Looking to replace my stock head unit with an android. Currently have a 13" 1080p dropdown screen in the back for the kids. On vacation, I hook up a roku for video. Its not ideal, in that you have to reach your head in the back to see the screen, and control the menu.
I'd like to be able to control the video through the head unit. Unfortunately, every option I see has a RCA out for video. It would work, but it bothers me running RCA to a 1080p display. Do I have any other options?

Did you catch the part of, "Unfortunately, every option I see has a RCA out for video. It would work, but it bothers me running RCA to a 1080p display. "?
In that case I wkuld think the best solution would be for a pi3 running Kodi to be connected to your screen and to install a Kodi-remote app on your headunit to control the pi.

How much you paid for it, cause i believe th cheapest for these is about 15£, as mentioned in another thread.
I read the charger is needed to keep the battery full, as current tv usb ports are un-powered, but new powered usb tv`s are on the way that do.
I have a crazy idea .. Does anybody know if i plug hdmi out from my phone to my onkyo amp the sound on video playback will be 5.1? Or even play music will this work on the subwoofer unlike using 3.5mm jack. Thanks
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
I did some testing with my newly acquired Samsung MHL adapter.
Here are some things i noticed:
Power:
You indeed need to have it plugged in, but you can use a normal computer USB cable to power it. Mind you, that the phone seems to use extra power when running with the adapter, getting more hot. Having it plugged into my PC, i noticed the power drain was high enough that the battery would actually (very) slowly discharge, if i was actively using the phone.
Resolution:
When sitting at the home screen, or any other screen excluding video playback, the picture will be a mirror of the phone. Output is 1080i but the picture is just the 800x480 picture upscaled. This means that you can't really use it to browse webpages in full resolution, and so forth. When doing movie playback, the movie will display in full resolution over hdmi.
Overhead controls will not show on the hdmi output. I've seen this mode active in the standard movie player, and in the youtube player so far. I can test any other apps if i requested. I'm guessing that when the hardware video decoder kicks in, it outputs directly to hdmi.
Unfortunately this also means that when using the gallery to display pictures/video on your TV, video recording will actually display in higher resolution then your pictures! Pictures are just displayed in standard upscaled 800x480, while video displays in full 1920x1080.
Sound:
When in mirror/upscale mode, sound is also "mirrored" to the TV, meaning you can use the phone as a music player or whatever to your stereo. I don't know if it does 5.1 when in video mode, as i only have 2.1 speakers, but i assume that it would.
I noticed one exception to this, which is the FM radio, which sadly only outputs to either headphones, or phone speaker. No option to play it over hdmi.
Let me know if there are any specific things you'd like me to test in regards to this.
I have recently tried to use the tv out on my Archos 101 and when I attach the hdmi cable the view on the 55" tv is huge. Doesn't show my Archos desktop only about 1/3 of it because of the size. That is problem 1, the 2nd is when I play a movie that I have downloaded on the Archos the sound is great, however, when I plug into tv the sound goes away. Any idea on the 2 problems?

Sounds like a problem with the cinema setting or something on the TV. I've got a 40-something inch Flat Panel, and an 80" projection, both work perfectly. It only outputs 1024x600, so it's not high-def or anything, but still good enough for me.

I checked all the settings on TV and looks good. No idea why the sound doesn't play. I will continue to test.

I did some troubleshooting this weekend and when I went into the tv setting menu and changed the setup to GAME the sound was there.
When I connect Micro HDMI to HDMI cable to my Monitor, it works in 720p mode. How to use 1080p i.e FullHD mode. My monitor is 1080p.
..... ..... .....
Also there is no option to increase/decrease vol, the volume just stays at 100%. Can't even access the sound/volume adjustments from settings app.
Is it possible t use tn7's speakers instead of monitor's speakers. How to enable TN7's speakers when connected via HDMI? ( My monitor's speakers are bad. )
... ... ...
I also want to try a USB hub with charging and pen-drive/Game controller/ connected at the same time. Is this possible that simultaneously it will charge also?
..... ..... .....
Well, to answer about 1080p, it will only output at 1080p if you are playing a 1080p video; there is no way to change the resolution for things like games, etc.
Second, I believe it only outputs audio through HDMI when that is hooked up; it cuts off the built-in speakers the same way plugging in headphones does.
As for a USB hub, I'll leave that to someone else since I've never tried it myself. Hope that helped!

Thanks rchrdcrg. I played some 1080p videos and it filled my entire monitor screen. Web browsing/riptide gp2 was still in 720p as you said.
My Mad Catz MOJO console has an issue: When set to 1080p, the screen image is a little too zoomed in. Obscuring the edges and losing part of the picture. I've tried messing around with Tv controls and thought maybe my Tv was interpeting the signal wrong. Nope, even when setting the picture to "normal" which results in a tiny box in the center, the edges are still obscured.
So i get the idea to try setting it to 720P instead.... image looks great and fits my screen perfectly. However, now there is no sound whatever! I've tried plugging in headphones into the headphone jack to check that as well, and there is sound. However, none outputted through the Tv. I have the latest firmware by the way, and even tried downgrading to an earlier one. Same issue for both.
Lastly, i tried using different HDMI ports. All (3) ports on my HD-TV had the same result.
I've managed to make a bearable fix by downloading a screen settings app that lets me change the resolution but, it could be better. The screen height is perfect but, i lose some width on the sides. At least i can see the full image now.
My question is: Does your MOJO also refuse to output sound at 720p? Is my unit defective?
I'd like to know so i can try exchanging it to amazon for another one.
Just tried it out, sound works flawless in 720p Mode.
Hello I have an s8 atoto head unit. I downloaded sling tv app on it and for some reason I cant get it to play any video. Not even any sound. I see the timer of yhe video on the bottom going as if its playing. But i get nothing but a black screen.
Netflix works. Locast works. Youtube works.
So I figured its sling itself? But I hooked up my phone to mirror to it and try sling. Same thing! Nothing shows up on the headunit. My phone played fine but nothing on head unit.
Any ideas? Thanks
