Hi everyone.
I just got my brand new Moto G5 Plus, moved everything off my older phone just fine, and only later did I realize it hadn't recognized my sdcard. The card is a "SanDisk Ultra 32 GB MicroSDHC C10/UHS1". The card works fine on my old phone, on a sd slot on my notebook, and on a usb reader too. I tried a second card too and the same happens. There is no message, no prompt, nothing. I tried a single FAT32 partition, a FAT32 "superfloppy" (ie: no partitions - filesystem starts on sector 0) and I also tried filling the first few mb with 0s so that it would appear unformatted. Always nothing.
I installed a terminal app and I see nothing on /proc/partitions but I can't access the kernel logs - no access to dmesg or logcat (rooting the phone is not an option for me, need it clean for work).
I am starting to feel like this is a hardware issue in the phone. I did a live chat with Lenovo support and they are offering to send it back and get a replacement under warranty, which is fine, but I had the phone brought to me by a friend from the US and I don't live there, so the process would be a major hassle. I want to get the opinion of people who actually know their stuff (here!) since the last things the Lenovo person made me try before giving up were "clearing the app settings" and "booting in safe mode". both of which accomplished nothing but they might've well asked me to change my facebook status in my opinion!!
So, if I am forced to pick between mailing it back and getting a replacement and keeping it as it is without sdcard I am afraid I may end up choosing the latter... is there anything else I can try?
I will try a factory reset on the weekend when I have the time to have the phone down for a few hours, but I honestly can't see that working.
Kinda hoping for a small miracle I suppose
Thank you!
Hi.
Update: I did the factory reset and, as expected, nothing. Same behavior as before.
I found how to get the logcat to work via adb, and got the logs and I see no messages of external sdcard whatsoever. I can see the messages about the SIM being taken off and reinserted, but absolutely nothing about the SD. Hardware failure seems to be clear now...
Thanks

Did you end up exchanging your unit for a new one? Hopefully the new one works.

Moto G5 plus sdcard problem resolved
The problem is a mechanical one. The terminals of the sdcard are not connecting once you insert the sdcard. I put teo layers of scotch tape on the sdcard and inserted it. It worked. The 2 layers od scotch tape pushed the sd card downwards connecting the sdcard with the terminals on the reader circuit of the phone. Problem solved.

Thanks for the suggestion.
Do you live in a hot climate? Have you had any stuck drawer issues?
I am worried that if I adopt your solution,in my current local 37 degree centigrade climate, the adhesive may leak with inconvenient consequences (e.g. electronics damage aside from the one mentioned above).

Hi everyone,
I bought my HTC Touch HD in April 2009 and I didn't customize the phone in any way. I only installed some backupping software and TomTom.
Anyway, the phone tends to freeze a lot. Sometimes it works fine for a week straight and then it just starts freezing. What happens is that the screen stops responding, as well as all buttons. The only way to fix that is by removing the back case and press the Reset button or by removing the battery. The freezes got worse over the last days. After a reset the phone sometimes already freezes before I can even enter my SIM card password.
It started freezing last year, but it seems to be getting worse now. I already tried a hard (full) reset, but that didn't solve the problem. Anyway, I found this after I removed the battery today: see attachment.
One of the 3 copper terminals is bent down, so it might not touch the battery. It looks like this might cause my problems. I tried bending it back carefully, but no success yet. Does anyone have an idea what I can do? Is it actually possible that a bend terminal can cause freezes?

i started having a similar problem yesterday, it gets worse if when I access the storage card and just locks up.
can anyone offer advise
The storage cards have been known to dramatically reduce the stability of these phones... I think I am at that stage (again) too...
My procedure, that's worked before, is:
- remove storage card from phone, put it in a adapter / USB/Flash port and connect to a Windows PC.
- Back-up required files to PC
- Open "My Computer" and right click on the removable drive (containing your SD), choose "Format"
- Make sure you select FAT file system over NTFS if offered the choice.
- Reinstate backed up files and try back in your phone.
Be careful when teasing that battery terminal, on different phones I've tried to re-allign the little brass terminals and snapped it from the tiny solder joint inside the case, despite it still being attached to the case... First I knew was the phone went from charging poorly, to not even powering up....
This is the second time and a different card that this has happened with me. I've tried ruu and that doesn't help. I thought maybe there was a file on it that the phone didn't like so I backed up the card and let the phone format it. Problem went away for awhile. I got a faster card and now its doing it again. I had a similar but more destructive times of this happening with the evo. It would corrupt the card and I lost everything on it. What I ended up doing was put a piece of paper the size of the card on top of the card. This was to make the battery hold down the card more firmly. I suspected the crappy mechanism htc used on both phones is at fault. The card would wiggle around when it was seated in the slot and the lock bar down. I don't know if this is the case again with the shift but I did it again with this card. Hopefully that does the trick. I would hate to take the phone back.

no problems here (yet), but I hope this doesn't happen.
This has happened to me on all my android phones. My hero, optimus s, epic and now the shift. Usually just messing with it will fix the issue no problem. Pull the card reboot etc. Worse come to worse back your card up and reformat. That fixed it for me before.

