Hello.
I've been searching various forums for a fortnight now to try and diagnose an SII issue I've been having and Google inevitably brings me here. Unfortunately, the numerous threads on battery drain don't match the problem I've had and the solutions haven't helped.
Around two weeks ago I noticed the battery life on my handset was really terrible, draining in hours. I had been using it quite a bit at the time so assumed this was the cause. However, lately it has been draining within around 6-10 hours even when idle, usually dying completely overnight despite a full charge just before then. I don't have a huge number of apps installed - maybe 20, fairly standard ones like Twitter, Facebook, Amazon, no games and no 'battery defender' style apps. It's not rooted (it's 4.0.3) and I can't root it for other reasons.
The battery drain was a nightmare, basically going from power point to power point just to keep it topped up enough to use and it was draining during idle time and deep sleep. I very rarely ever have 3G, GPS or Bluetooth switched on. Wireless is on most of the time and it generally does have a signal in the two places I spend most time (home and work). It also has a strong Vodafone signal since I'm living in a major city centre.
I tried a few things:
1. Uninstalled all but the most-used apps I had. No change.
2. Uninstalled everything it was possible to uninstall. No change.
3. Installed BetterBatteryStats and CPU Spy. BBS plus many hours of searching kernel/partial wakelocks and so on showed nothing that looked odd at all, certainly nothing taking up a lot of time or regularly stirring the phone. CPU Spy showed it did deep sleep when idle.
4. Factory reset. This included no app installations except BBS, disabling the likes of Social Hub, Gaming Hub and all other stock apps I could. No tethering or wifi sharing, no wifi, no 3G, no GPS, no Bluetooth, nothing running. It was basically a handset sitting there doing nothing. BBS showed nothing odd that I could see but the battery still drains in hours. No partial wakelocks and a tiny number of kernel wakelocks taking up next to no time and occurring a handful of times. No change.
5. I charged it before bed, took the battery out and left it until morning. In the morning it was down at 79%. This seemed weird so I bought a brand new genuine Samsung battery and gave that a try. No change in the 6-10 hour drain but taking the battery out overnight showed no drain now.
6. The weirdest of all. I charged it fully before bed, switched it off over night and it was drained completely by morning. That seems crazy to me. I can fully understand poor software or bugs draining a battery but not when a handset is switched off.
I am lucky enough to be able to get a new handset through work but this issue really annoys me. I took very good care of the phone, never installed anything crazy, didn't over charge it, the handset never got warm at any time, I'm careful with Wifi/GPS/Bluetooth/3G and location services, yet I ended up with an effectively useless "mobile" phone.
Is there anything that comes to mind that could have caused this? Point 5 above made me think it was simply a battery issue and maybe it partly was (with two batteries, how unlucky) but point 6 is just crazy. What could cause a handset to drain a battery under these circumstances?

Take the phone to Samsung Service Centre. No phone should drain that quick when un-rooted and a full wipe has been done

Um...widgets? Some widgets on stock Samsung ROMs kills your battery - I remember AP mobile news is a huge drainer. Try limiting the number of widgets you put on your homescreens maybe?

I sugges too full reflash the stock rom and after count the batter time. If it does not help, it cold be HW error too - maybe it isn't.
Some of you may have noticed that battery life on this phone can be both unbelievable and mediocre. I've been trying to figure out what can trigger and cause mediocre performance and I'm at a loss. The problem is, there doesn't appear to be a smoking gun. No obvious wake locks. No rogue Apps. I have Carrier IQ disabled by System Tuner. Google Now is off. What I'm running right now is pretty bare bones. And the kicker is my phone is sleeping, as can be seen in the shots below. The vast majority of the time my phone was off the charger it was in deep sleep mode.
I noticed my phone in excessive drain mode Saturday so I let it run over night and into the next day, so that BBS and GSam could pick up as much data as possible, including sitting idle overnight and very little use throughout yesterday.
Here are some shots to show the story. The graph, which is definitely steeper than when idle drain is normal, which resulted in idle drain of about 6% per hour. Also as can be seen in these shots, there is not a wakelock problem. Deep sleep shows as 12 hours 38 minutes, Awake time of 1 hour 8 minutes, and screen on time of 1 hour. So, my phone was only "awake" for 8 minutes when the screen was off out of almost 14 hours according to BBS.
I did notice and oddity here though. BBS listed the unplugged status as 13 hours 47 minutes, while the phone's battery meter listed it at 12 hours 13 minutes.
Attached are the shots I took at 19%, as well as a final battery meter shot after charging the phone to full while powered off and restarting, where it's been purring like a kitten in deep sleep.
Part of me is beginning to believe there is a bug with the battery gauge. What do you guys think is going on?
Try clearing data for google play services,google services framework and playsore than reboot and check if things changed.
And i would recommend uninstall the updates related to those apps and let them update itself again.

