Games locked to 30fps - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

I have recently noticed that games on my friend's iPhone run smoothly at 60fps but in my S7 Edge it seems to be locked to 30fps.
Is there any way to unlock the framerate so everything will run smoothly?

Switch to high performance
Or install "Game Tuner" from the galaxy apps/play store

The 'Save Power' option in the game launcher is set to off and it says 'Frame rate 60FPS' but my games still run in 30fps..

Strange.. Try the game tuner app instead it will let you know if anything needs updating when you open it.
You can also adjust resolution and FPS per game in that app
if not maybe its the android version of the game?
try to test with this > Max Fps
you dont have power save mode on do you? (in device maintenance > battery)

Depend on the game.
Some game are made with 30fps cap built in on android, probably because of several android devices from low to high end, while the same game on IOS run smoothly at 60fps.
If this is the case then you can do nothing.

[Q] Anyone Try 4x Anti-aliasing?

Has anyone tried running a game with the force 4x MSAA on? (Multi-sample anti-aliasing).
Replied in the game thread, but wanted better visibility. I just haven't had time to install a game yet and wanted to know if it works.

Just tried it out in Shadowgun Deadzone and what few jaggies there were at this screen's resolution are gone. Running great with Tegra effects enabled.
Good to know. I want to try it w/Nova 3.
It'll be surprising if this setting doesn't destroy FPS.

Precisely why I'm asking.
That Mali GPU has a lot of bandwidth, which should help mitigate framerate loss with AA on.
I just tried it with GTA3 and as soon as I turned it on the game stopped running as smooth. It would like pause the image for half a second every two seconds or so. If I turn it off runs smooth.

Yeah I'd imagine it differs greatly from game to game. But, you should try lowering the resolution in GTA3 and then turning on MSAA, you should be able to get it to look almost as good with a performance bump.

Game runs too fast in PPSSPP

I am trying to play Brian Lara Cricket Pressure Play on my Nexus 5 and the Game runs too fast for me to do anything! I tried messing around with the settings but I can't get it to work.
There is an option in the settings under 'Framerate Control' that limits the fps to 60 so games that run too fast. Just check that and try to play it.

Galaxy s7 edge performance problem

Hi I just bought galaxy s7 edge, phone is amazing but the biggest issue is performance, most games dropping frames below 30fps even temple run 2 or candy crush soda, sky force, heartstone etc. These games where running on may galaxy s5 smooth I'm really disappointed right now and don't know what to do. Is it a hardware or software issue? Can u help me please?
temple run and candy crush works fine on my phone
ye GS7 has the worst gaming performance in flagship device for years, there is not much u can do without root, and even with root the solution is not optimal to use.
U can however disable gameservice which might help or not, u need package disable pro in order to do so if u don't have root.
You mean best gaming perform. Zero issues here

no one of the worst, the fact that u don't have issues does not mean it's working perfect, u might not be able to see it.
Again not all games effected, mine games currently are Tekken on PPSSPP and Angry birds 2 on high levels 200+, both lags so bad it's not funny, Note 5 on 5.1.1 was light years ahead of S7.

i did everything, i can prove that it's the software that throttling the phone, not hardware.
If u disable DVFS via root, 85% of the lag is gone just like that.

Not at all but it will trip knox and your software warranty will wear off.
I just give up to play Need for Speed No Limits on my S7 Edge Exynos. Is just impossible to play after 5 minutes.
Just as a information I played the same game on a old Galaxy S4 Mini witch has much lower hardware specs, and no problems at all. Samsung just lie when says a S7 is a phone for games
the hardware is there, the software is limiting and yes that annoying, guys just spam their twitter account and try to go to higher ranks, if we all work together something might happen.
Make sure you don't have any accessibility services enabled. I had to have it enabled for a swipe down to open the notification drawer in my launcher, but discovered that enabling any accessibility service really slows down the entire phone.

Disabled Nova Launcher and Geenify services on Accesibility and now tha game runs smoother, and by the way the phone feels cooler, will test more.
At some point slow down a bit but not as used to be.

S7 Edge Exynos GPU throttle

I've been using s7 exynos variant for quite some time and it's a very nice phone but there's one huge problem with it, when I start playing some games like modern combat 5, Hit etc at first I get 60 fps then after some time the performance drops. It's probably due to aggressive gpu throttle as the device barely gets warm. Is there any way to disable the gpu throttle?
Have you tried Samsung Games Tuner on playstore?

My phone is rooted with xposed installed so I'm ready to make some modifications to the system
BUMP
Firstly, i have no idea what modifications you could make as i dont have any issues like what you report.
Secondly, modifying any throttling is inherently dangerous. A slight tweak and your phone could overheat and batteries tend to explode when overheated! You've been warned!
I would suggest you look at whether its an app issue before doing something that could brick, damage or destroy you phone. Its also kinda jumping the gun a little to say straight away its GPU throttling as it could be CPU doing work of the GPU due to a dev error (and thats seriously slow!) or even a delay due to loading graphics from an SD card etc.
Also, it could very well be root related...

Try uninstalling xposed and be happy with a phone which works as it should (and gain the ~25% performance lost because of xposed...)

