<SOLVED>
Hello XDA forums,
Before I rooted my Nook Simple Touch with Glowlight, I had no problem sideloading books onto the SD card and opening them from the native Nook Library app. However, after rooting (with which everything seemed to go fine), the following behaviors happen:
I can see sideloaded epub files in the Nook Library on the SD card /My Files/Books directory, but
when I try to open any of them, I get an error that says, "This Nook, cannot read this file. It maybe an unsupported format", however,
if I go through the ReLaunch file manager, it opens fine in the native Reader app, and
if I sideload the same file by usb to the Nook's main memory, it will open fine from the Library, but
if I copy/paste the file from the SD card to the main memory via the ReLaunch file manager, I get the error message.
Puzzling... any thoughts?
Thanks,

I am not familiar with Relaunch so was unable to check that angle. I did discover, to my surprise, that neither epubs nor mobis will open in the appropriate app from ES File Explorer! Jpegs and such do, but not those e-book files. So that was weird. I never would open them that way, but it's still unexpected. The " activity picker", or whatever it's called, can be really squirrely. I don't remember where the file is located any more but I once went to investigate it and found multiple instances of file associations, none of which worked...
Does the problem persist through a reboot? Do the epubs that refuse to open from the Library file manager have the little "n" in the lower right corner?

Thanks for the response. Yeah, the problem persists through reboot and indeed those epubs that refuse to open from the Library have the little n like they should. They just do not open

Mmm... I'm sure you've tried this, but what happens if you transfer an epub via USB to the internal storage [file opens correctly in Reader from Library] and then cut/paste it to storage on the SD card? I know that's a pain and should not be needed, but I'm curious.
The only other idea I have is to try a different File Manager and see if transfers via that app give the same results (to test if this is a Relaunch issue, although I'm sure people would be going on about it if it were). I move files around all the time with my old version of ES File Explorer and never see any issues, but then I don't have issues copying to the SD card via USB either.
Mmm...maybe one other idea. I sometimes use Wi-Fi File Transfer to move epubs from my PC to the NST. It's a very simple app with a browser interface (on your PC). I've never experienced any issues with moving files that way--also saves wear and tear on the USB jack. If that gives epub transfers that are unreadable then the issue is deeper than the method of transfer.

Thanks again. I will noodle on those ideas and let you know what was the outcome.
Sooo... I never figured it out and just lived with it. However, this week (a year later), I had to update the Nook STG because there was a mandatory transport layer security update that made it unable to access the B&N store via the Nook without updating. The update wouldn't install on the rooted nook, so I returned the device to factory default then installed the update. I wasn't using any of the rooted capability anyway, other than to open books from the SD card. After successfully installing the update, the nook still would not open books from the SD card in the native nook library. Since, it appeared that the problem had nothing to do with the prior rooting, I figured it might have something to do with the SD card itself. I unmounted and reformatted the SD card via the Nook's built in utility, then reloaded my books. Viola!! The Nook recognizes and opens the books from the SD card now. It was apparently an incompatible card format or something... So, SOLVED.

Hi at all,
everytime I put files on the sd card, I have to reboot Android because without ES File Explorer won't show the new files I put on the memory card.
Even "Refresh" in ES File Explorer doesn't helo. Is there any other way?
Thanks!

This is a well documented problem. I think it's to do with the way that android sees the SD card with booting from it but don't quote me on that. As far as I know, the best ways round it are:
1. Use dropbox. Free 2gb account and can be very useful.
2. FTP. This is my personal favourite. SwiFTP is a free FTP server for android and there are many free ftp clients for PC/Mac/Linux available. I use FileZilla (opensource ftp client).
3. I believe that if you unmount your SD card before copying files over, then remount however I don't find it particularly successful.
There are other ways like shared folders, email files etc but the top 2 above are the best for me. I use dropbox for small files and one-offs or if I'm copying a lot of stuff and don't want to reboot to winmo, then FTP.
It's also worth noting that if you are a windows user then winamp can sync music over wifi providing you install the winamp android client. However both winamp for windows and android are free.
Hope this helps..
enjoy
Ok, thank you. But that's bad.
The problem is not only that I want to put files through USB on it, it happens also when I use CurrentWidget for example that wants to create a log file on the sd card. Hmm...
I use MDJ Froyo HD 4.6, and there are practically no problems when using mass storage option... After unplugging the files are on the SD card... Only sometimes have to reboot, but not very often...
Why so complicated? Use "Multi Mount SD Card" (it´s free) to connect to PC and you will see new files without rebooting.

