Idle Battery Drain - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

At idle, is 4% battery drain per hour normal? I let my new S8 sit over night and the only thing showing consuming battery was idle and cell signal, but it still drained 4% per hour. I have it set for WQHD and aod is on. So far I've been very disappointed with the battery life of my S8 and am considering returning it and going back to my Nexus 5. Is there anything else I can check/do to find why it's draining so fast? Or is 4% idle per hour normal?

I was getting very good standby . Seemed like less than 10% overnight. and
Adding apps that want to update all the time will consume more standby power though. So I'm not getting that anymore.
Aod will take 10% of your total battery charge. Or so they say.
Anyway, you could try with aod disabled and see how that goes.

Howdy,
S8+ here, whatsapp, messenger and typical apps installed here, AOD on.
My standby drain is 1.3%/h. You may want to investigate which app is keeping the device awake / causing wakelocks.

What do you recommend I use to figure out my wake locks?

Also, I'm not rooted so is there anything I can do other than uninstall an app anyway?

You can block their notifications, that will help a bit.
I just did a one hour test and it's 2% on my s8+.
Well you know, if you got many fb contacts and all sorts of messages your battery definitely drains faster.

force doze app did wonders for me

Use GSAM battery monitor to trace your wakelock. For my case, my S8 last time is draining around 3-4%/h with AOD on & now only 0.5-1%/h without AOD.
Believe it or not, my S8 battery standby drain is getting better daily due to app power monitor. Give it a week or more for S8 to learn & setup for your usage behaviour.

I don't use AOD, but if I get more than 4% discharge overnight I would be on the hunt for rogue apps. You do realize at 4% discharge rate per hour your phone will be dead in 24 hours even without you ever using it?

About what I'm getting too. The Device Maintenance app does a great job shutting down battery draining background apps. I routinely get messages that 3-8 apps have been shut down.

Which app is the "Device Maintenance app"?

Installed Greenify and started using force doze and my idle drain is now < 2%.

The device maintenance app is build in. It will kick in after a certain time of idle. You will see it in the notification bar.
As for other apps, they simply stop apps you installed from using battery time.

LG G2 Draining in overnight

Hi,
I bought 2 lg g2 (d802). I noticed that one of them drains 7% of battery in overnight (wifi on) and the other one drains only 3%. Is 7% a normal rate in overnight or should i ask for a change with the store?
Turn off syncing and check for wake locks... That's not a reason for a replacement.
Gesendet von meinem LG-d801 mit Tapatalk
Since i like the stock rom i didn't root. I had such draining after i installed some games from the market. Even after uninstalling them the draining was there. So after hard reset everything went to normal.
But i played a bit with disabling google play services etc. I found out that with disabled google apps it drains more battery then with them on. Crazy !!!
Now it is just sync and location off and it is sweet....
Just my 2 cents

My first question would be what are the differences between the two phones?
This could include:
Different email accounts (one with more traffic/data downloads)
Different apps
Different location in the home (weak signal strength can drain a battery faster)
Different points in battery drain (one started the night fully charged, another at 50%?) Batteries drain at different paces at different charge levels.
I would say however that if a phone is getting a lot of network communication it is not unusual for it to lose 7% overnight.
try a factory reset?

no actually 7h+ even after 10h
using greenify forgot to mention that.
but it's true. charge my phone before I go to sleep and it's still 100% when I wake up. can make a screanshot tomorrow if u don't believe me.
You cant actually count battery drain if you are coming from full charge. From 100%, battery seems not to use any power if you are not using your fone at all, like when ur sleeping. Battery usage starts substantially accurate once level is below 100.

Z3C rarely goes into deep sleep

Hello,
I used CPU spy to see if the phone went to deep sleep during the night and after wake up I saw that from the 7 hours, 4 hours it was in deep sleep and the other 3 hours it stayed at 300 MHz.
Is this normal? The night before I didn't charge the phone and it lost 9% in 7 hours during the night which I think is too much.
My phone isn't rooted so I can't find what is causing this, is there any way? Or any recommendation to fix this? The battery is pretty good but this is still annoying.
BTW I have 3G and WIFI always on, but no BT, no locations, no google search, google+, etc. activated and the Power Management settings doesn't show any drainning app at any time.
Thanks in advance.

