I am going to get my S8 (Exygnos model) the day after tomorrow and need the ability to mount SMB shares from my Windows PC (not using a file manager, but mounting the shares directly under several folders in /mnt/cifs/). I guess stock kernels still don't support that out of the box and I will have to use a custom kernel or custom ROM to achieve this?
While searching the web or this forum I only came across posts mentioning poor speeds when connecting to SMB via Wifi but I assume this only applies copying files using file managers and not when mounting the share directly (for my applications I need >12Mbps on a fast Wifi connection). I was however NOT able to find CIFS or SMB mentioned in ANY of the custom kernel or custom ROM threads. Is this by now normal that support for cifs does not need to be mentioned anymore or could you point me to specify ROMs/Kernels which definitely do support mounting SMB shares in order for me to get the require possibility for mounting SMB shares.

Strange that even here nobody knows the answer (or did I post in the wrong section of the forum). I already asked in the S8+ forum, but as I am getting a S8 it would be better if someone with an S8 would be so nice to use the option Settings / Storage / Remote (or similar, don't know the exact settings name for Nougat) and would post the transfer speed they can achieve for a large when connected to a fast Wifi (the sustainable speed, because it might start fast and then settle to a rather low speed) or the time it takes to transfer a large file (at least 1GB, but bigger would be better) from a file share on a Windows PC to the phone.

Thanks for your effort. I assumed that it will work in principal but what I need is the sustainable transfer speed for file transfers of files with sizes of 1GB and up while connected to a reasonably fast Wifi AP. Could you please take the time to transfer a large file from the share to the phone and post file size and time it takes to transfer the file?
EDIT: sorry, forgot to notice that you did not use the S8 for the test. I ofc need the result from an S8 (or S8+).

Sorry mate i dont have my ubuntu server running anymore it was a school project so cant help you with that, all i know is that the permissions are a pain in the ass
Rather sad that nobody could answer my question.
As reference, if someone also has the same question in the future: the S8 problem with transfers from SMB/CIFS shares is still exists with the most recent FW. Where I get a (slow) 3.5MB/s transfer speed with my Sony Z2 I was only able to get a speed of 1 MB/s. Unacceptable so I had to send the phone back. Will have to look for another phone then... ;/

Hello Everyone,
This isn't anything ground breaking but it might be something that someone has not thought about doing to their Xoom yet. You can easily turn your Xoom into an FTP Server through a free application. And then get an FTP client for your computer. Then use your computer to upload and download files onto your Xoom over the local Wifi or Internet. File transfer between devices is really fast and works very well. I have a video tutorial running through the basics on getting this working both on your Computer and on your Xoom.

Dropbox is cloud based. Your information is saved on a remote server where any device that supports Dropbox can download from it. So you have to upload it to the cloud from your computer, then download the files to your xoom.
This type of direct FTP transfer is similar to a USB transfer. There is no intermediate storage space, like a dropbox, you are directly transferring files from your Xoom to your computer or vice versa.
I personally use both. They have different functionality. If I want to quickly transfer a file to my android device, I use FTP. If I want to store a file so I can grab it later from any of my devices, I use cloud.
grab an app from the market called Websharing.
It allows you to transfer files, wirelessly, from an android device/to a computer and vice versa, all through a web browser..
very handy for transferring stuff without a wire...
FYI, all of the decent file explorers for android have this feature built in. No need to download another app.

