Bootloop on all nougat roms with moto x pure - X Style (Pure) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Bootloop on all nougat roms with stock marshmallow rooted with TWRP . Every nougat rom I try to use I get a bootloop and I have no idea what to do to make them work. I'm using a moto x pure.
Sent from my XT1575 using XDA Premium HD app

A few things to check. What bootloader version are you on? It will show on the screen when you're booted to bootloader mode for fastboot flashing, and the date that shows up there can be useful for identifying which one it is. Or you can enter this in a terminal:
Code:
getprop ro.bootloader
, but it won't show the date.
What version of TWRP are you using?
Have you tried formatting internal storage? (obviously do appropriate backups off device first) Just a thought. I've had some roms fail to boot due to files and permissions problems leftover after a standard wipe for a clean flash, but that has always been on other devices. I've never run into it on a moto.

Same here Upgraded my Moto XT1752 to nugat, then unlocked bootloader, installed twrp, then rooted, and in the end only custom rom (tried only nugat based, except for flyme) working for me was flymeos based on android 6.x.x (it is for moto XT1750) and ofc recovery options :/ Tried different gapps and different approach to wiping (wipe all, then reset, wipe again and then install rom etc.)
Can it be baseband issue ? mine is M8992_1255331.29.01.88.07R_Clark_EMEA_CUST ?
edit:
My TWRP version is 3.1.1.0
edit2: k already found solution for the issue https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-style/help/flash-android-7-x-x-based-custom-roms-t3633582

TWRP prevents Marshmallow?

I may be doing something stupid, but I've tried various options...
I had an original 5.1.1 build that I let OTA to 6.0. Everything was working fine. I wanted to root, so I installed TWRP... and then the machine wouldn't reboot; it stuck at the "powered by Android" screen and never went into the standard animation screens. I could reboot into TWRP recovery easily enough and using that I could see the filesystem data, but the OS wouldn't boot.
So I reflashed back to 5.1.1 (using http://www.andromods.com/download-files/xt1575-stock-firmware-moto-x-2015-pure-edition.html ), let that OTA to 6.0, installed TWRP... same result.
Third attempt; started at 5.1.1 then installed TWRP (which worked) and then did OTA to 6.0... but this went into a reboot loop.
(Of course during all this I've lost my configs, but I can rebuild that)
Has anyone been able to install TWRP onto an X-Pure 2015 that's running 6.0 ?
What TWRP version are you installing? Make sure it's 2.8.7.1 https://dl.twrp.me/clark/
Sent from my XT1575 using Tapatalk
Sorry, yes, I should have mentioned that; twrp-2.8.7.1-clark.img
Did you install TWRP as read only? I did this and now system recovery is overwriting TWRP and I have no idea how to get out of it.
I had the same problem a couple days ago and posted about it in the 'Android 6.0 Update rolling out! Pure Edition' thread:
"I keep running into a problem after doing the MM update when I flash TWRP (either 2.8.7.0 or 2.8.7.1) where it won't boot into system, just sits there where the animation part should start. Booted/rebooted fine a few times after finishing the MM update, even after flashing the unlocked bootloader logo fix, but as soon as I flash recovery it won't boot system. "
Tried it several times with both TWRP 2.8.7.0 and 2.8.7.1 with no success. Also tried sideloading the OTA per the manual steps in this thread but still couldn't boot to system. Only by already having TWRP installed on 5.1.1 am I able to flash a custom 6.0 ROM successfully. Haven't seen a really clear statement yet that someone has flashed TWRP on fully stock MM with no problem..

First time I let /system be read-write and second time I let /system be RO. However this likely isn't related to recovery overwriting TWRP; it's documented that on first boot the OS may rewrite the recovery data meaning you'd need to install TWRP again.

I have flashed TWRP twice and even rebooted to recovery from recovery and system recovery still overwrites TWRP after booting to system.
Only way I can access TWRP is either flashing it or booting into from the fastboot folder using the fastboot boot command.
Doesn't matter what I do, the option for changing TWRP from read-write to read only doesn't show up anymore.

Well, at age 65 I do put my socks on backwards sometimes..... :silly:
Read on a fairly-detailed post that using adb to flash recovery and rebooting into it should actually work fine!
Could anyone confirm? Is it even possible?
P.S. I'm on XT1572 Indian stock 6.0, and very eager for twrp
I had the exact same problem. I used adb. Stuck on loading screen and then suddenly black. Not able to boot the phone. I'd like to make a nandroid and after that I'd like to use systemless root. If I'm correct, I'll still receive ota's while using systemless root.
Same for me. Returned to stock EU 5.1.1, got update, installed it. Later unlocked bootloader and installed latest TWRP. And now I am stuck on booting up image.
So stock Marshmallow cant be used with TWRP?

