Hello xda member I have a problem with my S4 (I9500) battery consumption and I would like you to help me. Well, It can't be normal that my phone consumes that quantity of current, I mean, 460mA? It doesn't matter what I am doing, it is always the same quantity, never consumes less, I have tried turning off the wifi, mobile data, location, sync, even I turn on airplane mode and power saving mode and it's the same, the number of mA doesn't change, , I have to mention that I always use the brightness in the minimum. I installed Gsam Battery Monitor app and it shows that the mayor part of the battery consumption is in apps and within it it shows that the kernel and Android System consumes too much battery, is that normal? I have tried everything and I haven't found any solution for this, I really need help
Kernel version: 3.4.5-VoLTaqe [email protected] #1
ROM version: FirstFlight N7 Themed V6
S4 I9500
Just in case, this also happened in the stock rom, indeed I changed the rom looking for solving this

you will need to replace the battery....obviously..
And how much usage do you get from one charge?

I don't understand the question at all, when I completely charge the phone it immediately starts to discharges at that speed, it discharges approximately 1% in 2 or 3 minutes, using the phone, or just leaving it with the screen on it can discharges up in 3 or 4 hours. With the screen off it discharges slowly but the problem is when I turn on the screen, it doesn't matter whether or not I am using it. There is something that is draining off the battery. I have measured the mA that consumes another phone and there It discharges even at 90mA when is not using it but in my phone it is not the case. I don't think it would be the battery, I tried with another battery and the consumption is the same :crying:
@ricardo_beatles
You said the battery is good when screen is off, then deep-sleep is working fine, so i suggest you uninstall each app you have one by one and test afterwords and see what is causing the problem.

It's not drainage. That's simply how much the battery lasts on the S4 while in use.
Ask anyone around here and they will tell you that they get a maximum of 4 hours of screen-on time or SOT for short.
Screen-on time means the total time the screen was on since the last charge.

Yes, but what I tried to say is that the problem is not too evident, the problem persists because when the screen is in off it consumes too much battery too, up to 20%. I will try that

I know there are already a lot of discussions on battery drain and believe me, I have read every single one of them. However, I think mine is slightly different:
When fully charged and using WIFI for 10 minutes, 10% of juice will be used. Listening to MP3 for 1 hour will also use another 10%. Overall, battery life is really bad but the key is it only happened suddenly. It have been very good up till now.
I have tested this on another battery and have exactly the same results so it is not battery related. I have also hard reset the phone and tested the battery with nothing installed and it still drains. A full charge only lasts me like 4 hour of very light use.
I installed Battlog and the power consumption is around 90 which I think is pretty low, but at times, even with this low consumption, I can see the battery usage literally falling before my eyes, like 5 % in 5 minutes.
I have also tried the HTC battery test, i.e. fully charged the battery, turned on plane mode and full brightness. After one hour, it only used 8% which I thought is normal. However, if I start using the phone by just simply clicking around, it will start dropping.
I believe the phone is fine on standby but once it starts doing things, even simple operations like moving around folders, it starts consuming a lot of power.
This all happens after an overnight charging episode when I noticed that the light stays amber in the morning and the percentage stays at 80%. I soft reset the phone and it immediately show 100%. This has never happen again but my battery usage is never normal since.
All in all, I think it is somehow hardware related, like the battery gauge is bad or the charging is never complete but it still shows green. It is still under warranty but I think will be very difficult to convince the service centre that there is something genuinely wrong with the phone.
P.S. Should also mentioned that I am using the stock telstra rom and have also cycled through the batteries twice before testing.
I had the same problem...
You should try resetting you battery:
1: let your battery drain to 0%
2: fully charge your battery while keeping your phone off!
this solved the problem for me..