For me the battery during idle seems to vary. I have seen it deplete at around 1% an hour or 2-3% for an entire 6-7 hour night. My guess is that it is based on my usage before bed. On some nights i might've used an app that triggered a wakelock and other times not.
I am heavily into homescreen customization (and rooting-however not for this phone yet, without the exploit) and have widgets and animations everywhere. (like the homescreens you would find on mycolorscreen). I also have a good amount of apps. The potential for a wakelock is certainly there. Considering those 2 factors i would say the battery for this phone is extremely solid compared to any devices i've used in the past.
I have also had instances where if i am at a meeting or doing an activity and don't touch my phone for several of hours the battery life stayed at the same percentage or only dropped 1%. So the phone does indeed go into deep sleep.
Overall, i don't think the standby time is bad enough for me to complain or investigate.

Yes I see what you are saying, the phone doesn't always behaves the same way.
I just don't like the thought of some app draining my battery for no reason, maybe it's the e-mail account. I can't complain aswell, I got 2 days of battery with 6.45h SOT this weekend I guess that's great, 9% during the night was too much though.

I had battery drain of about 4-5% overnight at first, but after going through all the apps and disabling any parasitic menu options (like phone-home data logging), setting Wi-fi to turn off during sleep, disabling app syncing overnight and disabling or uninstalling unwanted apps installed by Sony, I'm down to about 1-2% drain overnight, which is about as good as it gets. And that's without Stamina enabled -- I set that to kick in only when the battery is below 50%.

[POLL] Average battery drain % per hour while idle

Just like the title says, I would like to know what is the average battery drain that you guys are getting on your S6 and S6E devices while leaving it on idle. My device is SM-920I and the battery drains about 0.7% on WiFi and 1.5% on 4G per hour. I understand that the mileage will vary depending on how many apps/radios you have installed/turned on, but would be interesting to know what everyone is getting as an average.
I'm running a fairly untouched version of clean rom. The only battery tweaking I'm done is having GPS only turn on for maps. About 1 to 2% an hour
Over night i am normally at 65%. When i wake up its at 64%..... all data, gps and sync are off. And on silent mode....
While phone in deep sleep, it drains 0% for 6H and 1% around 7-8H. All stock and no root.

The only way i can get this is to turn on Airplane mode. Otherwise it drains about 1% per hour.
Usually 5% overnight. 8 hours.

At best I get 0.6%/hr with WiFi turned off over night (about 7 hrs). With WiFi on and connected it's worse, 1.1%/hr drain. Weird to me that yours uses less battery on WiFi.
In either case, my 'held awake' time is between 35 minutes and 1 hour, again this is overnight.
I've done a lot of tests since getting the phone and this is consistent for me.

Get better battery starts and check the kernel and partial wakelocks to see what keeps it awake.
I have some atrocious battery drain. Right now im on XTreSoLite 2.0 Odex and uniKernel with pretty much every service disabled, greenified, app removed, etc thats possible and still get bad drain. Ive even gotten rid of the Google app in my quest to fix it. I have more battery and wakelock managing apps installed i do than everything else combined. Literally nothing i do seems to make it reasonable. Right now im draining at 7.9% an hour, I average 5 hours of SOT with 16 of standby. If I let my device idle I get 2 hours or so of SOT with standby of 18 hours. Overnight drain can be anywhere from 10% to 2% and I can't figure out what to do to fix it. And the worst part is, all my wakelocks aren't anything severe. The most severe one I have keeps my device awake for a total of 5 minutes at most over the 16 hour period.
Literally at my wits end.
I even tried to undervolt my processor but I can't find an app that actually works, most just revert what I set after a few minutes. ._.
Stock OS was terrible, my phone would die in literally four hours immediately after after factory reset and not signing into any accounts.

Maybe you have removed too much and some app is waiting for another which you have removed or greenified.
BTW a device draining in 4 hours probably means a defective battery, these things can be very dangerous! !!!!
1-4% based on what I have running when I go to bed. I leave everything on.

