Hi Folks
The volume up/down and bixby keys are not working on my S8. I have confirmed this is not a physical button related issue as i swapped out the motherboard with another and the buttons were working fine. So the problem seems to be a motherboard issue.
on the motherboard i checked for connectivity between the touch point (spring like stuff on the motherboard that pushes against the button contact points on the frame and connectivity is there. Not sure what to check next ?
Any ideas on troubleshooting this problem
Since you have it open, follow the traces from the contact points to wherever they lead. Check for any irregularities there.
Well i tried. Unfortunately there is no service manual available to even identify the small components. What i figured out so far is that there are four connectors on the board. the following combination shorts when the key is pressed
1-4 - Volume up
1-3 - Volume down
1-2 - Bixby
I can trace 2,3,4 to the next point but cant figure out where it goes after that. The pin 1 i assume will have to be at a higher voltage, again cant figure out where it comes from.
EDIT: Of did some more research and testing and found the pins 3 and 4 used for volume up and down are at 1.8V and the pin 2 for BIXBY is at 3.2V. The pin 1 is at ground. In my case pin 1 was not connecting to ground.
Some more testing later i realized that the pin connects to ground on the other side of the board same position. Did some soldering there and connectivity to ground was re-established and the buttons started working again.
I assume that the connectivity broke when i heated the back and front of the phone when replacing the broken display. This would have caused the existing solder to melt and disconnect. Surprising thing is i dont remember heating it to such a temperature that should cause the solder to melt.
Anyways problem solved and some lessons learnt
hello I have exactly the same problem that I have yet replaced the tablecloth volume is button but it does not work, can you give me more explanation and detail on the connection of the earth thank you very much for your help

Hello there guys!
Recently my M2 power button stopped working, there is no click whatsoever. I checked it up and it seems that the small metal piece fell somewhere inside the phone. I found this dissasembly video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BUXSmlwUC9Q
Now here is my question : it looks like while dissasembling you are ripping the phone apart, is there any permanent damage when trying to dissasemble? I could do it by myself, pasting the metal piece inside but I m a bit concerned about damaging the phone.
Thanks
Strange Milestone 2 power button problem
Hi, I have a strange problem in the power button too, but it's very rare (may be rare just for me)
The thing is that the power button suddenly stops working. If i take off the battery and put it again the phone boots without pressing the power button, and it still not working. Then after some time, it suddenly starts working perfect there is no need to press it stronger then normal.
I can't find out any patterns in this behavior. Another strange thing that happens is that sometimes the button works intermittently and delayed. Example: I do a long press of the power button and nothing happen, then the shutdown dialog shows 2 seconds after. And some times (the most) it doesn't
I'm a little bit confused about it, any ideas?
I've new info: i can't get into bootloader mode (the phone turns on but i get a black screen with no text)
Think I am getting the same power button problem now. How did your repair go?
Same problem here now, dunno if its really related to the power button or something
completely different is going to break down soon.
I will try to replace the whole flex cable with the buttons, but shipping needs some weeks.
I have successfully replaced the screen on the HTC HD2 Leo, but after assembling the phone the volume button is not working. I am not sure if there can be something missing as I cannot feel the 'click' when it's pushed. (not sure if it was there before though)
As far as I remember the volume button consist of two parts: the printed circuit and the plastic button. Or is there maybe something that needs to be connected that I have missed?
Thanks for any hints

dismantle it again, it can be the plastic button its self, it acts like a spring under its own tension, when I re built mine the first time the lower button had stopped worked well, and it was simple because I hadn't put it back right, it was, and it looked right, but it wasn't quite right
I would a agree with dazza9075. Sometimes when putting the phone back together it may look right but sometimes its not. If i remember correctly there is a little spot it fits right into but you need to make sure it goes in in just the right way,
both on the top and the bottom. There is a complete how to guide to replace the lcd screen on the HD2. If i find it I will post the link. It may clear up just how you need to place the vol button back in place. Worse case you can always find a
cheap volume button for only a few dollars on ebay to see if maybe you broke this one when trying to replace the screen.
Hi, I did not manage to fix the button, but managed to get by without it.Till now. I was looking in google for a solution and found my own tread from ages ago...
Now, I would need to put the button together again. I looked into it and I guess I am missing a piece that the plastic button is supposed to be pushing. Before I order something, can anyone please confirm and possibly post a picture of what the button it should look like under the plastic part. Also if you know what the part I need is called, please let know. Please see below how my button "circuit" looks like.
Many thanks for any help
This is what you should have bellow the button