I had actually "reset" the battery but only drain it to 5% before recharging as I have read that it is not safe to drain to 0%. I'll try to completely drain it tonight and recharge. Will report back.
btw, I noticed that when the battery is charged to 100%, the led stays amber for about 15-20 minutes before turning green. Is this normal or should it turn green immediately after reaching 100%?
Tried completely draining the battery and charge overnight but have no effect. The problem persists. So this is definitely not a battery problem.
I guess the last thing I can try is charging the battery with a standalone charger or another HD to see if there is problem with the charging mechanism in my phone.
The latest Telstra rom seems a bit better on battery

aidinali, can you please explain what you mean? I thought the led will go off if you unplugged the charger. My problem is that after reaching 100% as indicated on the phone, the led stays amber for another 15 minutes before turning green.
Well , I'll correct & explain more....
1-when you reach %100 ,the led will turn to green immediately (if you’r phone is plugged in).
2-if you unplug ,the led will turn off (as you said ).
The problem is that since the battery meter in HD has not been defined by percentage , it doesn't match with
Apps like battery level or battlog .so when you see %100 on them , it' s not "real % 100 ".
I believe there is something wrong with the phone as the percentage usage and charging status do not match. However, since the basic HTC software does not have any battery usage in percentage, it’s hard to convince the service centre that something is wrong.
Any software that shows the battery as a percentage all have the same reading, so I assume they all rely on the mainboard for that information. There is obviously something wrong with either the charging process of the phone or draining more battery than it needs during usage.
I have 100% exactly the same problem as in the original post.
Does anyone else?
I have also tried 2 batteries and had exactly the same results with both, so I also know it is not the battery. The only app I have installed other than Dutty's 6.5 rom is Tomtom which does not need to be run for any of these issues to occur.
Any chance on warranty? I think it's software...
Try a different ROM. I've been having the same problem. I just flashed a new ROM about an hour ago (partly because Dutty's 6.5 kept freezing). I'm hoping both problems will be solved now.
i've found the latest radio rom to make a big different to battery life. 1.14.25.24_radio
the previous radio rom (1.13?) did suck the juice and made battery last 2 days less than 1.14
Try charging with a different charger. Ie. connect a USB cable on your PC and charge it from there.
I've had very similar problems with the stock charger a month after i got my TouchHD, and ended up testing with my old P4350 charger and all problems went away.
I've had similar drains even witch WiFi off, no emails, exchange or 3G access...
Now i'm getting a whole day's usage and i'm left with 30-40% battery, with 2 hours average talk time
I've tried with a number of chargers.....battery still sucks.
I've just switched from Dutty's to Energy ROM, radio is 1.14
If anything...energy drains more quickly than Dutty's
It says it drawing 350mA
Ok, I've used Energy ROM but now using Dutty's Leo. The only thing I've loaded so far is Battery Guard which say it's drawing 98mA when on standby(ie....backlight goes off). That'sa massive difference on the 250mA readings I used to get....now all I have todo is figure out which program I'm loading that is killing my battery.
That still only equates to 12 - 13 hours on a good standard battery with no use at all.

Standard battery should last longer. Sounds like your battery may be slightly faulty. Make sure you let battery drain fully before charging, and always try charging with device off. Should help improve strength.
I had same problem when i flashed miri's rom, hd got warm and didn't last, it cooled down in standby, the answer to my problem was that the wifi was not set to save battery mode, once i set it to save power everything was ok
Used 8% in 24 hours

Have been trying that for a month now....something seems to have suddenly worked It only used 8% of the battery in 24 hours! I live in the rainforest with no service so cellular was turned off...wifi on, but I only accessed it about 6 times......still,nothing has changed. The same conditions would leave me with a dead battery in 7 hours previously.
Time will tell if it keeps up this well.
By the way....Thanks
So basically you're saying people should drain down the battery to 1% or so and not to 0% (device dies when battery is out) to get a better battery strength?
Seems to be the general consensus. I'm still not sure if that's what made the difference for me but previously,I would put my device to standbye when I went to sleep at 10:30pm and it would be dead by 6am
i changed the phones battery i noticed that it is acting weird. i fully charged the phone and this morning i took the charger out and in 30 minutes without touching it it dropped to 95% and from 7 am until 4 am the battery is now at 26% without even touching it. what happens is when i look at it it says that is still 95 but then when i go to settings/battery then it changed to 26 out of nowhere. i tried putting the old battery but still no go.i tried installing a custom rom and kernel and i even tried 4.2.2 stock and 4.3 stock and even changing radio and i looked online for help but same thing happens. i dont know whether is a battery problem or a software or hardware problem. i really need the phone working and i was wondering if someone had the same problem and also if you used to charge the phone with a wireless charging station because i saw something about using it and then not getting enough power from stock charger. i bought it on ebay and the previous owner had a wireless charging if it helps and he told me a new battery would fix the blinking red light of death. any fixes for this? here is the video of the weird battery problem and it is on airplane mode and safe mode. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PlFqagJ2v-k here is another video of how slow the device detects the battery drain https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Blz68xgQcDU
Install the following app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.asksven.betterbatterystats
You can find a free version that works just as great but I personally like this. Charge to 100% then just use it normally. After it drains, open up the app and see what wakelocks there are. You can Google them and it'll tell you what to disable or uninstall from there