If you're now saying that applications are unable to create files on the SD then there is something wrong with your card. I'd recommend copying everything off it and reformatting it (use disk management to format it, and use the largest cluster size available).
Some builds suffer from this problem and some don't.
Im using HD2ONE 0.3.6 and it's working fine. File explorer detects the new files after transferring via USB Cable
I love this build paired up with the CM6.1.1 Gingerbread Theme

I've heard many people complain about not being able to see files after copying them across, but I've never heard anyone say that an app could not make a file on the sd card.
I am having the same exact problem. I was transferring files from this PC to my phone and everything was going fine (it refreshes right away after disconnect) then suddenly, my SD Card got corrupted and I was forced to reformat. I used the same ROM (Darkstone's SUPERAM FROYO) and after that, it won't sync anymore. I even tried removing it and using the HD2ONE (mentioned above) ROM and it was the same. I went home, copied everything from my SD backup from the other PC and same symptoms.
I thought I was missing a sync app or something but no. I looked into each of the folders I copied and most of them are blank.
I hope someone can save us!
I find it easiest and safest to just use ES Explorer to access the network shares and copy files wirelessly. The way our data.img is mounted, giving the pc full access to the sdcard is just not a good move. There was good reason when you connected to windows' sync software it disables your phone from accessing the card.
Even though the hd2one build seems to handle it correctly I almost never do it anymore unless it's for big files. It saves the wear and tear on the usb port anyway.
I had that "problem" too, but for me it was easy to solve. Here is the whole procedure:
So, i want some files to put on my sdcard, i plug in the usb cable and select the option "use as a storage", dont check the "use allways" or "dont ask again" (or whatever this is called on your machine). Now the computer "see" the phone and i put my files on it. In this moment i cant browse the sdcard on my hd2, because its reserved for windows now, (thats why currentwidget cant write onto it, same if you have a wallpaper in some "wallpaper" folder on sd).
Now, when i am done, usually i unplug the usb cable for some seconds and then i plug it in again and choose the option "charge only" and the sdcard gets mounted in android like it should and all my new imported files are visible.
Its the same on WinMo, if you choose there the "HDD" option, you cant browse the sdcard on the mobile. Only if you choose "use active sync"(slower) you are able to browse the sdcard.
cheers
ps: the quickest way for me now is to use wifi and shared folders
I had it at one time but because I'm an Android newbie, I have no idea where to look.
Using Astro or ES.

It's ok, we all start somewhere right?
Load up astro hit home then up and your usb storage device is whatever is in usb_storage. Remember to give it a few secs to detect it and prepare the drive.
Your SD card (internal) is sdcard and your microsd is external_sd.
GL.
Hope this helps.

Excellent! Thanks.
Is it possible to access the micro SD card through a computer? When exploring the acer drive after plugging it in you can see all the stuff on the internal memory but can't get to the external_sdcard folder.
at the moment i dont think this is possible but give it a few days and it might be a possibility.

You can purchase (I think it was a whole $1.50) an app called WiFi File Explorer. It sets your tablet with its own IP address from whatever source you are using for WiFi. Then you access your SD Card by entering in the IP address line in your browser. The app will give you the exact address line to enter into your browser.
Its like a virtual FTS server actually. Works like a charm. If you are worried about security, you can require a password.
Accessing external sd and usb drives
It is possible to access the SD and USB drives using a file manager such as Astro or Estrongs. The drives can be found in the main directory under subdirectory /mnt.
Hope this helps. I had the same problem at first.

