Phone: VS995 Rooted running WETA rom + Werewolf Kernel.
Issue: Phone heavy CPU throttling when charging, gaming or even just booting. The CPU throttles to 652mhz on the small cluster and 1036mhz on the big cluster whenever I do something cpu intensive for a couple minutes. Obviously this causes a lot of stuttering and lag. I have to let it sit untouched and it will go back to normal.
I've monitored the temps and CPU doesn't go above 50c when playing games and my battery temp is below 25c. Even if the cpu temps go back down to 35c, it takes a while for the frequencies to ramp back up to max.
I'm using EX kernal manager and have disabled core_control and msm_thermal but doesn't help.
I've tried the stock WETA kernel and Werewolf kernel but they both don't seem to affect the heavy throttling at all.
Wondering if there is a kernel or a fix for this, kinda like the lg g3 thermal mitigation setting, or the CTTMOD found on other devices? Or maybe my device needs to replace thermal paste?
Thanks!

I've noticed this as well on WETA but only when charging. For some reason on WETA on stock kernel this phone slows down dramatically when plugged in. I just thought it was LGs method of thermal control but on MEGAROM V4 it doesn't slow down at all for me when plugged in so idk but would like to know how to fix cause I have it plugged in during driving a lot and switching back and forth between music and navigation becomes frustrating because of how laggy it gets

Yes! That's exactly what I'm experiencing too.
Having it plugged in throttles the cpu immediately. Doesn't matter if it's a quick charger or a slow charger. The battery and CPU temps are both low so that's not an issue. Even when it reaches 100% battery and just trickle charging, it still throttles randomly.
I'll start a different rom and see if it helps.

Yeah I recommend MEGAROM V4 although I'm on the T-Mobile H918 variant and not sure if there are any discrepancies to be accounted for but give it a shot and see
Having the same issue
My phone always stay Cool even when charging but cpu frequencies keep changing.
Even when i set the cpu max to 2105mhz it automatically slow down to 1036mhz , which makes the device super laggy and shuttering.
I've tried stock rom, weta, and some other roms and also tried some kernels nothing seems to be fixing the issue but Resurrection remix rom fixed it, no frequencies changing no lag no shuttering but i also has a problem that second screen doesn't work at all :/
yep same issues stock here.. just made a topic and realized you made this lol. stock rooted fwiw. I can't stand it. this phone has become such a lag fest that the galaxy s6 I was given for work seems faster, and that's two years old.

Not sure why but ever since I flashed release 7 of the faux kernel my phone just seemed to get really warm, now I don't know if i just never noticed it but I'm running Motley kernel now and my phone just gets warm at the top when installing apps. I'm not sure if I never noticed it and I'm starting too or if I have a problem, HELP? Thanks.
That's completely normal. When installing asps the CPU is being used. Also, the CPU governor being used and uv'ing affect the temperature. Also, the CPU is located at the top I'm guessing.

Hey, I'm wondering too ! Since i flashed the latest faux kernel (release 007m) , my phone seems to be warmer than usual. According to the system tuner widget the phone runs around 45°C after a few minutes of use and sometimes reaches almost 60°C while i do nothing special on my phone (a little browsing, sms). Despite the fact that I've downclocked the cpu to 1.35ghz, put the governor on intellidemand, disable mpdecision, UV 75 mV and running at the stock gpu clock. I don't know if this is normal but this seems to be a lot. What's gonna happen if I play games or some more intensive apps?
I know that overheating in nexus 4 is common problem, but today after installing custom ROM CyanogenMod 10.1 my phone has started overheating more quickly. Is anybody know any solution of it?

overheating i doubt, what was the cpu and battery temperature? just because it feels warm, doesnt mean its overheated. when it actually overheats, first the cpu will lower in cpu speed(safety), then if that doesnt help itll shutdown. is the weather around you warm btw?
+1 @simms22
Also, if it's really getting to warm your phone would run unstable.