Agreed. I was more or less throwing the idea out there. But there are many options and applications both for the Server and Client.
What I like about this option is that it uses such an age-old-tried-and-true method of moving files.
Nothing weird, ****ed up, magical about it like USB on Linux that dosn't want to work 90% of the time
please try wifi explorer available in the market.
I use SwiFTP server on my Xoom & DroidX. The I just FTP files to and from my devices with Filezilla. There might be better ways but this works just fine for me.
With as fast as the USB data is on the xoom (like a movie a minute, if not faster) i dont see why you would want to do this if your already at your computer. If your out and about then yeah, that's cool.
I've done the same on my Nexus One for ages.
The idea is that this effectively gives you ability to push files onto the device wirelessly without having to go and find it. And you don't actually need an FTP client - in Windows, at least, Explorer (not IE, but the stock file manager) can perfectly well handle ftp://... if you type it in the address bar. If you also assign a name to your phone on the router, you can use that instead of IP, so you don't have to look it up on the phone.
Also note that we're talking about running an FTP server on the phone (exposing /sdcard), not connecting to other servers out there. "All of the decent file explorers for android" are FTP clients, which is quite different.
Yea, there's multiple ways to go about this. I just use an app called Samba Filesharing from the market. It just makes your internal storage visible on the network as an SMB share. Works really well. I've also started to use AndSMB to browse my home FreeNAS server as well so that's another option I suppose.
I actually prefer awesome drop or dropbox(when it is working right) but nice thinking outside of the box
I can highly recommend "File Expert",
for me it's the ultimate app/toolkit - all in one
just uploaded 2 GB of music files to my Xoom via that "Sharing" -> "Start Share via FTP" function
Is it possible?
I've found this app. But sadly it only supports NFS/CIFS volumes.
Depends what you're trying to do, creating a ftp server or using dropbox suffice or are you trying to do something more complicated?
Sent from my ADR6400L
I guess I should elaborate a little more,
I'm sharing a folder on my desktop computer and would like to be able to access files on my HTC EVO. The folder is not protected with any sort of permissions and can be accessed by anyone that's on my WiFi network. Ideally I'd like to be able to effortlessly stream multimedia from that folder to my EVO.
Thanks!

Hi,
Has anyone else noticed very slow USB file transfer speeds (like USB 1.0 ?) in Windows 7?
I have been copying movies and TV episodes to watch on the KF and was wondering if I broke anything by rooting etc... or if this speed was to be expected (seems ridicilous for modern hardware).
If this is a USB driver issue is there a workaround i.e. installing a different driver for the device in device manager?
Or alternatively an easy and FAST way to transfer files between the KF and Windows 7?
Thanks
This is a well known issue.
See here for the details: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/amazon-kindle-fire-review,3076-11.html
Possibly can be fixed in a future update/mod as it's not a fundamental hardware bottleneck.
Anyway it's actually much faster to transfer via wifi! I use Dropbox to get files onto my Fire (it's an easy side load that be downloaded direct from the Dropbox website onto the Fire).
Do you know of any wifi file explorer options, i.e., use wifi to see folders on another computer for download?
Thanks.

I use cifsManager. It's available on the Android Market. But first you need the cifs kernel module. You can get it at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1396960
And, here's a nice little tutorial on how to get this done: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1397461

I can see my network shares over wifi with Astro and with File Expert, both file explorers.
Dropbox is pretty handy too!
If you want to do it from the Kindle, you can point ES File Explorer (free) to your share. Use the LAN tab.
right - best choice - i use es file exlorer to stream from other devices (computer,nas,...)
with file expert you can activate a built in ftp or http server and you can stream from your kindle - really easy !
I was considering storing financial and personal information on my phone in the form of files and realized that though the fingerprint scanner is ok to prevent the casual browser from logging into the phone when it is left unaccompanied, a real hacker could easily see whats on there with very little effort.
The Atrix on the face of it looks like a secure phone with the fingerprint reader; however XDA users would know that nothing prevents a thief from entering fastboot and mounting the files and folders to see whats on there. No security app can prevent that.
Using the android built-in option and encrypting the entire sdcard is NOT an option for me at this time. I think its going to slow down the phone operation if the OS files are encrypted and each time it needs to decrypt each and every file and folder. Also it may present issues when testing new ROMs. (And I am dual booting - so my extSD also has a ROM which I would not want to slow down anymore than it already is)
So I searched for methods and apps to encrypt individual files or folders on the Atrix. There are quiet a few in the market and a few are free as well with good reviews. However most -even the ones with the best reviews seem to be just changing the file name and location and not doing real encryption. Also most of these use proprietary algorithms or methods to hide information. A really good app would be one that uses an open source algorithm to encrypt the files and folders - so that the algorithm would be tested and verified as being strong by the world.
Also another requirement was for the ability to frequently sync and update the files on the phone with the PC. The app should have a PC equivalent - that is the file can change on my PC and then I should be able to sync the changed file with the phone in some automated way.
Yet another requirement would be the ability to quickly encrypt and decrypt huge audio or video files. A few good apps could encrypt small audio and video files but not files of size 1GB or more. The apps would either freeze after some time or not encrypt them at all.
Finally I was looking for an option by which the files if I unencrypt them to be available across all apps for the duration of that session - not just in the app that encrypts and decrypts them. So in other words, once I enter the password, the folder should be mounted and available in any app that can browse the phone - until I decide to end or unmount the encrypted store.
I found only Cryptonite doing all of this. Unfortunately Cryptonite does not support Truecrypt containers on Motorola phones. There is some info here on the truecrypt port to android here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=872297&page=7
However I could not get it working with the Atrix. Has anyone had success getting Kryptonite and Truecrypt to work on the Atrix?
Cryptonite also supports Dropbox, but I am not a big fan of storing sensitive info in the cloud - however well known the company is.
Cryptonite does support encFS and I was able to successfully create encFS encrypted folder on my Atrix. I would have liked to have TrueCrypt than encFS, just because I have been reading that Truecrypt has better overall support.
The method I use now for storing and synching encrypted information is:
for the first time only: create the encfs folder on the PC, then mount Atrix as a USB drive and copy the encrypted folder to Atrix.
To sync the encrypted files with the PC, I have to connect the Atrix as USB drive, open EncFS on the PC and select the folder on the Atrix to mount as a drive volume. Also mount the PC encFS folder as another drive. Now sync with the PC using any sync tool like MS SyncToy.
I went through a lot of searching and came to this which I think is good enough at the moment. I would like to hear if anyone else has a better app or method to secure and sync secured files on the Atrix - especially if you have got Truecrypt to somehow work on the Atrix. And I post this so that is anyone else needs this information, it is here.

