Is installing a s8 port worth voiding warranty? - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

Hello everyone.
I am tempted for quite some time now to install a s8 port, but my device is 4 months old and I don't know if rooting it for a custom rom will be worth of losing my warranty.
My main concern is that the port will have bugs, so I'll be forced to go back to stock, but with warranty void tripped.
I've had every samsung phone since s3, and every single of them was rooted and had a custom rom (apart from flat s7 last year and edge this year), so I'm not new to this thing.
I don't like the laggy app switcher animations in nougat update for s7edge, and the animations trough interface are glitching in general. A downgrade after marshmallow if U ask me.
So, here are the questions:
Is there a s8 port that is as close to stock as possible?
-By that I mean that I don't want any addons, like battery themes, sound mods, custom camera (I'm totally fine with s7e camera), custom systemui, etc.
-With battery life that's same as stock s7e nougat? (I get 4-5 hours sot max with 20-25% left, with knox, device mantenance and many other apps disabled with bk disabler)
-I listen to music with poweramp and use the camera very, very often, so I'd need that to work like on stock.
-Fingerprint reader that works like on stock?
-I also use the palm hover gesture to turn the screen on, does s8 port have that option?
-And most important one, does brightness go over the max limit when turned on auto, again like on stock nougat for s7e? Because I need the screen to be as bright in sun like it is now. When I ported roms on my old s5, it never went brighter on auto, and that's why I always returned to stock.
I would very much appreciate if someone could share their thoughts on s8 ports, which are good and if they meet my requirements, I'd like to know if it's worth upgrading since I know that I'll never get the s8 look on my phone by default, because samsung never updates the interface of the old devices like it does with new ones.
Thanks in advance!

Questions about Cyanogen

I'm intrigued by these custom ROMS for the Galaxy S4, but I want to know what I'd be getting into if I used one.
What, if any, hardware features of the S4 would I be giving up? With the stock firmware, the phone can take temperature, humidity, and barometric readings. Are those sensors still enabled?
Are all the camera features in the stock ROM enabled, including panoramic camera?
Where do I find a list of bugs in the released ROM?

Sensors will always be installed since they're hardware feature but if software doesn't support it it won't work last time I tried it doesn't

Bugs can be found listed in the rom threads.
Unfortunately bugs can differ from user to user. So it's more of a trial and error process. You'll have to find a rom that appeals you, flash it and test for yourself.
In terms of features, you will be giving up the air gestures, the smart stay crap (which never worked for me), and Samsung's camera app.
The CM camera app isn't that advanced. It does have some features, but not as many as the Samsung camera app. And yes, it does have a panorama option.
I've never actually used any of those environmental readings sensors, nor have I seen anybody else mention anything about them in rom threads or in any rom review I saw.
You give up some stuff, but you also gain some stuff. There certainly is a performance improvement over stock firmware. Ram consumption is also lower (I generally have around 1.2 GB free ram), meaning you could do more multitasking.
If you rely on those Samsung features, then stay on the stock rom and just root it.
For me, custom ROMs nearly always beat stock roms, hands-down, and this has held true from my old ZTE blade (Orange San Francisco), two Galaxy S2s, and my S4, probably down to the greater level of user-input that goes into them, rather than the design-by-committee process that OEMs use to try & impose their brand over the vanilla Android os.
I only moved to this S4 (i9505) within the past month or so, so the experience is still quite fresh in my mind...
I agree with much of the advice of the "try it and see" variety, but I also understand that for some of us, we only have the one phone, so when you're using it as your daily device, you don't always fancy going on a magical mystery tour of trying out multiple roms, if it's likely you're just going to go back to the rom you got rid of, and have a massive task of putting everything back the way it was, having wasted a day of experimenting...
1) I hated the bloat that came with the Sammy rom - sure, there's a tool (debloater) that can block certain apps from running, and if rooted, can remove them from the phone - along with a "safe-list" of apps that you can safely remove without breaking any features of the phone.
The bloat isn't just a problem for OCD-esque reasons, these apps take up space, they can run at inopportune times, update themselves using your data, eat up clock time and generally get in the way of having a device that only does what you want it to, when you want it.
Most custom roms tend to give you a (mainly) clean slate to work from, allowing you to pick & choose the functionality you want by installing apps manually - so (like me for example) if you only want to access gmail through your web browser (just like you would on a PC), and don't want a half decade's worth of emails syncing between your device memory & the web, you don't end up with multiple email clients on the handset all clamoring to be by synced 24hrs a day...
Battery life is a MAJOR factor here - I saw a big improvement after debloating the stock rom, and even better since going to CM12.1....
2) Cyanogen (like most custom roms) give more options regarding features that the stock roms bake-in.
For example, heads-up notifications are screwy in the Sammy roms - I'd get a notification of an SMS received in the notification bar. I'd drag-down, double-tap it, but then I'd have to manually un-lock the screen before the SMS app popped-up and displayed the message. Some people hate heads-up notifications full-stop.
Seemingly minor features like these, that after a while begin to really bug you are often controllable in custom roms like CM, or just plain old implemented better, after real-life user input and advice has been given.
3) User control; It's silly how much additional control you can gain from a well thought out custom rom, and the popular ones tend to be well thought out (as they garner a lot of user-input).
For example, in CM you have a additional control over root access in the device settings, fine-tune the interface and gives more fine control over many aspects of the device that if you're used to the Sammy rom you'd think can't actually be accessed...
As to what you'd give up - other users have pointed that out.
All I can say is I'm quite demanding and I've found nothing that I can't do if I need it - for me it has only been a positive.
Some people say the CM camera is less sophisticated than the Sammy one - I personally prefer the simplicity; There's an abundance of high-end camera apps for those times you want to take a studio quality photo, with detailed light readings, composition aids, etc... But mostly when you're taking a quick phone-cam shot, the ease of use is the main factor (and who doesn't tweak their photos at home with photoshop anyhow?)
So a simplecam as the default and the option to go high-end later is for me, the better way round....
I know some of this has strayed slightly off the specific questions you asked, but having made the same change you're thinking of in the past few weeks, I thought that giving some food for thought might be appreciated... Hope it helps...
I very much appreciate the replies. This is the kind of help that's so valuable. Just to clarify something, if an app makes use of hardware features on the S4, it should work as well with the custom ROM as the stock ROM? My motivation in asking all this is that Southern California Metrolink introduced an app to buy train tickets, but it doesn't work with Android 4.4.4. So I want to upgrade. Thanks again.
Unless the app has root restrictions, it should work.
Changing to custom roms you would only lose most Samsung features, mostly because the touchwiz stuff needs the touchwiz framework to function.
That ticket app is not an exclusive thing. It also uses NFC I guess, or a QR scanner. So, as long as NFC or the Camera works you should be fine.
If worse comes to worse, you can always flash back the stock firmware.

