pin-sized "rainbow" scratches

I bought my S5 a few days ago and absolutely love it. However, I've noticed a few pin sized dot scratches appearing in the short time having it. I'm confused because my previous phone the Note 3 has the same type of glass and it is flawless after a year.
Does anyone else have this problem? Thinking of getting a new one if it's an isolated case.

No idea what you mean by "pin-sized "rainbow" scratches". The very first thing that should have crossed your mind would be to attach a sharp, full resolution photo to your post so that we could see what you are referring to.
The only unusual glass defect that immediately comes to mind.. but doesn't appear to fit your description is an apparent oleophobic coating failure as described here.

Unfortunately, my phone is my only camera so I can't take a picture.
To describe it, it looks exactly like a tiny stuck pixel but changes colors in different angles. I know it's a scratch because I can slightly feel my nail on it.

Borrow a phone or camera to take a picture? Or (not as good) as an alternative, perhaps try finding a well lit mirror and try taking a picture of the phone with it's own front camera?
As to the defect, Corning Gorilla Glass is not invulnerable. I agree that it is pretty tough but it only takes one drop or slide on a rough surface to cause scratches or pitting. Did you lend your phone to anyone.. have a bit of sand in your pocket just once.. wipe your screen with a cloth that had a few grains of sand stuck in it just once, use your phone around any industrial acids or even under the hood of your car i.e near the car battery? These are just guesses though. Perhaps it's even coating defect a la the post I linked to earlier.
There simply isn't nearly enough information to draw any conclusions yet. A photo would certainly help.

Is this Screen Gap Bleeding Light?

Just notice it today after change of screen protector. Previous screen protector no such issue.

I uploaded new pics taken from ipad.
When i open a black color app. I dont see the green or red light at the gap. Screen protector doesnt cover that gap line too. But it did cover the right part. Where there no light bleeding.

There seems to be a problem with your screen. I don't think it has anything to do with the gap. Looks like you have an entire column of dead pixels. The gap (if you have it) is about 4mm away from the edge of the screen, so if you did have light bleeding due to the gap it would be away from the edge of the visible screen.

I run the test. No dead pixel. Could it be effect from glass protector?

You can't have backlight bleed on an AMOLED display. There is no backlight.

Light bleed on the edge part of the screen?

I'm I the only one noticing there are some pretty obvious light bleed going on if looking at the phone from the side? I never had any edge device before, so I'm not sure if this is normal. I don't really notice it at all if I'm looking at the phone straight, only when I'm actually looking at its edge. The effect is even from the left and right side.
Sorry for the crappy pic, I already returned my JOD note 5 to Tmobile, so I had to dig out a real old LG optimus F6 with its crappy 5MP camera... reminds me of how much smart phone camera have came along..

This is my first EDGE as well, but it looks normal to me. The edges the light has to be pointed upwards and with the glass being curved it cause more light to refract and build up so it looks "worse" than it really is(At least that's how I saw it).

I'd guess that due to the curved glass, the glass would refract the light causing it to look like this.

Afaik an amoled display can't actually leak light since every pixel is actually the light rather than an LCD where it uses a backlight. Instead as others have pointed out, you are just seeing the refraction caused by the curved glass and the way it bends the light being emitted.

Because the panle is on the edge and you looking at it from the side so tge light will be direct .

Yup that's normal. All previous edges had the same.

Now feeling a lot better after im sure phone is not defective

OK guys have any of you got light coming from between the screen an the metal frame ?

I must be really unlucky I'm now on my 3rd handset and all 3 have had same issue. I have got to the point where fed up with it now. Just not gonna be swimming with it.

I notices this the other day especially on bright white screens the edges between glass/aluminum frame bleed light thru. I have this on my wifes S7 edge as well as mine.

OK cheers good to know it's not just mine. Seems a bit odd how water resistant phone would allow light out in such a way if light can get out surley water can get in.

