No Gmail Notification When in Sleep Mode - OnePlus 5 Questions & Answers

Hi guys,
I have a problem with Gmail notifications, they are not showing until I unlock my phone. I know it has to do with Doze, so I went to the Battery Optimization menu to try turning off optimization but Gmail app is not present in that list.
Is anyone else has problems with notifications? How do I turn off battery optimization for Gmail App on stock OnePlus 5?

It isn't visible for me.

I concur, Gmail is not visible on the battery optimization list for me either. However, Inbox appears on the list.

Thanks for the replies.
Yeah, it seems that only apps installed from Google Play appear on Battery Optimization list.
Does anyone have a problem of missed Gmail notifications?

I get this as well both in my 3t and 5

I've disabled Doze in developer options and it seems the issue is solved, at least so far. With Greenify handling app hibernation I am not seeing much of a battery drain (and I have WiFi/LTE constantly on).

I've disabled Doze too and now the issue is gone. I have WiFi/LTE always on and I don't see any side effects for battery life, it is still good. So, that seems to be a solution.
Thanks, everybody!

Hello everyone. Ive been also having no Gmails after my OP5 screen is off after a few minutes. So I also went to battery optimization list to turn Gmail off from dozing. But it wasnt there. So I had to turn off Doze completely to get it to work. I did however figure out a way to keep Doze on and found a way to add Gmail to that list using a 3rd party app shortcut maker. But for me this didnt work. I still did not get Gmails despite it being exempt from the battery optimizations. But if someone wants to know how I was able to add it to that list let me know. Its not hard, and doesnt require root.

OK. What I did was use an app called QuickShortcutMaker to start to create a shortcut. Then in the search field I just typed "battery" and looked for the "Settings" section and there you should see "battery optimization". Select that, then select test shortcut. It should open the same "Battery optimization" as before, but will show many more apps then it does normally. Then you can go in there and change as many as you want. Let me know if you figure it out. Going by memory here. Hope that helps.

I have the same problem on OP5. Stock and modified ROMS. Developer options problem?

Just an update. I updated to 4.5.7 and got a Gmail update. Neither fixed it. Ive been in contact with the Oneplus bug hunters and I was told they would look into it. But for now the only way I get Gmails after the screens been off for about an hour is to keep Doze off completely, or wake up the screen. Also just updated to 4.5.8 and doubt anything was fixed as far as this issue goes.

If you have root, uninstall gmail with titanium backup and reinstall true Playstore , after that you probably have it visible in battery optimisation.

I was able to add Gmail to the not battery optimized list by using a shortcut creator that gave me the full list of apps. But this did not fix the issue where Gmails stop coming through after about 45 mins or so with the screen off. So I had to turn Doze all the way off.

I am experiencing same issue but with facebook messenger. Had no problem on 4.5.3 . Decided to update to 4.5.6 and no more notifications during sleep :/

Hi evryone, first post for me on this forum!
You are telling that turn off Doze solved the problem. Ok I want to do that!
I'm french and I don't find any Doze item in the developer menu. The only item which can correspond is "Mode somnolence" but it is already turn off!
Gmail notifications are very important for me. I'm very disappointed, it's a basic feature!!
Just one remark: I have 3 Google accounts, do you believe it can be a problem?

Hello!
And at me on OP5 with notifications from Gmail the same problems. I contacted the developers and provided them with the logs of working with this error. No answer so far. But, promised to understand. All the above solutions are not valid. It remains only to wait and hope.

Unable to install apps from unknown sources

Does anyone have the problem of being unable to install apps from sources other than the play store? For example, atm I'm trying to update 'Lucky Patcher' and the request for me to install the update which also shows the permissions the app is requesting but I can't actually press on the Install button. I can still press on the show all button and cancel button as well as the touchscreen keys at the bottom but just cant press on the Install button.
I was able to install unknown source apps before however, it just doesnt work now.
How do i fix this?

Please explain how you did it. After a lot of searching on my own I found someone's advice to set the brightness to max and disable any screen dimming apps (which I have none installed, bought the device a month ago) and I still can't install apk files. Mind you the appropriate setting to allow unknown sources is set. The Install button just doesn't react exactly as you described. Everything else on the popup window is active (permissions and such). Please help!
Has anyone else encountered this problem?
I had this problem 2 months back. It turned out that the screen filter app that I was using was leading to this. I turned the app off and it worked
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
I sat down and killed all the apps one by one. It turned out Battery Mix's battery bar (1px battery level indicator on the very top of the screen) was causing this behaviour. I will report this to the dev. So problem solved! :good:
Yeah, for my Nexus 4 the culprit was Juice Defender's brightness control. Disabled that and was able to install the apk I wanted to install. The developer does warn that this setting "might not work or cause problems".
Thank You All!!!!
Once again I was quickly able to solve my problem with a quick search on your forums!! Thank you all for giving such great advice. My problem with not being able to press the install button ended up being the "Twilight" App. Simple to temp disable/enable so not a big deal to me. I'm also going to let them know over at Twilight so hopefully a future update will solve this problem.
Thanks!!

