Not really sure when it happened (probably while I was playing around with different custom roms) but my phone managed to lose all private data as well as the ability to "see" what's installed on it.
I can't see my Baseband, Hardware or Software version, IMEI and even MSL is not working.
I can't perform ##RTN# or ##SCRTN# and if I switch to dm+adb+modem DFS doesn't want to connect to it (it doesn't see it on its port).
Also, phone is not recognized by the computer when it's booted but it is in the TWRP recovery.
If I try to ODIN a Lollipop STOCK rom it won't boot, but I can install a Lollipop that's TWRP compatible.
I do have a backup of the efs partition as well as m9kefs1-3 but restoring them didn't change anything.
I've even copied all the partitions from another Sprint S4 (including the system) and replaced them trough the terminal in TWRP but no luck.
I'm out of ideas.
Any help is appreciated.

Install stock tar in Odin. Boot to recovery then wipe internal SD and do a factory reset. That should allow it to boot.

Been there, done that. I can boot stock KitKat nut I can't boot stock Lollipop even with the factory reset. It just goes into a bootloop. Not sure that would change anything.
I can't explain how is it possible to replace the data on every partition from the working phone and still have a "broken" phone.
Is there any other memory on S4 that is not accessible?
From what I can see it seems that modem and system are not communicating - case in point, even if I put my phone in the airplane mode when I look at the battery consumption I can see that "cell standby" percent constantly increases. In the airplane mode this should be off, right?
Also, is there a way to see if the modem is functioning properly or it might be damaged?

I mean if you have service it's working, but other than that the only thing you can do is flash the stock tar. Putting it in airplane mode forces it into Cell Standby btw.

That's the whole point, I don't have service. I'm in Europe now, had my phone internationally unlocked, everything worked fine but now the system doesn't see the SIM card at all. It doesn't even report it as "Wrong SIM card" it just doesn't register it.
I've flashed a stock rom *NAE* and upgraded it (without a problem) trough OTA all the way to GPL1 (NAE-NG2-OD2-OH1-OK3-PI2-PL2) - six updates, problem stays the same. All the time I have the system as "Samsung Official", no suggestions what might be wrong.
And why, oh why, system doesn't want to accept my MSL when I try to do the ##RTN# or ##DATA# edit. I doesn't matter what number I put in, I still can't press OK. And ##MSL# "reacts" but does nothing.

Sounds like it might be a hardware problem then, if the software is completely stock that usually indicates it is hardware. Maybe your SIM reader or the SIM card itself is damaged.

Whatever it is, seems like the modem is dead (or there's no way to communicate with him).
I thought that AT commands might do but I can't reach it from the computer either. Tried DM+MODEM+ADB, RNIDS+DM+MODEM but it doesn't give me any reply. It is recognized in the Device Manager, but when I go to Properties\Diagnostics and then "Query Modem" I get - "The modem failed to respond".
I've tried changing UART between PDA and CDMA (AP/CP) but there's no difference.
I've bought a new phone, can't go around without one, this is kind of a side project now to see what I can learn but it will probably be sold for parts (it's not worth fixing it). Shame.
If you guys have any additional ideas, let me know, now I can experiment all I want.
Cheers!

My phone some how fixed itself. I hope no one else has to experience what I did for the past few days.
I forgot to install the google apps while rooting to cm6. Now whenever I boot into clockwork, it says something like sd mount 10 seconds and I can't use it to install the google apps. This is my first time rooting.
EDIT: I just realized that I could use ROM Manager but when I choose gapps-mdpi-20101020-signed I get, "The application Superuser Permissions (process com...) stopped unexpectedly...
So, how can I fix this?
EDIT 2: I did this and got this:

