VS995 (Verizon V20) ver. 14B on Tmobile? - LG V20 Questions & Answers

Hello,
I've been using verizon for literally 10+ years and recently came across Tmobile's unlimited plans.
The value just makes me want to switch over! But I don't know much about the current situation.
1. Will the verizon variant / vs995 work with tmobile? I read that the VS995 lacks 1 band that Tmo uses, but it seemed like software restriction.
Found this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/v20/help/verizon-branded-lgv20-tmobile-4g-lte-t3491281
Does this mean it works by changing some settings without rooting?
2. If it does require root, can you downgrade and root? I read that 14B blocked rooting.
3. Has anyone successfully used their verizon v20 in tmobile, with full 4g speeds/functionality? Any input is appreciated!

I'm using Verizon v20 on t-mobile right now. It works fine most of the times but sometimes after a fresh boot i don't get 4g signals for a while and i have to turn on airplane mode and then turn it off. Didn't have that issue on the verizon s7 edge on t mobile.

Moto E xt1526 - use GSM SIM, going round and round

Greetings fellow telephony addicts - purchased a Boost Mobile Moto E w/5.1 (xt1526) because of apparent ease of ul'ing bl and rooting. True enough --
However since then I've been trying to get the device to allow use of a GSM SIM (USA/att.) Recently did it on a vzw (xt1528) no problem following instructions found here bit the xt1526 has beaten me senseless, going so far as to install cm13 in a totally illogical move. It works beautifuly, if you don't need calls or mms. Searched the crap out of the E forums with a couple of tips that did not pan out.
Anyone give me any hints /tips or even a nay as in "you dummy you can't to that!"
TIA,

Boost / sprint xt1526 are locked so that us domestic GSM Sims are not recognized. To my knowledge, no one here has yet gotten around this. I switched from a sprint branded one to a USCellular, which is fully SIM unlocked out of the box, bootloader unlockable, and supports att LTE. Using it right now with my postpaid ATT SIM

Thanks - That puts an end to the quest, no harm no foul -- On to the next phone!

Only thing I can think of is to flash the RADIO from a variant that isn't SIM locked and seeing if that works. It's a risky experiment tho... it could definitely brick the device in terms of ever being able to connect to a cell tower again.
Closest match is the USC 5.1 stock ROM's radio, which has the same model number XT1526, and is CDMA compatible, but that phone is also known to work on domestic GSM networks.
Double Thanks - Phone is useless to me as is so it's worth a go. Will report the results here.

Good luck! There was some discussion, in the CDMA development subforum iirc, about this a couple months ago.

I fell in the same trap, but you can still make the phone useful if you sign up for freedom pop or ringplus, i plan on keeping the phone as a backup and getting the N5X next week.

Yeah, I've got ring plus on mine with the totally free plan. Nice to have a CDMA emergency phone when my primary carrier is GSM.

Weird - I installed the complete USC 5.1 stock ROM - Everything seems to work fine, but the system version and the broadband version coming up as Sprint. US cellular is not a Sprint MVNO I don't think, but it seems to be kind of a hybrid in terms of networks? No option for switching the network to GSM/LTE in the settings that I can find.
Not sure what I'm going to try next...

Did you flash the Radio/Modem too? If not, that's why the baseband comes up as Sprint.
Dial *#*#4636#*#*, phone info, change "CDMA/LTE" to "LTE/GSM/CDMA auto (PRL)". If you can't do that, follow the 5.1 instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-e-2015/general/how-to-verizon-moto-e-2015-gsm-network-t3098953 (change the 9 to a 10 for LTE/GSM/CDMA)
This will allow you to change the phone to LTE/GSM/CDMA mode.
Isn't the NON-HLOS.bin file the modem file? I did the keyboard commands and got the phone info and was able to change it but it didn't change anything, live or after a reboot - same thing. did the adb shell commands and the same
thing, cellular network settings grayed out. I put back the sprint SIM that came with the kit and it was fine and the network settings are available...hmmmm.
I greatly appreciate the suggestions. I'm gonna leave the battlefield and get dinner or my wife will call me mean geeky names

Putting this thread to rest
Spent the last couple of days flashing the E with rom after rom, particularly of GSM phones, ATT, TM, etc and their respective radio files. And not to my surprise the phone works fine with every one of then regardless of model XTxxxx anything, phone runs flawless, except for the network of course, which always remains Sprint.
I have to conclude, unless someone can prove otherwise, that the phone network part is either embedded in the chipset as hardware or a combination of hardware and software, or the modem files are somehow protected from being overwritten.
Was interesting and educational.
Thanks to those who gave ideas or suggestions, especially you Mr. President

Ok –*question. If I put Cyanogenmod 13 (Lollipop) onto the Moto E 1526 (U.S. Cellular version) –*will GSM work on it? I need to buy my grandma a GSM phone who doesn't live in the States & I want the GSM card to be easy plug in play for her.
I know that the U.S. Cellular version is the best because it is unlocked for GSM as well, but I believe XT1526's default radio is CDMA.
Maybe I should get a GSM sim card here in the States and switch it to GSM on CM13 (if this is possible) –*that way all my grandmother has to do is put the sim card in without any hassle.