what the heck is screen overlay detected on axiom 7

It about stops me from doing uploading pictures, downloading. It's driving me crazy anyone else having this problem?
Yea lots of people are. Anything that changes the status of the screen like some kind of screen filter like twilight, night owl, any of those things, can mess with this. It's been pretty annoying. I have Twilight set to a timer to eliminate blue light on the screen before sleeping and I have to freeze and defrost it several times a day. Apparently it's an issue with ZTE. There is a thread over there about it.

I guess that it should actually be a security feature to prevent an overlay app from abusing any open apps below it... but it is really annoying that the ZTE integrated feature Mi-POP will also make this warnings display... you can simply deactivate it through its notification bar shortcut but it's still annoying...

Screen overlay is new in 6.0 to prevent apps from creating an overlay and giving permissions to themselves. It's not an issue with ZTE.
Yes screen overlay is new. Came from a N6 and never had this problem on stock 6.0 from Google. Facebook messenger will not do anything other than message can't call, or send pictures. Yes it is a problem with ZTE

Go to the "Apps" setting, and then click on the "gear-shaped" setting button to go to the "Draw over other apps" menu and turn off all apps that are enabled. Go back to the "Apps" setting and click on the app that needs permissions modified. When all the permissions are updated, go back and enable the "Draw over other apps" for those apps you disabled.
Use this app it will get rid of that annoying overlay issue.

WhatsApp notification settings - sound without vibrating does not work

Hi All, I'm struggling to turn off the vibrating notification for WhatsApp messages. I can either turn off vibrating within the general notification preferences for ALL messages or keep them on. The options within the WhatsApp settings do not work. Any ideas to solve this issue would be highly appreciated :good: Thanks
Turn off vibrations in whatsapp, then set a new sound for notification there as well.
Thx for your reply. The phone doesn't accept the ringtone change as well.
That's weird, it's working without vibration here when i do get a notification. My problem is often i don't get the notification at all, until i wake the app by opening it.
Agree, very weird. It's not clear for me which settings overrule others, which permissions have to be set and how the power saving options might influence the notifications probably.
I thought I have tried everything already but without success so far. The phone is driving me crazy. Already miss my oneplus which I passed over to my gf.
I'm also having troubles with my notifications since today... Getting nothing unless i open the app.. Very frustrating! Think its the 18s rom.. All notifications are on..I don't get it..
Had the problems already before the upgrade to 18s.
I found some Indian threads concerning notification problems in EUI 5.8 but the workarounds did not avail in my case.
Probably you want to give it a try -->

None of these tips worked for me. I have every setting to keep apps open and protected with permissions...etc etc. I can still have my other phones sitting right next to this one and a gmail message will come in to all of them except the Le Pro 3. It will just sit there and not see the new message until I open the app and manually refresh. Le Eco MUST fix this. What good is a device that does not work with push notifications!!????
All of a sudden, at least whatsapp does as expected - sound without vibration (without turning off the general phone vibration settings) and also setting other notification sounds works now. - The problem is - I really don't know how I achieved this great success
I'll check how the other notifications work now and give feedback.
I've found that notifications work fairly well after a reboot, but get steadily worse the longer you go without rebooting. Mine has been a running a few days now without a reboot and whatsapp gets kicked out of settings/running apps within minutes of using it.
I'm also having problems with the notifications in general. Gmail and Hangouts for example...
I tried Settings ->Battery->Power Saving Management and disabled everything, including Ultralong standby and lock-screen clean up. Also add to App protection Wahtsapp and more applications that I don't want to be frozen. Neither Gmail nor Hangouts show on this list.
Also, I locked Gmail and Hangouts in the EUI task manager (lock symbol) , but it appears to have no effects...
Gmail for example besides no notifications, the emails in inbox are not even refreshed...
Any help would be appreciated... I really like the phone, but I'm thinking of returning it because these issues...
The same thing is present on our LeMax 2 for months since the S16/S17 update on it, other Leeco users report the same with their later firmwares.
I think it's deliberate by leeco to lengthen battery time for review reports, and they have no intention of fixing it since the complaints on various forums have been numerous for months now.
I found this:
http://forum.le.com/in/index.php?th...il-etc-after-eui-5-8-017s-update.15539/page-4
1. Phone manager -> Power saving management->App protection->Disable auto cleaning for WhatsApp
2. Settings -> Permission -> You have allowed x apps to auto launch->enable WhatsApp
3. Settings -> Notification management -> WhatsApp->enable all
4. Phone manager>Power saving management>App battery usage alert>Never alert > whatsapp should be never alert
5. Make Sure the Apps are locked in Recent Apps. Lock means the app won’t be killed by system.
6. Third-party power management apps such as DU Battery Saver, Greenify, Battery Extender, CM Security, Battery Saver, Go Battery, Doze etc. restrict background data and thus result in delayed notification and errors
7. If still cannot receive the push message, please check whether Battery assistant is enabled. Battery assistant will restrict backgroud data and only suggest to enable when battery is low.
8. Dial *#*#46360000#*#* -> Uncheck “Enable background resource control”. And please check it after next OTA. It can help save battery.

