Anyone know?
I've got a friend with tzones who tried his sim in my vibrant and it worked as expected, 3g and all with no settings changes. The only oddity is that with my sim the carrier name is "T-Mobile" and with his the carrier was "T-Mobile|Get More".
If you have grandfathered $5.99 plan it should work, you might need to call CSR to make sure they enable it for android
No, it will not work. I've posted about this already, if you want to go dig up the other thread.
Basically, it will work for about six hours, before T-Mo updates your profile with the IMEI number for the phone. Once they do this, T-Zones access is blocked, and you are told (through annoying pop-ups) to subscribe to the Android plan.
It will work just fine, until they put that block on your account. In sum, 'No'.
Is it possible to get around this restriction ? I'm on the grandfathered tzones plan I do not want to lose it by switching to Android data plan.
There is not a way to work around it. As said above, the system updates with the imei and blocks web access. The pop-ups will continue untill you stop trying or downgrade your phone to a basic handset.

It will not work. You may be lucky and have it work maybe like a day or 2, but you will soon get a notification that you need to upgrade, and your internet will stop working.
good luck.
This is odd. Wireless hotspot (through settings on ATT model) works even though I have a grandfathered unlimited data that does not include tethering. Did ATT accidentally leave this feature in settings thinking customers would only go through their hotspot app?
Will ATT "detect" this and try to charge me or move me to a different plan?
[edit: att app goes to the same place.]
That is strange, but I'm not risking my plan on it, especially with the carrier iq issue we currently have. Be careful, I would hate to see you lose it.

My fear exactly. I've used it just long enough to test (loaded up a single web page).
Isn't there a modification to some sqlite database that disables ATT's ability to detect tethering/hotspots? I've seen reference to it in the Verizon tethering thread, but cannot (yet) find detailed instructions.
Hello, I have a very big issue with my Note 3. I looked into the issue of Mobile Hotspot being restricted even though the phone itself was unlocked through T-Mobile's phone unlocking process.
I really need the mobile hotspot to be used freely since this phone is planned to be used on other countries outside of the United States. In some countries they do not restrict mobile hotspot tethering and you are free to do so just as long as you have the data available. Also this annoys me that in apps like Shareit, I could not use it if I don't have a sim that can use Mobile Data. That screws me up because the app cannot turn on the mobile hotspot.
Would really appreciate help on this very dire situation.
Experiencing countless bootloops already by following that framework-res.apk modding to remove Tethering provision.
Thanks in advance.

A part of your problem can be solved by the free app, Foxit. It turns on the Hotspot for tethering.
I don't know whether the pro version can solve the file sharing while using ShareIt.

Hi. Thanks for the suggestion.
Didn't work. It failed to open it saying the carrier might not allow mobile hotspot.

I've not been around for a while.
I rooted my sm-n900v, unlocked the bootloader, flashed Jasmine 6.1 and voila, the hotspot is unlocked.
See whether you can do same.
Im running stock rom 5.0 rooted and using net 10 service and am able to hot spot to my daughters tablet
I've been a grandfathered in unlimited data user of VZ for about 7 years.
I've used rooted phones for quite some time to unlock the tethering ability of my smartphones on VZ's network.
I'm curious how this feature actually functions. VZ's new "Unlimited" plans reduce tethering speeds from 4G to 3G after 10gbs are used.
Without spelling it out, my main question is whether or not using a rooted phones' tethering provision feature will simulate normal cell usage.
In other words, does Big Red see both tethering through the phone's native wifi-tethering app (with the provision enabled) the same as normal cell usage or does can their system determine the difference.
Thanks,
Anybody have any insights?
I am also curious about his! I am on the grandfathered unlimited plan also, but would change over to the new plan if I could get more than 10 gig on my hotspot. I live in a rural area and most of my internet use at home is on my hotspot.
I currently use Foxfi on my S7 and it works fine. I had it rooted with native hotspot, it worked OK but the phone performance sucks.
I also hear that Foxfi will not work with Nougat either so there are two reasons I need to bypass this 10g hotspot conundrum.
Somebody ???
I feel like I should have put this thread in a more general location, Moderators - can you help me?
It's not really tied to the S7 - it's a more general rooted question.
Thanks,
Anybody?
I would like to know as well
I'm also waiting for a rooted version of nougat with tethering unlocked...