Thanks but I have had this problem before installing xposed
It's not root related, i know exactly what you're talking about. I sold my S6, got an S7 just because of this problem. Exact same problem. Now i have the S7 edge, still the same. I dont know what's the problem, but it's very annoying.
Works fine on my shield tablet though
All i can suggest now is to wait for Modern Combat Versus, hopefully it will be better optimised, with Vulkan support
Update : So I recently updated my phone with Nougat and the problem still exists BUT I have noticed something weird, As I said before the game loses fps in less than a minute (it's still quite playable but it's definitely not 60fps), when I press the recent button/key and jump out of the game and press it again and get right into it again I start getting 60fps, then again after a minute I lose the frames.

This is exactly what happened to me,and weird thing you mentioned has been there since marshmallow, this is very weird, some games that isn't even gpu extensive also experience fps drops here and there on both my snapdragon s7 edge and exynos s7
Also weird such a beast machine couldn't run psp emulator without fps drop
Been waiting for more than half year for the fix or solution without rooting

Hi, I'm having exactly the same problem with my S7 Edge and I'm getting crazy trying to develop my little 3D game.
Did you find any solution to this yet? Did you try to contact Samsung?
Thanks for help!

I think I've found a solution but it requires root. if your device is rooted then install any kernel manager that supports your rom (I use EX Kernel Manager) and choose the "high performance" profile for both the cpu and gpu. no overclocking is required. now I get full fps all the time. Actually the device throttles the cpu after some time when a resource heavy app is launched (I've done my own testing with on-screen cpu monitor app) so selecting a high performance profile disables the throttling but keep in mind, the device tends to get hotter than usual but not too much. hope this helps

Force any app to run at 120hz and 60hz when youre using apps you dont desire this opt

Import this little profile here to tasker
PLEASE TRY IT WITH QHD
Follow the steps within profile
Beta 2 will theorically will let you run strictly on 60hz and will run you back to 120 whenever you open an app that you desire to be refreshing at 120
Needed
Tasker
Patient
Knowledge on how to run adb commands until there's root.
If it isn't being force on let's say Gmaps but it is set to 120hz most likely it will drop down to 60 to save battery. And this can happen with other apps as well.
Please enjoy and report back.

Does it even run smoothly on pixels? It never ran smoothly on any of my phones, especially when zooming out during navigation, pathetic.
Has anyone successfully used this yet? I'm more interested in tying it to the power mode like high performance or optimized. Is that possible?

I'm using this and working very well. Running all apps besides video playback apps and gmaps at 120hz.
Takes a second or 2 for refresh rate to change but I think this is a great idea in general, app controllable refresh rate

It should
Download the profile and import to tasker
Pick which apps you want to run in each and you're good to go.
That being said I installed kodi and it seems like 120hz.
Easy to tell 120 from 60.
I don't think worth running video playback apps in 120 as video won't run in 120 anyway.
I don't understand how to import this into Tasker. When I click on the link from my phone, it doesn't give me the option to open it with Tasker. Is there any way you can post the actual file here?

When you click link in thread, click import and then click yes, this should open in tasker. Then you click on choose apps and pick which apps to run in 120 and rest go to 60.
You have installed tasker right?
I don't think this is working at all for me. There's a noticeable difference when I enable/disable the setting manually regardless of whether the Tasker profile is applying (which it says it is).

Someone said it does and they're wrong. It seems to run at about 15-30fps, just verified on my Pixel 4XL.
Places where this is evident are any in-app animations, for example if you tap on your blue location dot, it will animate to fill the screen with blue. Or if you search a location and tap its card, it will animate to pull the card up. Or you can just fling the map around. There's no way anybody with decent vision can confuse this with 60fps let along 120fps.

Hi Kev,
first of all thank you for the thread's and tasker profile regarding the 120Hz tingz!
The 120Hz experience on the S20 line imho is ULTRA disappointing!
Not the Display itself but more the way stupid Sammy implemented it Software wise.
First disappointment, the limitation of only FHD+
but this was known even before the S20 line was officially announced so I actively decided to look pass that. Even though most people say FHD+ is enough and you don't see any pixels or whatever, I have to say coming from a S10 with a smaller display and and higher dpi, I do notice how much softer the image quality on the S20+ is! It's noticeably less sharp.
The Second disappointment no one warned me about is the fact that half of the apps revert back to 60Hz!!!
No one told me this! and I ****ing hate this. Maybe I was naive, maybe it's the fact that I had no experience with a phone that has a high refresh rate display, but to my understanding if I set my phones display to 120Hz, everything, the UI and all apps would be displayed @*120Hz! But no! this already is like on the leaked Firmware Screenshot wich shows the "Dynamic" option in the middle! it's not locked.
Just shows again how important root is. The ability to take control of the device you own and not giving control to stupid Sammy dev's...
Your method with tasker works fine, but I had no experience with tasker prior and I only using it during it's trial period. After the trial ends, I'm not going to buy the full version.
Is there maybe a adb command that can globally set the phone to a fixed 120Hz refresh rate? Since I don't need a per app selection.
again thank you for this tasker profile so far.
Thanks for the profile! But there is one issue: it's works only once for my S20, then after launching few apps refresh rate drops to 60Hz ((( Even rebooting my phone doesn't help (