I don't know about the rest of it, I never used any strong security on my phone nor do I intend to, but I think you shouldn't ever expect to be able to "quickly encrypt and decrypt huge files". You're pretty much asking for impossible here. It's like asking to build a full-featured house, furnished and all, in 30 minutes or less. A lot of data will always require a lot of time to process. Heck, even, say, straight plain copying such a file to a computer would take quite a while.
No.
Your not going to get business class security on your atrix, or any current phone most likely.
LUKS manager is the closest thing to legitimate encryption (not gimicky BS) i have seen, but it has some fatal flaws.
Passwords and such are safe and easy to store with KeePass, which is also on windows/linux for syncing and has years of reputation (also free/open source). It isnt for files though.

Hi all,
Having a problem with bluetooth file transfer between by rooted Nook Color (1st Gen.) running CM 10.2, and Fujitsu AH531 laptop running W7 Home Premium/64-bit.
I am able to pair to two up just fine. However, when I try and transfer an .epub to the NC I get an error message within W7 that says, " The Bluetooth device or computer cannot process files of this type"
What's odd is that I am currently able to transfer .mp3 and .txt files just fine. I tested it before posting this message.
Short of changing the file extension from epub to txt, and then changing it back again with Root Explorer, can anyone think of a more pernanent way of fixing this problem?
On a totally unrelated note, the reason I'm not simply tethering by way of the power cord is that, as of last week's W7 updates, I cannot seem to connect the NC to the laptop. It recognizes what it is. However, it doesn't load the device driver. Kind of maddening!!

Install an FTP server app and you can transfer whatever you want from the internal/external SD card via wi-fi.
I use this: http://ppareit.github.io/swiftp/
You will need to install a FTP client on your computer, like FileZilla: https://filezilla-project.org/
This method is by far one of the best ways to transfer files quickly and securely (you can assign a password for FTP access). Also, it should be quite a bit faster than bluetooth. I get around 1.7MB/s (13.6Mbit/s) max, and 1.3MB/s average. Compare that to bluetooth's max throughput of 0.36MB/s (on bluetooth 3). TL;DR version: wi-fi transfer rate 1.7MegaBYTE/s to bluetooth's rate of 0.36MegaBYTE/s.
I have an FTP server homebrew on my PSP with custom firmware. I have no need for the USB cable whatsoever.
Thanks!! This is sort of one of those "I could have had a V8" moments!!
I went ahead and installed FTP Server Ultimate. Chose that one basically because I found a video review here on XDA when I Googled ftp servers. The free version looks like it's more than I need.
But, with that said, it STILL doesn't explain why the bluetooth file transfer is refusing to transfer an epub file to the tablet. I went ahead and renamed the file with .txt and, sure enough, it transfered just fine. Then I renamed it back and my ebook reader was able to open it just fine, with no obvious corruption from the name change.
Obviously, I probably won't need to use bluetooth transfer anytime soon now that I'll have the working ftp server. But, it would be nice to figure out what's the issue.
Later,
Robert

Sorry, I don't know why your bluetooth file transfer doesn't work for epub files. Try removing file associations for that format.