Thanks for your replay, I still don't understand why my mobile has started getting warmer more quickly ever since I've installed custom rom. I've hardly played any graphics intensive game on it so far.
I don't know from where to know cpu and battery temperature. Do I need to install any application from playstore? Weather around here is warm. On average 35-40 degree temperature.
My phone CPU reaches 70˚C and battery 50˚C when driving in my car, charing with gps on a this time of the year(hot as hell here as well).
Everything seems to be find, didn't even turn itself yet so I doubt theres anything to worry about.
My gf forgot her phone in the car stand in the sun for a few hours, when she came back it wouldn't turn on until it was cooler so you can be sure your phone can take care of itself.
Maybe your governor was changed when you flashed the ROM, depending on the governor (like performance) your cpu clock speed may be increased more often then with the original governor.
You can check your governor with apps like no-frills cpu or setcpu and check the temperatures with cpu z

its easier to use an app for battery and cpu temp. being 35-40C around you, id expect the phone to be warm most of the time. anyways, after installing a custom rom your device spends a lot of time syncing stuff. so itll be a little warmer than normal. after about a full battery cycle it should stop, and will be a little cooler. also, a reboot after several hours after a rom flash should help a little too.
Ok, thanks for your quick response.
So I disabled the DVFS feature which I heard was some kind of thermal control but now the phone is unbelievably hot after intensive gaming session. For example I played xcom for 30 minutes and the phone felt like frying and the battery went down from 86% to 48%. I didn't have any cpu monitor so I don't know what temperature it was on, but it felt very hot. Is this safe? I personally think it isn't and I will probably turn DVFS back on.
I have a n9005 device, running xnote v15 and lean kernel 2.5.1 with default settings.
From what I gathered, DVFS was Samsung's "cheat" to enable awesome scores in Antutu and other apps that measured how well the CPU, etc worked... Disabling DVFS should in actuality leave it cooler as the CPU's/other aren't being artificially throttled up to maximum...
Correct me if I'm wrong...

Isn't the dvfs stock kernel related?

No its TouchWiz system based. You can set it in Wanam Xposed.
It may sound like it's related with the kernel, but the kernel does not see what is being run on the device (especially only benchmarking tools) and then ramps up the device to perform better than expected.

I am currently running the PureNexus rom with ElementalX kernel while also underclocking the CPU but I still seem to run into throttling issues. What are you guys doing to help keep your 810 cool enough not to throttle but still maintaining buttery smooth performance?
Thanks
Not doing anything on mine. I haven't gone and focused on benchmarks or anything that has caused me to notice throttling on my device. Seems to work quite well and performance always seems buttery smooth while I'm using it.

Nothing, I've seen no reports of thermal throttling and no issues myself
If you are using Ex Kernel Manager, under the CPU section, you can adjust the Thermal Throttling temperature in Celsius. I have no experience with adjusting it though.

can you share your underclocking settings? there's no discussion about it in the exkernel thread.
also, did you figure out anything that helps with the heat? it's really well documented that this phone does throttle like crazy, so not sure what everyone saying it's just fine is talking about.
"it’s required to throttle to about 50% of its peak performance for most of the duration of the test to maintain reasonable skin temperatures" http://www.anandtech.com/show/9820/the-google-nexus-6p-review/6
Delete thermal.conf file in system>etc I believe. Disable msm_thermal and core_control in the elementx app. No more throttling. My phone has gotten hot time to time but nothing to where I have reboots.

