Galaxy S8/S8+ No Root? No problem. [Mods+Apps+Files+Etc] - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

US variant of Samsung Galaxy S8/S8+ as we all know, unfortunately has a locked bootloader. Nonetheless, we all strive in bringing limitless of possibilities in customizing our gadgets in any way.
»»»»I opened this thread to call everyone at the table to bring««« whatever Mods, Apps, Custom themes or even Files that could possibly be able to work in these phones. Now, some of you know Substratum is now available for Samsung S8/S8+ Touchwiz which by the way it opened a huge door for customization and what-not. Huge thanks to @nicholaschum for such an accomplishment on this.
**If you guys have anything to help others in bringing the best of these phones, bring them on, post what you have, what you have done or what's the best. I'm pretty sure there are others looking for ways to customize these beauties.
So guys, let's start the customization ** ??

Well that didn't work. Lol. So far I am not missing root though. Which is great because I hate rooting my phone. I only do it because I need something. But I got everything I want and need. Even things people can't get with root on Android 7. Like recording the screen with internal audio. I have a theme engine. Don't miss audio mods because music sounds great(better than on my last phone with any audio mods).

Hey mate, I kinda miss root but seems like there other ways to customize the s8. I've got a few minor Mods but I wish I had root so I can do far much better Mods and tweaks. As far as sound, I honestly hate how low speakers put out sound even @ max Volume. Hopefully one day we'll get viper4android without root. Cheers mate and keep modding and if you have apps that could help change things a bit, post them. ??

Oh yeah the speakers are garbage. With headphones it's not bad though.

[Q] Galaxy S4 Tweaks

Okay, so here's my question. The whole reason I went over to iPhone is because of all the tweaks. With a jailbroken iPhone you can download a tweak for Pandora for unlimited skips... and no ads... With a jailbroken iPhone you can download a tweak to push one button and kill all running programs.... Witha jailbroken iPhone you can download tweaks for Snapchat....Candy crush and TONS others!!! Its all right there for you in Cydia. So my question is..... If I get the Galaxy S4.... and I root it.... are there tweaks available for it like this?? And if so... where do I get them?
This is the mighty question!!!!!
Thanks
( I swear if I come back to android I'll start creating boot animations again )

I don't think using Apple terminology in an Android forum a lot of people will help you... if you are thinking in change from ios to Android, you should change your mind chip. 95% of you-called Apple tweaks by jailbreaking you can do them in Android even without root, and if you root it, you will be able to do 200% amount of thing you would do in jailbroken ios.
Just ask us what you want to do in the appropriated sub forum and we will probably help you.

If you cant get past the reality that Apple and iPhone users have some useful tech out there as well.... well I'm just sorry. I understand the whole battle between Android and Apple well..... however, I've gotten to play on both side now for a while. With Apple... once you are jailbroken.... its very user friendly! Everything is right there in front of you.... put together in a little store called Cydia. They have little categories all set up for you... telling you what different tweaks will do..... you can download and install them with ease.... just like any other app. ( Now let me point out that I'm not defending Apple... so saying I like them better than Android, I'm simply telling you how they have their system set up!) So now I'll ask again, does android have something similar set up for their users? I like the Galaxy S4 and want to come back over.... but I want to know that I can set up my phone with all the same kinds of MODS!!! Is it possible or not?
I'm not aware of any such store. I guess what we're asking is what do you mean by "mods"? For example, what kind of an additional functionality do you gain by downloading a mod to an app on an iPhone?

I'm glad you asked!!! OK, on an Jailbroken iPhone you can download and install a tweak for Pandora that will allow you to have unlimited skips! Also get rid of those annoying ads. Ok, there's another tweak you can download that allows you to push one button... and download any song you're listening to on Pandora right to your phone...FOR FREE! This is just two small examples of tweaks or Mods or whatever you want to call them for the Pandora app. Now on an iPhone.... there are literately hundreds if not thousands of different tweaks... make by all different developers out there, for all different types of apps! So I want to know.... are there people/developers that are creating the same kinds of Mods or tweaks for rooted Android phones? I've forgotten why its so great to root your phone in the first place! So after rooting you can change the OS.....Great...... big deal..... what else can be done? Do you get what I'm saying now???

