Backtrack 5 Running on a Kindle Fire

Hey guys just wanted to show you a new build im working on. Its basically a full touch version of bt5. I want to give credit to zacthespack for actually coming up with the ubuntu/BT5 install method.
What sets my build apart is the fact that It is full touch control. No dragging a mouse or anything like that. The only setback currently is the lack of bluetooth to connect a keyboard.
This isnt really a release or anything just wanted to tell everyone what I am working on. If anyone wants to help, feel free to pm me

Get reaver running with BT5 and crack WPS with it and it will be useful

No links or anything yet. The .img file is publicly released and you can find it on google.
The crappy part is that there isn't an external keyboard for the kindle yet :/ One I can A) figure out how to do it if I can find a pinout guide for the Kindle Fire's serial port, or B) Amazon comes out with one, I think the possibilities are endless with this device. Much easier to carry around then my laptop at work. I do pentesting on the side and I think tablets are the future of info sec professionals.
The what I really want to get working is the full touch interface. I have it at 50% right now. I am thinking that there is a problem with detecting multiple gestures in bt5 itself. I am not sure yet haha.
So if anyone would like a fiddle with the source and come up with some ideas please let me know

How's this going? I'm hoping somebody will be able to enable usb host mode on the KF, I am 99% sure bluetooth is not supported by the WL1270B. Speaking of the which, have you gotten it into monitor mode? Injection would require a patch too I'm sure.

I just read through the ubuntu install guide thread, this method involves vnc'ing into a chrooted .img so to answer my own question, none of the wireless penetration utils are going to work.

VNC and chrooting can still allow for wireless stuff to work, as we have access to the native device's from chroot also.
the only hurdle comes in the form of device drivers for wifi not supporting packet capture and monitor mode.
@nickmc01, once i get my KF i cna also lend you a helping hand.
in the mean time you can discuss about the issues you are facing and i may be able to help you on that.
BTW are you playing with variations in VNC client configurations to get touch screen or you are also looking at customizing the window managers to more touch friendly once like unity or kde netbook etc.
Note : I am waiting to get my kindle fire delivered (might be with me by month end)

It wouldn't work. Yes, you could boot into Backtrack5 but the kindle fire's WiFi module does not support the modes needed to run Backtrack5. Only one windows phone actually has the proper hard wars to make any effective use of the program.

[ROOT] Instructions for Airplay Screen Mirroring / Display Extension on the FireTV

Long time reader, first time posting.
Install requires root.
Squirrel LLC just released an android version of their app Reflector ($7). This app can be installed fairly simply on the FireTV, turning it into an airplay receiver for screen sharing and display extension, not just video or audio playing.
This requires root (instructions here) and the google play store (instructions here- they are for kindle, but work) before you can install this program.
Once you have the play store installed and you are signed in, you will be able to install apps remotely. This is much easier, as the play store is somewhat difficult to navigate on the Fire TV itself. However, Google will think the Fire TV is not compatible with Reflector.
To circumvent compatibility restrictions, download Market Helper and install on your FireTV (sideload instructions here). This will allow you to spoof your device type and install the app. I used the Nexus 7 as the device type. Make sure you've run google play services and signed into the play store before you run this, so it can read your id. The activate buttons are invisible until you are selecting them, so just press down and over until you find what you want.
After setting up your Fire TV to look like a Nexus 7, head back to the play store and set Reflector to install remotely.
From here, you can use any airplay device to broadcast to the Fire TV!

I wasn't able to get this to work in Extend Desktop mode with my Mac. Since there's only a 15 minute refund period, I already got the refund, so it's possible I was doing something wrong, but the Play description didn't mention Extend Desktop mode. I don't see how I was doing anything wrong though, since the only settings in the app is the Name and the Password (and I didn't set a password). I did remember to turn off AirPlay in my other AirPlay app before trying Reflector.
Prior to this, I was already using AirReceiver to handle IOS mirroring. If all you want is IOS mirroring, I believe it was less expensive. Since it was bought through the Amazon store, it shows up with an icon on main screen (in my Apps and Recent sections). I don't recall if you can buy it on the FireTV or not, but I think so. A Voice search for Air Receiver brings it up.

We've actually submitted Reflector to the Amazon Fire TV store. The approval process is a bit more lengthy and involved than normal Google Play submissions.
As for extended desktop from a computer. It should work alright. I'de be interested in seeing logs from this to see why it didn't work for you. You can email our support team and they'll be happy to get it working!

