Hi!
I've just moved from a straight 8 years on iOS to my first Android, so please excuse my dumbness!
I receive mails from Gmail and Newton, but only Newton notifications shows the headsup. I don't see any options in Gmail or System Settings to enable heads up for Gmail.
That also happens for Facebook. I don't get a sound or a headsup, just the icon shows up in my status bar.
I've tried using ADB with the command:
adb shell settings put global heads_up_notifications_enabled 1
But the heads up still not showing for Gmail and Facebook.
I don't see "Power Notifications" in my device so I don't know what to do.
This is reaaaaally pissing me off since is something so simple.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Install an app called floatify. Maybe it helps you.

Have you gone into settings and checked under "Notifications"? It will let you set which apps will be allowed to actually notify you. I would suggest also clicking the "Advanced" button from within the Notifications settings menu.

I didnt like the way the emails and messages opened in the home tab, ie it goes straight to the latest message so I added the mail and messages programs from the start menu to my quick links which corrects these problems. However, there is no notifications on the quick links to notify me if I've got a message or not. Is there a way you can get notifications to come up like it does on the home tabs?

You can set notifications to show on screen messages for these events, yeah.
Go to Settings, All Settings, Sounds & Notifications, Notifications (tab) and when you go to message or new email message, you can set it to "Display message on screen".
Hope this helps

Unfortunately not because if I go into settings I don't have an option for 'All settings'. The only option I can find for notifications is under display and sounds, and I can only change the sounds and vibrate for notifications. Am I doing something wrong?

Sorry - it's the settings tab, then Menu, then All settings.
It's frustrating because All Settings is what the settings icon in the start menu used to do, and some people have modified the registry so that it's back that way (me included), so when you want someone to go to settings, you have to actually tell them to go to the settings tab, then menu, then all settings, when you just want the bloody windows settings screen!! lol

Thanks, I never even knew that all settings was even there.I'll see if that works, cheers
The notification wasn't exactly what I was after, with the fix suggested above a pop up comes up saying new sms which is not exactly what I was after. What I wanted was something like on the messages on the tabs where you get a green circle superimposed with a number of how many messages you have. Can that be done?
Ah - I see what you're saying now. Sorry, I misunderstood.
Have you looked at MaxManila at all? That does exactly what you're asking.

Hey folks
I am new to android/galaxy s7 edge...coming over from an iPhone. I had a newbie question...when I get a GMail notification, the phone vibrates and I get an unread email icon in the notification bar. I can pull it down to see the actual notification.
However, the new email does not show up as a popup notification (like an SMS for example) so that I can delete, mark as read it right away without the need to pull down the notification shade. Is that something I can enable?
I hope I am explaining this correctly. Thanks for your help!
No ideas?

Download Floatify from the Play Store. Once installed go through the initial setup. Once finished with that, click the "Heads Up" button>select the first option "Which">select the first option "App Settings"
From there I unchecked all apps and only selected what I wanted. In your case, select Gmail and any other apps you want. The reason I specified an app as opposed to selecting all, is because some apps already do this and I don't want two pop ups for one notification.
Good luck.

Hi there
I have this issue again where I don't receive notifications with Google Inbox app when I receive email.
I had this issue before on my s6 and it was related to power saving. There was a way to fix this and only for a specific app. But now I can't find it even did Google Search.
Also tried to look into it via S8 settings everywhere but can't find it and I don't want to shut off power savings mode.
Any idea how I can disable it just for specific apps?
you'll need to set Inbox to "Apps not optimized"
in battery usage (device maint. > battery > battery usage > 3 dots > optimized apps )
choose All apps then turn off toggle for Inbox.
I've been having this kind of problem with WhatsApp. I see the notification icon arrive but it doesn't really notify me with sound until after a couple of minutes.
Hopefully what @crayonyes wrote is what I needed. Thanks in advance!
Thanks. I did that. Unfortunately still doesn't work. I checked everything, all notifications & sync is on. I even put Inbox as high priority app. Still no notifications.
I've had so many problems with Google Inbox & notifications on my previous Galaxy and now again. Just really annoying it persists.
Not sure what to do now.

Try clearing data for Gmail. This has worked for a few people.
After OREO Beta update I can't disable the annoying WhatsApp popup (showing on top of screen) , somehow the app override my settings config.
I disabled notification on settings - app settings - WhatsApp messages
But after someone send me a message and the annoying popup shows up and the settings went back to default.
Only me??
Same here... Very annoying... Can anyone help?
Tks in advance
do you mean the white head-up notification? if yes:
1) enable usb debugging in dev.settings
2) adb devices
3) to disable all heads-up: adb shell settings put global heads_up_notifications_enabled 0
4) to enable all heads-up: a db shell settings put global heads_up_notifications_enabled 1
Do I need to root my phone to do this?
Guys, I still haven't solved this... Anyone can help? I had to disable all whatsapp notification... This does not make sense at all... Oreo is bugged as hell!!! Please help!

