unlock:-
1) Disable Driver signature enforcement.
2) Remove all locks/patterns fingerprint. Also remove app lock and disable it.
3) Go to developer option and check USB-debug and OEM unlock (if already check then uncheck and re-check it).
4) Go to i.mi.com login with your id (same procedure mentioned all over internet) and check device shows online or not.
5) Check your device is online (should be "Online located just now") IMPORTANT WHEN YOU REFRESH FIND DEVICE BUTTON, YOU SHOULD NOTICE YOUR PHONE SCREEN FLASH or BLUE ICON OF "LOCATION SET BY GPS/SEARCHING FOR GPS" ON NOTIFICATION BAR. (I believe if this happen means your phone is successfully connected to MIUI servers, I failed before many times when I was online but never notice flash/blue icon until last time I succeed)
6) Run unlocks app with “run as administrator” and login with YOUR MI ACCOUNT ID not with your phone number or email.
7) Unlock the phone.
Hope this help anyone
Every time I brick my phone by messing up partitions and I will fire up miflash and flash through edl. I will reboot the phone and will go to fastboot mode directly after flashing. I will launch miunlock tool and clock unlock, even though I didn't even boot up the phone, it will unlock the bootloader. I did this more than 10 times and worked fine. No need to remove app lock, fingerprint, etc. The OEM unlock option in developer options should be enabled to unlock. I think the mi credentials are stored permanently in some place. I am trying to figure out that place where it stored the credentials.

You are right, MI must have stored the credentials somewhere. I think most of people stuck for the first time. Once you unlocked bootloader, it's easy to unlock again. So may be you were lucky to not faced problem at first try and now you are able to unlock it 10 times.
I think, Mi utilises a digital key similar to those used by Microsoft to activate Windows 10 licences. Once you sign in on a device with a certain Mi account, the server on Mi end ties the IMEI and Device serial number to that account. And, this is the information the MiFlashUnlock searches for when you log on to it. Of course, once you have unlocked your phone, that information too is stored on the server-end, enabling you to unlock your phone multiple times, if it ever gets relocked.
This is my hypothesis anyway. I may very well be wrong.
And, I think the key to unlocking is to remain on the same MIUI version for more than 7 days on a stretch. I did just that and voila, the unlock worked.
Yes, but mine finally unlocked immediately after installing the global dev ROM. It would never get past 50% on 8.0.1, 8.0.2, or 8.0.5. I think there are several factors ( bugs) that cause it to fail, and that those factors interact in various ways that no one here fully understands. So we get all of these elaborate processes that work for a couple of people, but then fail for many others. Oh well.

Yeah, I understand your frustration. I gave up waiting and used the procedure to flash ZXC TWRP with a locked bootloader. It worked perfectly and I was able to install SuperSU and Xposed on MIUI. I tried officially unlocking one last time after that, and it worked. Go figure.
Good luck.

Yes, it happens. I got unlock permission on 13-August-2016 but was able to unlock only on 07-October-2016. So, I don't really know how long it will take for you to be able to unlock your device.
One thing you can try is to not update MIUI for about 15 or so days and then try to unlock it.
Will wait and keep checking every few days.

Have you check MIUI version mentioned on your forum setting is same as your device or not. I believe verification of device fails because information stored on Mi servers not matches to your device. So better option is maintain MIUI version shows on forum with your device at least 5 days and stop upgrading your phone once it matches (keep phone connected with Internet during these days so server can interchange data with your device). Good luck.

He mentioned he had to add phone number in forum same as in phone setting. Also match device model on forum settings. That is true, what I try to point out in this post is you need all information perfectly matches between miui server and your device (some unmatched information like miui version, phone no etc works for some people and some not work). In a nutshell, try to match all information saved on device to miui forum settings. It should works.

I think we should try at max. those steps which we have control like flashing global dev, having only one sim also in the 1st slot for which we've got permission etc. just to maximize your chances of identifying yourself in the server.