I will insist on my argument... you should change your mind, they ar different systems, mainly Android is an completely open OS, rooted or not, while iOS is completely closed except jailbreaking, but even with jailbreak you will not able to do all things or "tweaks" as you call these things, as you can do in Android.
As V3ct0rIL said, our answer depends of what you exactly want... your desired tweaks in Android you can get by different ways in Android, depending of the intrussion grade of the "tweak". Some of them you can get in a unrooted device, most in google play, like custom launchers, you don't need to be root to use them, and they will change the interface completely, you can also "convert" your android interface in a iOS interface with some launcher apps in google play, and looking some of your tweaks in the web, using custom launcher you have Barrel, for example. You can also program icons or widgets on the desktop to do what you want using some no-root apps. You don't need airblue tweak in Android, it is a stock functionality, for iGotYa you have Cerberus App, etcetera... if you are root you will be the boss, you will be able to use root apps which will do everything you need like block ads, you can change (root or not) the kernel so that you can overclock the device, or change some tweaks or parameters in android (word "tweaks" is used in Android only for this), like unvolting, overclocking, negative image, led notifications prior S3, fast USB charging, etc... custom ROMS with your favorite "tweaks", etc...
As you can see, possibilities are infinite, so just ask or write what you want to do and we will give you how and where to find what you want...

From everything you just told me, all I heard was... By rooting the phone you can modify the phone os system. over clocking, changing the kernel, ect.... you also mentioned that a lot of things mod apps can be found in the playstore. but I really dont think youre getting what I'm asking.... and I blame it on the fact that you've never really got to experience a jailbroken iPhone... so you dont get what I'm talking about.
Are there apps, tweaks, mods, (whatever you want to call them!!!!!) in the Android world.... that make apps do things there not suppose to? Or make them better? Are they available in the play store.... is there a site you can download and then install them. I really just dont think there is! Or everyone here would have answered the question already! Jailbroken iPhones are just better! Yes its amazingly cool the Android is an open OS..... but theres a reason! No ones writing any cool **** for them..... if I'm wrong.... point me in the direction of some cool **** !!!! Prove me wrong !!

There's an awesome tweak on Android that allows you to have unlimited skips and no ads on Pandora radio.
It's called not being a tight arse and buying the app from the Play Store.
It's a really great app and the developers deserve the small amount they're asking for month.
If you use the app and enjoy it, pay for it!

I repeat, change your mind, one mind while you are using ios, one while you are using android... If your question is if there is a only app, store, or something like that as Cydia where you can find ALL mods, tweaks, launchers, etc, together, the answer is NO, you wont. If your question is if there are mods, tweaks, launchers, custom kernels and ROM in Android to personalize the device to your person, YES, there are, a lot. If your question is Where can you find them, the answer is IN SEVERAL PLACES depending the aggressive grade, the functionality, etc. Some of then, most, you will find in Google Play (there are several ways to find something), some of them in cookers blogs, and a lot of them in forums like this.
Consider that an open system as Android permit a lot of people around the world work together to get all these things (xda projects, Cyanogenmod, etc are some examples) and a level of personalization and freedom much greater than iOS. You could learn to cook a custom ROM with a custom launcher with all the fantasies you want, for example...
Apart of this, if you are thinking jailbroken iphones are better and you get a higher freedom than Android phones, really man, you are not only in the wrong place, but you are just wrong considering going back to Android from iOS or considering buying a Samsung...

Have fun with that..... Although the phone itself is very cool. I'll stick with the jailbroken goodness....
But just ask yourself this one question.... If there's so many millions of people out there that love iPhone and jailbreaking.... don't you think there has to be something good about it?
I was like you at one point.... a non believer..... I went on and on to my friends with iPhones about how they were missing out.... and how much better Android was.... Until one day I was just tired of changing OS's and trying other peoples stuff... I switched to the iPhone 4s when it first came out.... I studied online how to jailbreak it.... and when I did.... I couldn't believe all the things I could do with it.... It was amazing! No one has told me anything....and I mean ANYTHING that says I should come back. some one prove me wrong !!!!