I have a problem like yours... during the night my phone drain 10-15% of the battery in airplane mode... i've tried to install stock rom, clean install of cm11, some kernels, UV and UC... nothing works...
Last night i went to sleep with 93%, after 8 hours i had 93% but after 5-6 seconds it dropped to 81%.... no sync, airplane mode, greenify on all apps...
I've also bought a new battery... nothing to do... it can be can hardware problem?
Thanks

Well the graph has started from when the phone was at 1.2Ghz... The battery life just doesn't get worse.. Its the same with 1.2 and 1.9.. Just some minor differences.. There is less heat and low performance on 1.2 and on 1.9 the phone heats up quite a bit but the performance also increases considerable.. But it doesn't seem to affect battery life..
Vikram: Firstly, its bad manners to hijack someone else's thread. You should start your own if you have a question.
It's hard to say if it affects a battery life, because your graph is over the span of two days. One single charge and discharge cycle is sufficient to demonstrate any issues. In any case, it may be unrelated to your overclocked processor, I would install the wake lock detector app and start from there.
Hello guys
I have my galaxy s4 i9505 android 4.4.2 . Is that normal, that my phones battery discharges in 2 h 30 min average (from 100%), when i play heavy games like asphalt 8 from fully charged battery till its discharge with wifi on and on 50 % brightness? Also when im surf the net, stay on fb and do stuff like that, my phones battery discharges in 4 hours. I say thats not normal. And by the now my phones battery discharges 1% in 2-1min
So its that a foulty battery problem, charging port problem or else? Dont tell me reset my phone cus, i done that 10 times already and it didint help
Im pretty sure its not Running apps problem either, cus my phone dont heat.

Let's be organized:
1. Faulty charging port: can be, if you phone charges too long. nothing related with discharge speed
2. Faulty battery: check battery SN, if it starts with BD letters, can be. In this case, the battery would be visually swollen, and your phone shall randomly reset with charge from 80 to 30%, and shall not be able to start without the charger connected.
3. Discharge of 60% per hour is possible, depends from the apps running in background. Install Battery Monitor Widget or something similar to investigate closer.

Thanks for reply I forgot to mention that my charging port is weird, sometimes charges phone, sometimes not. Recently my phone charges only when its turned of completely, when phone is on with charger connected its discharges. Also i can say that thats not a charger problem, because my brothers S3 charges very well with it. I'm i have ordered the new charging cable/part for my phone, and hopping to fix charging issues.
Another problem is that my phone in powering On process goes to Download mode without key combination and dont boot up (sometimes), also in the same way rondomly when i press power on button it goes to recovery mode (without key combination). Is that problem may be realated to this one i stated before (about charging).

Really? 2.5h is good on gaiming and wi-fi with 50% brightness? When browsing the net, my phone discharges in rate like 1%/3mins... (average)
it depends entirely on usage. 2.5 hours screen time while gaming is pretty good I think. on stock rom i can manage anything between 1.5 and 4 hours screen time, but it also depends on usage during screen time. if you're running something that's quite hard work on the cpu/gpu and with the srceen constantly on....like gaming.....then obviously that will drain your battery faster than just browsing the web or texting etc.
generally speaking s4 will last through a days normal use quite easily.....but then it depends on how you define normal days use.