EDIT 3: Now I have no service or 3G. I'm attempting unrevoked again...
It just did the same thing from my first post, rebooting in 10 seconds. Still no service
EDIT 4: I just accessed clockwork by volume down + power then recovery. I did a clean wipe, let's see what happens...
EDIT 5: It booted up, went to set up google account (it did not ask this before) but no service still. Also, the market is there.
EDIT 6: I found out that the SIM is locked but I do not know the code. Help?? I'm pretty sure that I never had a sim pin because I was able to access the network before.
EDIT 7: Went back to stock backup, says no sim card in phone
EDIT 8: So I left my phone off for the past few days but I look at it today and it's on and has service!!! Idk what happened, but I'm not complaining! I just don't have any contacts >_>

How exactly are you getting into clockwork? Do you have your phone plugged into your computer during this process?
Edit: IRT your edit, I haven't experienced that and you may want to wait for someone who knows the answer but I would reflash the rom after a wipe data, cache, & dalvik...

You can't have your phone plugged into USB while you are [initially] accessing clockwork. As for your sim issue, did you have the SIM card lock enabled prior to flashing cm6? i.e. "Require PIN to use phone".
If you did then that's your issue most likely, and if you didn't...gee i dunno to be honest. I can remember with older phones if the SIM card got locked I'd have to call up AT&T and get the PUK code or something of the such...i dunno if that applies here or not...does it give you an option to UNLOCK the card when it informs you that it is locked?

Yeah, it says Lock SIM card and the box is checked. I uncheck it then a keyboard pop up. I do not know the code so it says :Unable to change SIM lock state, possibly wrong pin
Once I get a hold of my sister's phone, I'll put my SIM in it and see if I could call ATT to reset the PUK and PIN
Question, how do you restore to stock?
maybe you can try RUU and restore to unrooted state, if the sim card still not work it's the sim card problem.

What's RUU? And I've tried unrooted, stock and it says please insert sim.
I've concluded either of these happened:
1. I accidently put on sim verification somehow
2. I've rooted it too many times in a row and my phone blocked my sim because it thinks I'm using it for T-Mobile, etc.
Hi guys,
I think I was messing around where I shouldn't have been and now I have 2 SIMs from 2 different providers down on my unlocked rooted W8. I had moved it back to XtreStoLite successfully and then for some reason I started exploring service codes and I think thats where I killed it. I've completely formatted both drives and reinstalled factory but I'm still getting the same result. The Bell SIM just says Emergency Calls only and then you go into the networking area and it says Insert SIM for network services. The Koodo SIM gets a totally different result as its getting the PUK-locked.
Any wonderful ideas?
Thanks a million.
Tony
Estrongs and CSC folder attached in zip format
Does anyone have any ideas on this? I got the PUK-Unlocked taken care of on one SIM only to end up with the same problems on both SIMs. The SIMs still show as unlocked as per CSC but the status is LIMITED.
I think what I need to do is blow away the CSC so any remaining tainted records are gone.... somehow without breaking the unlock. I guess this doesn't get wiped even when I'm in PHILS and highlighting and formatting everything and then reinstalling factory firmware from SAMMOBILE. I've tried updating Bootloader, Modem and then firmwares several times. I've been to the shop that unlocked my phone and they say well if its not asking for a code its still unlocked. I've talked to the PUK detective at Koodo. I've been to the Bell store only to be sent out the door in a rude manner.
I think what I need to do is reset part of the service code that contains SIM stuff.
Any guru can help me PLEASE???
Below is more descriptive info with screenshots of the issue and my troubleshooting.
Thanks,
Tony

Not sure why did you attached the Estrongs folder?
Did you try to flash stock firmware? Are your IMEI and baseband still valid?
And please check the following:
open Dialer, enter *#0011#, Menu, Back item, Menu, Key Input, enter Q0 and OK, wait for some seconds until you get MAIN MENU. Then select DEBUG SCREEN > NAS INFORMATION > MM INFORMATION > capture this screenshot. And then Menu, Back item, MM REJECT CAUSE and also capture screenshot.
Can you show these 2 screenshots?