This wont let you have more than 10gb, this is a limit on the server side, nothing you do will change that.
I'm on the grandfathered UDP and don't have hotspot activated on my account. With that I was using hotspot via FoxFi and when I checked my Verizon account it showed up as normal data usage and not hotspot. I connected my smart TV to my hotspot to stream Netflix and it showed up as me using lots of GB's to watch videos. That's all it showed. I'm not sure how you're on the grandfathered UDP and only get 10GB per month for hotspot if you're using FoxFi though, unless you were talking about moving to the new plan, and if that's the case then you would do the work around of removing the SIM card (posted somewhere on these forums) or flash the U firmware and it shouldn't show up on your account as hotspot if the phone doesn't search for subscriber information or is unsuccessful in searching for said info.

What does that string of code actually do and how is it seen by VZ? The 10gb limit is not a cap - it's just a boundary where they're supposed to throttle your 4g speeds to 3g. I'm just wondering what triggers them noticing that. I'm curious how unlocking the native tethering feature on a rooted phone allows grandfathered unlimited plans the ability to use this feature when it's normally blocked.
Does it cover up the fact that the hotspot is even turned on so it changes all tethered data to be seen by VZ as normal cell data (not tethered data)? Or does it just unlock the tethering feature and gives you the ability to use the feature and VZ still knows the difference?

Outbreak is right - there is no 10gb limit with the grandfathered plans. I believe Bart is talking about converting from the old plan to the new plan (like I am) if we can get around the possible downgrade in speeds that's supposed to occur at 10gb.
You mentioned 2 possible work-arounds, but one involves pulling the SIM. Could you provide a link for either of the methods? However, from what I know of VZ is that a SIM is required for the phone to work.
Thanks - keep the suggestions coming.

Here's the link to the SIM removal method, seems to be a hit or miss though and states it's for nougat but I think it would work on marshmallow as well.

Or you can flash the U firmware for the US. It should just unlock tethering completely without actually searching for subscriber information. I don't have the link but it's easily found on the forums. Just know that the U firmware doesn't have nougat at this time.

Thanks, Outbreak.
How does it actually work/function though? Will VZ still be able to distinguish between data used by my cell and data transfered to another device via the phone's native hotspot feature?
That's the whole point of this thread, but I can't seem to get any real answers (or even speculations for that matter)

When I checked my account it showed 0.0 GB of hotspot used and about 100 GB's of standard data. They didn't see at all that I was using my hotspot, only excessive amount of data usage. I wouldn't sweat it unless you're going to end up using like 300 GB's. I even bought the S7 AFTER having that much used and the reps looked amazed but couldn't see how I used as much as I had. I wish I could pull up what My Verizon showed to prove it to you but it only shows the last two months worth of data and I haven't used tethering recently.

Great info.
- So when you used 100GB of standard data, that was all through your hotspot?
- Which VZ plan are you on?
- What's your current phone setup (aka - what method did you use for bypassing the tethering restriction)?
- Where do you find a breakdown of your hotspot data to standard data (is it on your online account)?
- Since you obviously went over the 22GB, did you notice any slowdowns (like they say they reserve the right to implement)
- What type of area are you in (rural - not a lot of cell tower access / high trafficked area - for the purpose of the last question)?
Thanks for all the great info. I know that was a lot of questions, but I think if you are able to answering all of those, I should have about all I need.
Thanks again.
P.S. - it's my only internet at the house, so I can't afford it slowing me down if I'm at the house wanting to stream a movie or something after 10gb - that's why I'm concerned - just felt I needed to clarify.

Not 100% of my data usage was hotspot but a good 90% or more was.
I have the grandfathered UDP from Verizon
At the time I was using my rooted S5 with tethering unlocked through xposed, now I have the S7 with FoxFi
Just log into your Verizon account online and it should have a breakdown. Most of my data showed up under the video category, which was correct because I was tethering my hotspot to my smart TV for streaming Netflix. So it can see what I'm doing, just not how, I believe.

Used to show up there. Here's a link from Verizon with a screenshot
https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/mobile-hotspot-faqs/
That's good information.
So why do you use the foxfi app and not the native tethering feature? Because you're on nougat?
Do you think that being rooted and using the XPosed app is what prevents them from seeing it - or the fact that I'm on the grandfathered UDP and their system isn't capable of actually reporting that piece of information (since it's a feature that's technically locked) - and if I go the new plan that "unlocks" the tethering, they'll then be able to tell the difference and their system will be able to display it since it's aware of what's actually happening?

I haven't rooted my S7 or flashed the U firmware yet. I want to wait until nougat is released for the U firmware before I do that.
Hotspot is built into the phone already. I believe that if it doesn't search for subscriber information that the phone will just enable the connections and all your phone provider can see is that you're using data, but they can't see how. This is my opinion, maybe someone else could enlighten us on the specifics. But I can say that being rooted, using Xposed, or being on the grandfathered plan has nothing to do with it other than removing the check for subscriber information, basically what one user posted earlier in this post.

