Hi,
does anyone know if it is possible to *unset* a special ringtone for a contact?
I had a special ringtone for a contact, but I cannot configure this contact to go back to the "default, systemwide" ringtone. And as I have a tasker task that switches from a loud ringtone to a silent one, simply setting the contact to the same ringtone that I have systemwide will not help. If I change the system ringtone, the custom ringtone for the contact will not change. (For the oneplus 3, I saw screenshots with a "default" entry which is missing now)

hmm deleting app data for the phone app did not help
Maybe you can paste the music in, sdcard/ringtone
---------- Post added at 10:08 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:36 PM ----------
You have to be root and paste the file in the root of the phone in system/media/audio/ringtones and put the same permissions as the other Ringtones rw-r--r--

That doesn't solve the problem, it's not about setting a specific ringtone. Rather, I had a contact with a special, custom ringtone and I cannot find a way to make this special contact "normal" again (ie so that it doesn't have a special ringtone but just the normal, systemwide one). It keeps being special with an own ringtone. I even deleted the contact in Google and recreated it, but somehow the phone recognized that it had the same number or email address and it had the special ringtone again...
I have a choice for none and that resets the ringtone to the system default.

it doesn't for me. If I set the custom ringtone for a person to none and the systemwide ringtone is, eg "oneplus tune" and that particular person calls me, the phone stays silent even when the alarm slider is "loud'.
Furthermore, if my system ringtone is "oneplus tune" and I open a regular contact (for which I had never set a custom ringtone before) and to the custom ringtone form it shows me the "oneplus tune" as active (and not "none"). From this, I'd say that "none" simply means an empty, silent ringtone which is, nevertheless, a ringtone which can be custom...
Yep, you're right.
It always reports what the systemwide ringtone in that field. Based on your information, it seems the ringtone is stored with the default number of the contact by the sounds of it. I tested it and got same result. I had to set the ringtone to match the system.

I checked my contacts in Google and found no ringtone information anywhere, so it must be stored somewhere on the phone. Even deleted the affected contact and created it as new, but as soon as I entered the phone number, the custom ringtone was back :-\
Don't know where to look where this information might be stored locally. Already deleted app data for the phone app and the contacts app, no luck so far

All you need to do is go to your contacts, tap on the contact, click menu, tap edit. Find ring tone on the long list of options, tap where it says ring tone, select one from the pop-up. This same procedure is used for assigning pictures to contacts, also.
Here's a screen shot of the page you need to be on.
I think he is talking about assigning ringtones to "private numbers" and not the ones already in his contacts!
Simple solution

When you get one of the calls, Private Name, Private Number...just add it to your contacts, then set a ringtone for it.
Simple solution.

It may be a complete shot in the dark, but have you tried adding a registry entry for "UnknownCaller"?? e.g.
Code:
HKCU/ControlPanel/Sounds/[b]Unknown[/b]CallerRing0/
You might need a soft reset or power off to force that key to be re-read by the phone service (Cprog.exe)....
Give it a try, what's the worst that can happen
Mark.
u could go 3rd party and use something like photo contacts pro

Looked at every thread in Q&A and didn't see anything addressing this. While I can set a default ringtone, I can't set a specific ringtone for each contact. In the Contact Details screen, there's an Options/Ringtone that you can click, but changing it doesn't do anything. Anyone figure this out or is it just a bug?

I can on mine, I just select the contact, and LOOK AT BOTTOM OF CONTACT INFO, I can assign a SPECIFIC ringtone to that contact ONLY...
if this option is not there by default, EDIT the contact and the option might appear at bottom of contact info...
I have my wifes number set to tone locs "Wild Thing..."
It looks like the problem was that I was syncing contacts from TMobile. For whatever reason you can't modify the ringtone, not sure if this is only a problem with Tmobile syncing or all syncing. You also can't modify ringtones on the TMobile website. So I exported contacts to my SD card, then imported back in. Now it works.
I have a stock Nexus 4, currently with Android 4.2.2. I haven't yet installed the new update.
One of my Contacts is "Block," to which I add incoming calls that I want to block, such as telemarketers. When I set it up, I changed the ringtone for that contact to "None," so that it would not ring, or rather, that I would not hear the ring.
Today I learned that the device will not save "None" as a ringtone choice. I change the ringtone to None and click OK, but when I check the ringtone again, it has reverted to the default.
When I tested the function by changing the ringtone to the next option on the list, "Andromeda," it retained that setting. The problem appears to be isolated only to the ringtone "None."
I would appreciate any suggestions how to get it to save that ringtone, or alternately, how else to banish unwanted callers. Many thanks.
Maybe create a custom ringtone with nothing but silence, copy it your phone, and use that as a default for the blocked calls?

Thanks. I was thinking of a version of that - creating a silent custom ringtone and renaming it to one of the ringtones that functions (like Andromeda or whatever), which I don't use anyway. I think I'll try your way first.
There's always the coward's way out - if I get too frustrated I'm just going to reset everything to factory default and start adding apps again slowly.
Thanks! Season's greetings :good:

HI,
Can you just send that person or entry straight to voicemail instead of worring about the ringtone? Usually telemarketers wont leave voicemail.
I have set a general ringtone for anyone phoning me. I want to set individual tones for my family.
I have set up their contacts with tones I have set, but when they ring me, I only get the general ringtone, even though their contact is set to the one I've chosen.
Clear?
Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks.

Songs or sound must be on internal memory!
Big question...
I'm using Priv (with Marshmallow) and after setting a custom ringtone for individual contacts, it doesn't work.
Funny thing is, the setting for a general ringtone works normally.
So, I've set the ringtones in Contacts - Edit - Set ringtone - Selected and confirmed (the preview plays normally).
When I get a call from that person it just plays the general ringtone and not the one set for the contact. I don't have any phone contacts or SIM contacts, they are all from Google.
I've also tried clearing cache and data for Contacts, restarting the phone ... and I've run out of ideas.
Help me please!