Hi vndnguyen,
My IMEI LOOKS ok and my baseband does too but I'm just look at the About Phone>Status .
I'm not sure why I put the estrongs folder in there. Sorry, I was up for many hours straight trying to fix this. I used your Samsung Info folder to try many different codes with no luck. In this situation, you get the no sim error when you try to put a service code in the dialer so its necessary to root the phone and launch them your app. It seeps for whatever reason that the SIM is deregistered and almost not seen at all. One SIM I can get a little bit further than the other. I have tried restoring two different firmwares from Sammobile and also one with Kies, but NO LUCK.
I really hope you can help. I'll be so grateful. Even the provider wasn't helpful.
Thanks very much for your assistance.

According to the screenshots, the problem was that the network consider your phone as a illegal device. The network refuses service either because an ID of your device is not acceptable, or because the device does not pass the authentication check.
So please check:
1- Put your SIM card into another phone to make sure it works fine?
2- Make sure your phone's IMEI is not blacklisted?

Thank you. This is very confusing as I got my S5 as new. I spent another 40 minutes with Bell on the phone tonight and they certainly didn't mention anything of the sort. I'll try these and then get back to you.
Thanks!

Well I've tried reinstalling stock and complying with Knox with no luck. I've tried completely blowing away everything to do with Knox after wiping EVERYTHING and reinstalling appropriate boatloads, kernel, modem.
I'm at Bell now. Gonna ask why the hell I've talked to 3 CRTs on the phone and in another store and Knox WASNT EVEN MENTIONED!

If your warrenty is void (knox tripped), you could risk it and try to add all bands to your phone. Maybe it could reset something?

I got the phone replaced through my smartphone insurance package. Luckily I don't have to pay the normal 150 deductible because my S5 was an insurance replacement and within its warranty. As far as the 0x1 causing warranty to be void, I highly doubt that crap will stand up in court. Because you install a custom recovery to BACKUP your phone for recovery, your warranty is void? That's a loud of sh*t! I think that all of us Samsung customers should put together a petition letter expressing our displeasure with Knox. I mean, it doesn't really do anything for us unless you're with a corporation or you pay for one of the upgraded copies. I can't even figure out how to login to Knox on my insurance replacement but it's there and running.... well it was. lol
I'd really like to find out what happened to this phone before I send it back. I think I might try adding the bands.
Anyone else have any ideas as how to reset the Qualcomms through the service menu. I suspect that this is totally separate from Android and that in here is where I messed something up that tripped up the modem settings so it won't read SIM cards. I want to reset the Qualcomm back to factory defaults.
my galaxy s4 is not picking up sim after i was coming back to stock rom kitkat via odin it was showing Nand error so i downloaded a PIT file from internet but after that sim is not showing up as like it was not the part of the phone here is the screen shot that explains it

This is usually a hardware issue, in that the SIM card tray has failed. It's an easy fix as I've had to do it myself. Is this phone unlocked, and did you purchase the unlock code or do it yourself?
I'm asking because the possibility exists that the phone's SIM lock may also have been reactivated. Your screenshots are identical to what I encountered with my S4. In my case I had to replace the SIM tray as well as remove the SIM lock.
No Man , it was unlocked by the company

it was unlocked i upgraded it to lollipop chinese version but it was not supporting the google play , so i installed kitkat but it was not allowing it as i did lollipop with the pit file included , so i downloaded file from internet named as adonis.pit and after that you know i root my device installed 3rd party roms and many other debugging tools but still no solution
You likely downloaded the wrong PIT file. There is one for the I9505 on the forums here. There should be one for the I9500 as well. Search the stickies, then try again with the correct PIT file.

This guy gives the worst advice, seriously... Trust me, dont listen to him. You don't have a problem with your sim slot and it also has nothing to do with a sim lock. You can clearly see in the screenshot that your baseband is unknown. That's your issue, and the reason your imei is null and the reason you have no service.
This could be caused from 3 things.
1 . modem firmware
2. corrupt efs folder
3. Hardware failure
If your phone was working prior to returning to stock, I would try flashing a modem using odin or custom recovery to see if baseband remains unknown. i9500 modem thread
I'm right more often than not. And for the record, based upon my personal experience with my S4, it is most likely a hardware problem. At least twice in this forum I've mentioned not only having a software issue that restoring firmware via Odin would not correct (the phone relocking itself), but the fact it would not recognize my SIM card until I had replaced the tray. Only when the tray was replaced was I able to properly diagnose and fix the problem.
You can disagree with my assessment, but you will do so in a respectful manner, capisce paisan?