Done. Although I won't know if any attempts to resolve the issue have worked until the idle drain triggers again (or doesn't).

Well unfortunately that didn't solve the issue. The heavy deep sleep drain again triggered after a bit over one full day. I charged to full last night and let sit over night where it drained 6% per hour with no obvious culprit. Anyone else have any suggestions?
It seem that your signal is week, did you get stable signal and have you tried airplane mode, to find out how much battery drain in this mode?
Also, did you disable LG MLT? This is a massive app from LG, can consumed about 150 MB RAM.
This might sound boneheaded, but what about just resetting the phone. Maybe some system app is causing some type of memory leak and thus draining your battery. Also disable wifi when you're not using it.
I don't think it's signal related. I get an excellent signal at work and the idle drain still occurs. Also, it happens whether wifi is on or not. I have not disabled MLT, as I'm not concerned about RAM, just running processes. Rebooting the phone eliminates the issue, so something is obviously getting hung. The really odd thing is I was draining 6%/hr overnight, all while the phone was in deep sleep, yet my top battery consuming category was the screen at 35%, with just 1 hour of screen on time of 10 hours off the charger. If something was cranking in Android System that caused 40% drain overnight I would have expected Android System to be higher. It doesn't make any sense.
I may just have to factory reset.
My battery's been great until couple of days ago when I turned on GPS and Voice Notification (for speaking out names when phone call/message comes in). After I noticed the abnormal battery drain, I turned off those two options, because that's the only thing I did differently before noticing the drain. However, that didn't help... yet. I needed to do a reboot and battery's been fine again. Not sure if those two were the actual culprit, or just coincidence.
Have you changed any settings right before you noticed the drain? Just a thought.
had the same issue., wakelock detector, BBS, GSAM nothing could show what was eating the battery. i use mobile browsing a lot and almost 8/10 times this battery drain was happening with chrome , chrome beta and firefox browsers.
Only thing thats helping me is the Greenify app . Greenified the chrome and firefox and almost all the cloud apps and the battery is now much much better.

To provide a bit more info on this, attached is a pic of my reboot a couple hours ago (marked by the thin white vertical line). The change in the slope of the drainage line is drastic. Also, notice the small hump after the reboot? The line actually increased a bit, fell, then flat lined. More and more I'm beginning to suspect the battery gauge, but I just don't know.

I have the same situation after charging. Even in"deep sleep" it would chew through the battery. Now I just reboot the phone after charging and it plays nice. The gerbil on the wheel seems to take a break and rest.
To all who have excessive battery drain, did you charge your phone while it is on or off?
Some where in this forum (if not mistaken), I read that there is a bug while charging G2 when it is on. You should reboot your phone after it is fully charged otherwise you will experience excessive battery drain.
Mine always charged it while it is off and never had problem with battery life.
i got the same issue which is very annoying, have over 85% deep sleep, no wake lock, battery draining like crazy, and it happens randomly. I wonder if factory rest fixes the problem, or hardware issue
i have done a bit testing for this random drain,
with mobile signal on ==> huge drain
without mobile signal on and only phone signal ==> huge drain
airplane mode ==> no drain
so i believe it is a bug within the phone software, actually sometimes the random drain started after a phone call
I've been getting the drain too in the past few days. Last time i could fix it by factory resetting, but obviously I don't feel like doing that once per month. What I do know is that flashing another stock ROM (kdz) without factory resetting doesn't fix it. However last night I figured i'd try disabling WiFi (kept it on during the night until now) and I only drained 1% in 5 hours, down from 3% per hour. Perhaps this bug is related to WiFi.
Have you disabled LG MLT? It acts like CIQ for internal LG purposes. I have personally seen it cause mass wakelock in unexplained situations. If I leave everything on overnight under 95% battery, I will get around a 3% drain in about 7 hours. Pretty normal. The first 5% on these batteries seem magical. At 100%, with everything on, I wake to 100%.
Yup, frozen in TiBu. Will be factory resetting however when I get home as GSAM grabbed my attention. Never were system things so high up the list when i had no drain.