That seems to be the case since I have yet to hear of anyone freshly setting up TWRP for clark/MXPE on purely stock MM without it failing to boot to system afterwards. If you already have TWRP on 5.1.1 you can install a custom MM ROM and then TWRP works normally (ie boots to system), but so far that's the only way I'm aware of to get it functional on MM.
I see you started another thread on this, which may help it get noticed, but maybe also post in the TWRP thread. I posted there on this issue over a week ago but have had zero response from OP, but if others keep doing so maybe that will help.
IMVHO, TWRP for MXPE isn't being supported well - this problem, the version being incorrect for several weeks causing confusion w/dozens of unnecessary posts (this alone could likely be fixed in 2 minutes), as well as the 'SD as internal storage' issue(s) which may be more involved but are still the type of thing those maintaining it are supposed to address. Even some acknowledgement that the issues are recognized and being worked on would be nice, but thus far not even that.

Did you not use the Fastboot Install Method on the TWRP site? We are unable to reboot back into system after using this on stock MM, which always worked fine on stock LP. If you used a different method that worked could you please share what that was?
I am using twrp 2.8.7.1 on my Moto X Style XT1572 Asia retail without any trouble for past two weeks.
I normally flashed it using the fastboot and never ran into trouble.

Just to confirm - when you flashed TWRP you were completely stock after installing the 6.0 OTA (not still on 5.1.1 before taking the OTA), correct?

Here is what I did:-
1) I was in Stock 5.1.1 (had unlocked bootloader)
2) I took the OTA.
3) Flashed the twrp 2.8.7.1 using fastboot
So yes I was completely stock 6.0 when I flashed the TWRP for MM

Flashing Custom Rom,MIUI roms makes the recovery to reboot ! Help ME

I messed up with my Redmi 2 1GB. I tried Fastbooting MIUI 6,MIUI 7,MIUI 8 roms they work and run fine. When I install custom Recovery [Gets installed succesfully.] and try to flash Any zip file Recovery reboots itself.
Earlier I was On CM13. Now flashing the ZIP file makes the recovery reboot itself, even on miui roms too.
Bootloader is UNLOCKED.
HELP ME
I TRIED HELL OF CONBINATIONS OF FASTBOOT ROMS,RECOVERIES, FLASHFIRE [ETC] NOTHING WORKS, MIUI UPDATES ARE FLASHED WITHOUT ANY PROBLEM BY SYSTEM [SYSTEM UPDATES (may be those which dont have assert, getprop like things)].
Do you flash files from the internal storage?.
Or do you get device mismatch error.
Haven't seen this restart error in other phones yet.
I am flashing files from my external SD card, I even tried flashing from Internal storage. I don't get device mismatch error.
I am using MIUI 7 stable ROM right now because I am unable to flash CM13.
I observed a strange thing:
I fastboot MIUI 7 stable global, In recovery, I ran getprop in terminal, I saw some cyanogen keys, and device like cm_wt88047 , as recovery is rebooting as soon as I swipe to install, how do I see this? Keys and all , I will send a pic soon soon
I fastbooted miui 7.1 global stable rom, flashed TWRP. Advanced->Terminal ran getprop command found following things

Fingerprint with Lineage OS and Ressurection Remix nougat

Hi everyone,
I have a little problem with fingerprint with these 2 roms.
Normally I could add 5 fingers but I can only 3 max. If I try to configure the last 2, all my fingerprints dont work at all.
Moreover I can't delete fingeprints. When I try, they come back.
That is an issue which not occur with 6.0 custom roms.
Someone know how to fx it?
Thanks.
I'd suggest flashing the stock nougat 93-11 or 93-14 firmware (e.g. from the guides section) to resolve your fingerprint issues. Once that's done, future installs of lineage and RR should have fingerprint support for more than 3 fingers.
Thanks for replying.
I have xt1642. Is there a stock firmware Nougat for this device? I didnt find it

I've got an XT1642 (UK - retGB, EMEA baseband) and updated to Nougat 93-11 using the stock files on here okay (now running Lineage with 4 FPs set).
The ROM I used to upgrade was the one linked here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g4-plus/how-to/guide-install-official-december-nougat-t3518262 This will bring you up to the official 93-11 update via installing from stock recovery - you need Marshmallow build 139-63/64 however.
However, you may like to try either of these guides as well: https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g4-plus/how-to/moto-g4-plus-xt1640-43-athene-npj25-93-t3549369
https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g4-plus/how-to/android-7-0-install-nougat-official-t3531612
As long as you can successfully install a Nougat stock ROM onto your device, the updates should mean your fingerprint sensor works properly in the custom ROMs. Bear in mind that updating to Nougat may wipe your data and cause you to lose TWRP/root until you re-install them.
Last question: can I wipe system and internal storage before installing ressurection?

