Given the reports of lag and stutter persisting in this new line of Galaxy devices, it would be great to see some evidence of it.
I made a similar thread last year for the Note 5 http://forum.xda-developers.com/note5/general/note-5-scrolling-behaviour-t3195672

What exactly are these bars show me? Higher is better or worse?

There is a horizontal line which is the 60 fps limit (i.e. the limit for a stutter free UI experience). If the bars stay under this line, all is good. If they shoot over it, it can be perceived as stutter. An occasional spike is not too bad, but when you have a lot of spikes it definitely correlates with stuttering in the UI.
You can see in my graphs that my trusty OnePlus One offers a much smoother UI experience than my Note 5. Was wondering if the new line-up is better in any way. Based on the XDA article I don't have high hopes...
If you're having problems with UI turn on GPU acceleration and see if that helps.
Just a few screens, both were taken after scrolling around several times. It's kind of odd because it seemed like every time I stopped scrolling it would spike once it stopped. Probably fine. I also should note that those bars actually seemed to reduce performance in a few areas, such as when using keyboard. It would probably be more accurate to use the adb method so the GPU isn't drawing all of the graphs ontop of the ui. Ty for telling me about this though. Will probably come in handy for testing kernel changes in real-time.

Here ya go. Tho I must say idk what it is, but the homepage of the playstore hasn't scrolled super smooth for me on a single device.
The playstore doesnt cache thatz why it will lag on every device

That looks encouraging! So in your experience, are large spikes (that reach up to the top of the phone almost) rare?

The only time I saw huge spikes was usually right when launching an app or when scrolling for the first time on play store while the stuff was still loading.
Dude why isn't this function more talked about???? This should be part of every reviewers set of tools when reviewing new phones! Why in the world isn't it?? This is the very first time I've seen this little utility and I've been on android since the beginning LOL...wow. This also offers freaking objective evidence on something that has always been a subjective measurement that a lot of Samsung die-hards simply don't want to admit exists. I just ran this on my verizon S6 still on 5.1.1 and I'm sure you can imagine the horror...from what the above poster put up it would appear things are possibly improving with the S7 but one could take a screen cap at a good moment and miss some of the spikes.
I'm not sure if using this measurement tool has me more excited or more mad about what samsung offers as flagship material but it at least gives me a baseline for comparison now, thanks man! I'll be running this like crazy when my S7E comes in and will definitely update with my results.

Dat Facebook scroll :silly::victory: Looking good!
Touchscreen latency issues seemed to be buried with OP2 completely and OP3 at the beginning. There was one great article regarding OP3 xda-developer article and there was promises for better performance with OPV. If you haven't felt and appreciated the buttery smoothness of a Nexus, a Pixel or a iPhone OPV shouldn't be a problem but faster the better, right? So I don't want a phone with latency like OP2 or 3 did. I hope touch latency isn't a problem with OP5 and if it is I hope the problem doesn't get buried like it did with previous OPes.
Post experiences (and what you have compared it to)!
At least in the initial plethora of reviews all of them said the OP5 had a buttery smooth UI and when some compared it to the S8 said it was smoother. I'm not talking about the contentious bench mark tests either. These reviewers had the OP5 for two weeks before the release having signed a non-disclosure agreement.
Did you not watch the launch stream? There was a segment where they CLEARLY focused on fixing this issue.
This is a big problem, none of the reviewers seems to have focussed on. There is this french review which pegs the lags at 88 ms which IMHO is too high.

Haven't had time. Should probably have but segment on launch stream isn't good enough for me because we all should know they aren't exactly 100% trustworthy.
Maybe I'm expecting a bit too much and a bit "ruined" because I use mainly my pc that has a 144hz monitor and a good mouse so it has as fast as available response time and I'm comparing phones a bit to that.
I think user amathur2k posted something worth noting. If OP5 truly has 88ms and iPhone 41ms so that's double difference and I'm sure it's meaningful. It's the difference of good and excellent. But now that I've looked up some articles (can't link them - forum's new user restrictions) maybe all devices are worse than I've expected and I'm expecting just too much from my phone.
So OK OnePlus 5 is fine but I want to see something like 10ms (I know i'ts not realistic currently)

