New Nexus 7 User needing Unlocking/Root advice

Hey XDA
Iv had my Nexus 7 for a day now and am dying to root and mabe install CM10
i currently have a Samsung Galaxy S3 with CM10 on it...thot its extremly buggy sadly... anyways i have been looking up on how to root the nexus 7 but i need to know if i can instead of using toolkit can i instead just use odin to flash stock rom and cwm and so on instead of having to unlock the device?
i am used to using odin for flashing and cwm but here the nexus is close to the same with htc one x in the way it has that fastboot thing and from what iv heard the nexus 7 requires unlock before it can be rooted, also is the tookit the best way to unlock and root the device?
also does unlocking break the warrenty and if i ever decide to return to stock unroot how do i flash stock rom back onto the device? am not sure where i would find the stock roms for it and also can odin be used to flash it...:S

ok iv used the toolkit 2.0 and its worked great so far...im stuck at not being able to boot into cwm recovery
it installed fine thru the toolkit but whenever i try to hold up and power i cant get it to boot into cwm recovery...
i tryed to reinstall again but still cant get it to boot into cwm am i doing something wrong?

Doing the following won't cause you to loose warranty:
- Unlocking the bootloader
- Rooting
- Flashing custom ROM's and Kernels (however, if you flash a custom kernel that causes your device to explode... I'm somewhat certain this won't be covered)
However, if you are doing anything like that, and have to send the device in for warranty, you "should" factory restore it. Google provides Factory Images for the Nexus 7, which can be restored to your device with semi-ease.

There is a good chance a toolkit also has an easy method for factory restoring, but I don't recommend this at all.

I've never used a toolkit before (until this issue had me stuck). I'm unable to get the Nexus 7 to book into recovery (CWM) after flashing it via fastboot. After giving up, I rooted it using the toolkit.. scariest thing I've ever done.. it did work.. but I'd like to get to the bottom of why a number of people like me seem to be having issues flashing and booting CWM on the Nexus 7.

Did you rename the original system/recovery to .bak first?

No, I flashed it as I normally do.. using the .img file. In this case, CWM.. recovery-clockwork-6.0.1.0-grouper.img
Why would renaming it to .bak be needed?

I had to rename the stock recovery under system to .bak before I could get twrp to work. Or else when I went into recovery it would get stuck on the android.
But I see you are using fast boot it should write over it.

I didn't have to. Flashed twrp and forgot to put a ROM on it and went back into recovery and it was twrp still.

I should of just flashed the image file and flashed it myself but I was in a hurry and used goo im and it bit me in the ass. Lesson learned.

Recovery won't flash

I had to do a complete wipe from the computer and flashed clockwork mod recovery. Since it was likely an old version I had the double 0 partition problem which I fixed by manually moving the files. I tried to update the recovery to twrp, but it won't flash using goomanager. It downloads and says it's flashed but it's not there.
I also seem to have a weird problem where I have to push the power button to get it to boot past the Google screen. If I don't push power it gets stuck there forever.
Any ideas?

Follow the sticky at the top that says flashing a factory ROM using fastboot/return to stock. Start from scratch, get it working, and then flash whatever you want.

This might be an odd question, but have you tried just updating CWM first, and THEN flashing TWRP? Sometimes the flash won't go smoothly with an older version of one recovery to a newer version of a different recovery- not sure why, but that's just been my experience. I would update CWM first then try flashing TWRP.
Also, if goo is not working for you, you could try Rom Manager to update CWM and then flash TWRP. It can flash either. (If you really want to flash via the device).
Otherwise, (me personally) I'd just use adb fastboot to flash a new recovery.

Tried flashing with fastboot, now it won't boot into recovery, just hangs at the Google logo.
Still needs a bump from the power button to get it to boot normally.

Ahh, that sucks! How are you *attempting to* access recovery... via reboot menu, via adb, or via 3-button press? It shouldn't matter, but you could try all three methods to see if any way will give you recovery access. Then, if/when you manage to get in, you could reflash again straight from recovery. I'm going to do some digging to see if I can find a better solution. I KNOW I've read about the same issue before, I know there's a solution... I just have to find it again.
Worse comes to worse, you might have to reflash stock recovery then reflash custom recovery. Might be a corrupt recovery img, but I will check and try some things out and let you know what I find.

