When I switch from Samsung messenger to Google messenger my texts will no longer pop up on lock screen and don't get the blue light around the edge. All settings are identical for notifications between the 2 apps. . It did the exact same thing on my s7. Any ideas??

It's a native feature Google messenger doesn't have.

Well that sucks, what's the point.

Native features like this are the reason why you get phones like the S8. HD voice and ways to recall messages and what not. I know the feeling though. I think these features should be included on all phones now a day.

On the Gmail app or the email app from htc?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
I think it's a no brainer...it's on his HTC Email app. Google doesn't offer it (Yet). I use the Samsung Email app on my S3 and I love it. There litterally is no difference other than it's got a black background which is not a big deal. I can zoom in and out and read the whole email with ease. It totally, for me, removes any desire to use the native Gmail app.
If you switch, make sure you turn of notifications in the Gmail app.
As a side note, I'm a purist of sorts. I love my GNex in all it's glory, but needed this S3 Beast. I don't like all the bloatware but their Email app is nice.

I live Google products but it can be infuriating how half ass some of their key products can be at times.
Yay the new hangouts app is out! And still can't do video over cellular!

You can with xposed
True but I can't root this particular phone.
I'm also noticing Google plus is crashing a lot since the update.

It's the xposed module and yes it does work. Somewhere in the settings, I can't remember. I think it's in the security hacks section of xposed.
It is in wanam under security.
Does anyone know if AT&T's statement regarding allowing video chat apps that come preloaded on AT&T phones to once again work over their mobile network by the end of 2013 applies to Google Hangouts? I know they were addressing the outrage associated with them blocking Facetime...but it seems like it should apply to Hangouts also. I can't get an answer from AT&T, everyone I've talked to with customer service didn't even know what Google Hangouts was.
Note 3 -- Tapatalk version [HORRIBLE.1x]
It seems like Hangout uses the actual phone number from the carrier to send and receive SMS even though it was my Google Voice number that was confirmed after the update. I have tried sending SMS from Hangout but my friend did not receive it on the other end.
I had AT&T blocked all text messages since switching to Google Voice when they told me that they would only offer unlimited text message plan. Yea, I was annoyed enough to go change my number on all my friend's contact list. SMS from AT&T itself isn't blocked and those are the ones that show up in Hangout.
The latest Hangouts update allows me to use over mobile data BTW.

Sweet I just checked mine and mine works too. Awesome
Hey guys. With the new hangouts there are a lot of the features from previous SMS apps missing. Like the quick pop up reply from notification menu and multiple contacts.
I like hangouts and to be honest I'd like to use just one app only. Using Textra and it is awesome but can I uninstall hangouts and just use Textra on its own? What you guys use

I use google voice, barely any improvements, very buggy. But I haven't found anything better for texting thru voice. Also kakaotalk which is very bloated. I want a clean app that has option to send/not send push notifications. Know any?
I'm glad u said Hangouts is mandatory, I hate that. Can't we revert back to an older version and not be forced to use proprietary crap.
Hangouts is NOT mandatory, you can use any texting app you want.

Yea totally not Mandatory I used it for a week or so as my default sms application but then i switched back to the regular that came with the phone.
I use Hangouts. Its functional and full featured. The only annoying thing is that convos with the same person are separated by SMS and IM hangouts.

I noticed that I only show my texts as delivered using the stock messaging app when I send to another samsung phone. When I send to my wife's iPhone it just shows the time it was sent. I have all the settings enabled. Used textra on my previous phone (N6) with no issues. Thanks.
Tmobile to tmobile has advanced messaging which shows sent and read if they seen it.

I'm on t-mobile and so is my wife's 6s plus.
Only on certain devices is it enabled like the g5, note 5, s6, s7/edge. And a few others. I phone isn't supported yet. Better to use hangout if you want an imessage like sms

IPhone doesn't co exist with android
when we face our problems, they dissappear. So, learn from failure and let success be the silent incentive
Thanks. I was just looking for a sms/mms delivery confirmation. Textra does this. The stock messages app doesn't.

The stock messaging app does do this. In the messaging app settings>more settings>Text messages. Enable delivery reports.
I have those settings enabled and the only time it worked is when I texted another samsung phone. Did not work texting any other phones.
If your carrier supports RCS, you can follow this video to enable it on your Hongkong / Taiwan Galaxy Note 20 Ultra.
For those who don't know what RCS is, it's a feature where you can send original quality photos, video and other large supported files using your phones messaging app. It's like iMessage.
What does it do really, with rcs

You will be able to send uncompressed photos, videos and other large supported files thru the messaging app. It's like iMessage.
It also works for unlocked device on U1 firmware on T-Mobile.

For them to support it natively. Should not need google messages, as Samsung messages supports it, as long as the network provider has Universal advanced messaging.

I'm on verizon, was using google messages for chat, but turned it off. I'm missing too many messages. People will call and ask me if I got them, I check and status in chat just says "connecting". Have to force close and open messages again to connect, but the missed messages never make it through.
That's good to hear. I was wondering why I was missing messages, here and there. I thought it was due to something else.

Yeah, I simply don't like samsung messages because the screen lights up every time someone texts me. My kids have prying eyes. I know I can put a lock screen on, but it still lights up. I hate that.

I'm very sorry for how this may sound..... BUT, you know you can change the "light- up" settings per each app in your settings right? Your phone doesn't have to light-up for each text message you receive, or any other app for that matter.