Can't you add the app to game tuner or game launcher (not sure which one) and disable notifications?
I guess it at least works when whatsapp is open.
The only way to solve this is installing an older whatsapp version (prior to oreo) ... I did it and now is working perfectly...
There is a bug with whatsapp and the notifications channels...
there is no error, and google does not do something without being able to customize its options and more referring to notifications.
To disable the pop-up window go to "Settings> Notifications> (go down until you find whatsapp) enter> enter group notifications and message notifications> importance> select" High "(which is just sound).
By default it is in Urgent (which is sound and pop-up window on the screen).
I hope that is the solution that several users are looking for. Greetings.
Anyway to disable notification bar contents as well or disable notification bar in general and get some sort of icon on the top showing there is something to whatsapp related.. going to be honest my wife sometimes sends me some subjective material and I don't want the world to see.
Notification seeting reverts back
Hi
I followed the steps
"To disable the pop-up window go to "Settings> Notifications> (go down until you find whatsapp) enter> enter group notifications and message notifications> importance> select" High "(which is just sound).
By default it is in Urgent (which is sound and pop-up window on the screen)."
But when the next WhatsApp message come in it reverts to Urgent by itself , even if you turn off notifications completely.
Same for others?:
Same thing here. I've done that countless of times. Instead of Urgent, I set it to low because I don't want any sound, and for sure not that super annoying dropdown notification that appears on screen.
All I want, is a little whatsapp symbol on top letting me know there is a message, or if customized that way, a blinking light when a message comes in. Silent.
But to no avail, it always gets back to "Urgent".
I'll try medium now.
Anyone found a solution for this? I have the same issue, soon as i get a whatsapp message it reverts the notification settings! So frustrating!
EDIT: Okay I found something that works for me. In the Settings > Notifications > Whatsapp, I set the profile to be "High", and it hasn't overwritten my changes yet, no popup anymore.

Couldn't find the same importance level under the WeChat setting mentioned sad, why is that some app like WhatsApp has these setting while others don't
No matter what I do I still get the pop up notifications once I receive a new message
Setting the Importance to 'High' worked for me to stop WhatsApp heads up. I have Samsung Note 8 on Oero 8.0.
Thank you thank you thank you. Been doing my head in since getting my Note 8.
can anyone post the whatsapp version pre oreo that doesn't have the notification bug issue?
Setting the importance to "high" solves part of the problem since it disables pop-ups. But that doesn't solve the vibration/sound problem...
Setting it to "medium" or "low" doesn't work since it will revert back to "high" after the next message I receive.
So there's currently no way to solve this : I either get full notifications from WhatsApp (vibration on each message, including group messages, okay no pop-up but 300 vibrations per day is quite annoying), or I disable all WhatsApp notifications and then I don't get anything... Retarded design
It's seriously bugged as hell... Was super fine in Nougat (using Galaxy S7 edge)
Ok
Hasn't this been solved yet? Why the hell does WhatsApp override the settings in the notification channels after you change them? How can this even be allowed by the OS?
I've been facing the same issue for months. I want my group chats to be set to "low" importance and my private messages to "high", which works perfectly fine with Telegram. But WhatsApp keeps reverting the settings no matter what I do.
Any way to solve this?
Exact same problem here, super annoying.

This. Unbelievable....
Hey All,
I just switched over to a OnePlus6T from a S7 Edge. I am running into a small issue with my Calendar. I am not getting Calendar reminders. I have looked into it and found that I am unable to even enable the notifications, I verified the Notification for it was enabled on the drop down notification tray. But when I went the application settings and to notification I saw the message "at your request android is blocking this app's notifications from appearing on this device" In my research there should be a slider bar to enable notification with this. I have provided screenshots of what I am seeing and what I should be seeing. This is the Google Calendar app, which was working just fine and I had notifications enabled on the S7 Edge so I am not sure why this option is missing, I am hoping someone here might have an idea.
I did do a search on the error but nothing appeared to help. I have rebooted the phone and nothing has helped
What I am getting: Look at attachment Screenshot_20181223-143310
What I should see: Look at attachment inCollage_20180901_095823101
Make: OnePlus
Model: 6T A6013
Android: OxygenOS 9.0.1
RAM: 8Gb
Build: ONEPLUS A6013_34_181121
You need to slide down the physical button

Hi Vichao,
I did try that and the slider doesn't appear and the message still says that "At your request, Android is blocking this app's notification from appearing on this device."
Thanks for the suggestion though. The third attachment should show the silent mode is off at this point and there is no app notification option for Calendar on the app settings itself and on the notification bar under Manage Notifications there is no option for Calendar.
bump
+1 : Please help with this!

Really struggling to solve the same problem.
In the app's notification settings, all I see is:
"At your request, Android is blocking this app's notifications from appearing on this device."
No toggle, no button, no checkbox. Just this one idiotically cryptic line.
I have spent several hours trying to work out where I may have made this "request" to block notifications.
The following didn't work:
- reboot
- anything in settings > apps and notifications
- anything in settings > battery
- anything in settings > display
- app notification doesn't show up in notification log widget
- disable/enable app
Config details:
OnePlus 6
Model name: ONEPLUS A6000
Android version: 9
OxygenOS version: 9.0.3
Build number: ONEPLUS A6000_22_181225
Please help folks, this is driving me insane.
Try pulling down notification shade and pressing Manage Notifications. Don't click the toggle, but click the app name to bring up more notification settings.
Thanks for the suggestion. I tried that and was taken to the same screen that I get after
Settings > Apps & Notifications > Notifications > See all
Other ideas?
This is a known issue across applications... Sometimes I don't even get a call and straight goes to voicemail

Go to the actual calendar app->hamburger menu->settings->general and check if "Notify on this device" is activated. If not, activate it. I just checked my phone's calendar notification setting and the notification toggle is also missing, like on your screenshot.

I had the same problem too on my Oneplus6t. Here is what worked for me; opened the app info page->storage->Clear cache + clear storage. Then force stopped the app. Then the notifications automatically turned back on.