Thanks for your response. I could not find the buttons separately and have therefore ordered the button ribbon for the 5 hw keys for under $3, which hopefully will be possible to dissemble and transfer. I would rather not buy the whole flex cable, where's the button is attached to, as this is quite expensive $20+.
I let you know if I was lucky. If you know where I can buy only the small pieces I am missing, please let me know.
A pic of what I ordered is attached fyi
i can confirm that you can use buttons from that tape, I've had the same situation, just pick up the circle button and add it to volume tape.
Mine was damaged during assembly, you have to be very carefoul
You can actually do lcd & digi removal & refit without need to remove flex ribbon completely thus keep the volume button & cables running to mainboard all in place and those small button caps are safe still wrapped in original tape & it all goes back together factory style ...
Hello everybody,
does anybody here see a connection between missing volume buttons(physical switches on the camera module 04w2155) and the tablet doesn't start?
As backgrund info.
Tablet is doing only short vibration when trying to power on, or when connecting to charger. When connecting charger led on the back is flashing but i don't get anything on the display or other feedback except the short vibration. I suspect also some damage with the screen, but cannot confirm. Tablet has a repair of the power button.
Thank you
You might be in APX mode, which doesn't activate the display.
Press the battery-disconnect button inside the tiny hole next to sim card slot and then try to power up your tablet.
Thanks for reply/hint.
What reset did is that for around half a minute the red led was lightning continuously, not blinking. After thag blinks again.
After research about apx mode i'm more and more certain this is my situation, it's active now.
If i connect to computer, it does recognize, search for driver and then disconnects within few seconds.
Since i see this more like a software problem could i stabilise the connection to the computer and recover informations/make backup and restore rom?
Thank you!

We are making progress!
My guess - not to answer your latest question but to the original one, is that your missing volume buttons (physically missing, yes?) very much have something to do with the tablet's current condition. To get to APX mode, the tablet must be started from cold boot with power AND volume pressed at same time (physically pressed). If your missing buttons are registering as being 'pressed' all of the time, it may be difficult to create a boot situation where you can get to your android desktop.
Could you elaborate on the missing buttons?
Please someone else chime in here - I don't even have my tablet.
Thanks for reply.doesn't matter for which question. I put together any information. Issue is getting clearer.
I got the tablet in this condition and attempt repair. Power button was down so i soldered back.
Now the thing is somebody worked before in this area and i suppose the actual powerbutton is one of the volume buttons since the work done before doesnt look professional. I suppose they destroyed the powerbutton and desoldered a volume button to resolder as powerbutton. Which possibly is the case for both volume switches. Now the two vol buttons are nowhere.
The switch has 3 pins,of which the ones at the sides have continuity when the switch is unpressed.
I suppose for boot it could require that the 2 volume switches to be present, that means it could have some continuity check through the switches, and if they are not present it cannot start.
I cannot simulate the 2 buttons because for one switch the soldering pad on the board got burned.
I am going to upload pictures in 5-6 hours when i get home.
If this proves to be somehow true i would order another brand new camera module with all 3 switches, but now i'm unsure if with new board it could start, at least for flashing/recovery.
But having it vibrating and red light flashinv i see a sign it's not yet a "unrecoverable brick"
What do you think?
Thank you

Anybody any idea about this case?

I think it is definetely a screen damage, maybe a conection cord. Try to clean/replug this cord (cant remember now where it is). This short vibration indicates, that device is begining to boot. Right after vibration Lenovo logo should apear on the screen. If it doesnt - screen is down...
About power board - no connection between power and volume buttons for sure. Power button: + is central, - is other two.
stas.green brings up a good point. If you have opened up the tablet, it is very easy to disconnect the flat ribbon cable that runs the display. When I installed my 3G card the same thing happened to me. Freaked me out but it took 30 seconds to open it back up and correctly seat the cable.

stas.green you're right. the problem is with the screen. i powered the tablet and conected to the computer. i could see the memory access the files and make a backup.
i'm going to examine where is the screen problem origin and possibly to fix it. the screen cables i checked, they fit good. any other weak point known to you?
thanks for help
My next suggestion, not to fix the screen, but to get some function back - connect the tablet to a TV via the mini-HDMI port and see if you are booting to a normal desktop. Hopefully 'External Display' is already enabled. At least you would be able to test if the touch and pen functions of your screen and confirm if they still work even though your backlighting may be broken. Shining a flashlight at an angle on the screen may make the desktop visible if the backlighting is the issue.
Good luck!
My dhd volume buttons stopped working a while ago (unless u press really hard). I ordered a new button and it arrived a month later, now even with the new button, they r not working .
Also pushing the buttons with a pencil tip (without the volume rocker) still doesn't make it respond easily...almost completely dead
What am I supposed to do to fix it? DIY possible? Any suggestions are much appreciated.
Hey look buddy. I had the same problem and I have resolved it by replacing, by myself, the mother board were the volume buttons were attached . It's a DIY thing. Just order from ebay or any local mobile service parts from your country, the upper main board ( upper mother board ) and then search on youtube, how to disassemble the phone. Just to be very careful when you open up your phone because it's a little tricky, and remember the order of your steps.
Good luck !
Good afternoon, see if you can help me.
I have received a Psmart that got wet and with some rusty part, I have managed after cleaning the rust and changing the screen (15e) that everything works except the power button.
The button works well but looking at the motherboard it seemed to me that something was missing and looking for photos I have located that the rust ate the resistance of the power button, and therefore it does not turn on (to turn on, I disconnect the battery and then I connect it to the power supply)
Could someone tell me the value of that resistance?
I attach an image of the area of the plate and a diagram of the resistances, I am missing the one indicated with the arrow that I put as 1.
Thanks!!
