Personally, I don't think there's enough changes to upgrade from the Honor 8, but I really want to see that gray color in person! Other than that, the fingerprint reader on the front seems like a step backwards in functionality. The rear button on our Honor 8 is programmable and so useful because of it.

I'm sure it's programmable, it's one of their features of EMUI. Front FPS is nice because you can wake it up and unlock while it's laying flat on a desk, you can't do that with a back FPS. If they offer a big sale up front for pre-orders in the US, I might consider it.
Hope HUAWEI can improve EMUI to be more useable... Now I feel that EMUI is more and more like the old Samsung TouchWiz...

It's a copy of the P10 and it does not have a programable button. It didn't even have a button. It's just a piece of glass
I hate that the fingerprint sensor is front mounted now. It just makes the lower bezel bigger,
fingerprint might be the same as O+3 have. It's really great.

Well, why not just press power key and unlock using password?
Back finger print sensor can operate the phone with one hand, unlock, slide down for notification which can't be done by front finger print sensor comfortably.

That would cause wear down on the power button more quicky. And besides, it's fingerprint sensor. Why not use it as a security tool for unlocking the phone?

Of course it's possible, doesn't make it convenient. Why not use a 32 character alphanumeric string for your phone password?
Also the slide gesture for notification shade is more inconvenient than simply adding the notification shade drop down as a 4th nav bar button, so that feature isn't a deal breaker for anyone.
The only mistake they've done it's replacing the FP to the front

It's a button that is programable to do anything, not just gestures. That's why we don't like the solid state reader on the front that cannot be pressed.

A fair point, it comes down I suppose to how someone uses the phone. For me, I never found a use for the fingerprint button that I ever truly used regularly, other than the novelty. Losing that functionality won't impact me, but I can see how it could impact others.

Me too. Back in EMUI I programmed the smart key to some things I needed most of the time. But I found myself rarely using it.

The best use I found for it was mapping the Voice Search functionality, I used it to create reminders for myself in Google Assistant. Other than that, there wasn't much I could think of that helped me.

Mine was sing click for Music and long tap for flashlight. The flashlight shortcut was the more useful.

That so surprising, most reviews and myself included will state that they programmed the button to launch at least two of these key events:
Google search
Camera
Flashlight
Calculator
I use it every day for these items as it doesn't require me to unlock the phone and navigate to the icon. It saves a step or two and that's the key to efficient phone usage to me. It's the same reason why I can't stand iOS. It often requires more clicks to do the same task than it would on Android.
Just out of curiosity but why would you buy the H8 if the FPS on the back doesn't suit you. I specifically chose the phone (among other things ofc) because it's the most efficient and convenient FPS for me personally.
Pretty big deal how you unlock your phone imo given how often one does it.
Also i programmed all the gestures in the beginning as well and never used them apart from the flashlight .
I guess to some extent its just old habits that die hard

I know how you feel. you know, I never learn. When the Omnia was announced I bought it. Was disappointed and sent it back. Then.. WOW! the HD looks cool! Bought it for £500! I've just arranged for it to be returned. Quite a disappointment all round really. Design as you say isn't great, its heavy too for its size. Not may apps run on it including TT5. Its no upgrade from the Diamond in my opinion, well not £500s worth.
I put my sim in my diamond again today and thoughthis is better, and looks better. Bye Bye HD. All I need for my diamond is a better battery, £50 done.

Yes, if you want to delete it right away - this is not a camera, this is an extreme piece of garbage. Maybe HTC device users are used to this I don't know. But I was simply shocked. It's so slow that it's simply impossible to capture anything that moves faster than continents are drifting.

Come on, they just don't make good phones, admit it. Any phone has tons of stupidities. There's no other choice but to accept the least of the evils out there. Somehow making excellent things just doesn't seem an attractive business model anymore. It's just so much easier to stick a stupid 3.5mm jack for headphones with no data capability for a remote control (people will buy this no matter it's less convenient in practice than extUSB Audio, if you think about it for a moment), and make a camera with a bigger megapixel count that a competitor has.