If I had to guess, this is most likely not light leaking through the crack, but rather just some light thats being manipulated by the curved glass and reflected onto the metal where it meets the glass. At least that's my best theory.

I wish that was the case my friend. I first thought that so I taped the sides of the screen to block the light and still comes beaming through both sides.

If light is bleeding thru the cracks does that necessarily mean its not water proof anymore? If so we have a big problem as both mine and my wifes phone has this issue. Although we aren't dipping our phones in water or going to test it out, its nice to know that they are indeed waterproof.

Well what im referring to wshouldnt be affected by tape. I mean the light essentially uses the glass like fiber optic and shines out onto the top of the metal.
Taping it off wouldn't effect this since the light we would be seeing is essentially in the glass still.

Just go to a white background on max brightness and hold the phone flat and look at where the glass meets the metal at like a 45 degree angle from above. You should be able to see it sort of lit up.

That's light passing through the glass and not any type of gap. Taping off areas isn't going to affect the light reflecting through the glass.

Scratches on display

Hi @ all,
I noticed quite a lot of micro scratches on my phone's display. They are not clearly visible, it depends how the light is shining against the display and on the angle. But I am really disappointed with gorilla glass 5. I own the phone for about 2 and a half months now... I use a case/bumper but no screen protective film but I treat my phone very carefully and it always goes into my pocket without any other things, just the phone. I did the same thing with my older S2, S5 and S7 and never got any scratches.
Is it normal for gorilla glass 5 to scratch so easily? I talked with my vendor and he would swap it for another unit using the warranty. But here comes my question: is the display with the red tint still an issue on new units? Could I risk getting a faulty reddish display? Because then I'd rather stick with my micro scratches and live with it.

Yes, you will probably get a reddish display.
No, it is not faulty, it's just how it is.

I ask this because my display has a good white tone and luckily no reddish tint at all. Is the reddish display still an issue with actual units?

Are you using adaptive display ?
Most displays will show reddish on other modes but white on adaptive.

Yes I am using adaptive display but I had previus units which I returned for reddish display even in adaptive display mode. My actual display is fine, despite some micro scratches... don't know if I should bother returning it again and risking to get a reddish display... don't know if it's worth the risk or just stick with the barely visibile micro scratches. What would you do in my situation?

Scratches are normal. Gorilla Glass 5 traded some surface hardness for more resistance to shattering. Basically, the harder the display the easier it brakes but doesn't scratch so much.
So gg4 was more scratch resistant than gg5. But I'd take a scratches but not broken screen over the other way round...

Thanks for the info To be honest, I really don't know what is worse, having a naked display with some barely visible scratches or "ruin" such a great display with a screen protector. :laugh: I hate screen protective films, these displays are just too awesome and should be enjoyed naked without having the fear of scratching them... I ordered a screen protective film but I don't know yet if I will go through the hassle of putting it on, it just doesn't feel right for me.

i just got my s8 and now ur making me worried, how bad are the scratches really? like bothersome ones you can see when using the device easily? or little scuff/rub marks

I first noticed them in a shop which had very bright and glaring room light. I was looking at my phone while the light was shining directly on the display. It was a coincidence more or less, who knows how long they have been there without me noticing them. In everyday use they are barely to not noticeable at all. Depending on the angle you only notice them with direct sunlight or halogen lamps pointing on the screen while the screen is off. Still, for this price the glass is a disappointment.

Screen is brighter on all edges

Hello everybody,
I just notice today that my screen has brighter frame all over the edges. It is not very noticeable, i can even say that it is faint, but it is there. And it it constant all over the edges so is not light bleed ( i know what light bleed is, i had many devices with light bleed) . It is more noticeable on white or light grey background . I think it is the glue that keep the digitizer and display togheter.
The phone is 1 year old.
It is a common issue or is just mine? Ca you take a look at yours a little with a little attetion please?

You sure it's not your screen protector not sticking on the sides perfectly? The 2.5D glass leaves a "halo" effect when you put a screen protector on.

No , it is not the screen protector , i'm 100% sure.