Thanks for reply So its nothing to worry about? I had S3 and it lasted much longer than my current S4. Of course i need to look at its 5'' display and 1080p resolution If you guys getting same battery life while heavily using your phones, it means it's ok and i don't have consider of changing battery ?
yeah i think from the sounds of your usage, that's about right for a stock rom.
if you are still only getting about 2-4 hours total use (i.e. battery dead from 100% down to 0%) from your normal daily use while you're at work/school or whatever (i.e. where it's sat idle for most of the day), then you've probably got something wrong. but given that you said you were playing games etc contantly and still got 2.5 hours screen time, that's ok i think.
you can always try and squeeze some more out using custom kernels etc, but if you are not certain it's some other fault i#d try and see what battery life you get on idle first so that you don't lose warranty by flashing a custom system. so yeah try for a day or two leaving it with just normal usage or idle whenever possible to compare

THAT is NOT normal... and yes, it may be somehow related... if your phone shows that often, and if it is under warranty, I'd consider going to service center
ooops, yeah i totally missed the post about your download mode issue and faulty charging port. if you're in warranty, take it back.
Hello everyone, i just purchased a second hand Note 3 N9005. The phone was bought 1 year ago. Everything is fine except two things.
1) Battery: As soon as i charge the phone battery drops really quick down to 80%. For example it discharges 10%+ or more during night (wifi, mobile data off), if i use the phone it will drop to 80% in a matter of minutes. No obvious reason for the drain in my eyes. As soon as i hit 80% it starts to behave more normally. The more i discharge it the harder it gets to run down the battery ! Last night i was trying to fully discharge it. Battery was down to 1% and it took 45+ minutes of youtube playback to go from 1% to empty !!! Moreover at night if battery is under 80% with 7-8 hours of sleep it won't drop at all. As soon as i plug in the phone it goes from 0% to 15% instantly ! Then it charges normally.
Is this behavior normal ? I mean the no linear discharge. I've had LG G2 before and Nexus 4 and i didn't have this issue.
If this is not normal, is it most likely a damaged battery or could it be phone's fault/ inability to read the battery charge correct?
2) S-Pen. I have noticed that it needs some pressure to work. I've tried Note Pro 12.2 S Pen on the phone and it works with a lot less pressure. I've opened the pen and increased it's sensitivity it got better but still not as comfortable to use like the S-pen from the Note 12.2. Anyone else noticed this ?
Thanks in advance for your time

Yeah i have changed the tip. I even tried a tip from the Note 12.2 pen, same thing. I think it comes down to a sensitivity issue.

Rockfreak I'm also having the same exact problem of the battery, my battery drains from 100% to 82% in less than 25 minutes after that its solwing down, there is a strange thing some certain percentage is hard to be drained easily as some time it takes 10 minutes to drain a certain percentage specifically i can't understand why but I believe for some reason the system is not reading the exact percentage and capacity of the battery.
However, although of the strange battery behavior I'm getting almost 5 and half an hour screen on time no matter how long I'm idle also i never close my 3g connection and it's always connected as H+.
Moreover, i tried to use battery calibration application that doesn't require root access (my N3 is not rooted) when the mobile is in the charger and fully charged notfication appears i restart the mobile without unplugging it from the adapter once it's boot i go to the batter application program and press calibrate then i unplug my mobile.
In this excact period of time i can notice a big difference in the battery behavior and it starts to drain almost normally, anyhow, I'm still getting the same excact screen on time which is around 5 to 5 and half hour, also as soons as the battery reaches 0% or 5% and i charge it again to 100% and get the battery full notification the misbehavior starts again.
I tried alot of things but unfortunately with no luck. So i decided that ignorance is a gift xD

Hey guys ,
I have a Note 4 N910F. I can't say I'm impressed with its battery life (coming from LG G3) but it lasts from the morning till I go to sleep on med-high use which is fine.
The problem that I experience though, is that if I "heavily" use my device when the battery reaches 10% - i.e. the GPS and the Data Connection turned on and Google maps are being used, the phone suddenly shuts down. I need to put it on a charger to turn it on and the battery is 0%.
I will post a screenshot as soon as I can.
Do you think this might be related to a hardware issue ? Or is it just the battery ?
I've tried to calibrate the battery but didn't help.
thank you!

Next time you should search first as there is another thread discussing about this.
But I will still answer your question.
It's your battery deteriorating.
It seems that your battery can only hold 90% of the original capacity.
Li-Ion/poly battery WILL deteriorate over time & it can deteriorate faster without proper care.
How to prevent faster battery deterioration:
Avoid heat.
High temperature is the worst enemy of any lithium based battery.
Never let your battery reach 0%
Reaching 0% means longer charging time = more heat exposure while charging
Avoid putting your device/battery on the dashboard during sunny day.
Do short charge multiple times a day.