Camera with bigger mega pixels and ever crappier plastic lens just annoys the hell out of me, but unfortunately they get away with this; because the majority of people are stupid (or ignorant, or whatever.)
Being less harsh..... I suppose in the grand scheme of things all this technology is new, once the expectation & experience of the general public catches up, finally we will see better devices.

Seems to me that people forget that this is a cell phone first...it's not a digital camera with a phone feature.

yes the reset button is poorly placed as is the volume rocker and having no dedicated camera button is weird as well.
in saying that the main fetaure of the hd over others is the screen size and display resolution.
there is no 'perfect' device, if there ever was then they'd have no room to make future stuff.
I'm pissed with the poor camera and lack of flash and it really wouldnt surprise me whetehr they release a simialr version within the next 6-12 months with these fetaures. but if they had everything we wnated this time, why would we buy the next model?

Funny how millions of iphone (same location of power button) users and hundreds of HD users never complained about this problem. may be you need to examine if you are holding the phone correctly. I can turn on the phone with my either hand, my teenage children can turn on the phone with either of their small hands.. my judo coach can turn it on with either of his giant paws. so unless you have 4 fingers on each hand, i am baffled at your complaint.

first of all wtf is "autoportrait"? you mean portrait picture? or self-portrait? or auto focus? I haven't heard of one camera that can "autoportrait" a picture for me. Secondly, I take pix on HD with one hand, landscape or portrait. the friends to whom I showed my phone to for the first time snapped pix one-handed. You are like an old grandma who doesn't want to change the way you do stuff because you are used to your thumb being the "holder" and index finger being the "trigger". if you need help, i'll be mroe than happy to take a pic of how me and my friends operate this phone with one hand.

If you are not using any third party software to adjust the light, then yes, the screen tend to be brighter than it should. but it definitely never came to a point in any condition where the backlight is off and i can "see nothing". If you are using a third party software, then it's your own laziness that needs help so you can adjust the software's settings to best suite your enviroment. I use G-Light and it is working wonderfully.

I find it perfectly easy to turn the phone off one handed. I haven't had cause to use the reset button yet so who cares where it is. Not to mention that you don't want it in too convenient a location lest it is pressed by accident! The movement of the device while on a flat surface is minimal. Admittedly the fact that the volume buttons don't lock is annoying but something I am sure can be solved with software. The lack of a camera button is a minor irritant although accidentally pushing the button and activating the camera on my Trinity was also slightly irritating.
I would suggest that your list of "Major Flaws" hardly adds up to a minor irritant and if you are so frustrated by such small things then I doubt you are ever content. Nothing is perfect, to expect such is foolish and will only ever end in disappointment...

They did not complain because they don't know they could have better. Yes I can turn it on with either hand also, but it is very inconvenient. If you think this button is well placed, then you must have both hands left.

Yeah right, if it is not design flaw why should I ever use any third party sw to disable it? If you have to find a way how to deal with it it mean it's flawed, period. Volume button on Elf was just fine no need to bother how to disable it.

It has flawed hw, no software will help you, as I said light sensor is not sensitive enough to see difference between normal lighting condition in my room and pitch black, so everything in between is the same. So you cannot set different backlight for normal room and dark night.

You dont need third party software, a small dll edit sorts it out and some people want to be able to adjust the volume while the device is locked so they can easily change music volume.
The light sensor is suprisingly sensitive. Do as instructed, install G-Light and all your backlight woes will melt away

Light sensor is not sensitive enough, I installed GLight, thats how I found out.
The thing that I dont like with HD is .... current TouchFlo 3D.
HD has 3.8" screen, great 800x480 resolution ... but that TF3D Today screen is just waste of space because it can only display 2 appointments.
To make it worse, I cannot install Today plugin there.
Oh yeah, I can disable and use other Today application like the old HTC Home, SecondToday or SpB Mobile Shell ...
You right, but that's not the point ... HTC should have done it right to incorporate the new hardware ... the big screen with its software, user interface, and such.
Another one, why the contact photo tab could not have "tiled" (arrange to grid) photo arrangement? I hate scrolling just to find the correct contact photo. The contact photo in Manilla is better.
Another one, why the image viewer could not operate in full screen? Yes, I know, the sliding flow animation is nice for showing off .... but to have option for full screen is much better.
So, thanks to current economic crisis, I decided to wait for the next iteration.

as much as we dont like the tf3d, we have to realize, htc gave this to us for free. other companies, charge for such a program, spb mobile shell, etc.
secondly, even you agreeed this is a beautiful phone, so htc did a great job. software wise, ms mobile is bad. even worse, ms didn't open their platform, so htc can't implement this "touch " shell deeper into the OS. given their fortay is in the hardware, and this giiant obstacle, i say they did an admirable job.
as for the appointmments, using advanced config tool, i can seethe appointments of the next two days. give it a try.