No, nothing happens. The bootloader just remains locked, that's it. The phone continues to function as before.

BOOTLOADER UNLOCK- all variants- THE ONLY THING YOU NEED TO READ

TIRED OF DEVICE STUCK AT 50% ? Well I too was and did thousand methods and it finally paid off.
****First and foremost you dont need to wait 7 days/ 50 days/ or till your kids marraige after unlock permission granted******** I did it inside 5 hours
PREREQUISTES
1. ADB DRIVERS INSTALLED - https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588979. or just android sdk platform tools. (Shift + right click>> command window , in the installed location. Run- adb devices (Enter key). if it shows something you are good to go.)
2. Mi PC suite- For the drivers
3. Working Internet connection (not your phone's internet, to run mi unlock verification)
4. Download MI UNLOCK from http://en.miui.com/unlock/download_en.html.
5. Disable driver signature enforcement. Google it and use the temporary fix. (Choose reboot while pressing shift key, you will get all the menus)
6. Preferably global dev rom , Latest version. Just update it via system updates. ( I updated mine to latest version 7.2.24 beta and it paid off.)
7. DISABLE WINDOWS FIREWALL AND WINDOWS DEFENDER AND ANY OTHER ANTIVIRUS!!!!!!!
ASK FOR UNLOCK AUTHORIZATION
-Most of us make mistake here and then blame mi developers. Kindly follow the process sincerely.
1. create/log your MI account in device and fill at less phone number and email
2. activate "locate service", set your region in additional settings and sync it one time in mi cloud.
3. install developer version (Some people claim on stable version too, but I had dev version )
4. log your account on forum and create/verify you have a forum nickname before. (I created my 3rd account because> while applying for unlock I always put my real name and my forum name was different. YOUR ACCOUNT NICKNAME AND NAME WHILE APPLYING UNLOCK SHOULD MATCH. It is a reason for that 50% stuck error.)
5. now go to unlock miui page (PREFERRABLY >> EN.MIUI.COM)
!!! the thing asked in chinese in first window to access the demand is your forum nickname !!!
- now you are on the asking page : put your country code +xx (+91 for India) and complete by your phone number 0123456789
note : the first 0 is not often needed, example : +xx 123456789 (without 0).
7. type the reason to unlock like rooting, custom recovery usually, other... and valid your demand (My reason - Install custom rom and root it)
You'll get one sms to confirm that the demand is sent, then wait for 1-14day(s) the get 2nd sms for confirmation. (I have applied from 3 different accounts and got from all in 3 days
Sometimes you don't receive SMS, so just log to unlock site and check if you can download tool after some days. (Read it somewhere)
Notes :
- It is possible to make another device to receive the sms (your old device for example) and you don't need to have your SIM inside during unlock - the only one rule is to be logged with your right account with/using phone number in device AND in unlock tool !
- Keep in mind that the nickname could be a problem too : if it fails to log, type it without space or numbers.
- In the developer options >> Mi unlock status - Click add devices. If its done it's okay. IF NOT THEN IT'S ALSO OK. (I had 86012:some chinese letters error every time).
PROCESS
Like all other threads. If you are here You know it.
- go to i.mi.com and login with your unlock approved phone number. See find device and remove all except redmi note 4
- also in the main menu sign/in to activate all menus.
- Enable developer option. Select Oem unlock, USB debugging and USB debugging (Security settings).
Now here we go !!
1. Open command windows in your android sdk/ Minimal adb.
2. type adb devices ( Will show your attached devices.
3. Run Mi Unlock as admin
4. Login using your Mobile number !!!
5. In cmd window type adb reboot bootloader (mobile will boot to fastboot)
6. type fastboot devices (will show the same as adb devices)
7. Once in fastboot mode head over to MI Unlock tool. Click on Unlock
Profit!!!
I would thank Trahin from miui forum for a detailed guide.
Edit 1:
One of the user "zerodi" has advised to use ---flyvpn >> log into shanghai server>>dev options link account. It helped him. Post #30.
Adding this so that it might help sm1 who is still stuck
you dont need to goto a Dev Rom, however while on stable you do need to do the following steps
Goto Settings > About
keep Repeatedly clicking the MIUI version until it says you are now a developer.
Then goto settings >Additional Settings > "Developer Options" This is something new that would not have been there before.
Under Developer options tick the box that says OEM unlocking . Then use the MI Unlock tool and Voila!!!
Optional - There is also an option to check unlock status there, you can also go there and associate you MI account with this phone to avoid that dreadful error of a mismatch of account and device.
Well, its not as simple as this. I was able to unlock my Mi Max, but my RN4 which I got yesterday is again giving Couldnt verify device error even after following all these exact same steps which I had used to successfully unlock Mi Max Prime.
It really is a matter of luck and timing with Mi Unlock. Can be frustrating at times.
Edit : Nevermind, just realised I have to wait 30 days for different device to be unlocked on same ID. WTF!