S7 Edge Questions

Hey all,
It's been a while since I left the Samsung flock and went back to Sony but this years new Xperia Line just isn't doing it for me and the S7 Edge has really grabbed me. I'm getting it in a few weeks and the amount of info to take on is staggering. I have figured out that the UK model is a differnet chip but similar enough in performance.
I didn't bother rooting my Xperias as it broke the camera, but coming back to Samsung I'm not sure I can deal with Touchwiz again. I rooted my S2 and S3 in almost no time and installed stock or Cyanogen most of the time. My recollections of touchwiz are not great, and Sony ran pretty close to Stock/Vanilla.
So my questions:
Is touchwiz any better now?
Do I need touchwiz for the edge functionality?
Does rooting/rom installing still cause the counter (I forget it's name) to go up? Or have Sammy finally got rid of that. I don't want to lose my warrenty in a matter of days lol
Any other roms have edge functionality
Are Sammy faster with updates these days? I used to go mad waiting for them to catch up!
Sorry for the list of noob questions but it's been a while and I was getting lost in all the threads!
You do not need TouchWiz to use Edge functions. I use Nova launcher and it's working perfectly.
If you like to flash with ODIN, then you have every week an update to flash.
Updates are faster and it has been this way for 3 months now

Brilliant!
Rooting will almost certainly invalidate any warranty. You will also not be able to use samsung pay or nfc.
Touch whizz is not as bad as some folks let on about. It's usually persistent rooters that like nothing more than to play with phone settings all day, every day. Call them obsessives if you want .
Besides, ' ... a few weeks' as you put it is a lifetime in mobile phone terms. There will be an influx of new models by then and the S7 (and other current phones) will be museum pieces : -)
touch wiz has improved a lot from a while back. lag factor isn't really a issue these days. not saying it won't ever lag, any phone can even a iphone. but as far as edge functions u will need a touch wiz based rom if you are rooting i would think because it is part of touchwiz. 3rd party launchers will help u if u really don't want to look at touch wiz but it still needs to be there if that makes sense
as far as updates it isn't all that bad. i know on my note 5 i got mm on my sprint version before other carriers. so that has something to do with it too
This is my first Galaxy since the S2 and IMO Touchwiz is alot better than the iterations that I seen on previous friend's phones.
That said if you do take the plunge and end up not being satisfied with TW I recommend downloading the Good Lock app in the Galaxy store. Pretty much gets rid of TW and moves towards a clean android stock take on the notification drawer.
Good to hear, I recall touchwiz being a laggy mess and so far from the comfort of cyanogen etc.
Thanks all!
Think I won't root, but I might strip out some of the bloatware etc.