What do you mean by that? Go to Album, see the thumbnails, tap on a picture and voila - you have it in full screen.
Is there any way we can tweak the fingerprint scanners unlocking procedure without swipe?

No. The iPhone can do this due to the shape of the home button, and the amount of the fingerprint that can be read without movement because of that. The shape of the home button on the S5 works against this as it only reads a thin strip of the print unless you move the digit.
The only possibility I can think would be a hack to reduce the amount of the fingerprint required for a positive ID. And even if that was possible it would by it's very nature reduce the security offered by the fingerprint reader which could cause issues with the Paypal certification.
Perhaps the videos I have seen were overly simplistic and I'm not getting my S5 until Friday so can't speak from experience, but using the thumb to unlock looked a simple procedure to me and easy enough to do one handed.

I've got to hand it to HTC. I used to change my phone every 2-3 months tops, getting bored with every offering out there. I've had all the flagships one can imagine, yet I haven't changed my phone for the past 6 months now, and what's worse, I don't think I will change it before the 'M9' comes out. The M8 is simply the best device I've ever owned bar none. Build, usability, reliability, the list goes on and on..... Even the slight curve on the back of the device allows for incredible handling. It's like they've mastered every detail. Negatives? like everything in life, yeah. The power button is on top and not on the side and is hard to reach. The battery life could be better. The bezels could be thinner. The finishing (loose volume rockers, sim trays, etc) could be better on some devices. But these are issues available (along with a catalog of others) on MANY if not all other devices. I bought a Z3 a few weeks back and it didn't last a few days before I sent it packing. The only thing about that device was the battery life, it was unbelievable. But the ageing M8 still trumps it overall.
Am I the only one addicted to the M8?
One man's negative is another man's positive. Hated the power button on the side of my Note II. Always inadvertently hitting it putting screen to sleep. Much prefer on top.
Otherwise agreed. Hands down best android handset I've owned to date.

Actually a feature that I(Personally) am not to thrilled about. It's a great idea but it's overly sensitive, if you clean the screen the screen comes on and you delete an app on homescreen or place hangouts into a grouped folder with whatever else. Removes the clock widget...just does random nonsense because for reason cleaning the screen(Without lifting your hand) equates "double tapping". It started to annoy the hell out of me until I eventually disabled it.
Using the power button is only a fraction of a second longer and makes no real difference, especially if you constantly need to double tap when you actually need it in order to unlock the phone or... turn it a bit sideways first in order to get out of hibernation so taht the sensors work correctly in order to wake on tap. Annoying as hell, for me personally, it's a great idea gone awfully wrong pretty quickly.
Other than that, I have no issues with the phone really(Camera is a given but I don't use camera often so...) and I'm very happy months after receiving it.
i dunno, i had a at&t m8 over the summer and i loved it. now that i have the tmobile variant it just seems buggy as hell to me. gonna hold onto it until the m9 comes.
no need to use the top power button.

It's like they've mastered every detail. Negatives? like everything in life, yeah. The power button is on top and not on the side and is hard to reach. The battery life could be better. The bezels could be thinner. The finishing (loose volume rockers, sim trays, etc) could be better on some devices. But these are issues available (along with a catalog of others) on MANY if not all other devices. I bought a Z3 a few weeks back and it didn't last a few days before I sent it packing. The only thing about that device was the battery life, it was unbelievable. But the ageing M8 still trumps it overall.

install any screen lock application, I personally use screen lock by Katecca, it works great, simple efficient coding. You can power of the screen using the gesture that opens google search. slide from the home button navbar towards the top. Good luck.