I been struggling with this since I got the phone (almost a month now). I've done all the usual:
Removing bloat
Disabled CIQ
Disabled Google Now, Location, GPS
and I have the same apps as my Nexus 5
Just last night I realized that this battery drain only happens after taking it off the charger. This got me to add the word "charging" in my search and I found this thread.
Is this hardware related, or would a custom ROM resolve this? I have the AT&T version.
Ok and which stock rom does not do that?

Probably this is a software issue. Never heard this problem on latest firmware or custom ROM.

Guys could you write which stock rom does this wakelocks for you so we could eliminate corrupt firmwares?
For example I experience these wakelocks on latest F international version.

I got my second android phone (LG G2 obviously) this christmas, and I haven't had time to properly use it (I don't have a micro SIM yet). I noticed that my battery is going empty pretty fast, although I heard this phone has a amazing battery. My friend got this phone too and he told he's been on one charge for about 36 hours with constant wi-fi connection, app downloading, playing games etc. so I figured something's off. I charged the device before going to bed and when I woke up (10 hrs later) battery was on 85% (only 2 MINUTES of screen time!!!!) and I had no apps running on the backround, no nothing. So now I'm thinking is there some easy fix for this or should I return it and get a replacement? Also something weird I noticed yesterday was that even though I don't have a SIM card yet, but 16% of the battery was used by the phone application. I did some screenshots of battery usage today and yesterday too if anyone's interested.
There are literally dozens of similar threads... suggest you start searching.
And I literally have gone through 90% of them so I decided to start a new thead. Do you (or someone) think that a factory reset could help? And the next question might sound stupid, but if I do a factory reset then does the warranty remain? Better safe than sorry I guess
I just played 4 minuts of hill climb racing and lost 3% of my battery, this is not normal. Does anyone even have a solution for this? All I see on other threads is questions and questions, but I don't see anyone saying "That worked and my battery life is normal now"
It's normal if screen is bright. Especially if carrier bloat is still there. Post screens, all you have, and what carrier. The phone could have been sick in a search state.
I don't think my phone is tied to any carrier, it was bought from just a regular electronics shop, but frankly I did a facory reset and didn't realize that all my screenshots will be gone too. Do you really think it's normal that 10 hrs of idling causes 15% battery loss? And it has the stock LG apps (safety care, life square, cell broadcast etc.). What do you mean by "The phone could have been sick in a search state."? My screen brightness is on 70%.
It's normal with bloat in it. They all have bloat stock. 70 is high and can eat at the battery pretty good. I mean it could have software glitched and was struck searching for activation behind the scenes. Use Wake Lock Detector and see what is keeping it awake.
This, almost 20% drop was caused by downloading 3 apps (facebook, facebook messenger and twitter), updating ~10 apps (all done via wi-fi) and rearranging my home screen.
Steamer86, are you sure? My friend told me that he has been 36 hrs on one charge without changing any settings and just downloading apps, playing games and testing the phone.
Your idle is great at that point in time. Facebook is a battery killer. That's a lot of activity with 70% brightness all the time. It's 17% and medium higher side usage and an hour+ of screen time. What are you expecting? At this rate with 70% constant screen and Wi-Fi pushing pretty good you would get almost 6 hours OST. That isn't bad bud.