Once you've installed Nougat (and I recommend installing TWRP too), if you wish to install Resurrection Remix, only wipe system, data, Dalvik and cache. Don't wipe internal storage, since that's where your ROM zip is stored!

MotoG4+ XT1644 6.01 to 7.0 Saga (for others to avoid)

OK Please note (4-25-17) this message is a work in progress, as I slowly restore my system.
This is a listing and hopefully helpful listing of what I did (right and wrong)
in upgrading my Systemless-rooted (suuser) phone from 6.01 to 7.00 (nougat)
# 1. it did not work, and I went back to 6.01 successfully using the twrp recovery
I have previously used Bender's guid (here) to get the system-less root on 6.01.
essentailly, here's the best plan. Use the Minimal ADB and Fastboot package (MADB &F) (here)
(Explanation: the MADB&FB package will allow you do do LOTS of stuff related to updating your phone, with very little grief.)
it also includes the ability to automatically "push" a package over your usb connection if the ZIP file doesnt load right. **THIS will come in handy later!
Once MADB&F is installed, make note of your directory, and then make sure you start your dos window (for pc users) as an administrator!
BTW, if I HADN'T made the "TWRP backup" of my system, I'd be Sh*t out of luck right now...", because I screwed up the 7.0 upgrade.
the technical problem was that I had no data, no modem, no way of getting data/voice in/out.
SIMPLY using the TWRP restore fixed me!!!
(so far, we have MADB&FB, downloaded and bender's (chainfire) rootless guide.
Next you want to download the current firmware image for your phone. This will be a lifesaver, I promise!
3) Download a TWRP image (this will MAGICALLY load on your pc when you tell it you need help! Look HERE
(Athene is the Motorola Codename for the motoG4+)
3) copy the athene TWRP image into your madb&FB directory to make it easy to load
4) next, (you still haven't touched your phone yet, you realize: (skipping some basics here, you can search here on XDA to find more info)
a) plug your phone into your pc
b) make sure you are a developer
c) make sure your phone shows you are connected to your pc for file transfers, NOT for charging
5) in your MADB&FB directory, (aka a dos/(admin) window) type the following:
all commands at this point will take place in whatever directory you installed Minimal ADB & Fast boot (MADB&FB)
Connect your phone to your PC and open MADB&FB, check the connection with:
adb devices
return should include your "serial-no" and "device".
6) next, on pc, tell the system to reboot your phone to the bootloader!
Reboot into bootloader with:
adb reboot-bootloader
and check again with:
fastboot devices
7) Next you are going to download TWRP to your phone (not permanently, just for a bit!)
fastboot. flash recovery twrp-3.0.2-0-athene.img
Now you have TWRP (Team Windows RECOVERY PROJECT) loaded.
SO.. THIS is where you create a backup of your current stuff using the backup options.
NEXT:
take the suUser2.78 (stateless rooting), and once your backup is done, install it from TWRP
Then (I was) back to 6.01 rooted.
NEXT: 7.0 and then rooting... (will update tomorrow)
did a successful upgrade to 7.0,
then unsuccessfully tried to sideload supersu2.78, which bricked loader
then downgraded again to 6.01 (and rooted again, ok)
will continue tomorrow.
need working phone for now..
cheers to all, and to all, a happy spelunking!
You can't root factory Nougat as is, it is well encrypted.
You need to replace first the kernel with the ElementalX one, or you will end up with bootloops.
Only after that you can do SuperSU, but only with the latest beta.
A few pointers from your story:
1)As you've found out the hard way, you won't be able to update to Nougat if you have root and/or TWRP, because the update requires a stock system - stock recovery, system and no modifications (bootloader status doesn't matter). In other words, you'll need to unroot and restore your stock recovery - might be easier to reflash the stock system, probably the quickest way to flash a stock ROM (and update to Nougat) is to use the fastboot ROM. https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g4-plus/how-to/moto-g4-plus-xt1640-43-athene-npj25-93-t3549369 Of course, this will remove root and TWRP, as well as potentially wipe your data, so back up accordingly. This should flash the NPJ25.93-14 build on your device, which appears to be the latest global build.
1a)Also, if you flash Nougat this way, your bootloader and GPT partitions will be updated, so if you wish to downgrade to Marshmallow at any point, when flashing do not flash these partitions from the Marshmallow ROM. Fastboot should stop you, but a brick may occur if these get flashed.
1b) You may find in the Guides section TWRP backups of Nougat builds, I don't recommend using these to update your system with. Granted, they have most of the Nougat system in a TWRP backup, but some crucial firmware (e.g. the baseband) is not included, and may cause you issues if your device is not formally flashed to Nougat.
2) As SoNic67 has already mentioned, the stock kernel security will cause your device to bootloop should you choose to try to root following the Marshmallow method. If you wish to use SuperSU, follow this guide: https://forum.xda-developers.com/mo...de-root-moto-g4-plus-supersu-android-t3587918 You may wish to use a more up to date TWRP than the official 3.0.2 (I recommend shrep's TWRP 3.0.3 n4 here:https://forum.xda-developers.com/mo...covery-twrp-3-0-2-r3-moto-g4-g4-plus-t3494337) Whatever you do, ensure you flash first the ElementalX kernel before you flash the SuperSU v2.79 SR3 beta (https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/supersu/2014-09-02-supersu-v2-05-t2868133), or apply the systemless fix with earlier SuperSU versions as directed in the aforementioned rooting with SuperSU guide. Else you'll be having bootloops or your device will not boot whatsoever. Here's my steps in successfully rooting Nougat: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=71817346&postcount=225. Good luck either way.

