Android headunit with Optical out or USB audio output - Android Head-Units

Hi guys, looking for an android headunit which i can connect to my audison bit one to bypass the crappy onboard dac.
I'm thinking of either finding one with optical (best option) or need one which has a usb out which i can then plug in a hifimediy sabre which then outputs optical to the dsp. Budget is around 500USD. Don't really need any special features apart from that but i'm willing to pay for something which is of quality and is fast and has a good screen.
Cheers

Looking at the xtron octacore's. Would they be the latest/best thing out?

Audio recording.can the usb port be converted into a linein jack.

I was wondering if anyone knows if it would be possible to use the usb port on the hermes and turn it into a line-in jack using the 8th inch adapter that is meant for audio out via software. Reason being is that with a 400mhz processor and 2-4-6gb sd cards it would be nice if I could turn my device into a portable harddrive recording unit for my mixes. Only problem to that is a line-in. Any intelligent responses are appreciated.
totally possible, and i believe a hardware dongle exists already for that very purpose
but there is no reason why you couldn't modify your original headset (other than the fact it uses tiny wires, as a audiophile i like 4gauge, on everything. haha) to assist you.
easiest thing to do would be lop off the mic and wire a jack onto its pads, BUT you will need to watch your levels in ANY case to make sure you are not giving your device wayyy to much power.
Yeah I definately thought levels would be an issue if i decided to just solder somethin up. Other thing is it's mono. Would be nice to have stereo since Im pretty sure it can handle it. If you could post a link to that hardware dongle you were mentioning i'd appreciate it. If its less than a hundred bucks I just assume get that for the purpose of stereo and not to mention not having to bother with soldering crappy little wires.

USB Front Port On Car Headunit compatible with Nexus S?

I was at the car stereo place and found nearly every headunit with a USB port in the front saying that it is compatible with an iPod or iPhone. Question is, have any of you guys tried hooking it up to a Android device? Does it charge? Will it fry my cellphone? I'm leaning towards a Kenwood headunit but just wondering if there are any precautions. Thank you

You should be fine. I doubt it would damage the phone as most smart phones have similar power requirements/charging methods these days. The iPhone's cables are just normal USB cables with a special plug on one end and an Apple logo so they can charge more. Most things labelled "For iPhone/iPod" work just fine on Android devices.
Anyone with a USB port on their headunit using a Android phone?
My Honda has a USB port for the stereo. It does not allow the me to use the phone to control audio through USB as this is not supported like it is on iPod (same with any Android phone, has nothing to do with Nexus S in particular) but it does work in Mass Storage Mode and allows me to control audio through the head unit.
All of this is moot anyway as the best solution is to use a car mount and connect through the 3.5m stereo out to the AUX input. I can then not only use Last.fm and Navigation sounds through the stereo, but also phone call audio gets passed through. It's pretty much awesome and makes me glad I did not spend the extra $1200 on the in dash GPS/touchscreen head unit with bluetooth.

[Q] HDMI + Sound output?

Hi Everyone,
I plugged my A7 through the HDMI port to my projector, it works with no issues whatsoever! But the sound jack doesn't work once the HDMI is plugged. Is there a way to force the sound to work even if HDMI is plugged in? Or even the speakers?
Thank you,
Marc
I have run into this issue with other devices, not the A7 yet though.
Once HDMI was connected the device only wanted to send audio over it and disabled all others.
My projector had RCA L/R out, but no internal speakers.
What I ended up having to do was get a RCA -> headphone jack adapter from Radio Shack and use regular PC speakers from that.
Probably not the solution you were looking for, but I hope it helps.
Possible solution
The option I'm looking at right now is an HDMI switch. It has 2 inputs for HDMI and outputs 4 HDMI and an RCA. I'm not really insterested in dishing out the 70$ for it though.

Nexus 7 in car dash build

Good morning everyone.
I'm in the early stage of putting a Nexus 7 in my dash, of my 2010 Dodge Nitro. I have some brackets coming tomorrow, and will be doing the fitting for the tablet itself. Should be almost a perfect fit (minor cutting).
Anyway, I am going to interface the tablet with either an Audison Bit Ten, or Bit Ten D (the difference being that the Bit Ten D has an optical input, where the Bit Ten only has Aux in). My question relates to deciding which one to buy. What are the possible ways to interface my Nexus 7 with an Audsion Bit product? I know I can get a typical RCA (red/white) cable to 3.5mm and connect that way, but is there any other ways to connect the Nexus 7 to either AUX (RCA) or Optical In, via USB port? I would assuming an OTA adapter and custom kernel would be required, and that's fine. RCA to 3.5mm jack is my last resort and I know it will work, but I would think I could get better quality from something coming out of the OTA adapter via USB.
Anyone?

[Q] USB DAC support?

Can I hook up an usb dac to the nexus player? I want to connect the nexus player through a quality USB DAC to my amplifier (which only has analog stereo inputs).
Currently I have a chromecast and use the headphone out jack of my TV to feed the amplifier, but this is less then ideal.
Would something like this do the job?

Yes, it might do the job. However, i read in the reviews that HMDI audio extractors can cause troubles with video sync and HDCP. Also, I want one with good audio quality. Most HDMI extractors are not reviewed by HIFI magazines.
So a good quality HDMI pass-through DAC reviewed by HIFI people start at $250,-, they are more expensive then their USB only counterparts of similar quality.
USB DACs are way more common. I can get a better quality USB DAC for $150,- (the ODAC by nwavguy)
I read that android 5.0 supports USB dacs (at least on mobile phones). Since the nexus player also has android 5.0, it should hopefully also support an USB DAC.
I'd like to do the same with my Icon Nuforce Dac, so I'm interested in the answer as well. thank you for the question.
Just an FYI that I am using an HDMI audio extractor with a Chromecast on a secondary TV. The TV (Sony) and receiver (Onkyo) are both 4 or 5 years old and were lower end units. Neither had pass-thru which was making me crazy until I figured out the problem (why no audio from the Chromecast)
I picked up one of the J-River (?) Extractors on Amazon. Reviews were mixed so I wasn't expecting much, but it works perfect. I plug the Chromecast into the extractor and run HDMI video and optical audio to my receiver. I've experienced no issues at all with audio out of sync and the sound is very good.
I am not an audiophile & not sure if this will help with your DAC question, but since I had good luck with splitting my audio/video via an extractor, I thought I'd mention it just in case.
I read that latest version of Android operating system for mobile (Lollipop) supports usb DACs.
Can we expect the operating system of the Android TV to support it as well?