According to Acer, that isn't possible right now. Not that I'm inclined to believe them, but the manual is pretty thorough and I decided to go through every page and it clearly states "Transferring files from a microSD card to your PC.
Remove the card from the tablet and use a card reader or USB adapter to access the card as an external storage device."
I'm REALLY hoping they address this in an update. I thought it was a Honeycomb limitation due to the Xoom but Asus has addressed it by looping it as a folder in the internal storage so I mean, Acer and Xoom should be able to do that as well. Unless there are unforeseen problems with doing that? /shrug.
USB and a camera
Thanks for starting this thread! I'm also a newb and I have Astro and ES installed (now).
I am trying to read images from my camera (Nikon D3). When I attach the USB and turn on the camera the A500 says scanning for media. But none shows up in the photo browser (I'm sure I need a better viewer and suggestions are welcome!). When using ES or Astro and navigating to the usb_storage directory it shows as empty.
For background, the D3 holds 2 CF cards with the 2nd typically used as overflow and both are 8GB. Each card normally just has a DCIM directory with photos in one or more directories below that.
Once I connected up the A500, on one of the cards 2 additional directories were created (the one without any images currently) called .android_secure and LOST.DIR. I can't see any of these directories on the A500 or any of the images (all .jpg). I plugged into my laptop for this info.
I am trying not to have to carry my laptop anymore so any suggestions, ideas or research resources would be appreciated.
I've run into a HUGE issue. I wonder if anyone else has experienced this.
The files on my USB flash drives begins to get erased/deleted if it is still connected to the tablet when the device is activated from hibernation mode. I don't know if the file explorer apps are causing this bug. I've used Linda File Manager and Astro and 3 different USB drives to test this. I've even restored my tablet to factory settings.
Hello,
I have also problems navigating the usb drive. As mentioned above I found the dir but it shows (Directory empty).Im using a 8gb transcend flash drive. On 128mb flash drive there is no problem viewing and accesing the files.Any other have the same problem or solution?
I change the file system from NTFS to FAT32 and it works now(such a stupid user Ive become)
As the title says. I've put the microsd card of my htc g2/z in the iconia and its working. Though i cant seem to find it anywhere in my file managers. (Music app shows ext. Sd content) tried es and file manager for honeycomb. I want to transfer music and video's over to internal sd. Since acer does not have usb drivers for mac, this is kind off my only option. Right?
SOLVED:
1.
Micro SD card slot shows up under: /mnt/external_SD.
So in your file explorer you have to go to root, and then mnt.
2. There are no mac drivers for the acer A500. You can try http://www.android.com/filetransfer/
Though, that program seems to crash alot!
3.
Transfer your files from mac to A500 using USB sticks, SD cards, FTP servers (loads in market).
USB stick can be found: mnt/external_USB

I will check it out. Thanks alot!
**edit**
Android file transfer keeps crashing as soon as i connect the tab. Tried reboot, but still crashing.
Any other solutions? I've tried FTP and such apps. They work, but ofcourse not as fast as usb connection.
and why is my micro sd card not showing in file explorers?
if you're using es strogs file manager than you first need to go to root (click on the left most icon on top) than go to /mnt than /external_sd <-- that's your micro sd card than simply copy and paste your files from there to your internal storage.

Thanks. This makes copying my music alot easier.
Dual File Manager works too. When you start it, just hit the Android back button and you'll see "external_sd"
Sucks that it doesn't mount on my PC though.

I use Winamp on the desktop and the A500. It syncs music from my desktop machine to my tablet automatically whenever my tablet connects to my home wifi.
just put the card in and power down/on the device.
as mentioned, power down fully, not just On/off until the screen blanks. Found out the hard way, lazy person that I am.
Odd thing I've found though is that when connecting my Acer tab to my Acer .... err ... laptop ... feels so incestuous .... is that the mSD card appears as simply "SDCARD" while it's external_SD from the device itself. Ah the sweet smell of O/S kludges in the morning