If it was a hardware problem it would be IC related and have nothing to do with sim tray. The baseband is unknown. Without modem firmware your phone will not connect to anything or even recognize your SIM card.. Android 101. If I were to remove the sim tray from my s4, my baseband would still be there and my phone would say no sim because they have nothing to do with each other. IMEIs don't go null from faulty sim readers.
The sim lock has nothing to do with an unknown baseband unless the efs folder got corrupted which is unlikely if you didn't touch it.
If baseband is still unknown aftert reflashing a modem through custom recovery or Odin then you more than likelly used the wrong pit file and messed up the partition mapping on your phone. You might have some luck trying to flash again with the correct pit file or you might need to take it to your local jtagger
Hi, guys. I have a 1 year old I9505. It started loosing network coverage without any reason. It was originally with Touchwiz 5.0.1 when the problem started. I installed Cyanogenmod 13 (Android 6.0.1) to try if the problem is in the OS, everything working, but the problem continues.
I leave it on the table working (with coverage) and some time after that I turn the screen on and I see an "x" over the mobile network indicator and there is no network. Only restart solves the problem, but not every time. Sometimes i keep on restarting the phone in order to get network coverage. I miss phone calls.
I told myself, when restart solves the problem, maybe I can restart the mobile/radio service without restarting the phone. I installed some apps from the play store, which reset the network coverage. No success. When I have coverage, they do reset it and reconnect. But when the coverage is lost (with an ''x''), those apps do nothing!
How can I restart the SIM card module/service?
It is a hardware problem? But if it is, how does a restart sometimes help?
PS: if i toggle airplane mode (when I have the "x" thing), then i cannot turn the airplane mode back off!

OK, I'll try, but it worked 1 year with this firmware. Without any update, it started to make the problem. That's why I don't suspect the firmware it was with during this year.

I changed the SIM card with new original micro-SIM. I've installed the newest modem I've found (again). Still no difference.
There is a difference in the behavior when there is no SIM at all and when there is SIM inserted, but no network.
When it looses network coverage:

SIM card info app - screenshots:
With normal network coverage:
Lost coverage - SIM card status is "ОК", everything else - not available:
When I take out the SIM card - SIM not detected:
I see that when it looses network coverage, SIM card number is not seen in the app. So maybe it cannot read the SIM card. But SIM status is OK - maybe this is a flag when just SIM is inserted.

You have tried other modem now, did you flash also and try original firmware from your provider so not from xda? If not try that, if not ok try using other sim from friend or someone else other then yours, if that is working then you know something is wrong with your sim, if not i am out of option and it could be your sim reader.
good luck.
Nothing. New SIM, original firm, I even tried this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-att/general/how-to-fix-galaxy-s4-sim-card-removed-t3113480
still doesn't work. Powers up with network, wants my PIN code and a few minutes after that - gone.