This finally worked for me. I had one Mi account where I got unlock permission but no luck unlocking my phone after 2 weeks of trying everyday (stuck on 50%). I made a new Mi account and gave my forum nickname like you said when requesting unlock permissions and it worked!
I'm on the Redmi Note 4X with Global Rom Stable installed and I've been trying for 2 days to unlock the bootloader. I've tried everything I could find but it just gets stuck at "Couldn't verify device" on Mi Unlock, at 50%. I can't add the account in the developer settings as well, it gives me an error 10008. Any idea what I could do?

Yes you can use the same account as long as it has been 30 days between each unlock.
Also log into your Mi account & delete your RN3.

okay, thanks again. :good:
Iam waiting now 6 days for the second sms.
One thing i doenst understand: In op stand: !!! the thing asked in chinese in first window to access the demand is your forum nickname !!!
Example:Iam registered on miui and yy forums name is "test1001" and my name in setting (not the field real name!) is "test". But when i fill in the forums name "test1001" it gives me an error to put in the name.
When i put in my name "test" it was accepted but not my forums name.
When i go to the unlock page there stand now since 6 days: Submitted. Please wait for the review
Is it okay when i stay with the number as a name? Because in the Mi Forum i had my Mi Account number as a Name. At the device i set the number under the field "Name".
Until right now i couldn't unlock the bootloader, stuck at 50% (i got permissions and i'm on the latest china dev rom). So is the only way that i wait a couple of days and try again?
The next steps i want to test is to reset the phone to default - boot again and pass the device assistant (so don't log-in to Google + Miui account) - unlock developer options and than log-In to Miui account and try unlock over fastboot again. Hope that helps.
They only thing i want is flashing Lineage OS or Resurrection.
get my unlock permission yesterday night but cant unlock, stuck at 50%. Made all steps here and in liui forum with location etc. but no luck. EDL is also not possible on the SD625 Global version, not with software command and not with DF cable
Nickname is not acceptable.
While making request to unlock the bootloader on the first window I am providing Forum Nickname but I am getting error as incorrect name. Throughtout the account every name column i have updated as Forum Nickname.

The only definite solution for 50% account not same unlock error is to clean flash ROM by edl or fastboot mode and then use unlock tool. This worked well on redmi note 3.
With latest rom updates xiaomi has taken away all options to enter edl mode on redmi note 4.

Xiaomi MI Unlock - Can't unlock

Hello,
today i am trying to unlock my mi9t to install new applications via TWRP.
My MI account is 100% complete including the phone number entered. I downloaded the application miflash_unlock-en-3.5.719.27. But the veiling does not succeed. The phone is well detected, but it shows me a message that I can not translate saying "Could'not unlock" with an MI number different from mine.
I tried with a previous version of the software (which advised on other site) but still does not run miflash_unlock-en-2.3.803.10.
In the Dev options, I have enabled the OEM unlock, but I can not add my account the MI unlock status menu.
What do you think ? Thank you for your help.

