I'm sorry for having to post here, I'm a new XDA member and I've just started using my tablet and found out I can't post in the dev section. I'm not sure how else to get help and a previous boyfriend told me the xda-developers community was a great place so I thought I would try here.
I have the Nexus 7 (2013 edition) and I used WUG's method of rooting - everything went perfectly, but now I'm getting a notification that there is an update (an OTA update - I think that's what they are called?) and it doesn't apply. I'm not sure if I should have, but I did the bootloader unlock and installed a new recovery (TWRP - I think that's how it's spelled?. sorry again)...
Anyway.... At this point my tablet is working great, but I constantly see this notification for an update and I'm not sure what to do.. It says "touch to install" and I've done that but it just boots into my new recovery. If anybody has access to WUG in the dev forum, could you please ask him what I should do?
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do you have the WiFi only version or the LTE version? Also, under your settings -> about phone, what build number are you currently on? Since you have rooted and installed a custom recovery, OTA updates will not install correctly. You have a couple of options in this regards, and I or someone will go over them once we figure out what version you are running.

Thanks for that:
Here's what you can do to install the update.
1) go to this thread and download either the odexed or deodexed version.
2) Reboot to recovery
3) Wipe Cache/Dalvik Cache
4) Flash the .zip file you just downloaded
5) Reboot your updated tablet.
OR
You can read here and try this.

Oh railed, thankyou so much - I was not sure if I would be able to get any more updates. If I do that, will it delete everything on my tablet? It did that when I did the change to an unlocked bootloader, and I had to reload everything.

All your data will be preserved. Only Wipe the Cache/Dalvik Cache, not the Data. Before you install go to Wipe -> Advance -> Check only Cache and Dalvik Cache.
Typically when an update comes out, someone will post a flashable update within a couple of hours so we can install them as well. Hope it helps.
Edit: As always before flashing anything, make a backup, by rebooting into recovery and selecting Backup (i check all the boxes).

Also.... If I just load the latest cyanogenmod on it, will that take care of it. I have the same old phone from my previous boyfriend and it's running cyanogenmod.. It will update the OS whenever a new version comes out and I don't lose the data like I did with the unlock bootloader thing?

I believe so, Cyanogenmod usually merges the updates pretty quickly into the code and you won't get any update notifications from Google directly any more. There are only nightly releases so far for this device if you feel like going that route.

Do you think I should go the cyanogenmod route?
I've really liked cyanogenmod on the phone on barnes&noble device they are on, but I've been scared to update this tablet since we've broken up and I don't have anybody that can help.

That's completely up to you and what you prefer... I like the stock android experience so far, but there are many options out there for custom ROMs besides CM. Take a look here and here and figure out if a ROM in there has something you want... the great thing about this is if you don't like it, flash something else until you find exactly what you like... that's how I plan to do it, once the ROMs get more stable with the 4.3 updates.

I use deodexed, as do a lot of people who like to customize. There's not a lot of difference between the two. Here is an article that explains it pretty well: Odexed vs Deodexed

Hello everyone, I'm new in this forum.
First of all, I'm sorry for my English and for any grammatical errors.
After the last Offer on nexus 4, I decided to buy one, I'd be intent on root the device and install the ROM AOSPA Paranoid because I read that for devices nexus is the maximum.
Can you show me some simple guides regarding how to root the Nexus 4, and install the ROM AOSPA Paranoid, step by step, without risk of brick the phone?
Thanks in advance!

First read this if you're new to this:

Then proceed by following this guide:

Use this guide to unlock bootloader and install a custom recovery (TWRP): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2266654
You dont need to root your phone because PA comes prerooted. Then download PA + GApps, and boot into recovery. Go to the wipe menu, swipe to factory reset, then go to install, and choose the PA rom you download, then the Gapps, then reboot.
Edit: abaaaabbbb63 beat me

What can I say, I'm a fast typer
Now the op has 2 guides to choose from.
Thank you, albeit slowly, I will try to read both guides and understand them.
"Understanding the world before rooting your Android LG Nexus 4" I think it is very useful.
I'm not sure I understand it well, so the two guides are equivalent?
One other question, once installed the AOSPA 3 +, each time a new update comes out I have to reinstall start from the beginning, or is there a method to update, like android stock when a new update comes out? Like OTA update....