Going on 5 hours and it has not missed a single push...I think this was the golden ticket to fix the push issues.
K, after 2 days testing, the new fix certainly seems to work at least for the 2 apps i use with push notifications, gmail and whatsapp. With gmail i still have to have the lock symbol on recents, which means to exempt it from memory purges in standby, but whatsapp doesn't seem to even need that anymore.
I've also been keeping an eye on battery consumption with this fix and, once settled from the reboot after applying the fix, there is no noticeable extra battery drain as far as i can tell. I'm still getting awesome SOT.

Titanium Backup schedules not executed

Is anyone else having the issue of TB schedules not being executed when the phone is sleeping? I have set all the Battery Optimizations set to manual for both TB and the TB root key app. Sometimes the scheduled task is started when I wake up the phone and sometimes (at night) it's being ignored entirely. I am on rooted Oreo stock but I saw the same on Nougat.

It's a system setting, somewhere under the Battery settings. I am not on EMUI anymore, so I can't tell you exactly. However, it didn't fix my problem permanently. I have moved on to LineageOS meanwhile, where these problems don't exist anymore.

Unfortunately it does not work in my Xiaomi redmi Note 4X.
I found the option to activate "Ignore Battery Optimizations", however if I don't leave the Titanium backup PRO running, the scheduled backups are not performed.
Last week I have been searching internet for a solution, however still I have not found a satisfactory one.
Kind regards and thanks for your advice,

<deleted - see next post for updated info>
Titanium Backup schedules not executed (or interrupted after being started) and/or its related notifications not being shown appears to be an issue that is caused by crazy additional 'features' as implemented at some devices to improve battery life. This especially happens at OnePlus devices running Oreo (Android 8), but may possibly also appear at devices of other brands (Xiaomi?). Therefore it actually isn't a shortcoming of Titanium Backup itself, but the result of some stupid app handling and killing behaviors that may be active at your device.
Also other apps that should permanently be kept running in background may be impacted by this behavior (being killed for the same reason) like Tasker, Sync-to-cloud apps, etc.
Especially at OnePlus devices running Oreo, following implemented crazy 'optimization' behaviors are playing a role here:
After a user has set Battery optimisation OFF for a specific app, it may automatically be set ON again after a reboot or after the app was updated
Background services may be killed EVEN when for the related app the Battery optimisation was set OFF
The 'Autostart' attribute may be ignored, so apps may be NOT automatically started in background after rebooting your device
SOLUTION
1. Make sure the 'Advanced optimisation' options are disabled
Go to Settings > Battery > Battery optimisation
Click the 3 dots in the upper-right corner and select 'Advanced optimisation'
Verify that the options 'Advanced optimisation' and 'Sleep standby optimisation' are both disabled
2. Set Battery optimisation OFF for any app that should continue to run in background
Go to Settings > Battery > Battery optimisation
Select the app that should never be killed, so in this example: 'Titanium Backup'
Select 'Don't optimize' and click DONE
Nb.
Above is not needed for the 2nd entry 'Titanium Backup PRO', which is just related to your PRO key payment and not the running Titanium Backup process itself.
However, disabling Battery optimization for an app is NOT enough for preventing that it could be killed when running in background at OnePlus devices!
This not only because the 'Don't optimize' setting may automatically be reverted to 'Optimize' after a reboot or after an update of the app, but EVEN when Battery optimisation is actually disabled it's nevertheless still candidate for being killed at OnePlus devices running Oreo! Therefore also next action is required in addition.
3. Lock the app in your 'Recent Apps' list
Open and then close Titanium Backup (or just touch the Home button at your device after opening the app)
Touch the 'Recent Apps' button at your device
This shows your recent apps, where Titanium Backup will now be included (as last / most recent entry)
Toggle the 'Lock' icon in the upper right corner of that Titanium Backup entry, to switch it to a closed lock icon symbol
(see attached screenshot)
This last action not only just prevents that the app could be removed from your 'Recent Apps' list, but it ALSO prevents the issues as described above, so:
The app will not be killed anymore when running in background
The 'Battery optimisation' setting for that app will not be reverted anymore to 'Optimize' after a reboot or after an update of the app
When done, Titanium Backup schedules should now run as defined. Also, its completion messages shouldn't disappear from your notification entries anymore, but kept until you remove them.
OTHER APPS
Because it's not just a specific Titanium Backup issue but the result of the stupid behavior as implemented at OnePlus devices running Oreo, it's highly recommended to repeat the steps above for any app that should never be killed when running in background (eg. Tasker, Sync-to-cloud apps, Alarm/Alert apps, etc.). Also apps that are making use of scheduled actions, or should awake at incoming messages, chats, mails, alarms, or Security/Anti-virus apps etc. could be candidate of not being able to react properly because they were killed when running in background and/or not started at boot. When such apps doesn't always correctly react/awake at your device, just perform same actions as described above to prevent them to be killed. When an app still doesn't work because it wasn't auto-started at boot, you could use Tasker to create a Tasker-profile that executes a Tasker-task to launch such apps at boot. Start-at-boot via Tasker appears to be not required for Titanium Backup, but for some other apps this was my only option to ensure that they were auto-started after a reboot of my device.
Nb.
Some apps have options included in their internal settings like 'Keep active in background', 'Run in Foreground' or 'Turn off battery optimisation'. Even when these types of internal app settings are selected, they could still be killed at some device brands (eg. OnePlus) when the actions as described above aren't implemented in addition for such apps.
OnePlus: Never settle, but also never be so stubborn...
Thanks
Much appreciated for the fix.
Never thought about locking the app, great idea ?
Just stumbled over this post through a link. Many thanks for the info; in my case it's not only TB that's effected but also several other apps like OruxMaps and Automagic.
For completeness I post some screenshots from OnePlus 6 / OOS 9.0.4 (Pie) showing the changed recent apps screens and dialogs (in German, but I guess you'll get the picture)

