Check chapter 8: Getting root
Though actually needed steps are
1. Flash 1.zip (It makes SuperSu to install in system-less mode to make it able to boot on our phone)
2. Flash normal SuperSu.zip (newest stable version)
3. Reboot phone
4. Phone bootloops few times and then boots normally
5. You're Done!

Yes and SuperSu you can find here https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/supersu/stable-2016-09-01supersu-v2-78-release-t3452703
And better take back-up before flashing, just in case

Alternatively, you can use Magisk to root your phone (just flash the zip through TWRP and it's done).

Root Method

Beginning - 1. Step First Unlock Your Bootloader, and Flash TWRP recovery! 2. Step Boot in to recovery and Flash SU 2.62v systemless mode,(Search in google for it)
3. Step Wipe Cache, reboot. Update Superuser to lastest start app and Update Su binary, reboot 4. Step Now start app And Make sure You still have root, if not, start from 2 step.
Reboot in recovery and wipe Danvik/Cache!
End! Enjoy System less root glitch, but at some point you will lose it! Don't reboot too much!
Only works on Huawei P8 lite ALE -L21
(P.s if You want you can use my moded SU.zip file, it has SuPro 2.82v but don't worry, it has 2,62v su files)
Best Regards!
I prefer Magisk, because it includes other useful features, such as modules and Magisk Hide

Can you explain why are you using too old zip from 2015 (v2.62) instead of recent like v2.82?
Are you having issues with v2.82?
Your modded zip is Chainfire work, are you playing with "fire"?

Huawei P8 ALE-L21 do not like system mode root, it creates bootloop and i made SuperUser Apk mod for Pro version and changed Root mode detention to think You are Using System Mode root! It took a month to make it work, and now i succeed and shared it here! If You Have other question's, PM me!?

To me takes 1 minutes to root with SuperSu Systemless mode (no issues with bootloops), downloaded from official site, and 30 seconds install SuperSu Pro apk via google play. If I understood well you find a workaround to install SuperSu Pro apk, right?

[Mini Guide] How to root 8.1

The current version of TWRP will not accept your pin/password on 8.1. Until we get an update to TWRP there are a couple of work arounds.
One option is totally wipe your phone and root it before you set up a pin/password/fingerprint.
The other option is to get a thumb drive and a USB to C adapter from Best Buy or elsewhere. Put SU on the thumb drive, boot to TWRP img with fastboot as you normally do and then plug in the thumb drive to the phone. In twrp you will see an option to select storage, select the OTG USB Drive and you can install SU from there.
Edit. As of Jan 1 it looks like SU is no longer working. I have switched to Magisk without issue.
Good to know! Kudos
Which version of TWRP and SU did you use? Is it possible to install custom kernel on 8.1.?Thank you ?

3.1.1.1 TWRP and 2.82 SR5 SU. The latest of both. So far I have not gotten EX to work, it boot loops. Going to try a couple of things after dinner but I expect it will fail.
Actually, you could use the old fastboot boot boot-to-root method used on 8.0 dev. It also works on 8.1 dev. Then you could use Flashfire to flash the latest SuperSU SR5 as the boot-to-root SuperSU version is an old one (SR1). Remember to choose Auto Mount option. Works for me, hope it helps you guys.
I tried flash fire but couldn't seem to get it to work. I just get a black screen. I know it says this is normal and it should come up after half a minute. I gave it a few minutes and never got anything other than the black screen. Did you get this screen? How long did it last?
EDIT- nevermind just did it with TWRP

I'm assuming after it is rooted, you can enable PIN/fingerprint? If so, what happens when the next dev build comes out, you will have to wipe again and setup without a pin/fingerprint and then add again, or hope TWRP is updated by then?
Here is what I did to get root on 8.1:
1: Flash factory image of 8.1 WITH the "-w" (wipe) command
2: Boot up and set up the system (and updated apps while I was there)
3: Reboot into bootloader
4: fastboot BOOT TWRP 3.1.1-1
5: Flash TWRP 3.1.1-1
6: Reboot to recovery
7: Flash Magisk v14.3
8: Reboot to Android
I'm now running 8.1 with Magisk v14.3, and root it working as it should. I also have TWRP 3.1.1-1 installed, functional, and accessible via reboot without the need for a computer.
I just adb sideloaded the latest Magisk beta after the data decryption failed and I have root.