Yes. there was a bug in the older bootloader that bypassed/refused access to recovery... so since you restored stock, you probably need to update your bootloader to at least to version 4.18 (via fastboot). THEN you should be able to access recovery. I can't add links, but I can give you a text link once I find just the IMG file instead of the full firmware. Honestly, I never do backups so I don't have the file on hand. However, I may do one backup at least so I can extract my boot img and give it to you.

Install latest nexus 7 bootloader.
This fixes the boot loader bug and now you can enter recovery from the bootloader screen.
Update the bootloader to at least 3.18. Make sure NOT TO DELETE THE BOOTLOADER!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd flash the bootloader, then flash your recovery of choice. Not being able to access recovery is a bootloader issue, not a recovery issue. The fact that you restored/reverted an older full firmware put you on an older bootloader that would not allow users to access recovery.
Try the new(er) bootloader, it should work. My device is a 16gb grouper Nexus 7 running 4.2.2. Before that, it ran 4.1.2 without any issues, so it should work to resolve the problem you're having.

Flashing factory KitKat question.

Hi I have just bought my Nexus 4 and was thinking of flashing the factory release. If anyone could point me in the direction of a Nexus n00b guide I would be grateful.
I have rooted and flashed ROMs on my previous android phones but only using Odin to root and then flashing ROMs from the custom recovery and ext SD card. I assume that the Nexus has a different method of flashing files.

With Nexus devices you use fastboot to flash factory images.
Use the guide link in my signature or this one from Android Central which is really good.
Also download the Minimal ADB/Fastboot and Universal Naked Driver packages. Make sure to connect your Nexus while in USB Debugging and get the driver installed correctly first. If you are using Windows 8 you need to reboot in Advanced startup mode and disable driver signature before installing.

Also there are a lot of toolkits in original dev section to help you but I won't recommend it as I believe you need to first know how to use ADB. Lastly, if you would just search before making a thread like this...it would be great.

I had never flashed my phone before; never even rooted it but flashing 4.4 wasn't that hard once I got the drivers figured out and the SDK manager installed I used these commands:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot flash bootloader bootloader-mako-makoz20i.img
fastboot reboot-bootloader
fastboot flash radio radio-mako-m9615a-cefwmazm-2.0.1700.84.img
fastboot reboot-bootloader

Man simply root your phone and flash a stock kitkat rom.... All of 10 minutes, some people have been having bootloops with images and since your a novice that would be your best bet to getting kit kat. Not that images are bad or the wrong way to go but too me a person like you its easier and better off rooting and flashing stock.
Bootloader and radio not necessary unless you want too

Nexus 10 stuck at Fastboot Mode....I think

I have a Samsung Google Nexus 10 (Wi-Fi) GT-P8110HAAPHE Which was running Android 4.4.3 (I think but it is definitely the latest version) and I simply wished to root it.
I started following a video on Youtube and now I am stuck at what I think is called the Fastboot mode where My options are to scroll through START/RECOVERY MODE/RESTART BOOTLOADER/POWER OFF. I was using the Wugs Nexus Root Toolkit v1.8.3.
No matter which I select it returns me to the screen with the START option. When I select POWER OFF it does indeed power off but when I switch it on again it returns to the fastboot mode START option. I can get into download mode if that helps.
I did create a backup but cannot restore it.
I have done some research and downloaded the Android SDK Suite and fastboot/ADB and drivers etc ready to try and recover but I don't know where to start.

This is why I tell people not to use toolkits. Since everything is automated, it's hard to tell what went wrong and where. When it comes to Nexus devices, toolkits are entirely unnecessary IMO. These Nexus devices are so super simple to flash manually it's ridiculous. /END RANT
Okay. Sorry about that. Now, back to the issue at hand. The menu you are describing is, in fact, the Bootloader (aka Fastboot mode). Prior to using the NRT, were you completely stock? Was your bootloader already unlocked? To me, it sounds like you may have wiped your OS. Have you tried flashing the 4.4.3 factory image?

I was completely stock. Whilst using NRT I believe I had just succeeded in unlocking the Bootloader and the video then stated that with 4.4.3 a Factory reset was required which is what I did but I did not realise that deleted the O2. I thought that was on a protected partition like my S3 phone.
I can't flash the factory image as I can't get into recovery or is there another way of doing it?
I suppose where tablets are concerned I'm a book but if you could point me to any instructions on how to flash manually I'm hoping I can recover my tablet. Thanks.

