Gorilla Glass? - Samsung Galaxy Tab A series Questions & Answers

Hello everyone. I recently bought the Tab A 2016 10.1" with S Pen and was wondering if the display had gorilla glass? If so, what version? I can't seem to find this information anywhere online. Thanks

Don't think so.
Corning (the manufacturer of Gorilla Glass) lists all devices with Gorilla Glass on their homepage.
https://www.corning.com/gorillaglass/worldwide/en/full-product-list.html
The Galaxy Tab A is not listed there. Though neither are most other Samsung tablets. Even the high priced ones are missing.
Seems Gorilla Glass is mostly used in phones. Maybe for such big tablet displays Gorilla Glass is too expensive, or doesn't provide the same advantages as for smaller screens? Unlike phones you usually don't carry around tablets in your pockets where they could be scratched by keys. Which I suppose is the most common kind of damage where Gorilla Glass might actually help.

EDIT: I stand corrected. It doesnt appear to be the "gorilla glass". Its more like a tempered glass. Sorry for the misleading title.
Video above:
Reviewer did multiple scratch tests on the phone:
1) sharp metal objects inside a ziplock bag
2) use of a sharp nail
3) sharp screw
Hardly any scratch on the screen itself. Only when a box cutter was introduced did it enable a scratch to appear.
Also did a drop test: 3 hip level drop and 1 head level drop. Only after the 4th drop did the screen crack. However, the phone still seemed to work.
I don't understand Korean, but the box cutters look like they scratched the screen.
Strange test that show galaxy not scratch proof.
You tube vdo does not show fine scratches all over the phone that normally bothers everyday users.

Isn't gorilla glass just a marketing term for a plastic-glass composite made by corning. It's "gorilla" since it's more scratch resistant than polycarbonate just like any other glass-plastic composite/laminate would be. I'm sure the glass on the Galaxy S is virtually identical to that of the latest Iphone.
Gorilla Glass is a brand name I think?

Corning is a brand, Gorilla Glass is a product name.
Gorilla Glass is a name for toughened alluminosillicate glass. It is specifically distributed by Corning and telling people that you got a Lamborghini when you really got a ferrari is lying, even though they are both good. Tempered glass != gorilla, and it isn't certain that the newest iPhone has gorilla. They just say so b/c it's scratch resistant.
well, i had the galaxy s in my trouser pocket for one day.
there where no other things (keys etc.) in the pocket, only the phone.
in the evening i noticed a scratch on the display (not large, but visible on a bright background).
thankfully i was able to replace the phone with a new one, now i carry it in a bag all the time and i put a screen protector on the display.
Rough pockets eh? Screens just don't scratch themselves. You did something.

yeah, for sure
all i know is, when i have a new device i handle them with uttermost care.
as there was no bag with the galaxy i had to carry it one day without using one.
but i guess you are right and i should have known, that the cotton that pocket trousers are made of is known for its screen cutting and scratching properties.
of course, it could have been my fingernails. who knows?

Got a scratch on my screen

Thought that I would let everyone knows that there is a scratch on my screen. I don't know what happened and it is there.
Me too. There was absolutely no reason. So much for Gorilla Glass....

Which is why I ordered a screen protector and am super careful until it arrives.
The A500 does not have Gorilla glass, the Iconia dual screen laptop uses GG.
According to corning's site, all 3 iconia's have gorilla glass. Just checked it now

Wrong.
"Corning® Gorilla® Glass is used by more than 30 major brands and has been designed into more than 400 product models. Today there are more than 300 million devices with Gorilla Glass being used by consumers around the world. Due to customer agreements, we cannot identify all devices that feature Gorilla Glass. Click on the top left to take you where yo will find the list of products with Gorilla Glass .
What you are seeing is probably not a scratch. Try getting some good screen cleaning liquid and a microfiber towel.
I am almost certain that it's real gorilla glass.
So am I to understand only a gorilla can scratch the screen??
Gorilla glass is not scratch proof. It is harder and stronger than most of the other glass products in use today. That simply means that it will do a better job resisting scratches and breakage. It is not invincible.
I've had other products with Gorilla glass and have been quite impressed, but it's still worth protecting the screen.
That said, I'm sorry to hear about the scratch. I know they make kits for buffing the scratches out of glass fish tanks, but I don't know if they'd be of help. They're likely to cause even more damage.
I wish I had access to just a plain piece of Gorilla glass - it would be interesting to try a few methods of repair.
Best of luck.
gorilla glass
Many appliances. Like oven microwave cook ware have gorilla glass. Its just a name lots of glass companies use similar procedures to produce strong glass. So you likely have some in your home

The Samsung Galaxy note HAS GORILLA GLASS

This has been confirmed by dozens of XDA members who have gone above and beyond to confirm that it is indeed Gorilla Glass in the Note.
Ever since the release date, the feud over Gorilla Glass began and it ended a week later. Dozens of members contacted Corning and they said that many devices with gorilla glass are not shown in their list.
®That was for all you going "CORNING SAYZ DA NOTE HAZ NO GORILLA GLAZS"
I have read numerous threads where users have contacted Samsung and have reached the conclusion that it is indeed gorilla glass in our notes. On pretty much all the tech sites, they all list the Note as having Gorilla Glass.
Gorilla glass is Scratch-"resistant" not Scratch "proof" and even if it was Scratch proof, it would not be impervious to everything.
Gorilla Glass isn't magic, it is Glass and like any other Glass, sand can scratch it because Glass is just super heated sand.
Now, to those saying "GORILLA GLAZS IS DESIGNED TO B3 scrATCH PROOF"
Gorilla glass was created in the hopes of reducing shock from falls, to preserve the glass, while also giving adequate scratch resistance.
Hopefully, this will encourage people to spend the $20 on a decent screen protector to protect the $260 screen+ digitizer on their Note.