No point. Few if any are resource hoggers. Better make sure you only have apps like Facebook active when you are actually using them. They, unlike most bloatware, really can have an impact on battery.

Custom ROM or not?

This is a very unusual post for me but here we go:
I've been rooting, installing custom ROM's etc for about 6/7 years now, no phone has been saved from the rooting process but after the G4 plus I had failed I'm err'ing on the side of caution and after some questions answering with as definite an answer as possible to back up my own research:
I'm looking to install a LOS based rom (always been on CAM/LOS) and I'm wondering:
1, I use the NFC on this phone, does android pay work on an unlocked bootloader and a custom ROM?
2, What is the camera quality looking like on the custom ROM's?
3, I've briefly looked into the magisk thing in regards to banking apps etc, anyone had any joy getting them working?
4, finally, all Bluetooth working ok? I have the Moto 360 so need to ensure this works too.
Thanks in advance, like I said it's a rather unusual post for me but I just wanted to get some answers
Cheers guys and girls
Honestly I haven't even had the need to mess with the software on this thing yet. I'm getting insane battery life and great performance. Now later on the year I might go the custom ROM route but for right now it's pretty damn good stock. Very few things I miss from having root/ROM now
I'm at the same point to be fair, it's like an itch that needs scratching lol. Just missing the themes really more than anything.
Thank you for taking the time to reply
Bettry life and performance in stock rom is great and rom is near stock with some useful enhancement so i think atleast for me there is no need to install any custom rom.Battery life is insane in stock rom and you will not face any kind of issue in stock rom
My pixel and g5+ remain unrooted. I was in the same boat for previous phones (and tablets) and rooting them. At this point, I would have to struggle to think of a reason to root.

Most of the custom roms do not comes with root now a days sl
Android pay should work if you dont root
If you use camera a lot than you will not be satisfied with camera in custom roms
Bluetooth works fine
Again banking apps will not work if you root...
I tried pretty much every custom rom available for this phone. The camera on all of them is a bit iffy. Mostly trouble focusing (especially manual focus and macro shots). After manual focus, sometimes the camera will crash. This is the case for most roms.
I did have some bluetooth issues too. The phone connected to the car without any problems, but I couldn't make any phone calls. It wouldn't connect to the dialer to actually place the call.
I went back to the stock rom: rooted, Pixel launcher as system app so I have Google Now cards and flashed the mod that corrects the aggressive sharpening of pictures. Couldn't be happier. Really excellent phone.
Just an update for anyone in the same predicament.
I took the plunge as the itch got the better of me. I went for the AOSPExtended ROM. Here is some feedback thus far:
Camera: tried the stock camera and the google one. Autofocus is pretty much crap as reported. It's OK sometimes and not the next. Not had chance to try too many shots to be fair so can't give a comment on quality.
Bluetooth for android wear and connecting to a phone kit seems fine, I've not made any calls via the handsfree kit however.
Performance and battery seem OK. Nothing to really report there.
I have root via magisk and the magisk hide let's me use Android pay, Netflix and my banking app. They all previously picked up on the unlocked bootloader.
On the whole its not bad at all. Camera is a bit annoying however I'm sure it will be sorted soon. Verdict is out on if it i s worth the hassle or not yet.

[Q] New Samsung Note 4 owner, things I should know?