Reflector is a paid app, and I have no experience sideloading paid apps / getting a signed apk out of one. I found it to be easier to root and install the play store than to bother with that. If you are aware of an easy method to get the APK out of a paid app, I'd love to hear it- I always pay for my apps, but sometimes I need to install them in a dev environment where the play store isn't available, and I'd like to know.
If you're concerned about rooting, I'd consider the advantages. Rooting is a piece of cake now thanks to Towelroot, and it gives you uped duper more functionality than you have without it, especially if you are using this device to run XBMC primarily.

Thanks for the good customer support. I figured it was the Amazon store's lengthy submission process that was holding things up and not an actual compatibility issue, which is why I decided to hack this together.
I own no other Amazon devices (and probably won't), so it's to my advantage to keep all my purchases within one ecosystem. You may consider adding a little walkthrough on how to use the google play store to run your app on the firetv to your page, if you guys aren't fearful of the wrath of Bezos. I'm sure there are a lot of people like me who bought the firetv for the android, not the amazon.

I'm not sure what happened there for you. Extended display was the default for me. That being said, the other app could have interfered, or maybe your settings in OSX weren't correct. I wish I could help you more, but Airplay is finicky enough as it is, without adding third party software. Maybe get in touch with Sid about that.
If anyone else is interested in this, my brother managed to get airsquirrel to work with reflector on the firetv, but it seemed to be more laggy than with true airplay. I'm not sure if that was the fault of his laptop or the software, so that might be worth looking into if you're a diehard windows user like I used to be.

I have an android phone that I download the google play app to and then use Es file explorer to back up the app. Then sideload it to the firetv.

Gamefly streaming on shield?

I'm curious if anyone has gotten gamefly streaming to work on the shield box. Tried to sideload one method but it says it's incompatible with the device. I'm going to attempt it when I get some time, but wondering if anyone else can confirm that it's possible and working or not.

I'll take the plunge, and say no way in hell. nVIDIA in their finite wisdom have blessed the Shield with its own Streaming Service called GeForce NOW. I'm less sure exactly who, or what GameFly are. But, if a second Streaming Service were ever added behind GFN. I would hope it was Steam.
That doesn't mean all is Lost however, you could still get yourself a GTX650 (Or better!*), and stream the PC client side to the Shield using Game Stream.
Or barring the rest of it ask GameFly to add support for AndroidTV, as a hole.
*AMD/ATI Does NOT count as better

Thanks for the response, but that doesn't answer my question. I have GFN and already can stream most of my library from the PC and steam. GFN has a somewhat limited library available with it's subscription compared to Gamefly's, which is available on a simple firestick, fire TV box, smart TV, or emtec box. Obviously if it works on a firestick then just about any crapbox will do.
I get it. Nvidia shield is superior, that's why I got it. I would rather install an app on the shield to try out other available technologies that isn't proprietary to just nvidia instead of buying another box just to try it. Hence my question if anyone has successfully installed the app on the shield.

Well then I take it that it's NOT in the AndroidTV NMPlayStore then. To wit my personal advice would be to sideload it. But outta personal interest is it in the Amazon App Store? If that were the case I might try sideloading the Amazon Underground App first then if you can install it there.
If not, then I would use something like ES File Explorer to copy the *.apk to a MicroSD, or USB Stick and then install it threw ES File Explorer again, on the Shield TV. Which should be simple enough, even if it was a PitA.

I was able to download it from mirror play store, and side load it. It runs, but with no navigation from the NV TV remote or game remote. But I could use a mouse and keyboard with it. I didn't get a subscription yet to see if it will work, and it probably will with keyboard and mouse, but my assumption is if the app doesn't recognize the NV game controller to navigate, then it won't work for games as well. Didn't try a PS4 or other Bluetooth controller with it yet. If you've tried this, at all. Let me know.

Possible to enable/add casting to Miracast?

I was just curious if this is something that could be added via root or mods.
Seems like even low end devices are able to cast to Miracast so the missing feature from the Fire tablets seems like a push to get people to buy the Fire TV sticks or whatever.
Would be nice to cast to my projector which has Miracast built in when I am feeling lazy and don't want to power on the PC for proper viewing.
What say you guys?

