Annoying "Android is Upgrading..." on bootup - how to fix this? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can't get phone to stop doing this (even though intermittent). I tried wiping Davlik cache with Flashfire but no good. Als o notice that phone gets pretty hot (hot enough to trigger warning cool down alert) across the top third surface area of the phone when it goes through this process.
Help??

Deleting caches does that. And, while in the process of "upgrading" (which basically means it rebuilds the caches), the phone does intensive processing. Which is why it gets hot.

and how do I delete the caches?

You misunderstand. You don't delete the caches, as that causes the problem. That said, I forget because my Nexus 6 doesn't do this, but is it normal to see an "Android is upgrading..." prompt on every boot, especially with no apps to optimize?

Not on every boot. Unless he has some tweak that clears caches automatically.

I don't have that tweak. I just went into stock recovery and did a cache partition wipe. Still optimizing on bootup

Well a fix from Google Play only mucked things up further. Did a factory reset but now I can't get past the Setup Wizard which terminates after it cannot get past "Backup Assistant PLus" because it cannot find cloud storage. I select "skip" and is says "unfortunately setup wizard has stopped" the screen goes black.
So I guess I'm stuck having to Odin back in and use stock ROM. One question - would it be preferred to use the PL1 build vs the OF1 build that was previously on it?? Can I even do this or do I have to stick with OF1?

I dug deeper into fallingup's recovery thread. It never occurred to me that it might make a difference to clear cache and factory reset AFTER doing an update. I did that, which seemed to clear up my FC loop. I fell into a page that asked me what language I was speaking, and was prompted to set up my google account -- which failed. Couldn't connect to data services, not even WIFI. So *228 and Activated my phone (again). Google still wouldn't log in. Went to Settings/Privacy/Factory reset. Selected English, google logged in this time. My phone appears to be completely back to its original stock state. Root is gone. Even bing is back, lovely. Thanks angel12!
... now if I could just figure out why that update.zip paired with the modem.tar that started all this wouldn't sing for me in recovery mode.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
First off, I apologize for cluttering this forum, but I'm at a bit of a loss here. I also failed to find the server for IRC. I'd really appreciate a small push.
Here goes: I got into download mode from the command line. I flashed over my modem with Odin, got a PASS, rebooted fully (shouldn't have done this) with no errors. Next, I popped into recovery mode. From there, I decided to factory reset _and_ wipe my cache -- it seemed like a good idea at the time. It seems like a bad idea now. Finally, I told recovery to apply update.zip from my sdcard. It flat out refused! Complained that the .zip wasn't signed. So, I rebooted.
I then experienced my first FC loop! The culprit is TouchWiz launcher, which just repeatedly closes unexpectedly.
So then I restored the DI01 modem, which didn't change a thing. Next, I ran Stock-i500-VZW-System.tar.md5 through Odin. It updated with no problems.
However, I still have my Force Close Loop, which I expected going to stock would fix.
What I think is really going on is I'd been using ADW Launcher, coupled with an app that switched it to being the 'default'. Something somewhere, must be giving TWiz a hard time.
The good news is I still have adb shell access and root.
* Is there anything I can do to make that homescreen switcher app run on my phone without using a launcher (from shell, for instance)?
* Is there some important point I'm missing about my recovery (I've flashed back everything I changed, at least in my mind)
* Perhaps I could flash something else from Recovery, and that would clear this up?
* It would be great to know what I did that messed this up.
EDIT:
I meant DI01, not "Di05". Nice catch!
It turned out in my case that data wipes were crucial - the factory wipe in system, and the data/factory reset &or cache partition in recovery mode.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=782204
Follow this to the letter. Been there, done that. Home Switcher isn't what went wrong. You'll be fine in 10 minutes.
Wait. DI05??? Do you mean DI01 or DJ05? You need to make sure you flash the modem that matches your ROM. Either easy is fine, and probably didn't have anything to do with your force close loop, but make sure they match or you won't be able to text.
And PDA in Odin.

[Q] Phone is ocassionally rendered useless after a reboot.