I'm done with this debate.....jailbreaking is just better...... I've played on both sides...... they won... simple as that!
There are cracked versions of software on Android just like all OS'. But this is not the place to ask where you get such applications. Most applications on the market have free versions with mildly annoying adverts etc but offer the full app, ad free for very reasonable prices. If you like the app and use it often then buy it.
On the customization point a rooted android is just a linux computer the possibilities are endless, there is also many choices when it comes to roms and software tweaks (depending on handset), you can even put thing on your home screen.
OP is just looking for an argument, some mod should close this thread because it's useless.

So this was a debate after all? I dont see the point of posting it, and saying "nah, i think jailbreaking is better".
Omega ROM for s4 has a "tweak hub" or whatever. It sounds like cindya. But that's just a small part of rooting. Ease of access to tweaks and mods is as simple as looking for what you want and applying it with android. If you aren't interested in learning beyond the "user friendly way" Android can accommodate you, but it will never be iOS.
Guys and gals, I just think that us and OP have a different mindset. Sounds to me like OP is a regular user, who, among other things, doesn't necessarily like to pay devs for their work, while we look at things from a technical standpoint. Just a different look on things. I bet what OP wants is the infamous Black Market, or whatever it's called.
Granted, I will argue that Android community is actually better off without such people (sorry, OP, no offense intended), as I would rather have a community of people who appreciate devs' work.

This is the absolute most awkward and retarded thread over the entire forum!

Seems after getting the Note 4 I have found my self wondering how I was ever with out root. Its crazy I cant stand this phone with out root. Its maddening to know I have Ads and apps I don't need. If Verizon didn't offer this phone at Christmas for 150.00 I would have never got it. #1 Reason no root was out yet but I took a chance. I know now or always have that you DEVS work hard to get stuff done. This was just a big ....
THANK YOU FOR YOUR HARD WORK!
Root will be out soon. I had no patience and switched to the Dev edition. I HATE ads and clustered samsung status bar with passion...

Articulated very nicely. I too long for Root and full control of my phone restored in my hands.
Op is the one who has joined XDA since 2011 and more than 400+ thanks (out of 500+ posts ) Posted this in the wrong forum accidentally or didn't know this is development forum
This is exactly why I sold my Verizon n4 and got a nexus 6. I have never had a phone without root. It was driving me nuts as well. I love the phone but couldn't deal with no root. I check back periodically to see if root has been achieved. Maybe one day I will have a n4 again.
Meh... You can disable the bloat with the stock app manager... Yeah, not 100%, but I am not gonna obsess about 4 or 5 tiny apps or services running in the background that I don't see or notice anyway... I am not that much of a control freak... It's a phone, not the center of my universe that I feel compelled to bend 100% to my will.. hehe
Root would be nice I guess, but on these newer phones, the appeal is less and less. I can skin it however I want with dozens of launchers, and debloating a few extra apps with root won't make it any faster...
By the time root comes out, the devs will have moved on to newer phones so the ROM support will suck anyway...
It's unfortunate. I would love to have root access on this phone for various reasons . My next phone will have it, even if I have to leave Verizon.
Sadly, the Verizon Note 4 is never going to see it...at least not before the next round of Note flagships
First post, just got a note 4. Had a rooted lg g2 before it. I'm loving the note so far (only had it about a week), but I use limelight to play computer games on my phone and it doesn't support mouse input very well without root access. . . As has been said I've disabled most of the bloat, but it would be nice to be able to just get rid of it. Also Sixaxis controller requires root to pair a ps3 or 4 controller to my phone... I hope root comes soon, maybe I should become a developer to help the cause. I too thank you for all your work.

You can disable any app you want using adb shell.
This issue around root has been interesting for me. For awhile, I was like you, OP and many others who feel they must have root. However, after about 5 weeks of use now, I find myself perfectly happy with the Note 4 just the way it is and I wonder if I'll even take root-ability into consideration when making my next phone purchase.