1-2% missing when i go to bed everythings on including wifi
I just have a night mode in Tasker. It drains around 1% over a night (8 hours) if bad cell, else less than 1%.
My night mode just toggle Bluetooth, data, wifi and GPS off and then on again at morning.
Yesterday had gone 25 hours without charging and still have 39% left but screen time of about 1.25 hours and most of the time on wifi. Talktime of about 1 hour. I haven't rooted or disabled any app and i find this is lot better idle drain than my nexus 5. But yeah i can only get around 4 hour SOT because i always use full brightness.
usually down bout 20%~ when i leave my phone for the night.

Galaxy S6 Edge+ Battery Drains In Sleep Mode

Battery drain
Hi there,
im a proud owner of beautiful edge+ with a massive problem.
My battery goes bye bye in sleep hours 40 to 50%. I sleep 7 hours, my phone is at 75%..when i woke up, it was at 20%... the only thing i have on is the edge timer..power saving on and the not disturb on as well during sleep.
Im a recent guy on android..any help would be appreciated...i really don´t know how or what is draining the battery. It´s stock with google now launcher..pretty basic...
Another thing...why can´t i unnistall the messenger app (fb?)
Thanks in advance.
I also have a standby time drainage on my edge+. I would like to know how to prevent this. I've used package disabled but in the end, it didn't do much for my battery Drain.

Yes, the S6 Edge+ battery definitely drains fast in standby. I have the VZW variant. With my previous phones (Note 2, 3 and 4), the battery would drain about 1% per hour during standby while I was sleeping (w/ Wi-Fi on). My S6 Edge+ seems to drain at a rate of 5% per hour with Wi-Fi on. With Wi-Fi off, then the rate drops to 2%-3% per hour.
I'm amazed/jealous at my wife's iPhone 6 Plus. It literally has no standby battery drain. Go to sleep at 11pm and wake up at 6am...battery still at 100%.
I'm getting about 3.5 - 4 hours of SOT. Overall, my battery life is slightly worse compared to my Note 4. But I still really like the phone.
Not at All..
I also Owned this beautiful device..
5d+ standby and 1 hour Sot and 37% remaining
Not bad near me..

It's strange. With my Note 2-4, I had less battery battery drain with wi-fi on.
My egde+ runs about 1% each hour in standby with wifi on.
My phone is just out of the box no other apps installed.
I had the same problem, I installed JuiceDefender, it reduces the battery drainage.
I'm getting no drainage during sleep mode

Battery overnight

7% of battery overnight.
Wifi, 3G, google now and side clock on.
Is this normal?
Standby Cell=2% (5h on time)
Android OS =1% (13m cpu)
Standby Device = 1% (4m cpu, 28m active)
I too loose between 5-7% overnight (8 Hours). Although the battery life of Edge+ is pretty good while in use, I have noticed that standby of the device isn't as impressive as earlier Note variants (Yes, I'm comparing with Note series).
WiFi - ON
Auto Sync - ON
2-3 Apps with Notification ON
Samsung Pay on Screen Off - ON

Ok so it is good right?
Then why it drains so much overnight?

yep, same here... so maybe it depends on the strength and quality of cell signal..
will test in the next days...
I am sure it cannot be any samsung app/service as I have disable 200 of them with package disabler pro
also, location/3g/wifi/sync/googlenow always on is the same setup I had on OnePlus One, that was using barely .5% per hour
it also true that on the OnePlusOne I could also turn off the notification light during night, while with this I cannot so it could happen that the light keeps on flashing for 5 hours, draining battery
also, I have edge clock on at night, still some drining...
I thought the deep sleep or idle drain was caused by lollipop, no? I lose over 10% from a 7hr sleep, even if I turn the WiFi off. WiFi eats up a lot of my battery for some reason, and I know my connection was good too.

I solved my problem: night watch...
With night watch on I lose 1% per hour at night, with night watch off I lose 2% in 6h
I was consistently losing 2%-3% per hour overnight. But once I found an overactive app (Plume) and changed from instant notifications to 30 minute polling, my battery life has drastically improved. I've also used Package Disabler to disable bloatware on my device.
The past couple days my battery has been around 97% - 98% when I wake up in the morning.