After updating my US retail xt1644 to nougat, by restoring totally-stock marshmallow then taking the OTA, I wiped data and made a *complete* TWRP backup using @Shreps' unofficial 3.1 TWRP build (https://moto.shreps.fr/Moto G4 (athene)/recovery/twrp-3.1.0-athene_shreps.img).
This version of TWRP allows backup/restore of the full set of firmware partitions including baseband, DSP, etc.
In other words, I believe the TWRP backup folder in the following .zip file provides a one-stop path to the latest xt1644 USRET firmware by doing a restore from TWRP 3.1.0.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4XobQzgZVHyRTlmSDMtYkdZeUU/view?usp=drivesdk
My only uncertainly is if the ota process modified the partition table in a way that might make this backup image incompatible with the xt1644 still in the marshmallow state.
I've often wondered if I (or a more skilled enthusiast) couldn't build a TWRP-flashable .zip that would setup the partition table, update the baseband, etc. This is what I've grown used to from devs on other phones I've had, but perhaps there's something about the way moto does things that makes this problematic.

Nice one, hopefully that'll help more XT 1644 users I'm still not sure if TWRP can backup/flash the baseband by itself, but I don't have a XT 1644 to test. I imagine your backup will need a clean flash (wipe data/cache/Dalvik) to work?
The OTA process does update the partition table, but as far as I know, that should not prevent you from flashing back to Marshmallow/Nougat as you wish, so long as you did not try to downgrade the GPT/bootloader.
There was an effort to create TWRP flashables of the stock ROMs a little while ago (you can see the thread here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g4/development/fxz-athene-twrp-flashable-fastboots-t3562147) which if I understood it created flashable radios and ROMs from the firmware files we have. We can't touch the GPT/bootloader since, as I recall, you need a signed stock firmware to do so (and besides, downgrading GPT might be asking for a brick). I recall some users mention they were able to run Nougat TWRP flashes on the MM bootloader/GPT without issue.
There were issues with simply flashing the Nougat 93-14 radio baseband files for some US users, losing LTE in the process and appears the only resolution was to flash the stock ROM - I don't know what the cause was (perhaps no/incorrect CDMA support in the radio files?). Your TWRP flash is from a US based phone so may have better luck in that department, and will likely behave on your device since that OTA has updated all the firmware on your device that TWRP isn't able to touch. I still am not sure if we can use this TWRP backup to update on a MM device without issue, but only one way to find out...

What firmware? 7.0 or 8.1? If you are on 8.1 it's as safe as it ever is to flash a custom ROM.
If you're still on 7.0 you should update first and in any case make a full nandroid backup incl. Persist and EFS before you flash anything.

Yes. If you can update via OTA that should be the way to go. If you can't flash full Motorola signed fastboot 8.1 firmware:
https://mirrors.lolinet.com/firmware/moto/potter/official/
Unlock the BL on Motorola website, boot to or flash TWRP and make a full nandroid incl. persist.
After that you shoud be good to go and flash custom ROMS. Check whether the selected ROM needs 7.0 or 8.1 as base, almost all of them need stock Oreo.