do you even know what gorilla glass is? even if the glass is made exactly the same way with exactly the same composition as gorilla glass, it's not gorilla glass unless corning says it is! do you have any proof that the galaxy note has gorilla glass? NO! geezz don't waste our time starting a new thread with absolutely no evidence

I own 2 other devices with Corning Gorilla Glass; an Acer W500, my Galaxy S2.
I honestly don't think you know what Gorilla Glass is. Google it.
Use the search bar and find the other threads if you want proof, or contact corning yourself.

It looks like they may be using the lotus glass instead of gorilla glass
http://www.androidauthority.com/corning-unveils-lotus-glass-29195/
Isn't this a good thing since lotus glass has much tighter property and better display features than gorilla?

Right! let me enlighten you a little, gorilla glass was never designed to reduce shock from fall, hence if u drop you phone sideways it will crack
gorilla glass isn't made just from sand like other glass, it has aluminium oxide in it (you know.. the stuff sapphires and rubies are made of)
pfft!
So it's magic?

I know it is not magic when seeing the scratchS on my GNote.
Please stop it with the Gorillas will ya. All this Gorilla talk is making me loopy.
Jesus, therz some stubbornly persistent ppl.
Corning had a patent for making GORILLA GLASS. It doesn't anymore. Once the patent expires, big companies usually start manufacturing their own version of the ex-patented product. it's cheaper and most of the times better, cuz it fits their exact needs. Moreover, sammy and corning play together for quite a while now.
So, NO, the Note doesn't have GORILLA glass but it does have a glass that is the same or better.
chrz and let's hope for no more threads on that sbj. starts to feel like a teen-problem forum here
Maybe the mods can create a new sub-forum dedicated to debating the glass used in the Note. That way we can talk about glass all day long without the clutter of less important topics related to using the phone.

lol. couldn't agree more.
On the Samsung Mobile Singapore facebook page, Samsung confirms that the Note has Gorilla Glass. This is the second time I've seen them say it!

Wow, thanks for that!
Now it's decided.
(Uh, do you think i'm being premature?)
I got proof!
I asked Samsung myself and they replyed with the answere: Yes, the galaxy note do have Corning´s gorilla glas. We´re sorry for not making this clear.
So there you have it!
Damn! I just dropped my Note on the street while walking.
5 foot drop. Scratches on the corners. Part of the plastic rim around one of the edges of the glass jumped away. Glass fortunately still fully intact. No scratches.
Phone operating as before.
Really bummed, but could've been much much worse.

I dropped it on the concrete floor 5 times now, once from a height of 1,5 m - no damage what so ever. Thank-you Samsung for choosing Gorilla Glass.
I dropped mine ~4ft onto concrete when getting out of my truck and it's practically undamaged. The plastic edge around the screen is scuffed on two corners (which I'll buff out at some point) but the screen is spotless, despite having landed face down. I've enjoyed over 2 months now of a slim, sexy, clear, case-free and screen protector-free phone.

After all the stories of scratched screens, I went ahead and got an SGP oleophobic screen protector for mine. While scratch protection may not be completely necessary, I will say that smudges are significantly reduced relative to my Galaxy Tab 10.1 with no SP. I'm actually sold on them after using this one.

how scratch resistant is the screen?

I bought a galaxy s advance 8 months ago and it says it has a gorrila glass screen, but i swear it scratches more easily than my old Galaxy s,
i just wondered what people thought of the screen on the nexus 4?
cheers
jon
The original Galaxy S also features gorilla glas.
As far as I know gorilla glas 2 is just i thinner version of gorilla glas so it's going to be just as hard/easy to scratch as the screen on the Galaxy S.
I think the S2 uses Gorilla Glass 1 and I've not had any scratches on that over the past year. I'm guessing if this is the next version it should be stronger and more scratch resistant.

Nope. Same resistance, just in a thinner form. Which makes your phone thinner, lighter and the screen brighter and more responsive to touch.

[OFICIAL] Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 has Gorilla Glass screen!

I was wondering if our device has a scratch-resistant (Gorilla Glass), and i asked it on Samsung Live chat confirmed that it does have Gorilla Glass, but he doesn't know which version it is (I tought it's the first gen of Corning display)...

Tab 2 no it doesn't have Corning Gorilla glass, the galaxy tab instead it.
See the section "product with gorrilla" on the site corninggorillaglass
googled it quick, and it seems it doesn't.
"Although the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 will not offer Gorilla Glass, it will offer Samsung's own Glass panel that offers impact, shatter and scratch resistance." - Samsung rep.
I think it is not the official Corning Gorilla Glass, but it has a resistant screen. I've seen a lot of drop test on youtube, and the SGT2 was the only tablet I've seen so far to resist falling directly on the screen.
Wish the screen had anti-fingerprint protection, because mine gets very oily, with low usage.