I have tried flashing a couple different roms, including Bonsai, TrulyEpic Rebirth. I get everything up and running, and a few reboots later, I turn my phone on, and I'm back at the setup screen, where you enter your gmail acct info, and it teaches you how to use the Swype keyboard and everything. I get through all that, and i just have a barrage of "this program force-closed" windows. Everytime I do that, I have to start all over. I've had to do this 5 or 6 times since I got the phone on Monday.
What I do is:
Flash DK28 with Odin.
One-click root/clockwork recovery 3.0.0.5
Let the system do the ext4 conversion
factory reset, clear cache partition, clear dalvik cache 3x
flash rom
restore all my apps
then, a few reboots later, I end up with the setup screen, and the barrage of FC notifications.
Am I missing something?
EDIT: WHOOPS. I'm half asleep and didn't read that right. When you say restore apps, are you restoring a cwm backup or are you talking about the app restoration build into the setup wizard?l
Built in setup app.
I used to have this problem too, it was very frustrating. For me, I finally narrowed it down to somehow corrupting the ROM by using the 3-button instant reboot method. Since I was using the no-journaling mod I figured that somehow I was forcing a re-boot while the system was writing something? I don't really know for sure though, but I can say now that I use QuickBoot and avoid the 3-button method, I haven't had any problems. Good luck!
Thanks. I have yet to try the no-journaling mod, nor do I know what the 3 button method is. I've been using a widget called "boot control", but I'll switch back to quick-boot (i've used it in the past) to see if that helps.

[Q] Android is upgrading after every boot

OK guys I have a problem and I'm hoping that you could help me.
I rooted my S4 and installed stuff that I wanted, phone was in a great shape until I came across this post that was guiding a way to remove the custom sign when you turn on the phone once you have rooted the phone, so the procedure was to install SuperSU and install the new su binary coming with it, uninstalling previous SU and rebooting. the post was claiming that the sign would be gone and the regular "Samsung galaxy S4" would be shown instead. So I did all those and on the way coming up on the first time the message "android is upgrading" popped up, it's the first time so it's fine, but then it became annoying when it started showing up every single time after that, I took some procedures to fix it as follows:
I,
1. removed application "supersu".
2. went back to the previous SU.
3. wiped delvik and cache. (something amazing about this is that after the manual wiping the number of apps being upgraded is 193, while in its every time boot it only upgrades 120 of them (which is good I think don't have to wait for all 193 every time), but it goes back to 120 after the initial boot after wiping delvik).
4. uninstalled TB.
5. executed fixing permission.
6 reinstalled TB and restored all the apps.
7. re-rooted the phone with motochopper.
8. looked for odex files in /data/ app. (there were none).
couldn't think of anything else and that's where I stopped. I know that this message pops up everytime delvik cache is wiped but I can't figure what is causing it every time.
one more thing, I noticed is that the USB debugging option turns off after every restart, not sure if this is something normal or what, just thought this may be helpful in the diagnosing process. one more thing the post was correct about the old sign coming back though.
There might be an app clearing cache everytime like an optimization app or something. Mine used to when I set rom toolbox to do so

This exact same thing is happening to me, as of today. All I did was clear cache and dalvik, and all of a sudden this is now happening. Gone through all the steps to figure out why as you did, and nothing has worked.
Strange part...mine is also getting stuck with the 120 at each boot. When I do it manually, it's 236.
I ended up restoring my phone, I think that's your last resort as well. I hope you have a backup, otherwise you're in trouble!
1.install lucky patcher
2.go to toolbox tab
3.remove all odex files
No great change

My phone still does the Updating, just now instead of starting at 27 and going to 57, it starts at 1 and goes to 30

On my rooted 4.3 Sony Xperia SP:
I did the lucky patcher thingy twice (it reboots each time, first time the nag happened). Booted up nicely after that.
It will do this if dalvik cache is wiped...one of your apps may be doing this automatically

Hey there this problem is happening with my. Samsung Galaxy S duos 2 also
- I rooted it.
- Then after 2 days Format it.
- Now there is "Android is upgrading" Toast is appearing after every single reboot.
SO WHAT TO DO GUYS....

Apps optimized at every reboot

Since Lollipop 5.1, Android optimize the apps at every reboot (359 apps), it takes around 20 minutes each time. My phone is encrypted and it does that with or without SD card. Did anyone notice a similar behavior?
1) Tried to remove SD
2) Tried to clear Dalvik
No changes.