Oh yeah, I'm rusty.. Software channel duh, linux gets its stuff there... I guess it is potter xt1687, which is odd though as a website said it wasn't potter.. Anyway, looking in the gsm arena and checking against other variants of our g5 plus, it seems that everything but the radios are the same so is it safe to flash variants backing up the original radio? Thank you very much

You wrote you're on the retus channel and model is 1687. Here are the firmwares for your device, the second one ( OPS28.85-17-6-2) is the latest and last build, flash that one and everything should be fine:
https://mirrors.lolinet.com/firmware/moto/potter/official/RETUS/
You still know how to fastboot flash? Unzip firmware to ADB/Fastboot folder etc.?
Here's a post I made for someone else, it includes a link to a flashall.bat, put in in there too so you don't have to manually flash all partitions, just double-click it and it'll run all the commands for you.

So I was on stock and flashed twrp after successful unlock of bootloader. After backing up, got stuck at bootloader before any further changes made, yet it was booting fine with bootloader before that.. Saw in a post to flash stock after re locking bootloader, then unlick again...
I skipped that just to get a rom on, now running havoc 9.0 but cannot seem to root as the two su & magisk arent cuttin it in twrp.
Are you really telling me I gotta revert back to stock and flash root in stock to get root?
If so, couldnt i just flash havoc 8.1 and root that way.
Yes i still remember how to flash via adb. Thank you very much

I'm not sure that I understand everything. After flashing (official) TWRP and making a nandroid you weren't able to boot to system, only to bootloader?
Have you updated to 8.1 stock Oreo before?
Havoc needs that definitely:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/g5-plus/development/rom-havoc-os-v2-2-t3906282/post79018816
It won't make any sense to revert to stock and root it because after flashing havoc root will be lost anyway. What do you mean with "the two su & Magisk aren't cuttin it in TWRP"? (English is not my native language)
Why two? There should be magisk only to flash.
So the goal seems to be making TWRP work correctly when running havoc to be able to flash magisk.zip and boot to system.
Can you post a recovery log after the attempt to flash magisk from TWRP (the function is in TWRP/ advanced/log.)
Can you boot to havoc directly now?
Are you able to reach TWRP?
I need the error message that appears when you try to flash magisk, should be in the log.
And what is it about two things, su AND magisk?
Magisk.zip is the su binary.
Please provide some more information and sorry if it's me who don't understand something.

- I got root after all. Seems I was just flashing no verity before root and it was suppise to be after.
- there was a super su which I'd rather have to mod things with but neither worked until i figured out as mentioned above
- now I'm trying to get gaps to work..
- also having problem flashing rom withou encryption, it keeps forcing it encrypted.
- here is link to 3 images of what i've got currently:

Never use SuperSU alongside with magisk but I think you know that now.
To remove encryption: It's not enough to wipe data in TWRP, you have to format it (the option where you have to confirm with "Yes" and not just wipe). That will wipe your internal storage too.
Only formatting data in TWRP will remove the encryption and the Disable_Dm-Verity_ForceEncrypt_02.04.2019.zip will keep it decrypted. Make sure usb debugging is enabled.
Boot to TWRP and flash ROM and Gapps (both in one action without a reboot in between).
Now flash the no verity-force encryption.zip.
You can reboot to system now but you can also flash the magisk.zip directly afterwards, it helps to keep the data partition encrypted too.
I flash everything in a row.

Thanks for the encryption link.. Any idea on the pros n cons on encryption in the world of flashing zips and modding?
I see pros n cons on google search for encryption but not from developments perspective

I decrypt my device, for example to have access to /data in case of a bootloop because of a magisk module. I don't like the idea of not physically seeing parts of my partitions or even not being able to edit it.
From the sight of security it's better to encrypt naturally. It depends a bit how old your device is and what you want to do with it.
I never lost my device or it was getting stolen so as long it's in my pocket I don't need encryption.
But that's just my personal opinion.

Hey so I found a really cool way to decrypt but ROM after it's already been encrypted and you have all your stuff in it, I figured it out on accident. What I did was simply did a backup through TWRP and formatted the drive. When I restored the drive it was decrypted! And all this time everyone ever told me that you cannot decrypt. Pretty cool. Actually found this out by switching to a ROM and then going back anyway maybe people should know this? Hope it helps thanks for all the pointers