I know this may sound stupid, but is there a more complete guide to this? I was able to root on 8.0, but I'm not sure I understand your method. Do I just type these commands into adb?

Worked perfect for me. Since I setup phone, fingerprint and pin before I installed TWRP and magisk, it bootlooped.
So, I re-flashed the 8.1, and then followed steps 3-8.
Thanks!

[GUIDE] Root using Magisk, keep stock recovery for OTA

This is a guide for people who want a rooted MIUI. It will keep stock recovery and system partitions untouched to allow MIUI OTAs to install without problems. It will also pass Google's safety net test so bank apps keep working. The best of both worlds really
Requirements:
- Unlocked bootloader
- Windows PC
- fastboot (present in the miunlock app folder)
- Latest TWRP (download here)
- Latest Magisk (download here)
Steps:
- Install latest Magisk app
- Put latest Magisk zip on your device storage (SD)
- Shut down device
- put latest twrp.img in miunlock folder
- Connect phone to PC
- Press volume down and power button to boot to fastboot mode
- Open "Command Prompt" on your PC
- Type: (without quotes)
----- "cd C:\Users\[your name]\Desktop\miflash_unlock-en-2.3.803.10" . (or wherever the folder is)
----- "fastboot devices"
----- "fastboot boot twrp.img"
- In a few seconds, TWRP will boot on your phone. DO NOT swipe to make changes to system.
- In TWRP, flash the Magisk zip
Enjoy root

Same as my question. Let say system partition won't touch by root, but twrp is installed over the Mi stock recovery. Will it install Eta?
This guide DOES NOT flash TWRP. Stock recovery remains so OTA updates work.
The only thing that is touched by this guide is the "Boot" partition to install magisk. You can restore stock "Boot" using magisk manager's uninstall option at any moment and be 100% stock again.
Ok, but is Xposed etc. possible?

Well... That's I mean, boot TWRP using adb
After have TWRP, how can i get update via OTA?
it successfully worked for Redmi Note 4 global beta/stable MIUI9.2
even installed camera api 2 using magisk module
Just a quick question. I've TWRP right now with SuperSU. So I'll remove SuperSU, flash Magisk in TWRP. All good till now, but I'd want the stock recovery, a flash-able zip maybe. How can I get it? From where?
**[EDIT]**
Okay. One can get it from fastboot ROMs available at MIUI website (here), extract the pack and get recovery.img.
Installed successfully on miui 9.2.1.0 stable
Now when a new update for magisk is released, how should i update it??
I have two questions:
1. Why does the bootloader need to be unlocked and how can I do that?
2. What happens to Magisk if I install an OTA?
I'd like to keep the phone untouched but I need to change emojis and with Xposed I can use Youtube in background.

Do you mean this?
When an OTA is available, please go to Magisk Manager → Uninstall → Restore Images. Do not reboot immediately or you will have Magisk uninstalled. This will restore your boot (or dtbo if available) back to 100% untouched stock images in order to pass verifications. This step is required before doing any of the following steps written below!

[Help] Be able to install OTA with loosing Root and Data

Hi,
I have a Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro Global with :
- Bootloader unlocked
- TWRP v3.3.1-0 (lastest)
- Magisk Manager v7.5.1 (lastest)
- Magisk v20.4 (lastest)
So I am rooted and want to keep it (with my data). ^^
Problem: I am still on MIUI v10.3.3.0 and can't install OTA because it makes me reboot on TWRP
I found some different posts like :
Link: https://www.the***********.com/install-ota-update-rooted-android-device-guide/
-> It doesn't work for me because I don't have the A/B partition (message from Magisk when I tried to flash it) and I don't have the "Install to Inactive Slot (After OTA)" option...
Link: https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-9t/how-to/guide-easiest-to-root-twrp-t4000209
-> I don't know if I have to do it, and when? (if needed, I have the boot.img of my current Global v10.3.3.0)
It seem I have to restore my stock recovery?
-> I see how to do it from TWRP, but I don't have the recovery.img file
How can I install OTA without lose my root and my data?
Thank you in advance,
Best regards.