This night i lost 18% of my battery and my phone was almost all the time on deep sleep.
But i did notice something weird, battery usage shows that Android OS is using up most of my battery and when I press on it and then hit the back button then the Android OS changes to something called surfaceflinger for a millisecond (check the screenshots)

Can you try putting your phone in airplane mode and then turn on Wi-Fi? If you aren't using a cell carrier than there's no need to keep that on.
See how this works in increasing battery life for you.

I've got the 16gb nexus 7 (non 3g).
I've had it for less then a year and the battery life had been great. But starting over the last few days the battery is horrible. After a full charge over night my battery was down to 50% today. And that's with hardly any use. I used it for maybe an hour total and at least half of that time was just reading reddit.
I haven't changed any settings recently. This is all stock, no mods, not even rooted.
The battery usage right new says it's been 13 hours, and it's down to 48% and Android os accounts for 27% Followed by screen at 18% and WiFi at 9%. Those are the top 3 showing for battery usage.
Any suggestions as to what's going wrong it how to diagnose be fix it?

Either your battery is bad or you have a stray process running somewhere.You might want to factory reset it, possibly even reflash your image.

Would the battery go bad that fast though? In my experience batteries usually gradually get worse. This went from losing a few percent of power to losing half power in the span of a day.
I might try the factory reset - just have to make sure everything is backed up. This tablet isn't rooted so i dont have titanium backup on it.

Doubtful it's the battery... my money is on a rogue app!!!

It's possible, that as the previous poster suggests, some rogue app is 'eating' your battery.
The biggest consumer of power is the screen, so ensure you haven't got it set it maximum brightness... and ensure auto-brightness is enabled in settings.
Another thing you can check, is your WiFi setting... on my Nexus 7, I have 'Keep WiFi on during Sleep' set to 'Never'... it's not a setting that is easily found - it's buried in SETTINGS>>Wi-Fi>>overflow MENU (three dots, top right hand corner)>>ADVANCED>>Keep WiFi on during Sleep.
It also might be worth checking if the SYNCING of your respective accounts (Google, Twitter, etc.), haven't been inadvertently changed. Particularly the SYNCING of your Google account... which by default, SYNCs a lot of stuff and frequently. This will keep WiFi awake, and may cause battery drain. Go to SETTINGS>>ACCOUNTS>>GOOGLE and disable what you don't need to be SYNCed.

It's unfortunate that your Nexus 7 isn't rooted, because there are a couple of excellent diagnostic apps available (GSam Battery Monitor and BetterBatteryStats) which provide more granular and finely detailed battery info/history than the standard Android battery info screen... and are useful for tracking down problematic apps that might be keeping the device unnecessarily awake ('wakelocks', etc.).
However, due to changes in Android 4.4 (KitKat), these apps now require root access to read and report battery stats info.
If your Nexus 7 is running any version of Android BEFORE 4.4 KitKat (and some haven't updated yet), then you don't need root to run these diagnostic apps.

It's sometimes the case, with Android, that there will be occasional peculiarities with battery performance... and in my experience, it's almost always the case, it's due to something the user did... some app or widget installed. I'm currently experiencing similar battery issues on my Samsung Galaxy S3, but having run GSam for a couple of days, I think I have the culprit identified. If I can't eliminate the problem, I'll uninstall the app.

Gedblake, thanks for the suggestions. For whatever reason, today it seems to be back to normal. The only thing i did last night was drain the batter to around 10%, turn it off, and let it charge while turned off.
Turned it back on today,used it for about 15 minutes or so playing a game. And now just about 5 hours after turning it on, it's down to 92% which is what I'd normally expect.
I'll try some of your suggestions if the problem re-occurs.
I noticed that my N7 (2012) has been draining quite a bit lately. Watching the battery stats, it seems Google Wallet was eating up some major battery. It was 2nd at 29% with the screen number 1 at 38%.
Not sure what the heck Google Wallet was doing, but I killed it and things seem to have stabilized.