I found a trick that works to enable the hotspot if you have an unlimited plan with no hotspot included. It works on my Verizon Note 8.
You follow everything in the video, except you only disable the red "mobile hotspot and tethering " app. Not the others.
It helps if you have Wi-Fi and mobile hotspot in the quick swipe down menu of your phone. Once you set up the wrong passworded Wi-Fi all you have to do is toggle them in the drop down. It's easy and fast.
Let me know if the link doesn't work.
https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sou...CC4wAw&usg=AFQjCNGLD66UrxdFo9tyLyXax3CAc0inCg
No go. I just get this error message no matter what when the hotspot is disabled - "All apps associated with this action have been turned off, blocked, or are not installed."
On mine I have Wi-Fi sharing enabled in the hotspot settings and also make sure you only disable the one app, not all 3 like the video. Hope that helps. Not sure if it'll make a difference.
Attached a picture of the package disabler.
I thought I had wifi sharing on already, but I guess not. That did it, thank you!!
not sure if this will work for Verizon but I found this method on galaxy s8+ and works on sprint note 8.
Hotspot hack works here as well. Seems easier than the other method.
1. Download Shortcut Master Lite
2. Search for LTEfunctionality
3. Click on com.test.LTEfunctionality
4. Launch
5. Scroll down to LTE APN Setting
6. Add " ,dun " to APN2 LTE and EHRPD internet under APN type. That line should read default, mms, dun when you finish.
7. Native Hotspot should work. You may have to do this hack again if you update Profile.

I have a VZW N8 and nothing happens when I try to launch com.test.LTEfunctionality. I tried to modify the APN settings through ADB already, and that didn't seem to take either, so I think Verizon just has the APN settings locked up pretty tight.

I'm on the locked VZW, but also still have the grandfathered unlimited.
If I knew that workarounds would be available for all the network specific features, I would have definitely preferred unlocked.
Though I would not have gotten anywhere near the deal I got for the locked VZW...
So in an effort to make this as convenient as possible, I made a Bixby quick command to perform the necessary actions.
First off, I had to install the app WIFI Prioritizer and set the wrong-passworded network as #1 priority, with auto switch on. My other wifi networks all have auto switch off.
Quick command as follows:
1- Turn off wifi
2- Turn on wifi
3- Turn on hotspot
4- Turn off wifi
The timing of Bixby's execution seems perfect, however, there's a big caveat...
It seems wifi-sharing is turned off every time after disconnecting from a wifi network (including just turning wifi off when connected to a network).
I have not figured out any way to have Bixby turn wifi sharing back on.
So basically, unless you never connect to wifi, the quick command won't work without also manually turning on wifi sharing.
If anybody has any suggestions to deal with the wifi sharing issue, please let me know!
I have the Verizon version of the phone. Which is technically unlocked but with the Verizon firmware. If it's like the vzw s8 then we should be able to flash the unlocked firmware to it and the hotspot will just work. But the Verizon firmware locks down the hotspot unless you pay, or find a hack around it.
Dr, so just to confirm you have the carrier specific locked version. That would explain why you need to do this work around.
I have a non carrier specific unlocked phone on VZW network which activates the hot spot just fine without any of this.
Only reason I'm posting is to help pin down who needs this mod.
Im also used to flashing the hotspot apps when I root a new phone, which is over of the main reasons I root however I don't need it with note 8.
Does an unlocked phone on Verizon still get throttled after 15GB of Hotspot Data? I had been using an S3 with Foxfi and never got a message about using Hotspot Data till yesterday. Was looking at possibly getting another unlocked Note8 to serve as a Hotspot if I wouldn't get hit after 15GB on Verizon's new unlimited plan.

The best solution for Verizon phones is to flash the unlocked firmware onto your phone. Super easy and problem solved. The one downside is you will lose vvm and wifi calling, but I don't use those anyway. And you get rid of the Verizon bloat.

@Proweedsmoker: thanks for your post. i relied on it when i ordered my unlocked note 8. i have an unlimited data plan from 2004. the phone arrived yesterday; it "only" took 2 weeks to arrive. i went to verizon to get a micro sim card (since the sim in my note 3 is the larger version). they activated it and first thing i did was turn on the hotspot to see if i could get wifi on my note 3. it worked perfectly. huge relief; no rooting, flashing or potential brick-making procedures. i'm loving this note 8 so far.

It's a great phone but I keep going back to the V20 because of my 3 main reasons: Hi-Fi sound, Interactive 2nd Screen and the ability of picking up a call by bringing the phone to your hear.