Have any theories on why this happens?
I haven't had this problem but my Moment would occasionally tell me the SD card was damaged when I knew it wasn't. Figured out that just plugging it into the PC and having Windows scan the drive for errors would fix the problem. Maybe it might work for this too...?
I'm guessing that the SD card doesn't sit in the card slot and recessed area very well. Sometimes, over time, the card might be jostled by handling of the phone like if it gets bumped. The contacts lose a solid connection with the other half of the contacts inside the phone and an error happens. In some cases with some phones, I speculate when a card shift happens during a write cycle to it, the file allocation table doesn't get updated correctly, thus temporarily corrupting the card. Seems as if a format fixes it sometimes. That's my guess. When I put a piece of thick paper, less than a millimeter in thickness, on top of the card, and the paper is the same shape of the card, and the weight of the battery on it helps keep the card from having the tendency to move around in the card socket. The errors don't seem to happen again for me.
Why does this crap happen to me? The spring loaded card sockets on phones, I've never had this problem. They seem to hold the card in place very well. It's probably a cost issue because a plastic bar to hold the card down is cheaper than the metal spring loaded locking card mechanism.
It happened again. It seemed to happen when I tried to open a file. It seems like it only happened when I messed with the file. I deleted it and so far so good. It seems weird that a file would make the card go into read only mode.
I had it happen once. It was when I was disconnecting from the computer.
I always eject from computer, then select charge only before disconnecting. I read that on an EVO forum

I managed to have this happen on my Hero with an 8GB class 2 card. I returned it and upgraded to a class 6. Also I made sure to always properly eject the USB in Windows after that. Not a problem since. Knock on wood.

it happened rarely on my Moment but not on the Evo Shift . usually a reboot cleared this problem for my phone

Yup, this works great
It's happened to me before, but on my Hero. Haven't had it happen on my Evo Shift yet.
Only thing that's happened is one time I had my phone set as a disk drive when connected to my PC. A friend of mine called me and it couldn't read the ringtone from the SD card, and I got an error regarding DRM not being installed. Once I disconnected the phone from the PC, everything worked just fine.
Hi all,
For some reason my Atrix has stopped recognising my external SD card - I've tried multiple cards, formatted them etc etc and still nothing. Has anyone else had this problem?
Cheers
No, are you sure its in all the way? Make sure its mounted too and if its plugged in set the USB mode to "none" and wait a minute - just covering the basics

When you formatted make sure you re-mounted

Thanks for the responses.
The card is all the way in, but it appears the phone doesn't recognise it at all. In the SD card settings it doesn't show anything is inserted, so I can't mount it. In the file explorer, when I choose SD Card it says 'Insert SD Card'.
It was previously working :/
Did you ever try and force it in or rip it out? In which case the sensors could have been damaged on the phone, try the sd's on a different phone, if it works then its deffinitely the atrix

It could also be that the sd's. Are formatted incorrectly so that the system doesn't recognise them

I had this problem with my Atrix, but it was a physical problem, not software.
You might need to bend two pins to make contact so that the Atrix can read the card.

At the very bottom is a picture of the phone with the back off. If you look at the SD card slot using the Huge View, you will see two small plates on the lower left of the picture (at the end of the SD card slot) that are slightly parted. When you put your card in, those two plates must touch for the SD card to be recognized.
Push them very slightly to make them closer and try again.
There's a lot of mounting, inserting, hardware and software going on in this thread.
Although I don't recommend forcing it in. It may not be accustomed to such force.
Ok all gutter thinking aside, is it just your SD cards? Maybe brand issues? If not, have you tried INSERTING someone else's....card to see if it makes a SOLID connection to the PORT? (Last one I promise).
Try it in a different phone, if it doesn't work its the sdcard if it does then its your atrix and you should either fix it or claim warranty

Thanks again for the responses.
I have tried several cards in there now, to no avail. The phone did previously recognise the SD cards but it hasn't worked in about a week now. Unfortunately, I'm in the UK and I bought my Atrix from the US - I'm guessing Motorola will probably kick up a fuss regarding the warranty...
Cheers

Did you at least take a look at the pins to see if they're in contact when the SD card is inserted?
I had the exact same problem! It did appear to be the pins not making contact, however in my phone i didn't need to bend anything i just needed to slide the card a little unconventionally.
Basically if you are holding your phone with the battery facing you and the side with the sd card at the bottom left of the phone, place your finger on the card once it has already been inserted and slide it down as much as possible. In my phone it turned out there was a tiny little wiggle room in that direction, and when i pushed it it recognized right away and stayed that way. Maybe yours is the same!
Good luck!
It does appear to be the pins - Thanks guys!