For years I've had the same routine. I use my Nexus 7 all day for work, mostly notes. In between I play, (youtube, E-reader, etc). Every night I plug it in to charge and in the morning it's fully charged and ready to go. On Tues, I received the OTA update for 4.4.4 I noticed this morning that after a full night's charge, the battery only reports 50% charge. Is this the beginning of the end? What steps should I take from here? I recently bricked by GS3 so I depend on this thing now more then ever, any help would be sooooo appreciated.

I'd just restart it and let it charge again. I've updated mine a while ago and haven't had any issues.

I'm on a custom 4.4.2 ROM and I have had intermittent draining behavior as well.
Sync is off, location services off, I turn off wifi manually, and I always clear recents before I have my tablet sleep. I have greenify installed. I'm using better battery stats.
My issue seems to be similar, but I am also having battery percentages jump around.
Earlier today it went from 26% to 43% in the middle of me using it. Without charging. It frequently does this, both lesser and greater values reported. I've had my tablet shut down in the 30% range. I've had it shut itself off on 4%. I've had it drain all the way to 0% and then some before shutting down. I've had it turn itself off and when I power it back on the tablet is thinking it is at 25% or more.
I haven't been getting much more than an hour of screen time with my tablet lately. Clean fresh install of my ROM.
But I've never, until the last couple of days, had it go from a small percent to a large percent active during use. I took screenshots. I even started a thread to talk about it but nobody has responded yet.
Has anyone else ran into this behavior? Is it a sign of a soon to be dead battery?
mine got almost 30% drained on idle, airplane mode, screen off for 3 hours (tested on stock rom 4.4.3. GApps + Swiftkey + BBM + Facebook only)
my nexus 7 never lasted a day, only half a day max.
trying GSam app, hope it helps in knowing what's eating up batteries.

This also seems to coincide with crazy battery drain. The problem is that this doesn't seem to be hardware or even OS version-specific. It's happened on every single one of my android phones since 2010. Every year i get a new phone and think that it'll be different this time, but every year the lag and battery drain appears again after around 6 months of use. When I do a hard reset it's solid and responsive for around 6 months again, then the lag and battery drain comes back.
Specifically, the lag is the type where you hit the home button or open the google search app and it takes between 2 and 15 seconds to actually open. This is especially bad when using google maps in the car. The phone sometimes takes upward of 10 seconds to respond to things unless i reboot and force close all apps (and then the lag comes back after an hour or so).
The battery drain is where I regularly drain 40-90% of my battery life within 3 hours, sometimes with minimal screen on time. Most recently, I had my phone screen off for 3 straight hours on wifi with bluetooth and GPS on and battery drain was about 7-8% per hour. A look at the battery stats often reveals that top battery drain processes include, "Android System," "Android OS," "Google Play Services," "Phone Idle," and "Screen."
The only thing consistent since 2010 is the use of an SD card and some of the apps I have installed. I've removed the SD card and it still lags though, so I'm thinking it's probably a rogue app? Hi. I'm currently looking into this with my V20 H910. I've had decent battery life on my phone until a few months ago. The past few weeks I'm charging my phone about 3 times a day because of the battery drain. I disabled auto-sync, uninstalled some pull-type apps but nothing helps. I've charged my phone to 85% (recommendation for battery life according to accubattery app) and when I wake up the phone is completely dead. During the day I'll have it next to me with the display off and I'll lose around 50% battery in a couple hours.
If anyone out there can help I'd / we'd appreciate it!!!
Going to move this thread to the V20 Q/A section so hopefully you guys get some more help. I have a V20 myself and don't have these issues.

The best app in the world to figure out battery drain exists thanks to one of the members here who has been banging away at it for over seven years.
It's called better battery stats. This is the only app that gives you half a chance of figuring out where the drain is occurring.

Battery stats in android is a toy, it tells you very little.
I had my phone screen off for 3 straight hours on wifi with bluetooth and GPS on and battery drain was about 7-8% per hour.

The drain is high but why did you have GPS on with the screen off. See, its hard to tell if that is normal or not depending on what GPS was doing.
What's your drain like with screen off, on wifi & bluetooth and no GPS