The guides use the same method, but the wording is a little different. I personally like the one I provided since theres a bit more info. Make sure you read abaaaabbbb63's understanding guide first though.
With PA when a new update is released you can usually just dirty flash it on top of your current build. This means downloading the update, going into recovery, flashing the update, and only wiping the cache and dalvik. You should not lose any data when you do this. PA also is working on an OTA system, but AFAIK its not fully functioning yet.

Good luck. Also make sure you read the OP of the official PA thread. It contains step by step by step instructions on how to flash and other useful stuff. (If you are currently on 4.2, its recommended to update your radio and boot loader to the 4.3....you can find out how in the PA OP.)

Can we flash xposed via twrp or flash fire ?
Do it. At your own risk.
If you do it please let us know the results and which version you flashed.
I was also wondering about Viper4Android. I could really use the boost and equalizer.
Can you either nandroid back or flash a stock image if things go south? Can you even flash zips in TWRP yet without issue? You're rolling a big pair if you can't do either.
Is there an xposed for Nougat? Rumor says no. Rumor confirmed.

To be honest, there's really not much benefit at all to rooting yet. Yet people spend hours upon hours of aggravation trying to do so, with many of them that shouldn't be anywhere near an ADB command.
It's the same story with every new phone. The "root commandos."
Xposed isn't working for Nougat I thought
http://androiding.how/xposed-android-nougat-7-0/
It's Working Now. Don't Use Material Xposed Installer. Use The official Xposed Installer APK which is 3.1.2 Currently. Otherwise None Of The Modules Will Work.

I was just thinking the same thing... i've almost always rooted and modified my phones.. but I think it was usually for a specific purpose or need..
the older phones I had were running touchwiz.. which i HATED to use.. so was so eager to get ROM with more of a stock android..
Or how I would love having some of the features of Cyanogenmod.. like "ScreenShot" or Reboot menu ... but with the V20.. it has screen shot built in beautifully..
I know it was also nice to be able to install titanium backup and be able to delete a lot of the stock bloatware .. but the V20 doesn't have much.. plus I can disable most of them...
I do wish I could find a rom that may run a little faster... I have noticed some Hiccups with this phone.. and 1 or 2 random reboots.. but honestly i'm sure if I went with custom software or modifed with Xposed.. i could see that more..
It would be interesting to see what some of the reasons why people on here have rooted the V20.

Mega ROM On 7.0 Stock Kernel With SU. If You Have TWRP, Back Up Just In Case. Download Xposed Installer And In Settings There Is An Installation Option, Choose Manual (This Will Save Downloaded Files So You Can Flash Manually From SD) go To The Main Screen And You Can Get Both The Official framework And The Uninstaller. Consider Looking Up How To Unbrick just In Case

I never did root my V20. I'm on the Note 8 now and can't see any benefit of rooting it, either.
I'm really fond of Android Pay. I'm pretty fond of my phone working as it should all day every day. To one degree or the other, you lose that with root. SystemUI tuner will do quite a bit of Xposed's work, and I'm not so annoyed with ads that I feel a need for Adaway.

Dl the APK, sdk24 arm64 version of xposed, and the Uninstaller. Install the APK and allow the app to install xposed through recovery. It will begin install, prompt to reboot in recovery, obviously select okay. Then it's an automatic process. Initial boot up time takes a while so be patient. Everything should be good to go after that. Good luck!
BTW I'm on h918, stock 10q.
I have YouTube adblock, boot manager, xposed torch, and stay awake for now. I feel like a nerd being excited about xposed. This is making the v20 even better!

BOOST MOBILE VARIANT ONLY, AT THE MOMENT.
If anyone wants a magisk build, take the ARG2 stock update and go through intial setup. When you do take the update, you WILL NOT, I repeat you WILL NOT be able to downgrade to the ARF2,ARC1 AQJ3,APL1, AQF4 , and AQB6 versions or you will risk bricking your device.
From now on, ALWAYS, I repeat, ALWAYS, keep Gapps( arm, 6.0, stock) on hand!!!
There is no need to check any of the checkboxes when using the aroma as you should have already wiped dalvik, system, data, and cache prior to flashing the ROM. I have also integrated the no verity ashyx zip into my ROM, so unless data cant be mounted then before flashing rom, there is NO reason to flash the no verity ashyx zip manually. After flashing rom, wipe cache , dalvik and then reboot.

