I am trying to use Adfree on my OP5 and although the app reports success the host file in /system/etc doesn't change. The odd thing is if I start the app a second time it reports that the host file is already up to date so obviously it's editing something

You can try using dns66 or dns changer and point it to adguards dns servers or use something like blokada (which i am running) or block-this (looks to be dead though)
I'll look those up as an alternative. So far i can't find any documentation why host files won't work on Android 7.1.1
It's a know issue on Android latest version you need to flash add away system less host file in recovery. It's somewhere on XDA just do a search for something like add away not working in Android 7.

I don't know if this is relevant to you but I'm successfully using Adaway. I'm unlocked rooted (SuperSU) and have flashed TWRP recovery but Adaway has support systemless support in its settings.

Can anyone show me how to access the files on the Fire using FTP or SSH?
Thanks a lot
If you've gotten the Android Market on there, there are a number of sshd implementations available.
If not, sideload one of the sshds from the market obtained on another phone or something like that.
The Amazon App Store seems to be pretty lacking in "technical" apps, and nothing that requires root, as far as I can tell.
So, if you're rooted, try the android market. If not, get the apk somewhere else.
Update: After testing, I found that SSHDroid works perfectly well. Just remember, if you're going to be playing with system apps, you still need to mount R/W.
thanks a lot. it works so well
Try file expert from the amazon market. Great file manager, with ftp server support, http desktop and much more
dropbear on the command line will work if you install the terminal emulator.
I've tried all of the popular adblock methods, and they don't work for me on my rooted Nexus 4.
When I go into terminal and test a blocked domain, e.g. by doing "nslookup ib.adnxs.com", I get
Server: ....some IP address
Address 1: ....some IP address
Name: ib.adnxs.com
Address 1: 127.0.0.1 localhost
***********
So it looks like the hosts file is working in the terminal. But when I go into the browser I still see ads served from, for example, ib.adnxs.com .
***********
EDIT: for some reason my Nexus 4's browser looks in the /data/system/etc/hosts file instead of the usual location that adaway and adfree use, which is /system/etc/hosts. An easy fix is to create a link from the former location to the latter, or manually put the hosts file in the former location.
Try using "AdAway" from the play store.

Tried it, didn't work.
But I've figured things out.
For some reason, the browser is using a different location for the hosts file on my phone: /data/system/etc/hosts . I don't know why -- maybe it has something to do with the method I used for flashing recovery.
In any case, none of the programs like adfree or adaway were installing the hosts list to that location. I added it manually, and voila, adblocking goodness. If any one needs any help doing that let me know.
Which browser.. Chrome? Adaway seems to work with aosp stock browser I'm using.

Same issue in stock browser and chrome.
I swear, I must have done something wrong when I flashed clockworkmod. I had the problem the first few times I rebooted that I had to reflash recovery, and the phone reflashed it back to stock recovery. Whatevs, so long as everything works.
Hello XDA Assist Team,
A few days ago I installed AdAway (via F-Droid) to increase mobile surfing speed. Now I got the problem that while using Wifi, suddenly every app had a 10-15 seconds delay before actually starting to download/ starting to load the web page etc. Once "getting a firm grip" on the connection, the download speed was fine as usual (120 mbit/s). This problem did occur on every app while using wifi, but not while using mobile internet.
So I uninstalled AdAway. Now no application can access the internet. Regardless of wifi or mobile internet, no application managed to access the internet since the deinstallation.
The only host files in the /etc/host folder seems to be the localhost on "127.0.0.1" and another localhost with "::1" . At least that's what the Hosts Editor app said. I installed it via USB to check on the host file.
My system:
Oneplus Two, Oxygen OS 3 (Android 6.0.1), rooted
installed were AFWall+ and Xprivacy. I deactivated, then deinstalled them to make sure they won't interfere. The only other App I installed recently is Cerberus. Except for devouring my battery alive, it did not have any negative effects I could observe.
I tried searching the Unofficial AdAway Thread, but I was discouraged by the 600+ pages. I tried, but didn't didn't find anything useful. I posted my question there as well, but got no reply.
I don't have many skills regarding Android. I installed the OS, xposed framework etc. by closely following the instructions given here on XDA. I have a basic understanding on how to use all these applications but I don't know much about what happens behind the UI. I would really appreciate if you could help me out here and point me in the right direction, prefereably without having to nuke my OS. My last Nandroid backup is about 2 months old, unfortunately.
With kind regards,
Fennec
Edit: My progress:
1. I found a tutorial of how to find and delete the hosts file (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2717261) . It was stated that android would rebuild the missing file on reboot. That was not the case. Now in /system/etc there is no "hosts" file and my Internet still does not work. Hope that helps. I tried googling to find an untouched hosts file that I could copy into the folder, was not lucky yet.
2. Found a hosts file here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s2/help/hosts-file-missing-to-t2276818 . Copied it into the folder. Did not work. Help.
Please help me out.
Solved!
Writing down the facts I realized that I haven't tried disabling cerberus yet. I don't know why uninstalling adaway triggered the internet problem but Cerberus seems to have been the cause. It ran for 2 weeks without problem. Now my internet is free again. Either the deinstallation triggered the problem or it was a very nasty coincidence, coinciding with cerberus making trouble. Or maybe cerberus didn't like the system files being tinkered with and decided to lock a potential remote attacker out.
hello i have rooted a 5.2.1.0 fire stick with kingo root and now i can not get either mouse toggle or ES file explorer to work properly ,both apps are installed
mouse toggle does not do anything it shows the setting screen , but double tapping play will not activate it
ES file explorer works but will not download anything i tried 2 different tutorials, 2 different links that work fine on my PC and tried to download the .apk through Es file explorer and when i click the links nothing happens, when i try to go to the "more" >"open in browser" option as it said in one the tutorials it just backs me out or the app back to fire tv UI
i tried the "open browser option" with both links the one from the tutorial that said to do it and the one that did not, all it does is back me out to fire TV UI with both
i checked the download folder , storage, emulated storage/0/download and there are in no apk file in there, it just won't download anything
apk files downloaded fine on my PC with same 2 links
can someone with a s tick on 5.2.1.0 rooted with kingo root please confirm if they can get either of these to work properly
cant get firestopper/ firestarter home buttton detection working either
Suggest reading app's thread.

