Very happy with my OP5 and glad to see the back of my S7E Edge. The only thing I miss is the always-on display. Is there a way of replicating this on OP5?
Edit: I should add that I'd like a solution that doesn't kill my battery, like all the apps in the Play Store seem to...
Always-on display is a Samsung feature. OnePlus doesn't have such a feature, it could be added if it's a popular request, but for now, nope.

Hi guys, I noticed that Galaxy S6 doesn't have DOZE (lollipop's ambient display) feature.
I searched on google but the only ambient display feature is for AOSP ROMs with Xposed only (module not working on TouchWiz).
So I was wondering if someone will be able to make this feature for TouchWiz too (Xposed or not).
Thanks in advance
I have noticed once or twice if i get a notification from someone on my edge contacts it acts like a ambient display when i picked it up. Dont know if the screen was still on from it coming in or it turned on when i picked it up. But it definately reminded me of my nexus 6 ambient display with the clock lit at a low light state and the notification on the screen
So thats a good sign of it being possible

Lollipop's Ambient Display is not present in Touchwiz. You can download an app from the Play Store called Active Notifications (and one other app by a similar name with similar function) that basically does that exact same thing - and it should work without root.
(Also, side note "Doze" (not DOZE, an acronym) is not part of Lollipop, nor is it related to the Ambient Display feature. Doze is a new feature in Marshmallow that puts the phone into a high power saving mode when it's not being used.)
Coming from a Droid Turbo, Moto's AOD was awesome. Always showed me the time and icons for any notifications - if I wanted more info, I tapthe notification and get a peek (still on AOD) at the info, then could open my phone directly to that app by dragging up.
In contrast, I find Samsung's AOD fairly useless - even the time is often NOT on or bright enough when I really need it. And if you choose the AOD with notifications, they only work for a couple of stock Samsung apps if you happen to use those apps.
Has Samsung opened up the AOD API to third parties to create their own AOD apps? If so, anybody know of any good ones? Or perhaps turn Samsung AOD off and a third party Android app can emulate it? Right now, as is, the Samsung one seems pretty useless to me. And the 3rd party themes they offer for AOD don't change or add to the functionality - just allow optional looks of the same basic function.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.achep.acdisplay&hl=en
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.anandbibek.notifyfree&hl=en
The last one seems to me to be the most effective.
Edit: You'll want to turn AOD off to use these.
The stock Samsung AOD enables some more optimizations for the display controller, including reducing the number of colours and the refresh rate.
How do I know whether those apps do the same? Is it known how to access the display controller this way, is there an API for that? How could I write an app that uses this?

My previous device was a Moto X and like you I miss some Moto AOD features too.
Anyway, there are ways to tweak a bit Samsung AOD , check this thread: Mod for Always ON Display to Double tap to Unlock possible?? (Nougat)
With our nice AMOLED displays it seems a shame that there's no Ambient Display in our ASUS ROMs. My previous phone had Lineage on it which added it and I've gotten way too used to it.
Does anyone use and recommend any third-party apps to do the same?
I have used Glance Plus which is by default meant for always-on like later Samsung models but I changed the settings so it just comes on with proximity wake (and taking out of pocket) and incoming notifications. Seems good except sometimes the display won't turn off which is not good so I've uninstalled.
I know there's a lot of similar apps available but figured I'd check here first if someone has already tried a few.
In the meantime I'm using Gravity Screen (for the proximity/pocket wake) and Glimpse Notifications for waking on notifications (this app should also do prox wake too but I find Gravity more effective) but it's not the same.
It's not the same thing, but the Zoom does support double tap to wake to see notifications without unlocking.
Since our Mido had received Android Oreo 8.1, I just wondered if Mido could have one setting, probably hidden, called Ambient Display
Yes, it's a feature like Pixel device had, it will bring the display keep on with showing time, received notification, etc
And now, maybe someone, could explain. Does our mido can enable the settings? If yes, what things should we have to make our mido have Ambient Display like pixel had? Or maybe this post is useless because our mido doesn't support any pixel feature?
Show your existence in this post, I just wondering if our mido can move one step front
There is already a "Mod" with this features called XiaomiDoze and right know I know only one ROM, AOSCP, has this.
So, I'm on cardinal rn, there's no such mod that can enable it?
i think that this function only it's recommended in oled displays, lcd displays can't turn pixels off

Yea i agree with that, but it's such a nice feature isn't it?
A nice way to drain battery on IPS display panels.
I read several days ago about how the pixel 4/4xl already allows third party launchers to use the native gestures.
I also read that you need to have gestures enabled in order to utilize the new google assistant.
My question is has anyone that has received their new pixel used nova launcher (my all-time fave), enabled native gestures and was able to utilize the new google assistant?
My new 4xl is on a truck for delivery today and I'm pretty excited.
I'm coming from the 3xl so I know it's not a huge upgrade, but I think there's enough to make me happy with the decision.
TIA
I received my Pixel 4 on Tuesday and can confirm that Nova Launcher works wonderfully with Gesture Navigation / Control... as well as Nova's Google Now Companion & Sesame Shortcuts. I came from the Pixel 3 and absolutely LOVE the 4. It does still have dual stereo speakers, with one firing at the bottom / side but it's not noticeable when watching or listening to media.
Battery life is meh for now, so I turned off a few things to help. Motion Sense is wonky for me but Face Unlock is super nice. I just single tap my screen and vuala! Unlocked if I'm looking at it. Also noted is to find and set the active screen setting where it doesn't dim all the damn time if you're looking at it.

Thanks for the quick reply but does the new google assistant, that's exclusive to the pixel 4/4xl, work together with nova launcher?
TIA

Sure does, of you have Gesture Navigation / Controls active.

That's great news.
Thanks so much for the quick reply.
No matter how hard I try, and I've tried many different launchers over the years, I can' stay away from Nova.
It just fits the way I use my phone perfectly.
Thanks again and enjoy your new toy. I should have mine by early this afternoon.

Thanks.
I know I did a duplicate post in the 4 and 4xl forums and appreciate the quick responses.
This is great news and I had not seen this particular question asked anywhere.
Good luck to all!

How were you able to get this working? My nova launcher says gestures aren't supported and I can't find a setting for my Home app. Pixel 4XL

Sorry for the slow reply, been working a LOT lately. I didn't do anything special to get it working. I'm using Nova Launcher, which said gestures aren't supported as well, but then I enabled it in the system settings, Gestures, System Navigation, Gesture Navigation. I also had to manually set Nova as my Home Screen in system settings, Apps & Notifications, Advanced, Default Apps, Home App. Once that was set in there, boom, done, working... and lemme tell you, after about 10 minutes of fiddling with it and adjusting... it's great! Swipe from left side of any screen = "back" button... swipe up is Home, swipe up and hold a brief moment is running apps, swipe left or right will switch between open apps quickly, swipe up from either corner from home screen and it opens Assistant... good stuff. Not sure if there's more, but that's what I know.