I am with you. Root used to be mandatory IMHO, as phone makers just didn't seem to be able to get the phone's to work properly out of the box... slow, clunky, missing things, instability, outdated software, etc...
Nowadays, I just don't see that. Typically it is the ROMs that are unstable, miss features, etc... I see thread after thread of this great new ROM! But the camera is flunky, doesn't have data, or the IR blaster doesn't work, etc...
I had an LG G2 and the ROMs didn't impress me much. Went to a GS5 and was even less impressed. None of the ones that I tried were measurably faster than stock, none were 100% functional, or if they were, they were just tweaked stock ROMs and so what's the point? Risk warranty issues or bricking it, or not able to get OTA's, for what? Just to be able to brag to my nerd friends that I had a transparent status bar because a regular one bothers me SOOOO SOOOO much? LOL
The Note 4, is amazing. Debloat it with ADB or with the app manager, install your favorite launcher and icon pack to get the look and feel that you want, and know that it will work 100%, it's fast, stable and no warranty issues, no being left out when Lollipop drops and you want it but it breaks root again so you have to stick with the old software, etc...
I'm with you guys. I come from a Nexus4 and still have a Nexus7. I miss root for Titanium backup and that's about it. Sure I'm going to once it drops but the note is a very capable device able to stand on its own.

4 or 5 apps? You must be oblivious to the hundreds of services and dozens of apps that are running on your phone. Don't forget about hundreds of intents that must all be doing something in your favor.

You can disable most of the things in the app manager. There are only a few that you can't, but then you can do that with ADB. Either way, you can debloat the phone, without root, and without risk of messing up your warranty or the ability to get the Lollipop OTA in a few weeks.
Also, a lot of reviews have shown that disabling everything under the sun to free up RAM, can actually slow your phone down, not speed it up.
Getting the true crap disabled, is the biggest thing and anyone can do that without root today.
It doesn't have to be the center of someone's Universe for them to enjoy changing it and making it their own, people do this will all types of things. Some would call it a "hobby" or an interest. Lots of people enjoy spending hours on Facebook or playing video games, others enjoy tinkering with their devices.
I went for a while with a retail Note 4 and ended up getting a DE. There are too many things that I missed, here are some of them:
Add WiFi HotSpot Toggle and Bypass Subscription Check
Add Flashlight Toggle
AdAway
Titanium Backup
Viper4Android
Root Explorer
Xposed Framework with the following modules:
-Youtube AdAway
-Play Store Link In App Info
-Wanam
-Swype Keyboard Tweaks
-Notify Clean (Clean notification area)
-No Map Tips (Disable Google Play Maps location accuracy tips)
-Google Play Music Listen Later (Change the default Google Play Music pane and tabs)
-Disable Clear Defaults Dialog
Chrome Pie (Add Pie control to Chrome)

Yeah, not 100%, but I am not gonna obsess about 4 or 5 tiny apps or services running in the background that I don't see or notice anyway... I am not that much of a control freak... It's a phone, not the center of my universe that I feel compelled to bend 100% to my will.. hehe
Root would be nice I guess, but on these newer phones, the appeal is less and less. I can skin it however I want with dozens of launchers, and debloating a few extra apps with root won't make it any faster...
By the time root comes out, the devs will have moved on to newer phones so the ROM support will suck anyway...

And whats even better you can block every single possible app with adb !
Until we get root its live able without it.

The Note 4 is so sick the way it is! Do I wish we had root? Check. Do I wish we had unlocked bootloader? Check. Am I gonna give up on THE best phone out right now because I don't have those things? Hell NO! The phone is a beast! And I'll keep waiting, maybe for nothing....... but if it is for nothing, I'll live. Love the Note 4! And sticking with it no matter what.

Sprint V20 bootloader status?

The title pretty much says it all. I'm on Sprint and I like this phone but I'm not going to get it if the bootloader is locked and/or it can't be rooted. Having ad blocking and Xposed on my phone are basic requirements for me to get one.
Would any kind soul please let me know?
I don't know, but if not anything with the bootloader would love a way to at least get a systemless root, does this sound like something that could even be possible?
It is locked as of now. Root may or may not come.
Get yourself Adguard and live happy. What do you want Xposed for?
I like root just to debloat.
I also like Titanium Backup as well
Yes. Adblocking and titbackup. Xposed would be nice though this phone needs less xposed modules for sure. I think. Lg got a lot of things right ootb.

Is this a serious question? Have you used xposed be before? The YouTube ad blocking alone is worth it. Not to mention being able to tweak literally everything on the phone and basically have a custom ROM like experience without having to flash a new ROM over the stock one. Lets say i want to change the height of my navbar and make it pink instead of black. I can do all that with xposed. If you're asking why xposed is desirable you may as well be asking why customization is needed.