HI all.
I'm a new Samsung Galaxy Note 4 owner! Recently upgraded from a Note 3. Phones are years old but are decently priced and still good phones when you're not looking for something too fancy.
Honestly, the Note 3 was the best phone I've ever had and was looking forward to a Note 4 upgrade (was looking forward to the fingerprint scanner, even if not the best, and to the metal edges)
Now, I'd just like to ask for a few pointers on this device. Any custom ROM suggestions? Anything I should know about?
I am doing my fair share of research, I've been reading a lot of posts regarding this device, posts that are months old, posts that are years old and I've gotten myself a general idea of what to expect.
But I think even with all this reading, I probably won't be able to compare what I learn from these posts to someone that has owned a Note 4 for months, possibly years! Which is why I'm posting this thread, to ask those who have had this device for a longer time and will probably continue to use it for a longer time since this phone is amazing!
I just want to ask you Note 4 owners, if you bought a brand new Note 4, what set-up will you prefer? Custom ROM? Stock ROM? Any kernels you would flash?
I know the best ROM will always be stock ROM, but is there any worth-while N7 ports for the Note 4? I'm a big fan of the off-screen memo, the smart screen capture (scroll and screen-recording that records gifs) and also enjoy tweaking the kernel (overclock) for smoother game performance. I've also read that the most common problem with ports is the fingerprint scanner. I'll probably end up doing the work-around since no custom ROM has gotten this fixed (from what I read it's almost impossible without leaving a lot of the stock ROM's assets which defeat the point of a custom ROM).
Currently, I am downloading stock EQI2 6.0.1 which is the latest firmware for the N910T variant. I know that the T-Mobile variant has it's own forum but I usually see that the "Samsung Galaxy Note 4" thread is the most active and sometimes includes things for the T-Mobile variant (was the same case with the Note 3, the T-Mobile forum was dead and the international forum was alive and well)
It's running 5.0.1 software right now, hopefully 6.0.1 is better.
Thank you for your time!
I kindly invite you to try the unified trlte build linked in the [ROM] [UNOFFICIAL] [7.1.2] LineageOS 14.1 [SM-N910F/G/P/R4/T/T3/V/W8] thread.

Thanks for your input, I am currently trying out a Note 7 ROM port, but if it doesn't work out I will try it out
Personally, I prefer to run the stock OS that comes pre-installed on my device and update the OS to the latest version provided by the manufacturer. As I know for a fact that Custom 3rd Party OSs do not have the best post imaging software. Which hinders the performance of the camera sensor on your device.

Been snooping around and messing with a couple of custom ROM's either with Note 7/8 features and S7 Edge/S8.
I really like the look overall to the stock Note 4 UI, but I seem to have a very bad luck with random reboots and some features missing (fingerprint) or not working (night clock).
I was really afraid my phone was doomed with the eMMC failure I keep reading about that plagued the Note 4, but I don't have any problems running stock.
Yup, I guess my motto came true. "The best ROM is always STOCK ROM", even if it looks a bit out-dated.
I'm currently running stock and a custom kernel I found for stock MM. I'm pleased with the results so far, just kind of wish I could boot straight in to camera with double HOME press
Best advice I can give you , owning the phone for 2,5 years, is to never use quick charge and never update the phone or flash custom roms while the phone is being charged.

I am amazed you are not aware of the motherboard brick problem of the note 4 !
Do a quick search and read about the motherboard Emmc problem on a lot of Note 4s.

I did read about it, I just wasn't sure what was the root cause for it. So I guess fast charge is the culprit? Every place I read this people seemed to blame an update either from KK to LL, or from LL to MM. Wow... I gotta think about this one. One of the reasons I love this phone over my Note 3 is because of the quick charge. Man :/
Gotta think about trading that feature in for... you know... a FUNCTIONAL PHONE

IMO the culprit was a heavy update(eg. from lollipop to Marshmallow) being installed , while the phone was pluged in being quickcharged.
This pushed the temperatures to exceed the max threshold of a bad emmc solder on the motherboard on some specific batches of the note 4.

So you think regular quick charge should be fine? The phone doesn't heat up with regular quick charge, so I really hope it's safe. I know that just to be safe, I shouldn't use quick charge. But I guess I'll roll the dice.
I updated from LL to MM via Odin, so it wasn't quick charging :victory:

In my case , my phone gets really warm while being quickcharged even if I am not using it at all.
I live in a warm place though!
If you want to use quickcharge , I suggest you go ahead and use it but without using the phone during the charge.

I have an exynos version so can't tell you much about the snapdragon versions (also never heard of emmc problems on exynos devices, the only problem I have is IR blaster stopped working some update ago and never worked again since), but here's little general advice :
Stock ROM is perfectly reliable and very smooth with little customization :
I recommend a package disabler app like EZ disabler to get rid of bloat. I disable anything that doesn't have a clear use for me . If something breaks functionality I enable it back.
If you don't want to root you can use adhel to block ads in very efficient way .
If you do want to root I recommend magisk . It's the best way to do it because if anything goes wrong you can just uninstall it and everything is fine again , it doesn't affect system partition.
Also system less xposed works great if you use the proper version . I love youtube background mod.
In my experience you should never use apps that claim to save battery like amplify/greenify etc . (In some cases they drain the battery even faster with their continuous background services) The better way to save power is to not install power hungry apps in the first place or disable them with EZ disabler . Also disable animations and just disable functions when you don't use them : Sync/Location /Bluetooth etc .
Last but not least : download and use Samsung game booster : it's amazing for our old gpus : you can lower resolution/frame rates to make games more playable and battery last longer .
These were my quick tips . Hope you enjoy your new phone !