You can keep TWRP and Magisk module, you will only need to patch the boot image and install it from TWRP to regain root after the OTA
- Download full Recovery/zip package 2.4 GB for your MI/IN/EU/RU you currently have with MIUI 10
- Flash that zip from TWRP (Install, zip)
- Reboot to TWRP, not to Android, otherwise you will loose TWRP
- Backup Boot in TWRP
- Reboot to Android. You shouldn't have lost your apps and settings. Magisk Manager will be there but no root
- From Magisk Manager take Install, keep Preserve AVB and Preserve Encryption (first two) but UNCHECK Recovery mode
- Choose to Patch image and navigate to the Boot backup you just made in TWRP, boot.emmc.win, 128 MB
- Reboot to TWRP, take Install, Image (not zip) and navigate to magisk_patched.img in Download
- Upon installing keep in TWRP and Wipe Dalwik and Cache, ONlY
-Reboot to Android - you will have root, your previous modules, rooted apps, all
PS: Doing OTA from System Update requires stock Recovery - that's why it reboots for you to TWRP and fails.
To be able to do OTA that way, you would need to first flash back your stock Recovery.
Then OTA update will fail and you wouldl have to force Full OTA.
At the end, you would also loose root - hence the above procedure is simpler, you even don't need PC, you will keep TWRP and you will only need to patch and install the patched boot image to regain root
Hi and thank you @zgfg,
So if I correctly understand, to be able to make OTA without losing my data and restore root, I have to :
1. Install stock ROM
-> When I did it on previous phone, I always lose everything, so are you sure?
2. Restart in TWRP (to not lose it)
3. Backup boot via TWRP
4. Go in Magisk Manager, and check "keep Preserve AVB" and "Preserve Encryption", but uncheck "Recovery mode"
5. Click on "Install" and choose "Patch image", then selected the boot image previous made with TWRP
6. Reboot in TWRP to install (image, not zip) this file created in the 5.
7. Wipe Dalvik and Cache
8. Enjoy
I found the following link on mi.com to allow me to download the Global v10.3.3.0 (zip and tar.gz) :
Link: https://c.mi.com/thread-2459743-1-0.html
Is it the good one?
Can I simply extract the boot.img of the file downloaded in the 1. and go directly to the 4. ?
Thank you in advance,
Best regards.

In the first post you said that you already have v10.3.3.0 and that you want to update
Hence why would you now download v10.3.3.0 - you should download v11 (supposidely), that the same newer version that OTA offers you
Yes, you can extract boot.img from that newer MIUI (v11) that you will download and flash but that requires PC - in my instructions you simply use TWRP and make backup of the boot image upon you do update
By extracting boot.img from v11 you will not save any step, you still must flash its zip (not tgz) from TWRP and you must nevertheless reboot to TWRP first
---
By flashing OTA zip (full, 2.4 GB) from TWRP, you should not loose your data and apps. I did it with Mi 9T (not PRO - you are not on the PRO forum) but things must work the same way for PRO for Global or EU (you must update to the same Global, EU, Indian, Russian as you already have, just fownload the same newer version that OTA offers you)
Hi back,
Yes, I am in Global (EU) v10.3.3.0 and I should want to use OTA (first I have, it is to go on v10.3.4.0, and I guess, I will have more after until v11).
So I can use directly v11 one?
Thank you in advance,
Best regards.

Better follow what OTA gives you. Find and download Recovery/zip for that Global v10.3.4.0 and install as suggested.
Later similarly follow the version numbers the same way as they come by OTA