The device does do funky things with the radio on first boot on a new rom. I've run several CM based marshmallow roms. There's no real issue, but you need to go through the non-adb method (using the network app) to get GSM working on every new clean flash. Typically this means pulling the GSM SIM before initial boot (when I don't, the radio keeps cycling through modes making initial setup very difficult), do setup on Wi-Fi, turn off radio, insert SIM, then do the process.
I definitely would not give the device to a non tech savvy person before doing this on a clean flash. Once it's done, you can remove and reinsert Sims without issue.

Btw, when you say turn off radio –*you mean by using network app right? And you'r ereferring to these instructions from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-e-2015/general/help-confirm-5-1-how-to-verizon-moto-e-t3264258 ?: "Switch Sims

Yep, you got it. Actually, I don't think it's too picky about the order of operations as described in that thread - I've done this many times without referring to the thread so have likely done it "wrong" at times, and it still works. Basically, radio off (either via airplane mode or network app), switch modes, radio back on.
Just don't clean flash a rom without either access to Wi-Fi, or a locally installable copy of the network app.

Vzw LG G2 VS980 Global SIM Card Problem

I have a Vzw LG G2 VS980 that I currently use with Red Pocket on the Vzw network, and I previously used it on Tracfone, also on the Vzw network, and everything worked normally.
I also successfully used it with Red Pocket on the AT&T network as well as with an old Lycamobile legacy SIM, using the T-Mo network.
The problem I'm having is that I can't get cellular data to work using a Piranha Mobile or FreedomPop Global SIM card.
There are no error messages displayed, and I'm able to make voice calls with the Piranha Mobile SIM card. The FreedomPop Global SIM card doesn't come with traditional voice service, but there are bars of service showing.
The APNs are correct:
For Piranha Mobile, I'm using openroamer.com .
For FreedomPop, I'm using freedompop.foggmobile.com .
The Vzw LG G2 VS980 is rooted, but running stock 5.0.2. I rolled it back to stock 4.2.2, but cellular data still wouldn't work with the above SIMs. I also tried a custom ROM, and still nothing.
Can anybody suggest something to try to get cellular data to work with the above SIM cards? I'd greatly appreciate it!
I should also add that I DID enable global roaming in settings, and I did play with all of the System select>>Network mode settings, to no avail.
Also, even if people reading my question don't have an answer, if you could suggest some way to contact someone that could help, I'd be very grateful. Thanks again!
Isn't there any help available for my issue? Thanks.
I sure could use some help in figuring out how to fix this problem. Thanks!
Did you ever figure this out? I am experiencing the same problem

Unfortunately, no.
My LG G2 also was difficult to get activated on Vzw MVNOs. I used it on 2 Vzw MVNOs, and both times, it wouldn't activate the SIM card properly. Both MVNOs had to do quite a bit of work to get it to activate properly. There was no issue with the ESN/IEMI, it was just that the hardware wouldn't activate the SIM card properly.
Not only that, my LG G2 VS980 developed dead spots on the touch screen in March, 2017. It's still usable, but the dead spots make it difficult, so it is mostly retired now.
Oh, well...
I'd try getting into your G2's phone "diagnostic" menu (or whatever it's called), and doing a manual band set. That seemed to help me when I put in an AT&T SIM in my vs980.
It could also be that FreedomPop or whomever you're trying to use doesn't support the network bands that the vs980 uses.

Yes it does. It also says searching for signal whenever I reset my phone. It has internet but I can't receive text or calls until I make an outgoing call then it switches from searching for service to Verizon service. I wonder if it had anything to do with ims registration? (Says it's off )

Straight Talk /Tracfone does not block the service provided by Verizon. My new Galaxy S8 G950U Settings/ Advanced Calling /Activate, is a Verizon app that controls access. Without vzw service you can't activate.
Has anyone found a fix to enable activation? Hoping root comes through on this.
Note: ST after 4 calls to customer service said there is nothing they can do.

VoLTE on Unlocked S8 Through Straight Talk

I was wondering if there is a way to get VoLTE working on a factory unlocked S8 that is using a AT&T Straight Talk SIM card. Right now when I make a call, the data goes to 'H'.
Anybody?
I'm not sure if it's possible but have you tried carrier switch your unlocked S8 to AT&T firmware. That's the only way I could get it to work on my unlocked S8 but I do have AT&T though as a carrier
How did you get it to work on att? I am on att as well and it does not appear to be working after carrier switching my unlocked S8 to att branded also wi-fi calling does not work.

It worked for me the first time but then the second time I went back to the Oreo beta they went back to AT&T I was only getting H after that when I was calling so I had to borrow my wife's phone IMEI and they provisioned it and it worked again
so how exactly do i go about doing that? I assume this involves calling att or going into a store and giving them the imei from another phone? Does the imei you use have to NOT be already used or can it be in use by 2 phones at the same time? Also so far we have not even told att about this phone we have just moved the sim card so wouldn't they still have the imei of the old phone or do they pull that automatically OTA? If they do pull it automatically then whats preventing it from getting updated again?