Everyone has their own preferences and ways they live their life. I made this thread to inquire about a specific property of the software (thanks for your input on that), but not any advice on whether or not I should use it. Your advice is unsolicited and unwanted. Thanks.

I've never had stability issues with any xposed modules. My previous device was the LG G4 and I used xposed to tweak the crap out of it and it was awesome. There is a reason why xposed is so popular go look at the xposed threads. Just cause you don't feel its necessary doesn't mean it has no value to other users. This is XDA developer's for godsakes i dont think encouraging people to be content with a stock device should even be allowed on this site. But thats my humble opinion.

Is ROOT G935T worth it? Advice needed

The question is simple enough... Is it worth ROOTING the T-mobile G935T Galaxy S7 Edge ?
I'm late to the game with the S7E - Quite literally just bought one... And this will be my first device with a locked bootloader. My Note 4 was fully rooted with tons of support and development.
I see there is not much (hardly any) rom development for the S7E G935T, and I see several threads mentioning root and guides, but then I see it bootloops several days later, or people going back stock and just not messing with it. So the question I ask is this: Is it worth rooting the S7E ? or is the root not worth the effort... Also since I'm used to a root with my Note 4 - will the Root for the G935T be the same? or a limited root?
Sorry if this is confusing, just wanted a more current answer since I'm sure there have been lots of changed from March-July 2016 where most of those other threads started.
No, it's not worth it in my opinion. I could never get rid of the heat and the lag. However, goodlock provides most of the the UI customizations I prefer, and the Samsung theme engine compliments that, along with Nova launcher. Adhell blocks ads, the Ufirmware gets rid of the annoying T-Mobile bootscreen and bloat, and you get to keep Samsung pay. I pay for google play music, so YouTube red takes care of YouTube ads. Honestly, this phone has enough going for it that (I can't believe I'm saying this!) root is not needed. In fact, as a long time rooter myself, aside from flashing a new custom ROM every week, the isn't any functionality that I miss that I can think of. If I didn't pay for YouTube red, youtube ads might annoy me I suppose
Thanks @dave812 I appreciate you taking the time to write that.
I have a couple questions, if you (or any one) has the time to answer...
I have Nova launcher prime. I've installed a couple Samsung themes but I can not see the themed icons in Nova? Only TouchWiz.
I'll for sure try ad hell, I tried ad clean and the battery usage was insane. Nearly 30% during a days use... That's too high.
Good lock I've never heard of. I'll check that out.
Any other advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

I have mine rooted running Echoes Rom 1.5 with Xposed using a custom Aod screen. It's not really worth root because of less than stellar battery life but I love to root so I did it anyway.
I was a long time Rooter as well and built themes for the Note 4. Samsung Themes are pretty good @Araltd but with Nova the Icon Packs will not carry over. The only launcher I have found to do this is Action Launcher, but it doesn't have the features of Nova IMO.
@PapaMag yeah I remember the themes! I ran a few of them on my note 4.
I'm shocked no one has come up with a way to get the Samsung theme icons to carry over to Nova? But since I have no clue, I'm assuming it's not easy to do.
When you say you were a long time rooter does that mean you do not root anymore?
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S7E
My opinion... no. Root isn't worth it. Not until an unlocked bootloader becomes available (IF).
No custom roms (well... slimmest that I've ever seen anyway.)
No Samsung Pay
Poor battery life
Lag (even after "fixes")
No OTA.
No Nouget (more than likely)
I believe at this point it might be easier to ask, "What's the benefit of having root?"

I had never heard of Adhell before this post. I've been using Adguard but I *hate* having the VPN icon in the notification bar, plus it messes up battery stats. You're basically my favorite person right now, Adhell has totally made my day!