Have you added your account on mi unlock status on developer options? If it says, couldn't verify device, then log out from your mi account and again log in. Then try adding your account on mi unlock status. It worked for me this way.
Is it a new phone? There's a mandatory wait period before you can unlock, I had to wait 7 days

I don't exactly know when it starts to count down honestly. Is there a number in the error message that the Mi unlock code shows you? It usually tells you the number of hours missing until unlock is possible. It wasn't in Chinese tho for me, it was in (broken) English

Unlock BootLoader (and lock again)

I would do some tests with TWRP/OF and maybe root it. Few questions:
a) Can I lock the bootloader once I decided to go with stock firmware?
b) do I need a real email for the MI account (that seems to be required to unlock)
Is this the right way to go?

Yes, I have done it. I unlocked the bootloader to install Magisk, but it was too difficult to update the phone with Magisk installed, so I used Mi Flash Tool to reflash the stock ROM and locked the bootloader.
(When the bootloader is locked, it will only boot if it the ROM is fully stock, do not lock the bootloader without reflashing the stock ROM.)

These are the steps for unlocking the bootloader.
1. You need to have a real email and a real phone number to create a Mi account.
2. Login the Mi account in the phone (with email address), go to settings, about phone, and tap MIUI Version (For POCO) 7 times to enable developer options.
3. In settings, go to more settings, developer options, and at there you can bind the Mi account to this phone (Mi Unlock status), you will need a real sim card with mobile data to do it.
4. After binding the Mi account to the phone, you need to wait for 15 days before you can unlock the bootloader. (7 days if you have enabled find device.)
5. Download Mi Unlock on your PC, and reboot the phone into fastboot mode (can be done with adb shell commands, or by long pressing the power and volume down buttons at the same time), unlock the phone with Mi Unlock, all data will be erased after unlocking the bootloader.
(If you have not waited for 15 days, or 7 days, during the unlocking process, Mi Unlock will tell you to wait. Unlocking the bootloader could be dangerous, it could brick the phone if something goes wrong, please be careful, backup your data, and make sure you know how to use Mi Flash to install the stock ROM if the phone gets soft bricked.)
Thank you - and for the warning about re-lock.
I need a phone number for unlock? And what is needed to lock - the same email and phone-nr? Or can this be done with a tip? Waiting for 15days is strange. A lot of time to think it over

You need a phone number (sim card with mobile data) to create the Mi account for unlocking and binding. To lock the bootloader after unlocking, an account is not required, you only need to choose "clean all and lock" in Mi Flash Tool.

There is no way to unlock it earlier using the official way.
It is because in China, Xiaomi phones did not have locked bootloader, unofficial sellers would install modified ROMs (with a lot of bloatware or malware) on Xiaomi phones, and sell those phones to people who did not know the ROM was modified.

It will become not certified with unlocked bootloader if you are using official ROM, and after relocking bootloader it will be certified.
But if you want to keep your bootloader unlocked and still want the phone to be certified, you can use the Xiaomi.eu custom ROM, or install Magisk in the official ROM and enable MagiskHide.

If you are installing the official fastboot ROM of a different region, you should be able to relock bootloader and the phone will still work. (As long as it is not the China version of hardware.)
Just use the tgz fastboot ROM file, extract it into a folder, and select that folder in Mi Flash, choose clean all and lock, and start flashing. (Make sure bootloader is unlocked before flashing.)
I have installed Taiwan ROM on the global version of both POCO M3 and Redmi 9T, after relocking bootloader, the phones still work without software problems.

No, the phone works well, all sensors still work, and with the MIUI dialer in Taiwan ROM, now I also have an option to record calls automatically.
It just feels the same as a phone that is from Taiwan.
tgz is the format of the compressed fastboot ROM file.