Agree, I use the app Screen Off. Does the same thing and adds some cool looking animations when you turn your screen off. I get a lot of "WOW that was cool, how'd you do that" comments when my friends see it in action. I rarely use my power button now but I like the location because my Vivid's was in the same place. I agree that the double tap to unlock is a bit sensitive but I still use and like it a lot.
I've still not found that very annoying thing about this phone and I don't think I will since I've had it for 3 months now. This phone rocks

Using the power button is only a fraction of a second longer and makes no real difference, especially if you constantly need to double tap when you actually need it in order to unlock the phone or... turn it a bit sideways first in order to get out of hibernation so taht the sensors work correctly in order to wake on tap. Annoying as hell, for me personally, it's a great idea gone awfully wrong pretty quickly.
Other than that, I have no issues with the phone really(Camera is a given but I don't use camera often so...) and I'm very happy months after receiving it.

Lol just hold the phone anyway except upright in portrait when you clean it. Screen will not come on. ?
Dt2w only is active in portrait upright position. Took me a bit too to think of that when cleaning the screen.

This is even cooler if you use Nova launcher as you can set it to turn off the screen by double tapping anywhere on your homescreen. Saves having to scroll to find the icon. And yes the CRT-off animation is cool.

I tried NOVA on my old phone and didn't really get into it.
Don't need to scroll to find the icon just swipe up from the home button up. :good:
I like the zoom out animation. I used CRT off too and is another favorite but I switch it about once a week.

It actually opened screen when it was lying flat on back, but anyways. Appreciate the tip but I'll hold off on that DT2UL for now. Like I said, pressing the power button isn't an effort at all it's rather fast and easy so...
I'm sure they'll improve more and more on those double tap to unlock but it's not something that I'm too concerned with myself. :good: :highfive:
It's a very handy feature IMO and saves wearing out the power button. Also ScreenOff app to lock the phone.

That's true of course. I just don't know about constantly tapping the screen, won't that also inevitably cause some issues with the touch screen? All that constant "shock" to the screen?
I actually think the Dot View case is better in that regard. It uses a magnet to unlock the screen. The magnet is in all the HTC one M8 phones so why can't all the flip covers at least have a magnet in place to automatically unlock the device once the cover is opened? Much more simpler, no more hitting power button to unlock, no more tapping screen to unlock.
Of course it'll be a different story for people that don't have flip covers for their phones but still.
I only use the power button to "wake" the device when needed, I usually just put it one side and let it lock/sleep on its own. So at least I'm "halfing" my use of the power button :silly:

I might be one of the few who doesn't mind the power button being on the top. but i have long fingers. At least they put it on the right side this time. Also Please dear lord, don't make those bezels smaller. It's hard enough as it is with these thin as hell bezels. I'll say this is a trend I'm gonna hate in 2015.

What's 'hard' with the thin bezels? It makes the footprint of the phone smaller. The only downside I could see is that it might be easier to shatter the screen if it's too close to the edges. But I'd take that for a smaller device.
As for DT2W being a replacement to the power button........ No Thanks. I don't like that feature one bit. First of all, it's a battery drain. The panel is always 'on' and waiting for input from the user. Secondly, it's way too sensitive. I constantly used to find the screen on when I carry my phone.
It takes literally a tenth of a second to push the power button. No need for tapping the screen. Just put it on the side next time please! Even Apple got it right with the iPhone 6 because they know it's too big to have a button on top, it's out of reach. Come on HTC, I'm sitting here saying you SHOULD COPY APPLE. That's how BAD I want this

Dt2w is not a battery drain on phones that designed the system to run it, like the M8 and G2. Yes, it's a huge drain on devices that the features been cooked into the kernel, like the N5, by our awesome devs here.
Anyway, I usually get 8 hours+ screen time with my setup and usage... And I've tried disabling Dt2w and the rest, not noticeable difference in battery life.
Not for me anyway. ?

Yep M8 like G2, OPO, iPhone have an extra processor to handle motion gestures etc, so there won't be any real extra drain on battery.

8 hours on the M8??? I usually have 4, or maximum 5 hours if I set the brightness at around 25-30%. I know it's offtopic but a few tips would be appreciated to boost battery life!