At this point, viper. I don't think superior audio quality is worth all those other drawbacks.
I'm in the same boat. Got an S7E on day one, rooted that one (but overheated and lagged like hell). Went through the whole Note 7 debacle and am now back with a S7E. The only thing I'm really hoping for is the Nougat update soon. It carries over a lot of the N7 features and UI. Would anyone suggest going with the Verizon Nougat Beta, or just suck it up and wait?
Well honestly I've found ez package disabler to disable most of the bloat. Gets themes too ??
I've got Adhell running and disconnect pro which are both administrative level ad blockers... I'm used to ad away, which is amazing... These other two in conjunction block about 90% I guess. I'm running TouchWiz with the theme's right now (I also own Nova prime) but Nova won't use the TouchWiz system icons so I'm playing around right now.
I've got super swiftkey with all its themed keyboards. I have not used samsung/Android pay yet, but since it's stock APK1, it (they) should work.
I do notice some heating up from time to time.. The only app I've got that lags badly right now is my security camera app (q-see view) which makes the phone crawl so bad, I can not always exit the app properly. Sometimes I have to press recent apps and close all to make it end... Didn't have that problem before on the note 4.
I looked at good lock, it seems like a fancy lock screen replacement. I personally don't see a need for that. Unless I didn't find the right app? It didn't seem to offer any UI tweaks, just lock screen functions...?
All I can say is, nougat can't get here fast enough for me.
Thanks for all the help and advice! Please keep it coming. If more of us post results with apps and tweaks, rooting won't be missed as much. Thanks again to everyone for participating here!

I'm about to unroot today, it's been horrible ( the lag that is) even with the fixes it's like your'e using half a phone constant freezing lag
I rooted yesterday - and yes my phone was very hot. And it lagged, but I followed all the instructions in this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-s7-edge/how-to/guide-post-root-common-bugs-fixes-t3427600
My phone is now running fine. It is not hot and it does not lag. I'm really glad I rooted. I was able to install xposed and modules today.

I have been rooted for a couple of months. I have no SU hashtag. Also no heat or lag. I am running U fimrware with T-Mobile modem.
My stance on rooting is no for s7 edge for the following reasons.
1. Samsung Pay ( Soooooooo convienient. My wallet only has my ID, a debit card and credit card thanks to it)
2. S Health ( There are other ones out there but I prefer S health that provides a lot of benefits without ads in my face every 10s)
3. Stock is very stable.
4. Samsung theme store ( enough customization options here )
5. Security in general ( not tripping knox, plus complete stock may get better resale value )
For the bloatware issues, I'm rocking stock ROM for 935u, the unlocked US version. I would suggest going this route if bloatware and performance is an issue for you. It isn't that hard to flash. It doesn't trip knox. You keep all the benefit of a stock phone and a very, very stable phone. There's a thread on XDA which I followed https://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-s7-edge/how-to/stock-official-sm-g935us-g935uueu4apl4-t3535408.

Swift Installer

So I was enjoying this on my NON-ROOTED Note 9 but unfortunately, there's no support for non-rooted 6T's. I was wondering if anyone here knows another way to apply black themes to my apps (especially WhatsApp) through non-rooted methods. I have the Tmo variant and I'm not gonna be able to pay if off for a while so rooting is out of the question.
If there's no solution I guess I'll just live with this. Substratum also doesn't work. Again, that was working on my non-rooted N9. *shrugs*

Ya know...some basic research would answer your question.
Simply put, you're "non-rooted" Note worked because you were on OREO. PIE disabled Substratum themes from working unless they have a signature...what XDA has come to these days...

I guess busy/lazy folks? Sorry for insulting you. This is why Telegram chat groups should be allowed to be advertised here. Rules should be amended and evolved to help this because it could save you from the terrible penalty (on my part) of making you read stuff like this.
I am sorry.

Lol. Non rooted. Its still on oreo thats why. Pie disabled overlays and will only work if ur rooted.
Theres a lot of tmobile users that successfully unlocked their 6t even if its not paid off. Just read other forums.
Next time, research.
yep, the only things I want my unlock.bin file for will be Subs and Viper...miss Subs alot from my note 8, but patience is a virtue..

I did. Setting aside your uselessly snippet attitude. It just seems strange that on one unrooted phone it would work and not the other. At least to me. If this is strange to you that it's seems strange to me then I don't know what to tell ya. Folks on the N9 on Pie are still using this. Unrooted. Which is why I was wondering out loud.
Best.

I expect everyone to stay on topic and respect fellow users. Also as far as installer is concerned root is mandatory on Pie and sub/andromeda wont work on Pie either so the only way to apply overlays is to unlock which you can do so even without being paid. Just check the unlock threads for T-Mobile version.
Thanks,
Funk
There's been too many folks on here telling me otherwise. I guess they are mistaken.