Looks like mouse toggle doesn't work anymore but Es, file explorer works fine for me.
I replaced mouse toggle with wukong remote and just use my phone to control the stick. As for es not downloading I had this problem even before root but to get around this I simply add the wanted apk files to my drop box account and install them that way. Much easier [emoji108]

ok so you can confirm mousetoggle not working then?
yes i do not think that will work either one of the link i tried was a dropbox link and it did nothing when i clicked it
i usually just install apk's through adb with cmd prompt i find it is the easiest method for me ,but i saw some other people on ares site talking about how they ould not et kodi arm apk lik to work through ES i just want to know what is going on , is amazon disabling downloads through ES now? i could see if it was just the kodi arm apk link but the links i used for firestopper were from more obscure sites i doubt they have got all those links blacklisted somehow through ES the more likely answer is they just disabled downloads , but who knows

The 1.06 update of the Mouse Toggle for Fire TV app is compatible with the 5.2.1.0 OS update. Simply upgrade the phone app and setup the app on the Fire TV again and verify the status is 'started' and confirm the app updated to 1.06. If you have any issues please send a email to the address in the app and I will help you out.
Note: If the apps 'Status' is stuck on 'starting' then it is very likely another app is unfortunately blocking the single ADB connection. The offending app would need to be uninstalled and 'ADB Debugging' would have to be toggled off and then on again.
Thank you!

Yes, the 1.06 version works on all the different Fire TV models including the Fire TV Stick. It is very likely another app is conflicting as there are some apps that take exclusive control of ADB and never properly disconnect unfortunately. If you can email me at the address listed in the app with additional details I'm confident we can get this resolved for you.
Thank you

What apps do you guys use to block ads and still get OTA updates?
I just got a Mi A1 and I intend to root it and install xposed, but with the OTA updates in mind.
If you guys have any suggestions they will be very much appretiated.

If you're talking about ads in browser just use firefox and install adblock plus in addons.
In youtube install youtube adaway you can search it here
In apps i don't know ?
Magisk systemless hosts + adaway = system wide ad blocking. Only very few apps are showing ads (those are probably using their own ads instead of standard ad servers).
For youtube I use ogyoutube with microg.
Without modifying the system you can still use the open source project http://blokada.org
I use block this! It creates a VPN which blocks ad dns hosts.

I used to have Adaway in my old phone, but I read that it messes with the system host files and thus I would not be able to take OTA updates. Does Magisk have its own Adaway that is different somehow?

I've read it as well (only one guy who mentioned it btw.), but to be honest I do not believe it. I am using the latest Adaway version which has enabled "systemless mode" by default and it didn't modify my system hosts file. But I must admit that I didn't receive any OTA yet and had to always flash full ROM to update my system, so can't guarantee it

Yes, I flash full ROM via fastboot each month (did the same with my old Nexus 5X, so I'm used to it).
Magisk has a systemless adblock module called "Unified Hosts Adblock".
Don't block adverts. Ya, I may sound like a noob & jerk but that's the only way everyone of us get to use free contents. The developer & content creator won't be giving away stuffs for free if they don't earn. Support the Developers & content creator.

I support devs directly, I either purchase a full version or donate to them. If there is only "free" app filled with ads, I see no reason to not to block them. As soon as content creators start serving unobtrusive ads (web, youtube, ..) I'll stop blocking them. Until then...adaway is and will be my second installed app (the first one is Titanium backup pro ). Btw. there wasn't a single ad during past 20 years which I would be interested in, if I clicked on one, it was by mistake.
I use minminguard (xposed module). to update, simply flash full stock rom (keep user data in mi flash tool) then update ota. Unlock bootloader again, boot TWRP and flash magisk.
i had troubles updating to november patch due to adaway. i installed the latest adaway there is, it even said systemless hosts in option.. yet it did modify my hosts file directly - i checked this after i unistalled adaway + magisk
not sure if i did something wrong on my end, just saying that it didnt work for me systemless.. would like to hear if someone managed to get it to work tho
im now using unified adblock from magisk, works okayish

Not sure what went wrong on your end, but modifying system data would lead to fail of Safetynet check. I am running Magisk + systemless hosts + Adaway and Safetynet passes the check, so I assume that nothing has been written to the system. I will confirm once I actually receive an OTA, so far fastboot images were out earlier than mine OTA