If you want help there, see post 1 and 4 and post the recommended screen shots. Lots of help there.
It's an N5 thread, but that's fine, just mention you have an M8.
I do everything from post 2. But my usage versus yours could be very different. So screen time will always vary. ?
My average screen time in Gsam at the bottom is well over 8 hours... 22total.

The smaller bezels make it harder for me to type, and even harder to hit the edges of the screen. I use a case to protect my device. I don't drop my phone or anything, but there's always a chance of it sliding out my jacket pocket. The edges of the display are no man's land.
Is anyone else sick of the bad press this phone is getting for fingerprint sensor ? Many site saying the phone has a major flaw and buyers beware. Granted it's not the best but I personally do not use the sensor and with 3 other options to unlock the phone i think it's a moutain out of mole hill issue.
Maybe this is a big issue to security minded people?
You said yourself it's not an issue because you don't use it. The fingerprint sensor is in an absolutely awful place. This is the first phone in the past several years I won't be able to use it, and will have to use another method. I setup face recognition, but I'm sure it's going to have issues in dark rooms, plus it can be fooled by a photo of yourself.

Yes heard it is no where near as fast to use iris or facial recognition. Samsung obviously things an earlier release is more important than sensor placement as we know this was a last minute hash job just hope it does not ditract to much from what promises to be the best phone of the year

Agreed. While I would have preferred it to be in the center like the Pixel or V20, finding it with a case on your phone is extremely easy. I'm sure I won't even think about it in couple weeks.

The finger print scanner works great for my right hand. I can easily find it and use it.
MY left hand wants to go to the heartbeat sensor. It will take some getting use to, but its not unusable.
True it would of been better if it was in the middle center by itself but hahh it doesnt break the phone for me.

it always good to have finger print sensor on front. i always use the sensor for samsung pay. you may need to look backside and front side for authenticating a transaction.

I use it without fail. The position on the back is not a problem for me. I prefer it on the back.
While not ideal, the fingerprint placement isn't a huge issue for me. As once i got my case i can honestly find it easily and not worry so much of smudging the camera.
I use my phones on the desk, table, and so on and the back sensor is an extra step for me, doesn't matter where it is or how well it works. Neither is facial or iris a work around because you have to pick up the phone. I've read many comment that after a time you become accustomed to rear scanners, might even like it better. Didn't happen with me, I've gone through a couple and I like them less and less the more I used them. While there is no perfect placement for every situation there is a reason why Apple and Samsung are trying to get the scanner under the screen, it's the placement that has the most strengths and fewest weaknesses. I'm a Note man anyways and as reports seem to indicate that we have hope Samsung will get the scanner they failed to get under this screen under that one it's a no brainer for me. My current phone is only a few months old and I picked up an LG watch sport the other day to get my toy need in check for a while. Assuming the international Note 8 can be rooted it will be my next phone.

Love my S8+.. however I think the biggest problem for me with the device is to get it unlocked without doing something very specific.
The iris scanner works fine.. but it has rules as far as how face the phone and distance yourself from it.
Are you guys also experiencing what I am as far as not being able to quickly unlock your phones from any casual position?
and to top it all, OK Google detection doesn't seem to work!

I really don't understand the bad press, I much prefer the new location!?
Before with my S7Edge if I wanted to one hand scan i had to hold the phone like a diving board, teetering out of my hand insecurely.
However with the new placement on the rear, i can middle finger scan one handded much more secrely with phone gripped between pinky, ring finger and thumb.
And finding the placement of the scanner is actually very easy to find if you use a case (any case for that matter...)
I sencerly hope people who are complaining with the new placement arent still scanning try to scan their thumbs because...that would be ludicrous!!, [emoji15anyways +1 for actiually liking the new location, a defenite improvement in my eyes of the S7 Edge.