Glad you resolved it!
Well, after working without an issue since february both on LP and now MM, the phone is now saying the SD card (sandisk ultra 32gb HC I class 10) is corrupted and gives a notification to fix it. So, not wanting to lose all her pictures, videos and music on the card, I pop it in my laptop to see if it can be repaired. Windows 10 detected a problem, fixed it and I thought we were good. Put back in phone, says it's corrupted. Put in every other phone I have that I can and the card works totally fine. I put back in my computer, back up the entire card and then try the format (as external storage) on the DT2 but it fails with error command '57 volume partition disk:179,64 public' failed with '400 57 Command failed' . I have googled this and haven't come up with much other than other moto phones are having the issue too as well as some threads on xda for the X force but no one has an answer.
Anyone have any idea how to correct this? I have tried all 6 SD cards I own in the phone and all do the same thing but work totally fine in other phones so I know it's not the card. I have downloaded the software upgrade and repair tool from verizon and ran the repair with didn't help. I have read that others have FDR to no avail. I have also read that some have gotten replacement phones that reacted the exact same way. I formatted on my computer both quick and full and also formatted the card in another MM phone but nothing is working! This is obviously an issue with the phone firmware/software and once it fails to format, the phone doesn't recognize any SD card put in the phone until rebooted. Once rebooted, the phone again says it's corrupted but it's not recognized at all, meaning I can't even use a 3rd party app like sandisk's own to try to format. This is so frustrating.
I have a moto x force which doesnt recognise any sd cards out of the box but because bought from ebay i have no warranty to fall back on. I suggest iff you have a warranty you should send it back because i think some of these phones were shipped with a defective sd reader good luck.
had the same problem before. I restore the default rom and all is good.
Sent from my XT1580 using Tapatalk
I did that too flashed the official rom again but still a no go.
I don't have the ability to clean flash the official software on the DT2. All I have is the Verizon software upgrade/repair utility which I already ran the repair. Is it likely that this is an actual hardware issue?
I have the exactly same issue.
Motorola representative asked me to take my phone do a repair service but that's not an option here because their authorized repair service says everything is water damage so they don't honor the warranty. I have this issue for months now, still waiting for an update since I belive it's software related.
I can't recommend this phone or Motorola to anyone.
It's not software related I can tell you that because I flashed cm12.1 after rooting my x force and still sd card not working.
I did an "Advanced" RMA through moto's website. Got the replacement last week and the same SD card that the other phone said was corrupted has been working fine. It's definitely hardware related. I sent my wife's phone back to moto and it should be there this Friday. If they try to tell me it's water or physical damage, I don't know what I'll do. I checked everything before I sent it back and there was no signs of water damage and only normal wear and tear for the few bumps and drops it took. No cracked screen or camera lens, there are some scratches and indentations on the shattershield top layer and some marks on the metal rim. To me, that is normal wear and tear for a phone they market as being able to withstand much more abuse than that. We'll see but again, the replacement is working fine.
Side note: I do think it's sort of BS that in order to get a warranty replacement that is how my wife designed the phone, we have to pay moto $25 to send a replacement and have a hold on a CC for $250. On top of that, it took them 4 business days to send it out. If she had just a standard black one, could have replaced direct through vzw, gotten it next day shipping and paid nothing for it and no hold on a CC.
Because I bought mine from eBay they won't honour the warranty whatsoever so I'm stuck with 30gb. Lucky I don't need more than about 20gb.
V20 H918 10j (still on Nougat)
Here's when it happened:
We were going on a road trip so I shut the phone off, took out the SD card (64 gig Sandisk), then the sim card, put the SD card back in and closed up the phone. I did not turn the phone back on. Then put the sim card in my tablet so it would have data. That worked fine.
The next day, I want the sim card back in my phone, so I do the reverse. Boot up the phone and it does not see the SD card at all. I put the SD card in the tablet and the tablet sees it just fine. Back in the phone - no go. I try a couple reboots and nothing. Boot to TWRP, it doesn't see it.
I get home and dirty flash the rom (Ovrdrive). Still doesn't see the card. I try a couple other cards (32 and 64 gig sandisk) which work just fine in other devices and the computer and the phone either doesn't see the cards or it says they are corrupt. So I format a 32 gig card (I did it a couple times in both xfat and fat32), put it in the phone and the phone says it is corrupt and needs to be formatted. So I select format. The format box is immediately at 20% and then it crashes.
I tried using ES File Explorer on the phone to format it but still a no go. I re-flashed the kernel that I have been using for the last year, that didn't help either. I used contact cleaner spray and then even used a soft small paint brush to try and clean the contacts. Nothing.
I had not put any new apps or made any changes to the phone in over a month before this happened. So.... I think somehow the pins for the card somehow got damaged or just old and something just got bent or broken or tweeked. I have another V20 that got water damaged and I looked closely at the SD card pins and compared to the current phone. I can't see any difference.
I'm posting this in case anyone else has had this problem and 1. was able to resolve it or 2. replaced the sim reader and that fixed it. Sim readers on ebay are cheap, but they have to be soldered in. Something that small is beyond my skill level.
There is a thread for the G6 that talks about this same problem. No solution. Speculation about having the card reader replaced. One person did a complete factory reset twice and that didn't work. So I'm left to believe this is a hardware issue.
Cheers.