I finally pulled us out of alpha and the first beta is ready. She's a little rough around the edges but overall it's pretty nice. I'll update the OP in a few. Once we can get the stock from stable I'll build a device tree and take a crack at compiling and building lineage os and probably others too, hang in there
@jlrockafella and @SonderTech beta will be live soon here https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0Bz99NuhE3XwmcHUzcmhpZXJ4Sms i included stock boot.img so those who would like to use it instead of supersu can do so. This will be less complicated @SonderTech i included your boot animation too. i have slow upload so hang tight and thank you so much for all the contributions you've made!! ??I'll update the op with simple directions for us in a bit but it's close to stable now

I do have twrp. I'm glad I asked before bricking my phone haha. I'll check up on it next week. I can't thank you enough, these are not bad little phones. I'm baffled there aren't more people working on projects like this for these samsungs.

And I would very much like that ROM on my virgin mobile device. I would owe you big. I'm not fond of the touchwiz interface and many of the other features that come on the stock firmware.

I built this today for you https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0Bz99NuhE3XwmajBNY0IyZ2FFWkk I understand you are not fond of touchwiz and neither am I, what i suggest is to install xposed to use gravity box and use the firefds kit along side it to make the ROM however you want. Your ROM is in testing phase so I dont want to tear things apart and replace them until we know whats good and not good. Thank you for your support. Enjoy and follow along as we improve on this base ROM. I used Virgin Firmware so make a backup please first and let me know what you think. It's uploading now so please wait an hour or so for it to finish

It is for the time being, pulling touchwiz caused ALOT of confusion for folks im working on using a different one but setup is affected without it. Honestly i wish i could use evie as the base without borking the rom

Ah, I see, you could try making it aosp and see what happens
I'm using a custom kernel on my rooted device and want to try out another. Do I need to flash back to the stock kernel before flashing to the other kernel or I can just flash it on top of my custom kernel?
If I have to flash back to stock kernel is there a place I could download the stock kernel?
Using EXKM and rom is 10.5.8.IN11AA
Sorry for the noob question I am completely new to this.
Although you can get by prolly by flashing another, I've always gone by flashing stock, and THEN the new kernel, and what I recommend. Believe others would do. As far as the stock kernel, I wanna say there's a thread somewhere that has them posted, but you may have to search.

I did try to search but I read a lot of people try to extract it from the stock rom or something like that. I'm not sure how to do that though.
If somebody could post a link on the stock kernel file that would be great

Go here, download the 10.5.8 2023 BA variant for your device, confirm hash. Go to settings, syatem updates, cog wheel, local upgrade, select package. I THINK it'll let you flash it like an upgrade, but don't quote me, I am not to familiar with the device yet, or oneplus in general. Just flash magisk to other boot slot after if it says your device will no longer be rooted stuff, you know. The typical.
I'ma go to bed, but if that doesn't work, you can see about opening the .zip up, extract the payload and search google for a method that'll extract the kernel for you. Best of luck.
Oh, and in case it wasn't reiterated, back up persist partition too. Just in case, always. In case it wasn't obvious.

Is there a specific reason that I would flash to BA not AA?
So I would lose root and have to reinstall magisk is that correct?
PS I also have nolimit rom installed.

My apologies, I thought I saw you said IN11BA, not IN11AA. Do the AA. Caught me right before I fell asleep. But putting phone on charger. Good night.

And magisk.... Open magisk up and flash to other slot after you do the system update. Tada. Recommended to disable modules first.

If mine is the Chinese version which was flashed to global rom, will it be stuck in bootloop again if I update it from OTA again?
It was stuck the first time round and I had to wipe cache and setting.

It SHOULDN'T but I also provide no guarantee, as not specifically certain. But I do highly doubt it would be stuck in bootloop again, it's just the first time around.

Using elementalX myself atm. Although I'm always interested in what others bring, too.