i don't have a thermal.conf file in that directory, but there is a thermal-engine.conf. What does deleting it do?
Also, I've found that if msm_thermal is on and core_control is off, then I get reboots while using android auto (phone call+maps+waze+charging for about 20 - 50 minutes). If I keep core_control on, then it doesn't overheat. Also, with just msm_thermal on, and core_control off, I've found that gaming performance degrades, while with core_control on, it doesn't.
So I appreciate the advice, but I need some more discussion/explanation of what exactly that would do. Like if I turned both msm_thermal and core_control off, is there something that would prevent the phone from over heating?
Hello everyone,
Always i have searched all internet before writing this post.
My LG G6 H870 have strange behaviour.
Actually i am using open oreo v20g installed by TWRP . I have magisk and mk2000 kernel, but tried also Beast , and Marshall. I tried also back to stock with KDZ file.
Problem is that after running CPU Throttling app i can see temperatures and frequency.
After boot it shows sometimes that frequency go to max 2,35 GHz on 2 cores, and 2,18 GHz on other 2. Temperature is 35*C per core. Performance shows at start over 100 GIPS and is going down to 70-80 GIPS.
One moment later, or after Next reboot after running test, cpu frequency go to MAX 1,05 GHz on all cores even temperature is 23*C on cores. It shows 50 GIPS and.
Dry performance test is not problem, but i feeleing a low performance at systemy interface and web browser - its laggy.
Antutu shows below 100 000 points.
I tried kernel adiutor to set frequency, but on any kernel its not possible, becouse if i set frequency itd changes itself after while to random frequency.
Tried to change governor for example Performance, but frequencies never go over 1,3-1,4 GHZ.
Temperatures never go over 40 at idle. Phone body is not.
Do You have any ideas where is the problem and what can i do? Frewuencies are totally random at stress or higher usage of cpu.
Thank You very much
Here's screen shot of test. Straight Green Line is frequency 1,05GHz at testing
I did a full back to stock with LG UP and Uppercut with v20a KDZ firmware. I locked bootloader by Tool all in one, By OTA firmware updated to v20g. Problem gone, everytime i can See over 100 GIPS in test and device seems to work like a charm.
Thanks

It's looks like the problem is with hardware. On stock V20g, and now also on V20h problem still persist. It's totally random. Now i am on locked bootloader, stock kernel and sometimes frequencies locks at 1,05 GHz even if temperature of cores at test start are between 25-30*C on with CPU Throttling test app. Phone still lags sometimes.

You know i noticed something like that too, sometimes the phone runs fine but sometimes I'd be doing some really simple activity and it just heats up and lags and also ram is getting eaten on the stock ROM.

On stock i disabled many stock and system apps with LG Package disabler, and phone never gets Hot. Only when testing or doing heavy tasks. Ram is also normal. I recommend disable bloatware and unused not critical apps.
My problem is that phone can't be even warm when heavy apps are computing.
I didn't found a solution, but i noticed, that is it linked with charger.
When battery is below 50%, cpu clock very fast jumping from 1,05 to 2,34 GHz and then the performance is near 60 GIPS. After connecting charger CPU frequency is stable at 2,34 GHz and throttle is lowering frequency to 1,05 GHz and stay at this frequence even a temperature is low after while. After disconneting charger, frequency is going higher and higher. I attached screenshot when is it visible.
When battery is over 50%, cpu frequency is stable at 2,34 GHz, performance is near 100 GIPS and is lowering with throttle, but when i connect charger, frequencies are unstable and performance falls to 60 GIPS.
In summary, there wasn't problem with kernel, or software. I think there is problem with hardware, but i don't know how to diagnose problem.

Thanks for help, but under or overclocking not working. Tried to change clock by max 50mV but without success. I tested more today and problem starts below 70% battery level. It's about 3,8V of battery.
I also tried disable cores. After disabling 1 of 4 cores (no matter which one) clock were jumping from high to low. After disabling 2 of 4 the problem dissapears and clocks are high as it should be, but only on 2 cores. It looks like phone don't have enough power to deliver energy to high intensity SoC usage. I'm going to try dissassemble and assemple motherboard and battery again, maybe connector is not fit good, after sim tray repair.

I don't advise that but go ahead and does this happen on every ROM or no
Any update? My phone does the same. Is this problem battery or thermal related?