On my phone a window shows up on a reboot that Android is optimizing apps, but it takes 3 sec. Your seems like you have just upgraded Android OS and it prepares apps for that. It could be that update didn't really go well. I have never encrypted my phone, so that could be something... If nothing helps, factory reset could work, but make sure that your sd card is decrypted before reset(if you have it encrypted too)
Same here, thought that xposed is the cause but it seems that other have this issue without root.

The issue with encryption is that the recovery cannot access the data partition and so cannot fix file permissions which could be an explanation for the issue.
Though rarely it only optimize 1 app usually it's all of them...
Slightly different (and worse) here, phone encrypted and everytime I reboot it hangs, reboots itself and then optimizes each and every app.. rebooting has become an agony
I had root in 5.0.2 then went to 5.1.1 but had to use flashtool as the over the air update kept failing (because I had root? I undid root and still had the same problem).
So when 5.1.1 loaded I had the same issue you are having, and I found I couldn't get root so I flashed it again 5.1.1, still the apps optimising every boot.
So flashed it to 5.0.2 again, took root again. Rebooted and the apps still had to optimise again (far less apps though, like 170 compared to 350 on 5.1.1).
Do I flashed it back to 5.1.1 and now it seems to all work fine.
No idea what the issue was.
BTW I used the UK firmware for both versions.

I already have this issue once. I don't reboot often, but I doesn't happen at each reboot...

Actually this is the same as me, tries to boot ~2 min then reboot and optimize. I will try to reflash the zip pre-rooted.
I have had the same. I was on 5.0.2 with root. Updated to 5.1.1 with flashtool (as OTA no possible due to root). Had extensive battery drain and flashed back to 5.0.2 and then this boot problem. Only when I did a factory reset everything was fine again. I suppose clearing the cache/dalvik cache is not sufficient. Better to save all apps and data (Titanium backup for example), reset the phone and apply the update. Root with pre-rooted 5.1.1, then apply your backup ...

That's what I did, solved the problem.
I've had this problem for quite a while. my phone is stock, unrooted. I have encryption enabled (required to get work email through Mobile Iron). I observe that this issue (double boot w/ optimize apps) starts after a software update. the only way I have resolved this is by wiping the phone completely and rebuilding my apps and customizations which is quite time-consuming. is there anyway to resolve this without wiping? And for the 1st time, the issue came up just last week but this time there was no software update that preceeded it. is this really just a fact of life when using Android with encryption enabled or is this just an Xperia-specific issue?
I have the same issue on my work issues Xperia Z3. 20 minutes per reboot. It's brutal. Not a good look for Android.

Weird behaviour on boot?

Hey,
The last time I updated Cataclysm I had some issues and needed to restore from a backup. Everything went fine afterwards and the phone is behaving normally as far as I can tell. But I am getting the "Starting apps" dialog on every boot. Is this normal?
I tried clearing cache and dalvik but, not only didn't it fix it, that "Upgrading apps" dialog that goes over all your apps on the first boot did not show. Shouldn't it show every time you clear the dalvik cache?
Thanks
It's normal.
Thanks. So the Starting apps dialog is normal. But shouldn't it optimize my apps every time I cleared the dalvik cache?

No not necessarily. If you have not changed or flashed anything.
Really thought that should happen. Oh well, glad everything is fine. Thanks!
I just got a Nexus 5 this past Wednesday and it has 6.0.1 on it, I did a Factory reset after the 6.0.1 ROM flash, On the first reboot it did "Starting apps" at boot for 2 seconds, Messed with stuff for a bit then rebooted didnt see the stating apps again, But after a day and a half I rebooted and saw the Starting apps at boot it lasted for about 5 seconds, So I rebooted just now to see if it would say it again but it didnt it booted right up without saying it.
It's weird im not sure why it does this, My Moto G 3rd Gen did this same bahavior when it was on Lollipop 5.1.1 but with that one it said "Optimizing Boot", Its like the longer you let it sit in between reboots it will do it, everything seems to work fine still but its very strange.
I just found it weird because I don't remember it happening before I restored a Nandroid. And it didn't happen on my Nexus 5 on 5.1.1. Well, truth is, everything is running fine so I won't worry too much.
Thanks for sharing your experience
Yeah same here