? Using LG V20 H910 AT&T Model On T-Mobile After (2021) VoLTE Change

I posted this ? on reddit as well; however, this device is on its last legs so there's not much interest for it. I've gotten some good answers here and there on this website, but a dedicated thread to gather all the good info might be more helpful.
I still use my AT&T H910 as I don't really do much gaming on it. Calling, texting, and YouTube is what I mostly utilize it for. I just heard about the whole VoLTE requirement on specific devices after 2022 for AT&T, and 2021 for T-Mobile.
I spoke to AT&T, and they re-assured that the H910 was going to be one of the devices supported after 2022; however, I've been thinking about changing to T-Mobile (my family has a great plan with them, and I always switch back and forth between carriers based on who gives me the best deal) but I can't seem to get a straight answer from T-Mobile about whether my unlocked H910 will work with them after 2021; some didn't even know about the 2021 specifics of it.
I know AT&T will have to allow devices to be used on their network after 2022 even if they're VoLTE capable already. By the looks of it, T-Mobile won't go to that extreme; however, does anyone know exactly how VoLTE works? Specially in regards to using the AT&T H910 model on T-Mobile? Does my H910 has the required Bands to utilize VoLTE on T-Mobile? Or is it one of those things like "Wi-Fi Calling" where T-Mobile Wi-Fi calling only works with the LG V20 model from T-Mobile, and AT&T Wi-Fi calling only works with the LG V20 model from AT&T?
You need band 12 support which H910 has. Also a rom with IMS services working so no AOSP roms.
Volte works by using IMS processes in the rom to route phone calls over IP. No volte = no phone calls. But the device will still "work".
In theory the ATT software will work, unlock it and borrow someone else's sim. In theory a partial cross flash (just system, no modem/aboot/etc) could work if it doesn't.

I was recommended to use an app called Network Mode Universal on reddit for VoLTE testing purposes, and after inserting a T-Mobile SIM card that I borrowed on my unlocked H910 and using the application, the Voice Network Type tab says "LTE". Which is supposed to be a sign that VoLTE might be working on the H910 using a T-Mobile SIM, but that's all I know; just what people tell me.
Update:
The person who recommended that Network Mode Universal app forgot to mention that you have to actually make a call to know whether the phone supports VoLTE with the SIM card in use. When actually making a call, the Voice Network Type tab changes from "LTE" to "UMTS". Which means the H910 is not VoLTE capable on T-Mobile.

Could also be how his sim is set up. Volte has to be enabled there and in the phone. My suggestion would be to force LTE only on the device as well. Does it use VOLTE on his phone?
Also look at IMS registration in the phone and see if it's registered.

The person I borrowed the T-Mobile SIM from uses an iPhone on iOS 13. According to him, the option for turning on/off VoLTE from the settings is gone. He used to be able to turn it on and off at will; not anymore after iOS 13. It should be enabled by default on an iPhone though, I don't see why it would be off. It's almost a necessity on an iPhone I would think.
The LG V20 seems to be more limited in that sense, as on my previous Samsung phone I could enable 2G, 4G, LTE, etc, individually to force only one. I don't see any of those settings on my H910. I don't see any IMS info either.
Either way, I doubt T-Mobile would bother servicing my AT&T branded H910 phone in case IMS needed to be registered; in the case that it wasn't already. I've had really bad luck in the past dealing with T-Mobile on phones that are not T-Mobile branded.

IMS has a phone component and a sim component.
you can check status in the service menu of IMS on the H910. Hope it works on my Tmo phone, getting my sim upgraded

It should work if it's a T-Mobile phone. The H918 is 40% more expensive, so it would be great if the H910 worked with T-Mobile; however, it's not looking good.

Eh, kinda. I'm having trouble too. My IMS services aren't connecting. Going to try a few different roms. I'm through an MVNO so still trying to get them to understand ISIM vs USIM.

Gotcha, I hope it works. I was mentioning to @C D which has helped me understand a lot about VoLTE, that I'm starting to give in to the system of using whatever carrier my phone supports, as long as I can keep using my H910. The removable battery & IR blaster era has come to an end, and I don't think I need another phone right now other than the V20. I might even consider going back to the AT&T MVNO I was using before.

Latest result: oreo works but not nougat.
IMS never registers. Maybe I can fix it. At least now OK sim-wise. Unfortunately doing the sim swap broke tethering.
Hi guys, I am sorry for reviving the old thread.
I too owned H990DS Sea version on latest nougat. It has volte option but just couldn't switch on.
Please take a look at this thread on LG G8
https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...ther-qualcomm-powered-lg-devices-too.4343655/
I tried on my H990DS using the above thread's method and it didn't work. I was informed that the mbn files are for LG G8. We need mbn files that are specific for LG V20. I have searched up and down and I couldn't find any.
So I hope that I have provided some insights and I hope any member/master/guru out there can help where to find the mbn file (collection of all international carriers mbn) and make volte works for H990DS.