The only small problem I have with stock is that it looks outdated. I know visuals are the least you should look for in a ROM, should be more worried about stability and battery life, but I simply can't deny that visually, stock TW UI bothers me.
But I guess I'll have to get used to it anyway since all the ROMs I've tried have issues here and there, but most importantly I get random shut downs and reboots with most custom ROMs and I lose the fingerprint scanner.
As for games, I heavily play a game called Shadowgun Deadzone. It's not that graphics heavy, but I need it to run smooth. I haven't tried Samsung's game booster, I've only messed around with custom kernels and changing the CPU governor, overclocking, etc... and it runs fine for a little while, but starts chugging after a few minutes in.
If the game booster can fix this, heck I can stick with stock ROM without any problems.
When you say it looks outdated
Are you talking about the launcher?
If so why not try the many other launchers out there? Like nova launcher..

A launcher can only do so much. I'm referring to mostly on things like the notification drawer, the settings and stuff like that.

Questions before buying this phone.

So I was going to buy this phone today. I recently had to sell my iPhone X and I think this phone is good but I have a worry about bloat/software updates and performance. i was going to buy oneplus 7t but it seems like I can't find it in my country
can I just install stock android on this and call it a day? I'm worried it'll still lag and stutter cause I know the stock one is a little stuttery (My step-sister has one!) . I can afford the pro too but this is much cheaper and I never play games on my phones. I just care about UI performance and stability.
Is it still easy to install custom roms on phones thesedays? I remember back when I had an htc sensation it was really really easy to install roms etc.
anyone who can give me thoughts here! I also had my eye on the Galazy s10e but it's really small ;-;
do i need to pay attention to anything like the country and model etc?
They say when you use iPhone you never go back, what happened?
Flashing is almost the same as before except you have to unlock bootloader - easy as plug usb and click a few buttons.
You know it all depends on apps that you have? For me 9t is perfect smooth, but I don't use all crappy apps like - fb, toktok, insta, etc.
As for security - if you don't install weird apps and don't open shady websites, you are safe.
It refers to every device with internet access, so don't think iPhone is special (it has flaws like every OS)
The stock rom in Miui 11 Pie have some stutters when reading fingerprint on Always on Display, on recent apps on the stock launcher with full screen gestures and some on the dialer and some on the youtube app on the title of the video... Apart from those things, it's buttery smooth.
Talking about bloat, this is what it comes with (See screenshots).
I haven't tested roms yet but there's Pixel Experience, Paranoid Android.
I'm still on stock and waiting for Android 10, Xiaomi isn't known for updating Android versions but they update their interface even on older phones.
So it's stock bloat, use Xiaomi adb fastboot tool and stick to what you can remove.
I recommend Nova launcher and YouTube vanced.
As for ROM I used lineage for quite some time, but not yet on 9t - I was always very impressed by how fast it could be compared to stock.
You have to read what are bugs and what it could do as many ROMs have different functionality
Well, i use mi9t since 1 month and I can definitely recommend this phone. Just removed few of stock apps and used my preferred magisk modules on Xiaomi.eu, the experience is great. I am playing few games, not the most demanding ones, but there is completely nothing I could complain about even using high settings. The UI experience is flawless for me, 0 frame drops and smoothness in every animation (but I am not using Facebook app and similar trash), I am definitely beyond satisfied. Even so considering great battery, great display, good camera and low price. Fingerprint is better than enough for me after adding second scan of the same finger. Definitely recommend to at least try this phone!
How to improve battery in xiaomi.eu, android system is draining too much

I was gonna go and buy that but i saw the note 10 and I fell in love! so I actually bought that. still can't believe i spent so much money on a phone!
it's very smooth and i don't see a need for rooting or custom roms yet my original plan after your comments were to get a xiaomi and put pixel experiance on it!
Had samsungs, but now they only have curved edges for s and note, its very annoying and edges only looks nice, but are totally impractical

I had this problem with android system draining very much the battery, the fix for me was to format data and flash the latest miuimix rom and everything seems OK now...

I think you will be more happy importing the OnePlus phone
Mi 9t is amazing phone. Iphone is amazing but battery life I think is better for mi9t or one plus 7t. Iphone software is suited for people that don't want customizations. The reason I don't like Iphones is design-notch is ugly and back camera arangement is ugly. But Iphones have fastest procesors in all smartphones and less issues with laging, crashing. Just dont buy old iphones. I am happy with mi9t, but iphone 11 pro or 11 pro max is much better but the price is a lot higher