No need to power off > back on. Just put the sd card in and voila! It worked right away. Just could not find the sd card in ES file. But now I know it's under mnt/external_SD/
actually I wouldn't call it solved, its kind of an annoyance if anything else. Titanium Backup for one won't see it, I thought honeycomb was going to mnt internal as essc (or something like that) and the external sd as sdcard?
You can soft link it (now that we have root) but that won't carry across a reboot for now.
any how still loving this thing!
I finally got the Manual Nooter 4.5.6 going, and all the apps and everything works great, love it!
My only reason for rooting however, I cannot seem to find an answer to.
I want to move files that I download from the web, into the /my files/books section and have them show up in the library.
I am able to sideload through calibre, no problem, and they show up.
However if I download through Aldiko and move the files over, it won't show up. I don't see what the difference is.
Any help would be great!
Are you sure that you are placing the files in the correct place after downloading them with Aldiko? They have to be in the main memory to see in the library not the SD card. I will wager that Aldiko is downloading them to the SD card which also has a /My Files/Books folder
Yes. I think so. The path to the books is:
/media/my files/books Aldiko does put them on the SD card and Im moving the folder.
Does the my files folder need to be up a level? Thats where Calibre puts them by default. And they are seen fine.
The library will read from /My Files/Books on either internal memory (/media) or the sdcard (/sdcard).
How are you moving stuff? If I put anything in either of those two, the library sees them. Have you done a refresh in the library?
I'm using Astro file manager to move them from the SD card to the internal storage.
I then do refresh the library, and nothing.
I can put a folder, or just an epub, and still nothing. I'm not getting something...if Calibre can do it and the library can see it, the theoretically I "should" be able to just drop one in there.
This is my first Nook Color-> android flash. I'm having trouble loading my books back onto my Nook.
I followed a how to from android forums, setting up a 2GB uSD card to install CM7.1 using CWR:
I downloaded the rom from CM: update-cm-7.1.0-encore-signed.zip
(I cannot share the link since i just joined, but if you google: "nook color cm7 storage" and click the first link, that's the process I followed)
Installation went fine, I also added the google apps package, and can finally download apps from the general android market rather than the B&N market. I downloaded the nook app so I can load my books back on (mostly epub format). The problem is that when I run the Nook app, it says I have no SD card inserted. This is true, but I didn't need one to load books into my additional storage on the Stock Nook rom. I also have lost the USB storage mode ability I had on the stock rom.
If I go to Settings->Storage I have the following partitions:
1)Internal storage: 0.792/0.92GB
2)Additional Storage: 4.82/5.00GB
this is the /mnt/emmc drive
3)Additional Storage: unavailable
this is the /mnt/usbdisk
Again, all I'm looking to do is load books into my internal storage like I had with the original Nook Rom, and I'd like to be able to drag and drop them from my computer via USB. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
If it's too complicated I may go back to the stock rom, I just wanted the option of using a better web browser and having access to more apps with full android.
on a side note, in win XP file explorer, I see two drives when my nook is connected to USB, but neither has any data, and simply tells me to insert a drive/card when I click on them
Problem Solved
I messed around a bit and finally got things working. I wasn't getting USB mode, because you need to open the tray and click on USB Connected, then you get the "Turn on USB storage" dialogue. Yes, I'm a CM7 newbie. My stock nook, and stock Nexus One do not require this step. I also went into settings->CyanogenMod->Applications and checked the "Use internal storage" box, which switches your internal and SD card names in the system (requires a reboot). I'm not sure if this last step is necessary.
As for sideloading books to read, you have to figure out where your reader app wants to have them located on your device. For the Nook app, you put them in the "Nook/MyDocuments" folder. It could not find my ePub books unless I put them there. Then they still don't show up at the normal library page, I have to go to "My Files" in the drop down menu. On a side note, I'm liking the Nook app, which has page turn animations (the stock nook reader app does not). When you enter your B&N account, it should automatically sync books you have purchased.
Next thing to try is other reader software. I installed kindle and google books, but all my books are currently ePub. I'm going to try Blio and Aldiko next.
Hope this research helps someone else out moving from Nook Color as an ereader to Nook Color as an android tablet still used as a reader.
I wondered this myself and when I was having issues with the app I uninstalled it, changed the CM7 settings to install all apps internally as to the default of "auto", rebooted and reinstalled the app and then changed the settings back and rebooted. While that fixed my problem, the app still wanted a memory card installed. The reason is this is not a tablet app and it is looking for a card because most (or at least many) phones do not have enough internal memory. Since I used a card for backup, updates, etc this was not a big deal for men.
ive tried moving the book to the MyDocuments file and still am not finding the book i have downloaded.. it is in pdf file format so would this prob be the issue? ive selected the my files icon and it shows (0) files... not for sure what all im still doing wrong to get my book to read on the Nook app
Why aren't you using the setting to use your Emmc partition as your sdcard? It's an option to in CM7.
Sent from XDA Premium app CM7.1
Bmar08, I'm not sure if the nook app will read PDF files. You can use file manager to find your PDF files, then open them with your browser. I also started using the free Aldiko reader, which will read ePub and PDF files. It has a lot of nice options such as font size, brightness, background color, etc. so you may try that. Aldiko will also let you browse your directories to indicate which ones you want to include in your library!