Dont know how you got your os erased. But im using a custom recovery since I got mine so maybe the stock recovery erses the os when doing a factory reset. A factory image cant be flashed via recovery and must be flashed via fastboot. Its really easy. But it will wipe the entire device. If you dont want to wipe everything you need to edit it..

I don't mind wiping the device but I cannot access Recovery Mode. When I select RECOVERY MODE and press the Power button to take me there it just returns me to the START screen.
I don't know if the fiollowing is relevent but it displays the word START vertically in the top left of the screen and next to it

Is there ANY way I can flash anything onto my Nexus 10 without using RECOVERY MODE like using Odin or Heimdall with a Samsung phone?

Thanks to Androidbeat.com I now have a fully operational Nexus 10.
Just in case anyone else was following this I did it by downloading all the necessary files into on folder on my Windows Desktop, opening a Command Prompt from there and followed the instructions.
Thank you to those who offered advice here and although my Nexus 10 is showing itself to be unlocked I think I'll give a miss to rooting it and just suffer the limitations rather than risk bricking it again.

Glad everything worked out for you. Just an FYI for future reference, the stock recovery factory reset does not wipe the OS (at least it shouldn't). By default, AFAIK there are no custom recoveries that will wipe your OS either while doing a factory reset. It must've been something with the toolkit.
Regarding root, it's super easy to get root on this device. All you have to do is download the custom recovery image file of your choice. I prefer Philz, but you can use CWM or TWRP as well. Then, download the latest SuperSU zip file (I believe it's v1.99r4 now). Simply fastboot flash the recovery image, boot into recovery, and install the SuperSU zip, and you're good to go. The whole process takes two minutes, and no toolkit required.

Updating TWRP via TWRP n recovery

I had TWRP 3.0.1 so I downloaded the latest TWRP 3.0.2 IMG file and booted to Recovery and selected the image and then selected Recovery as to where to flash and it flashed no errors so I backed out and went to reboot and selected Recovery and it rebooted to bootloader and when I stroll volume keys to Recovery then power to select it just hangs there I have to do a power long press to get it to reboot back to Android. Any ideas why Recovery will not load now ?

A bad flash, perhaps? Have you checked the MD5 after downloading?

Possible bad download but at this point I can't reflash the recovery until I can fast boot .. I gotta order another Type C to USB to connect the phone to the computer for fast boot grrrrr...

Glad to help! Next time make sure you check MD5 before flashing (even then an occasional bad flash could still cause trouble, but hey, what's the choice here?) You can still boot to Android normally, no?
Sidenote: anyone knows if a micro B to C adaptor would work with fastboot?

Yeah I can still boot to Android fine jus when I select recovery n bootloader it hangs in bootloader. I have to hard reset to get out of bootloader mode lol....
Jus sucks BC now I gotta wait until friday to order a Type C to USB cable to use the computer to fast boot TWRP to recovery.. :/
I jus got this 6P 4 days ago coming from the HTC M9 Developer Edition I decided to go with the 6P over the M10 even though I would have gotten $100 off the M10 for not using my UhOh protection.
But I'm currently Stock w/ root until I figure out or understand this whole Vender thing when flashing Roms.. Jus being very cautious.
With HTC you jus flash the ROM you want but here some say jus flash the ROM and some say flash the Vender matching the ROM.. Lol,..

About the vendor img... Not too sure about the whole technical details behind them, but I just flash them every time Google updates them (think monthly security updates), at the very least to get rid of the 'vendor img outdated' popup. You don't need to flash a new vendor img everytime you update/switch ROMs, but only when there's a new vendor.

I usually just flash recovery with flashify. Never had an issue doing it that way. Or fastboot.

People have been facing the same issue all around. Even I did, last night after updating to N Preview. Anyhow, the only solution I know right now is to have a decrypted filesystem (disable encryption), for TWRP to boot and work properly.

Yeah disable encryption I believe I read requires booting into recovery and wiping User Data or something alone those line's.
Unless there's a option in Android settings to disable it idk yet as I jus had the phone a few day's.
But so far I happy with my decision to get the 6P over the M10 even if the 6P is 4 or 5 moths old...

OK I got the latest TWRP Recovery flash . I used Flashify app and it flashed the recovery and I got a working recovery now..
