Hi
I want to root my phone and I will follow the steps in this video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8ji0yjf7IY
Will rooting my phone means that my data will be wiped ?
No. Not unless you do some sort of wipe in your custom recovery.

Hi
I recently got a Nexus 4 after always having had iPhone, so I am quite new to this. =)
Is it possible to root a Nexus 4 without losing the data folder? Either by simply never deleting it or is there any way to get a backup of everything in the data folder(including hidden files and everything in /data/app, etc.) to my computer(windows or mac), when it isin't rooted?
All the rooting guides I have looked at until now says that they will wipe the phone, but I also read a discussion that said it were possible to gain complete access to the data folder by either manually rooting the phone or by not unlocking the bootloader? I posted somewhere else and someone there said that what I want is SU in the OS, but I am not sure about that, since I haven't heard more.
Thank you =)
You can root without wiping data. The trick is to not boot into Android after unlocking bootloader. You do things like this:
1. Setup your pc ( drivers, fastboot )
2. Unlock your bootloader
From now on, you must not boot normally, or else your phone will be wiped.
3. Flash a custom recovery.
4. Enter recovery
5. Wipe cache
6. Flash the SuperSu zip to root.
7. Reboot.
Now you should be rooted, and your data should not be wiped. But I'd make a backup is I were you.

Apologies if this question has already been asked, but is it possible to unroot a i9500 without losing data? I used CF root if it matters.
Saw this thread, but it involves a factory reset and will result in data loss.
The objective is to get the OTA updates as they roll out and then root again

flashing stock firmware with odin, dont wipe data.
but sometimes you need to wipe data if you stuck in a bootloop after flashing.
make backup before.

Ok thanks. Will this also reset the phone to "official" status?
I wish to move from stock b574 to sokkoban's.
My biggest concern is that in the description given, it requires wiping data. Given that I am already on marshmallow, is there really a need to wipe data in twrp? Won't cache/system wipe just do? I don't want to wipe my internal sd plus file structure/dates. Plus all my apps!
Call me lazy but am yet to find a backup system that will return all my files & apps as they were pre-flash.
Any ideas?

actually, huawei has pre-installed backup app.. and it works great... you can backup every app plus app's data too... but backing up all those may take time..

in teory no you dont need to wipe data ...
as you know sokkoban rom must be installed via twrp
so you can :
fisrt
install twrp
make nandroid backup
install sokkoban rom without wipe
if does not work you can try to
wipe and install sokkoban rom
recovery from your previus backup the data partition
Thanks guys. I can confirm you do not need to wipe data to use the custom rom. A simple dalvik & cache wipe did it.
Hello,
I have an S7Edge and looking to flash it. I am currently in Nougat 7.0 and would like to backup my data before proceeding with the root.
I have flashed the phone with TWRP but when following this tutorial: https://forum.xda-developers.com/s7...overy-official-twrp-hero2lte-3-0-0-0-t3334084
People say that you have to format the Data Partition in order to proceed with the installation of SuperSu and NO Dm verity.
Is there a way to backup my phone data [w or w/o TWRP] before ROOTING my phone with TWRP (format data partition to decrypt, install no dm verity and install super su)? This is so after my phone is rooted, I can restore all the apps, pictures, etc.
Thank you for the help! :fingers-crossed:

Hi,
Thank your forwarding me to your thread. I think I figured out a way to fully back it up with the following steps:
1) If you are in Nougat, downgrade to 6.0.1
2) Root your phone by flashing CF-Auto-Root in Odin (it should not wipe any data)
3) Once phone is rooted, you can backup your phone with TitaniumBackup or Flashfire
4) Save the backup in your sd or other external
5) Update phone with official or custom Nougat FW
6) Root phone via custom recovery (TWRP), will have to format all your data
7) One phone fully booted up and rooted, restore from backup with TitaniumBackup or Flashfire
Let me know how it goes
Is it currently possible to root the S8 without wiping data? Installing TWRP obviously requires a wipe but I dont remember having to wipe data while using CF Auto root on my S7. Can anyone confirm whether or not this is possible?