Sorry to hear that nothing worked out for you, i am afraid that you have a hardware problem.
So I've had this phone for a few months but thanks to the mess with the US I wasn't able to get the Nougat update from ZTE's servers through the Gold's System Update. I later found a Nougat image on ZTE's support page, put it on an empty SD card and installed it from Settings>System Update. That went fine. I rebooted, did the setup, installed a few apps and everything seemed great until I tried to make a phone call. The display sits on 'Dialing...' for about 20 seconds with no ringing sound and then the call drops, followed by the signal bars going hollow and a message that I have left my Home network. After 10-20 seconds the signal meter returns to normal and I'm on my Home network again. Calling out aside, SMS works fine and 4G works fine.
Rebooting does nothing, re-seating the sim does nothing and factory resets do nothing. When I go to Phone>Settings>Call Settings>Carrier Settings>Additional Settings a pop-up says "Reading settings..." and then after about 20 seconds I get "Network or Sim card error" and the Data Roaming warning (mentioned above) appears in the Notifications bar. Just trying to get that information off of the card breaks my data connection. I called my carrier and they confirm my account is in order and everything is fine on their end. When I put the sim back into my old phone it works properly and I can make calls and browse, etc. Going to the same >Additional Settings on my old phone, it loads up without the "Network or Sim card error" message. This all seems like a very specific error, that trying to pull my connection or account information from the sim is breaking my connection and causing outgoing calls to crash. This never happened on the Gold under 6.0.1.
In case it's important, I have a 7 Mini Gold but the 7 Mini Gold page does not have an update image on it. I used the update image from the 7 Mini page. I figured the lack of an image on the Gold's support page was an oversight rather than the Gold being so different that it needs its own separate updates. I hope I didn't get that wrong.
Unless someone has some insight into fixing this as-is, right now I think I have to either rollback Nougat (except I haven't found an image of 6.0.1 yet) or install Lineage OS. I think I have all the files I need to flash Lineage, using Tulip from here and the directions found here and the image found here. All comments, even just speculation, are welcome.
What carrier are you on? Do you have the right APN settings? I've had similar on T-Mobile when I'm in a Band12\VoLTE market with a non-VOLTE device. I can get LTE data without issues but the device would not call out because it could not see an active voice network.

Freedom mobile (Canada).
APN settings match what is listed on their site.
Freedom doesn't appear to offer VoLTE. The problem happens whether VoLTE is switched on or off.
I have a similar problem with a UK model. It doesn't give me the roaming pop up but the rest of the symptoms are the same. Calls drop immediately and calling my number from another phone returns busy signal. The network type preference doesn't work as well. It stays on 4g/3g/2g auto no matter what I select. I think mine is like this because I tinkered with the service menu but I am not sure. On another thread someone suggested to erase modemst 1 and modemst2 partitions in fastboot mode but I can't make it connect in fastboot plus someone said that erase command is blocked. I'm looking for a stock firmware image to re-flash it but it's nowhere to be found...
UPDATE: I've managed to erase the modem partitions with twrp and adb shell but it didn't help. network type preference works now but the phone doesn't connect to the network at all.
After taking a long break from fighting with the Mini I dove back in today. I was able to back-up boot and recovery and then flash twrp recovery. After the phone was stuck on the blue ZTE logo when I tried to start it. I flashed the B12 noverity boot image and now it boots normally. SMS is still fine and calls still drop without connecting, briefly kicking the phone to roaming. While I nosed around in the settings again and compared them to my working phone I noticed something that I'd dismissed before. Under Available Networks everything has "null" beside it. "Null" doesn't show at all in that section when using the same SIM in my other phone.

I call this a clue. Why I try to Google it I get articles about troubleshooting null SIM cards. I also found this stackoverflow thread and this comment:
https://stackoverflow.com/questions...k-is-on-or-available-or-not-on-android-device
in none of the code above i see a check for whether getNetworkInfo() returned null, which happens according to the docs when the requested network type is not supported.

This is probably a different kind of null than the one in my screenshot, but it makes me wonder. Are there any apps on either F-droid or Play that people would recommend that might report what is happening when the phone tries to connect to a tower to make a call?

This index has what looks like B2017G-EU images. Can you use them?

I'll try them, they look legit. Nothing to lose at this point. My mini is not registering in any network (Emergency calls only). Erasing modemst1 and modemst2 deleted my IMEI and MEID. I've managed to rewrite the IMEI but not the MEID. Flashing a custom rom didn't fix it. The phone is not bricked though so there is hope. I can still use ADB and EDL. There is a way to get the phone in deepflash mode even but I have nothing to flash on it so I haven't tried that yet.
PS: I've emailed ZTE and they are not responding. I think they are seizing support completely.