No, i like it. Most of the time i use face unlock or smart location unlock though.
I find it hard to hit. The LG V20 I had before with the scanner in the middle was not bad.
I've gone to using the iris scanner instead. It is working much better then the fingerprint scanner. Especially when you turn on the option to bypass the lock screen swipe.
You can unlock your phone using: face recognition, iris scan, voice recognition and you can have it unlock automatically when at certain location (home/office) or connected to BT in your car for example. Paranoid types can save critical files inside secure folder and leave the phone unlocked. In other words so many options, to avoid fingerprint altogether, if you dislike it. Personally I don't care, may be actually easier to use it on the back, than front, especially when used one handed, but I have larger hands and bought smaller S8, it may be different for people with smaller hands on S8+
I do miss the fingerprint scanner on the front. When at work it is much more discrete and less obvious to unlock and tap to read a message/email/txt etc when my phone is laying on a desk in front of me.
Iris Scanner: Great indoors and if holding phone in hand. Worthless outdoors and if phone is laying on table/desk.
Fingerprint Scanner: Awkward all around. Placement, shape, proximity to camera etc. This is my only real gripe. It isn't that the S8 fingerprint reader is terrible, it is that the iPhone one was *very* good and placed ideally.
Face Unlock: Faster and easier than the iris scanner , but same drawbacks and less secure.
PIN: Ye' Ole Faithful. Still works just fine
As a v20 user I find the back placement superior to front placement phones. Its more natural and you can get a better grip on the phone when doing it instead of risking dropping the phone.
Putting the camera so close to the sensor was a pretty poor decision I don't know how that made it into the final product.

Wanted to be OK with it, but it's a PITA to be honest... And the recent update seems to have broken face unlock (probably works 1 time in 10). Iris scanning not that easy. I often have the phone on the desk to one side, and unlocking now means picking up the phone. Will have to investigate bluetooth pairing stuff, etc. Looking forward to sub-glass fingerprint reader (hopefully on Note 8)
Coming from a Nexus 6P I was used to it being on the back. On the nexus the placement was a bit better which made the access easier, but I like it nonetheless. I don't have my phone on the table a lot so no issues with picking it up like some other people do.
Yes. I wear glasses with a -15+ prescription, so the iris scanner is a complete non-starter for me. It won't even recognize my eyes through my glasses, and without my glasses I can't see the phone clearly enough to position my eyes for the scanner. The facial recognition is both not especially reliable and not all that secure, really. So, I'm stuck still using the fingerprint.
And having it on the back is a pain in the backside -- or on the backside, as the case may be. Even using smart unlock and trusted location, it's still a pain to have to reach across the phone and case when I'm trying to unlock the phone. The fingerprint sensor also seems to be considerably more finicky as to finger position than the S7's for some reason -- which is a bigger issue when I'm having to reach to unlock it from such an odd angle.
I honestly don't mind the position of the fingerprint scanner on the S8 - it's part of the reason I got the regular size instead of the plus. What I *do* mind is that it's a vertical rectangle - like, Samsung, nobody has fingers that can hit that when holding the phone like a normal person. If it was an oval shape I wouldn't mind half as much.
I've had to get a little used to its location over the past few days, but I find that my index finger tends to rest very close to it when I'm holding the phone, very easy to get to. I was used to using a finger on the back from the LG G4's power/volume controls on the back. I do find that it sometimes takes a little time, if you misjudge the distance and don't cover the entire sensor.
I've got a case on my S8 and it makes it easy to find the sensor. The fingerprint sensor was one of the (minor) things that made me get the S8 over the + because I figured the larger phone the sensor would be harder to reach. When I pick up the phone now I have my thumb near the power button and my index finger right over the fingerprint sensor. After I tap the sensor I just curl my finger so it supporting the phone from right under the sensor/camera. I probably have about a 75% first tap unlock rate.
I've never used a phone with a good front fingerprint sensor though, (only the note 4 with it's unreliable swipe sensor,) so I don't have much to compare to.

OnePlus 3T front fingerprint sensor is like the Note 5's but 1000 times better. No stupid clicking/moving button. It works instantly with the screen off or on. It works no matter what angle you use to touch it. It can be remapped to do many different things. It works first time everytime for unlocking the phone and unlocking apps.
When I first picked up the s8 I didn't think FP scanner was a good location. After 5 minutes using I feel like it's perfect. Mine also unlocks with the slightest finger touch and instantly. My note 5 was awkward at best unless laying on a desk. I do understand what you're saying about it laying on it's back. But I never hit the camera and it's snappy. I give it a 10

Honestly I think it was just for symmetry. To me there isn't any other logical reasoning (unless it's tied to the other electronics located there like the cam and heart rate sensor)