Sounds good based on reviews and especially if they say that in comparison to s8 but s8 isn't directly comparable because touchwiz has some "interesting" UI desicions and one of them is ensuring that touches are registered correctly so that escpecially wipes are ensured. I think galaxy does that by doing what for many is excessive smoothing but maybe better for a mainstream product like galaxy. So I think OnePlus is a bit more raw with it's input handling.
What worries me is that exactly the same was said about OnePlus 2 in reviews and especially now that reviewers have written a agreement ( I don't know if it's normal ) there may have been some pressure to say that it's smooth and as they propably haven't directly pressured the hypetrain definitely has.
Has someone noticed that the touch sensitivity on this phone is a little low as compared to other phones especially Samsung flagships like Note 3, 4 and 5?
I came from a Samsung Note 5 to Mi A1 and facing this touch issue especially in the bottom right corner of the touch screen. It takes just a little more effort than usual to register a touch.
Is it just me or could it be a software bug? I'm on January patch of OREO update, btw.
Tried calibrating the touch with calibration app as well as SGS booster but neither has helped!
Any help would be highly appreciated.
Thankyou.

I've not found any issues (came from a Nexus 6) but only had the phone since yesterday
Not issues here...it works flawlessly! just a little slow when "pinch to zoom" in camera pics... i have a Galaxy Note 8, and MI A1 is a budget phone... i don`t feel a lot of difference...but, remember, a Flagship is a Flagship.. MI A1 is a very good phone...thats a lot cheaper...so, there will be allways differences between them!

Friend, what are the general impressions in relation to Nexus 6, since I have it and I am interested in, because i was thinking about buying. I 'm pretty satisfied with n6 for 3 years. Thanks :highfive:

I am very, very impressed so far. I wasn't expecting much but its a really good phone (for the third day of ownership). It's narrower than the N6 which makes it easier to use one handed and I have large hands. Screen is fantastic too, obviously its 1080p but it's on par with the N6 for colour and clarity anbd not too far off its weight either. Definitely worth getting a cover for it too.
Battery life has been great, had two days out of it so far with 34% charge left but I am not a heavy user (no gaming etc) so it is going to vary. Updated to Oreo and that's buttery smooth. I was going to root and install the Gcam but to be fair, photos are really not as bad as I have read and even indoors with little light they are not as terrible as I expected. One thing I found fun was taking a selfie and it guesses your age and sex when its looking at you. Gimmicky but hey.
Sound wise from the speaker, it's a little tinny, certainly not as good as the N6, it doesn't sound as natural but it is still not the worst I have listened to. I do get a very small amount of hissing noise from the headphones too, but again nothing to be complaining about.
One thing I forgot to do was when my network sent my internet settings, I didn't reboot the phone and I was puzzled for a few minutes as to why I couldn't load Google maps and use that. So if you do buy, don't forget.
So, definitely worth the purchase buddy.
Hi.
I've just bought this phone, and couldn't help but noticing that the touch screen response is noticeably slower than my Nexus 5.
Is it the hardware, or the software?
I'm afraid it's the former, especially considering that this is a china phone, but still, is it possible that not a single reviewer noticed this?
What about you guys?
EDIT: added video to make clear what I'm talking about.
EDIT2: tested the N4, N5, and P9 lite, and I'm 100% positive they're all that much more responsive than the Mi A1.
Does anyone know a way to improve the touch screen response?
Near three months with the phone and I must say that I haven't noticed that this far...
I am facing stuttering while I play fps games, and it's terrible.

You need a phone to compare with.
Ask a friend with a "western" phone to let you try his, and try scrolling up and down on settings page, and you should feel the difference.
It seems like the responsiveness is quite low...I didn't expect this from a 200 € phone.

I don't know if You try to be smart but anyway...
This isn't my only phone at the moment so I can compare with few other phones.
Compared to almost any "western" phone" (whatever that means) within same price range the difference isn't visible for normal eye...
But as I'm not playing games or scroll up/down on settings page as my hobby so the "latency" Yoy are referring to doesn't bother me.
And I can assure You that if the "latency" or lag was common You would see it all over the forum...

I wasn't trying to be smart, I just thought you were using it "by itself" rather than comparing.
I'm not playing any games nor scrolling up and down all day long either, but I immediately noticed a much less responsive touch as soon as I started using the phone.
Maybe if it were true I'd see it all over the forum, but the same happened to me with my old oppo find 5: nobody mentioned anything about the touch screen latency, but it was mile behind the nexus 5, and even the nexus 4.
It's not too much annoying, but I admit it makes the phone feel slower and cheaper.