i was wondering why titanium is not executed in months.. and killed shortly even when i run it manually.
settings were great:
- no battery optimization
- no data optimization
- tons of free memory on RAM boasting 1+ (funny isn't it)
- recent app management=normal clear
- standby check=exempted
- keep activities
- deep optimization turned off
- sleep standby optimization turned off
and still it didn't help until i LOCKed the app. this is why 1+ and xiaomis achieve better battery scores than samsung

(Spoiler: heavy OT post)
...which is what I really love about my 1+: 3 - 4 days between charging aren't rare here.
For the very few apps that are having probs (like track recording) with heavy battery optimization I wrote myself a script (am using automagic, but this should be also possible with Tasker etc) to disable deep opt. then start my critical app. Works great for me, but as always: ymmv

Your screenshot shows the app settings. You need to bring up the "recents" screen instead. If you're using the standard navigation bar that is the square button at the right end of the nav bar (screenshot #1, blue mark).
Then you flip through your recently opened apps until you find the one you're looking for. From then on it's as I described before: tap the 3 dots (screenshot #1, red mark). in the pop up menu select the "lock" entry (screenshot #2, green mark)

Thanks - got it. When I read about "recents" in this thread earlier, I assumed it was when you go to Settings > Apps and you're first shown a list of recent apps. I've now got what everyone is talking about, thanks to your patient explaining. I'm sure this will help others too. On my phone, there's no nav bar it's all done with gestures, so you swipe up from the bottom of the screen - then lock Titanium in place. Bingo, and thank you.

Notifications Issues Post Oreo Update

Hi,
Anyone experienced a problem with push notifications on Oreo? I've updated and now some apps are not giving me notifications.
Hangouts and Wordfued are the two I have experienced so far.
If you open the apps up and then go back to the home screen the notifications work. If you close them fro the app switcher screen they stop providing notifications.
Thanks

More severe problem with whatsapp while the screen is off...
I found a way to get my tumblr notifications to work even after I've closed the app to stop it running in the background. It's not ideal, but until they release an official fix... Meh. Hopefully this works for you guys, too?

Settings (The cog icon at the bottom)
Special Access
Ignore Battery Optimisation
Find your app and switch to Allow
And... done!
Again, I hope this works for you too.
It's strange because I still get twitter notifications despite not having to go through this for that app. Hmmn.
Does anyone know how to change the default notification sound for Twitter? It used to be in the settings under push notifications- it would let you select the tone, now it isn't there. I can't find the option in phone settings either- I have 8.0.0.369 (C432).

There is a number of guides online, none of which I've got to work. I think the bottom line is, you can't any more.

Over time all the apps that were not working have started working fine. Not sure if that is down to it knowing which apps to keep open or software updates or something else.
Apologies I can't help more.