I think @DragonFire1024 is working on it too. :laugh:

Here's the deal. I've studied this pretty closely and have a good grasp on how to make this work, at least until it comes to one configuration: wifi_display. It may not seem like much, but it means everything in terms of whether the original miracast works, or doesn't. There are 2 important settings that need to be enabled; config_enableWifiDisplay in framework-res needs to be set to true; FireTabletSettings.apk needs to have wifi_display in set in res/values/public and I have yet to come across a settings APK with that value present.
Solutions: 1) push Java code to the public class of the apk (I don't know enough about Java to do so). The code can be found on the Android Open Source Project website, if you know how to navigate it. 2) direct edit of the smali code of the apk. I have studied a bit of how to do this but still don't grasp the ability. Every decompiler is different and one never says the same from the other. (Yes smali is that difficult).
The best chance is through smali, it's the easiest method imho. Until that can be achieved, the original miracast is lost. I've tried other work arounds including the famous kensuke research on GitHub, and have come up with a brick each time. So you are left with no options really, because we can't use Chromecast on these devices because we're considered uncertified, even when rooted. I'll continue my work on it, but until I can figure it out, you can bring up the UI and watch compatible devices come into and out of range, but I have yet to get any to connect. WiFi P2P works perfectly in terms of connection, but I haven't used it for anything else and still won't connect via cast screen aka miracast.

Also just a heads up. The HD 8 appears to fully support Miracast, at least in the 2016 device. The build.prop is set up 100% right, MTK actually supports WFD in this device according to the actual ProjectConfig.mk, including both sink and source. I believe the only thing preventing it from working is rooting the device to perform the modification to the framework. If I am not mistaken, that would enable wifi_display in the public.xml because the sink and source are already supported pieces of hardware directly through MTK. Whereas in the HD 10, none of it is supported by MTK. In other words Amazon didn't include support in the build they ordered from MTK for the HD 10. So this requires more jerry rigging unfortunately. If root is ever gotten for the HD 8, it may make this a lot easier.

I am on an hd 10 2017 os version 5610 (retyre xposed and rooted version). I know this is a thread started about miracast but I saw this comment:

I am able to cast to both my chromecast's (one gen one and one gen 2) older non hd ones, without an issue. So far have cast from the discovery go app, science go app, history app, plex and netflix... all downloaded from google playstore (maybe i got netflix from amazon). For some reason HBO Go doesn't show a cast icon so couldn't test that but at least for me chromecast functionality is definitely there and working 100%
Would be happy to test any other apps people might be interested in but sounds like others had no functionality at all not that we had an app compatibility issue.

Chromecast might be a fluke. I've not been able to get it to work, but I'm not so much interested in it. The equivalent of the original miracast, remodroid worked on all my tablets, but haven't tried it on my HD 10.

You are correct, I downloaded remodroid onto my hd 10 and it didn't find any devices. My roku in screen mirroring mode (auto allow) I am told should be seen as a miracast device, but the program didn't find any devices, even when I tried to connect directly to the ip address.

There are a few factors on the HD 10 which ultimately prevent screen mirroring from working. At least what we know as Miracast. I'm going to have to do some more research on how to edit smali code that would allow for the wi-fi display to be active. But Amazon doesn't include it in the public class of their Java code so I have to do it manually and I'm not sure how to do so.

Can the 2020 edition of the Fire run the Sonos Controller?

As I understand it the 2020 edition of the Fire HD 8 (that is, the one being sold for $55 now on Amazon) can't be rooted or run custom firmware yet; the best you can do is install the Google Play store, however, even then some apps that need special permissions won't work.
So my question is, does anyone know if the Sonos Controller app run using this config? I'd like to replace my 5th generation Fire but one of my main uses for it is that of a Sonos controller. I know that the Sonos app installs itself as a service, so I am wondering if it will have issues.

To grant the special permission for some apps. You can do over ADB:
Code:
adb shell pm grant <package-name> <permission>
Example

Like the original post, I've got an older Fire 10 tablet. It works, but shortly after installing the Google Store, and installing the Sonos app to control my 4 wireless speakers around my condo... I started getting an error about my OS not being supported. The app continues to control my speakers, but I've been waiting for it to fail at some point.
A buddy got an inexpensive Android tablet he was thinking of using in his car. After realizing certain limitations, he went another direction and offered to let me tinker with it. I tried installing the Sonos app, but got the same error. And I suspect because I didn't get it "working" before the error started... I couldn't even get it to "see" my speakers like the original Fire 10 I have, let alone control them.
So I'd like to buy a new tablet that I can install the Sonos app on, and control my wireless speakers. Anyone here happen to have done this on the new tablets... and know whether you still get the OS error, or maybe the newest Fire devices run a newer OS and it works? Any replies are appreciated. Thanks all!