I noticed that thing while playing some games and on some app it's barely happen. I noticed that on Fleksy keyboard ( not idea other keyboard work fine or not) I seen the same question asked by someone in this forum but he or she talk about the games.
I didn't seen that issue with my galaxy s2 i9100

Sir I can assure you that your unit must be defective or your eye is playing a trick on you(or you are very sensitive about the lag you are talking about.).
I am using both N4 and A1, and I frequently change those two for daily use. I didn't feel any difference in responsiveness.
Just to be sure, I compared those two side by side just now, and I couldn't tell any difference. Just to be more sure, I gave my friends those two and encouraged them to try out. They also couldn't tell any difference.
Not sure what do you exactly mean by touch 'latency' but I can confirm that the touch sensitivity on this phone is a little less than other phones. I used mostly samsung phones in the past, the S and Note series, and also the LG G4 and I can safely say that the touch on a 2014 phone 'Samsung S4' is better than Mi A1.
It feels like you have to push in just a little more effort than usual to register a touch, especially in the bottom right corner of the screen. All this fuss was significantly noticable in the first couple of weeks but now its been over a month with this phone so I'm getting used to it. Muscle memory has gotten a hang of just how much pressure you have to apply to get your touch registered.
I tried third party apps like touch calibrator and SGS booster but they haven't helped! Will wait for the feb patch, if it doesn't fix then will go for a root method to increase the touching sensitivity by manipulating build prop.

I'd really hope so, but I'm afraid this is one way for manufacturers to keep down the costs, while keeping up the perceived quality, i.e, they save on digitizers and give you 4 GB of ram instead of 3.
About the N4 latency, I'm not sure because it's been quite a while since the last time I used it, but the N5 touchscreen response is way better than the M1 A1.

I'm not talking about sensitivity.
I'm talking about the time that passes between your finger touching the screen, and the screen registering your touch.
I wish my english was a little bit better, so that I could explain it well.
This video should clear things up:

I'm not aware of any.
It can be approximated with a camera that records at high enough FPS and calculating the delay knowing that every X FPS a second passes, like this:

I have also Nexus 5 and haven't noticed any difference in scrolling in settings, apps (I don't play games). The only thing I noticed is that on certain screen protectors the screen is often less responsive.
About "western"-chinese phones, the build quality of N5 and especially for example Samsung Galaxy S8 is way worse then A1 or Redmi Note 3 Pro (speaking of my own experience).

You're right, the Mi A1 uses better materials (way better) than the N5.
My point is that Xiaomi is (probably) saving in other things.
A phone isn't just its case; in fact, a smartphone is a mostly a piece of electronics, and my judgement of it depends largely on the quality of its screen, its chipset, etc.
That said, I don't want to turn this into a war.
I'm not even sure that xiaomi is saving in its hardware (maybe it's just poor optimization).
In the meanwhile, I'd like to hear other opinions, and as I'm exchanging the xiaomi with the moto g5s plus, I'll report back to let you guys know how it feels once I receive it.
Well, I realized moto g5s plus doesn't support google camera hdr+, so that's a no-no for me.
I'm thinking about the moto x4, which is also A1, but I'm not sure if a slightly better camera, IP68, and a better touch are worth 100€ more.
I don't think so.
In the meanwhile I tried again the N4, and the P9 lite, and I can confirm that their touchscreen is definitely better than this Xiaomi.
Still, I'd like to know if anyone knows a way to improve, even a little bit, the responsiveness of the touch.

Untill now. I dont know this happen for all mia1 or just some device like you and me. First, I think this is a bug of software from xiaomi, but try some custome rom outside but still so laggy. The last hope is watting some kernel heavy mod, may be the problem will solve. If not, it definitedly hardware issue, and no way to fix that.

I'm considering buying a OP6T but I have one worry. I bought a OnePlus 6 when it came out and it had horrible micro stutter when scrolling through lists such as the Settings app, XDA, Facebook (I know it's not the best app, but still), etc., So what I'd like to know from some people who have the device, is can any of you see any kind of stutter when scrolling through lists? Thank you.
I'm extremely sensitive to this kind of issues (the reason why I left Samsung), and I have to say : OnePlus is the smoothest software I've seen.
My 6T's scrolling is buttery smooth. I believe 99.99% owners will say the say thing. The 0.01% left are probably users with bad habits using bad apps.

Thanks for the answers! I've played around with one at a T-mobile store and it had the same behaviors as the 6 I had. Maybe there was something in the Settings causing that. I've read that gesture nav can cause it, but I'll go to another store and see if it's the same. It's between this phone and the Galaxy s9 Plus for me because I really like Samsung new One UI, but I don't wanna wait forever for updates, so I'm trying to make the best decision because I'm really sensitive to scrolling stutter. And who knows, maybe an actual device won't have the same problems cause I'm pretty sure those display devices don't get any updates, updates may have helped.
I am usually sensitive to scrolling stutters as well... But my 6T is definitely smoother... only place I find stutters is in playstore..but that's with any other phone as well...
